Eagles Training Camp - Brandon Graham Comes Alive

From all the tweets coming out of training camp, today may have been Brandon Graham's coming out party. After a strong morning session, Graham continued to impress in the afternoon. Jordan Ranaan remarked on a particular play where he beat Winston Justice with a bull rush. Jeff McLane says that it's "Only a matter of time before Brandon Graham is the starting LDE." Les Bowen claimed that Justice was "holding onto Graham for dear life." Graham seemed to own Justice at the morning practice as well.

Riley Cooper further cements his place atop the Na Brown award rankings with another good day. He caught a big 50 yard TD from Michael Vick, his 3rd 50+ yard TD in the past two days. Reporters remarked that it seemed like he got one of those almost every afternoon.

Moise Fokou finished last season as the starting SAM. He was shuffled to second string in this camp and now he's being worked out at DE. He spent most of today working with his hand down or playing the Joker position. Looks like they're trying to find a place for the guy.

Mike McGlynn took over the starting RG job in the afternoon session in place of Stacy Andrews. Andrews wasn't on the field and so far there's been no explanation why.

Star-divide

Injuries... Macho Harris limped off with what looked like a hamstring tweak. Brent Celek left with dehydration.Speaking of Macho, in the morning session he was absolutely trucked by Leonard Weaver on a block.

Stacy Andrews injury turned out to be a shoulder. Antonio Dixon may have a slight concussion.

Rookie Clay Harbor continued to impress and so far seems to be beating out Cornelius Ingram for the backup TE job.

J.J. Arrington struggled today including one sequence where he fumbled and dropped a pass on consecutive plays.

Stewart Bradley briefly returned to practice in the afternoon, but soon was back working out with the other injured Eagles. Hamstring seems to still be bothering him. Stew spent the break between practicing apparently catching up on celeb news,

Oh, dammit

Please, God, don’t let McDermott spend the whole damn season screwing with the LBs again. Even if Fokou (or Jordan or Clayton) isn’t ideal, he won’t get better bouncing in and out of the lineup. Pick a SAM and be done with it.

Now is the time to experiment

Not Week 7. Let them tinker at Lehigh.

that’s what we said last year lol and then he ended up doing it the whole year.

"Pick a SAM and be done with it."

Do that when the season starts… Not in camp. This is when you move guys around and see what you’ve got.

I see your point

But since Fokou was appointed the starter before the season and they didn’t do much to address the position (5th round picks count as “not much”), it just makes me think McDermott doesn’t know what he really wants from the position.

This is the most interesting training camp I can remember ...

… keep the updates coming. Nice work, even when they conflict with what we’re reading elsewhere, it’s good insight.

Stew … he’s just a different dude. He can cares about Lindsay Lohan as long as he keeps punishing RBs, etc.

I think the amount of reporting and updating is substantial compared to previous years thus making it more exciting. Also last year I blocked out because of the injuries.

fokou being worked at DE….really? do we not beleive in getting a DE for the DE position or do we strive for converting every linebacker we have to a DE…dude is in his second year

by rainvillefromottawa on Aug 2, 2010 5:18 PM EDT reply actions

I agree. It doesn’t make sense to me either.

by 999 on Aug 2, 2010 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I know I wish he’d just let players like Fokou and pretty much the whole defense just focus on a position and improve at that position, he keeps trying linebackers at defensive end and defensive ends at linebacker and defensive ends at defensive tackle, and safeties at cornerback, it’s starting to get a little wacky.

by fhqwagads on Aug 2, 2010 6:23 PM EDT up reply actions

But these positions aren’t big jumps…

It doesn't sound like they're switching him

it sounds like he’s working in as the joker, which is the hybrid LB/DE they use in certain pass rush packages.

Personally I don’t have a problem with McDermott seeing what guys can do while at camp. We want guys who are more versatile and whose presence on the field doesn’t automatically clue the offense in to our defense’s plans.

The flipside of course is finding out if they actually are versatile & multi-talented.

Macho

Has started to look like a really nice corner so far. I have been there the last 3 days def looks better there than he did at S. I am rather excited to see him as the season progresses. And I might as well jump on the Sims bandwagon, … cause damn that guy is playing with a chip on his shoulder. He may or may not kill babies and eat raw horse.

swapping linebackers

Its okay to move pieces around and get a feel for what you got. Its too early to be upset at the rotation and instability.

The first game of preseason, though, you better have a good idea of what you are looking at. At that point, you need all the reps to go towards the one who is taking the most reps- the one who starts.

I’m still curious if clayton pans out at all at SAM. Sounds like he’s the key to getting our best 3 on the field.

Riley Cooper

Have any of you went to the philly site and check out the pratices.. Riley Cooper is a monster… I heard he was a big wide and all that but dam… to see him is a trip…. and I just pray our d-line is that good because they where killing the o-line I mean it was bad…

Awesome

Either Graham is really really good, or Justice sucks again. I hope it’s #1.

By all rights he should, He’s what a 4 year vet going up against a rookie. I’m worried if Graham is owning him on 1 out of 100 plays.

I don't think either guy should be dominating the other ...

… not if we want them both to be very good NFL players. They should each be getting the best of each other some, and then having a bunch of stalemates too.

I understand what you’re saying you want them both to show they know what’s going on and the ability to succede however, with this being Graham’s 2nd day of camp I’m just a bit dissapointed in Justice.

Hey Dez, it's 2am do you know where your mother is?

by sowhatifitisasportste on Aug 2, 2010 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, OTOH, Justice has a year of good play behind him, so it’s not like we don’t know anything about him. I’d say the fact that a rookie in Graham is doing well against a guy who at least has given one good year of play as a starting RT in the NFL is more encouraging than worrying.

I do see the reasons for worrying about Justice though. There is no depth to speak of at the offensive tackle positions.

by Rujasu on Aug 2, 2010 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

keep in mind

Most RTs don’t play against really good speedsters from LE. He may be catching justice off his mark.

I know personally I do think of his strength as a run blocker primarily.

This is good for him. I think what helps make indy’s line so consistantly good is squaring off against such a stellar offensive line. They work each other into shape.

My concern with graham isn’t pass rushing, anyway. Does he have enough ability not to be a liability against run on 1st and 10? If he does become the starting LDE, I have confidence that he’ll be elite. I just need to see that he is not weak against the run.

What's the story with Ingram?

Is he dropping the ball? Missing his assignments? Hitting his routes at all?

by IggleGreen on Aug 2, 2010 8:08 PM EDT reply actions

Just from what I saw he’s not ready. I think the 2 year lay off is poking its head out. I don’t think he’ll be cut but he will be behind Harbor at the end of the day. Sucks because there is so much hype around him and he def is a beast physically, but it just seems like he’s a little lost.

by Bono Hit My Car on Aug 2, 2010 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Linebackers ...

… doesn’t seem like anyone is talking about the way Akeem is No. 1 Sam for the moment, which is probably our best lineup at LB, including Bradley and Sims.

Maybe I missed the thread. I’ve certainly done that before.

Bradley – MLB
Jordan – WILL

sims is the spelling

And he is undersized for SAM. And is exactly a perfect fit for our need at WILL. I don’t see why you’d take him off the field (which is what comes off, the SAM) in passing situations.

In fact the more I think about it the more I know I’m wrong. When the trade was made people were talking about how this pulls Foko out of the line up and gives us a good looking LB corps.

what’s going on with Ingram how’s he looking on the field ?

by rainvillefromottawa on Aug 2, 2010 11:03 PM EDT reply actions

Beast or abusing below average talent?

I have a question; Is Graham looking like a half man-half beast because he actually is a half man-half beast or is he looking like that because he is going against inferior talent and will be rendered mortal against better competition?
