I was watching Daily News Live on CSN the other night and they just had a quick snip of a Westbrook interview from Niners camp. He said something to the effect of "I would be on the sidelines sometimes SCREAMING at coach Reid to run the ball, but it's a little different up here so I think I am gonna like it a lot better.." I can't find the video or transcript anywhere (help?) But it got me thinking.
I love Westbrook and I would never say anything bad about him. He was a special player for us and I hope he can help the Niners win the West (which would be really awesome cause behind Dawk, Mr. Singletary is my favorite football player ever). But I have to wonder how effective Westbrook would have been if his hands weren't as good or was just used as more a pure runner. As much as I can defend him, there were only two years where he cracked over +1000 yrds. But the fact that he averaged about 500 yrds and 70-80 catches receveing is what makes him what he is. That's why I really don't understand his comments that much. I don't think I could take Westbrook in his prime over Chris Johnson, Adrian Peterson, Marshall Faulk, DeAngelo Williams, LT etc etc because they are better runners and have the same catching ability as Westbrook. But that's not a knock, for 5 years he carried this team. You always had to game plan for him and the second you forgot about him BOOM, 6. And maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think I could look at myself in the mirror and honestly say that Westbrook was better than the crop of RBs above.
I also think its funny that Westbrook would critique Reid like most Eagle fans do about running the ball more. Which is so stupid at this point. There are two facts in todays football: You don't need balance to win championships (eg. Saints vs. Colts, eg. Rams from the turf days eg. Pats dynasty) and defense doesn't win championships, but they give you a chance (eg.2006 Bears, eg. 90-91 Eagles). I'm not saying those philosophies don't work, but they aren't needed to win football games. Westbrook was perfect for the offensive scheme here and I think Shady is too, but I believe he's more of a pure runner so I won't be surprised if Andy does run the ball a little more for the next few seasons.
What do you folks think? Westbrook would have been better with more carries? Did Reid used him the way he should have? Bono youre a moron.. all those and more our welcome.
