Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

The "Big Kid" Heads Off to the Big Apple

That's right, former Eagles lineman Shawn Andrews has just been signed by the New York Giants. Looks like fending off repeated advances from the UFL finally worked out for the big guy.

As you all remember, Andrews was released from the Eagles back in March due to repeated back pain and a work ethic that many doubted existed. A look at the former first round pick's Twitter account should give you a clear picture of where his interests were at the time - "getting his Michael Phelps on". Still, back when he was first released, the "Big Kid" reportedly wasn't giving up on football and was quoted as saying,

"You guys'll see me somewhere hopefully in somebody's jersey in Hawaii and wherever the Super Bowl is."

Well, now he'll get his chance (*cough*). After a successful workout with the Giants, Andrews signed the papers late last night. General Manager Jerry Reese was excited at the new addition to the offensive line:

"Our personnel staff has been monitoring Shawn's progress for awhile now. He looks great and had a very good workout for us yesterday. He can play both guard and both tackle positions. We just have to take him slow for the rest of the preseason to get him into game shape. Shawn is very excited and grateful for this opportunity to play for the New York Giants."

Best of luck with that headache guys. We'll see if he's still on your active roster by the time week 11 rolls around.

We can knock this all we want

but it pains me to say that this is a very low risk, high reward signing. This guy’s potential is through the roof. I doubt he’ll live up to that potential ever again, but there’s a slight chance. And it makes me sick that the Giants now have the slight chance in their back pocket.

Couldn’t he have signed with Raiders so that we’d never have to hear from him again?

+1, Smitty. Not thrilled about this.

by igglemethis on Aug 20, 2010 9:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed. He also has a better chance of working in the Giants offense, as it is very tradition (read: boring) and does not require the same amount of thinking as the WCO. It’s an offense that requires certain physical advantages in personnel in order to work (bigger linemen, taller receivers, etc). Andrews will be able to use his strengths (physicality) and not his weaknesses (thinking and working). He’ll be fine until he makes a mistake and has to confront the NY media…then he will fold like a lawn chair.

by House of Pain on Aug 20, 2010 10:28 AM EDT up reply actions

the Giants run a very traditional offense in the sense that they still use a real fullback (Hedgecock) and focus on the run. They also use their TE more for blocking than for pass catching (part of the reason that Shockey left, and Shiancoe before that). But their offensive line play is not particularly traditional. Rather than big maulers, a la Dallas, the Giants use a lot of movement. Andrews will likely be backing up Snee, one of the best guards in the game, who specializes in pulling. I have no idea what Andrews’ style is, but it is a low risk high reward signing.

WTF.............

Ok even tho the chances of him ever regaining his old form r slim 2 none i have 2 admit this really pissed me off when i saw this, its just our fuckin luck that Shawn will have sum fuckin miraculous comeback and itll have 2 be with the fuckin Giants.

I would be pissed if he

ended up playing like he did a few years ago. shit.

This means less than nothing.

The guy is worthless and completely bereft of work ethic, discipline, and, dare I say, talent.

I'm with on all counts except for talent.

If you think he lacks talent you are blind. Talent is what he has in spades. Work ethic and discipline seem to be lacking. Not to mention he’s had a healthy dose of bad luck. If he learns his lessons and everything breaks his way though, it will not be fun trying to get to Eli in the future.

Can you just change you handle to ‘Slow-Witted’ Banner?

Lack of talent? Yeah maybe on the work ethic & discipline he certainty has some defeciencies but I know that this may sound crazy but maybe his back is much better. It isn’t uncommon at all for even major back pain to resolve itself mostly withtout surgical intervention with 6-9 months. He might just be relatively painfree for the first time in a while.

If he is just goofing off and not prepared to put in the time, the Giants will cut him in short order I ebet.

Yeah right.

He fucking sucks.

If Shawn can play the way he used to

He is the best line man in the division. Great cheap signing by the giants. I could see this biting us in the but, however we couldn’t keep hoping he could come back. We had to cut ties.

Let's get it Birds.

I SOOO hate him.

I really hope he doesn’t play this year. He should be here, but has NOOOO heart. He wont finish the year.

Bitter ex-syndrome for Eagles

This is a great low risk, high reward move for the Giants. If he doesn’t pan out, so be it. Coughlin and the Giants will likely give him the boot real quick. Don’t have the numerous financial and organizationa ties to him.

Ugh

I have a bad feeling about this.

Take the name off the back of the jersey's and reinvent football as a team sport.

by MightyJoeBanner on Aug 20, 2010 10:03 AM EDT reply actions

Why?

Was this the same bad feeling you had about all the other guys we let go who were out of the league after 2 years?

Could this guy be the next Burgess? Sure. Is it more likely he’s the next SImon, or Duce, or Tra? Absolutely.

by DLawrence55 on Aug 20, 2010 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I think this is a no-brainer actually.

Sign him cheap, no ties and see what happens. If he pans out, the Giants land a Pro-Bowl offensive lineman. If he doesn’t, no skin of their back. If he hadn’t been an Eagle I’d say the Eagles should have picked him up.

by NOLACuse on Aug 20, 2010 10:05 AM EDT reply actions

this is garbaggio.... i can totally understand the rationale to bring him in (giants), and i rarely wish negativity on people... but i can make an exception for this guy. he is a complete waste, although the phelps thing was entertaining. i'm really hoping that this doesn't pan out for ny... ny football bias aside, i really hope this guy ends up wearing a headset at wendy's - because that's how hard he WANTS to work - so that should be WHERE he works.... anyone know the contract particulars?

by PHIGHTINPHILS on Aug 20, 2010 10:13 AM EDT reply actions

Once a pink taco...

always a pink taco. Very true that there’s no downside for the VaGiants, but he’s just another big (fat) kid, at this point. Two years away from the game smoking lettuce and working on your muzac career does not a comeback make.

It's "Kolb"ering time!

by oldasquick on Aug 20, 2010 11:24 AM EDT reply actions

I look at this like a Chris Carter situation. No matter what happens to his career he was not going to work out for the Eagles. So I’m not going to worry about any would haves or should haves.

I'm not drunk I'm just drinking.

by no1pipelayer on Aug 20, 2010 11:28 AM EDT reply actions

i knew this would happen..

He’s all depressed and lame so we have no choice but to release him… and then after some time away he’ll get motivated and sign with a rival team…

I definitely called this on the post where we found out he was released..

by Manoovi on Aug 20, 2010 12:20 PM EDT reply actions

Should’ve signed with the Steelers so he could be around fellow penguin fans all the time.

by youaretheman26 on Aug 20, 2010 12:39 PM EDT reply actions

Of course, this being Shawn Andrews,

he will come back and play like a Pro Bowler for the Giants, and open massive holes in our defense for Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw.

by MyronBales on Aug 20, 2010 12:40 PM EDT reply actions

I’m surprised a team signed him but if he is right which is a big if then the Giants got them a player.

by The Legend on Aug 20, 2010 1:40 PM EDT reply actions

As a Giants fan, I was kind of wondering about his playing style. He will be backing up ailing Chris Snee, who is a master at pulling. Can Andrews move? or is he a mauler?

by Cornfields on Aug 20, 2010 1:44 PM EDT reply actions

Both

Your looking at a guy who was at one point one of the best guards in the NFL, he was a master at pulling and he was a masher in the run game. Oh and he is a tackle too, only allowing 1 sack in college at the RT spot.

But he is batshit crazy so… enjoy!

by d-jackfan10 on Aug 20, 2010 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Great player

But has a questionable heart. I don’t think he has that fire in the gut that you need. He fell in love with the money and stopped caring.

Now that he’s playing for milk money he may bring more intensity. Dunno if you can just find that again, though…
