So...
Shanny wants to try and let everyone know he’s the big cheese by making Haynesworth run these gassers, yet he hasn’t made any other lineman run the drills. His team is transitioning to the 3-4 — Haynesworth is ready to play, and Shanny is further alienating him. I’m all for it, I just don’t understand it. Instead of the message being about hard work and being in shape, the message is if you eff with Shanny, he’ll try to embarrass you? Not to mention the fact that it’s playing right into the media’s hands to provide a distraction from actually getting ready for a season of pro ball in the most competitive division in the league.
So glad Andy doesn’t handle his business like this.
In the long run
This will dissuade further distractions, Haynesworth was going to be a distraction at camp whether he got along fine and did everything was asked or if he didn’t either way, tons of media attention on him.
Haynesworth fully deserved every bit of this embarrassment, complaining about a system before he’s even had a chance to try it and trying to force the FO to trade him after making him the highest paid defensive player ever. He was an idiot and should have known better and now he’s getting his.
"We are not normal, We are Legends. People will tell their kids about us." - Deon Butler before Ohio State Game 2008.
He was an idiot and should have known better and now he’s getting his.
Same logic can apply to the Redkin’s front office. He was adamant as a free agent in saying he was not interested in playing for a 3-4 team — his reaction should not have been a suprise. Doing this kind of crap is basically admitting that he should have been cut or traded prior to being paid that $21 million bonus check this past spring.
Just my opinion, but I think it makes Shanahan look foolish.
yet he hasn’t made any other lineman run the drills.
All the other linemen attended at least half of the offseason conditioning sessions, as spelled out in the offseason plan.
I think Shanny is totally within his rights, Big Al will fall in line and this will become a non-issue … but as an Eagles fan, obviously I’ll be fine if it blows up in their faces.

He really isn’t. Do you understand how far a 300yard sprint is? I seriously doubt that 20% of offensive or defensive lineman in the NFL could pass this test. Shanny is being a dick.
Unfortunately, I do understand it
And it’s not a 300-yard dead sprint. It’s a shuttle run, and the bitch of those things is the up-and-back. I read that Al only had to touch the line with his foot on the turnarounds, but anyone who’s done shuttle runs in high school basketball or small-college football knows if you have to crouch down to touch the line with your hand, the run is even harder.
Whether or not you doubt that 20% of linemen could complete the test, it can be done if you practice it a few times to tighten your turns and get your body familiar with it. I mean, in my wack little career in Division III I’ve seen much less physically gifted lineman than Big Al complete the run, but I agree it’s a bitch … and most linemen struggle with conditioning, period.
But all that said, it’s not like the test was a surprise. You wouldn’t show up to the combine out of shape and having never practiced your starts in the 40. Same deal here. Everyone on every team everywhere knows the first day of football camp is check-in and the conditioning test. You have all summer to prepare for it, and if you can’t pass it, you know you’re going to have to keep running it, so you might as well put in the work so ou can pass it the first time.
Shanny being a dick and being well within his rights as a coach are not mutually exclusive here, IMHO

If he doesn’t do it then the rest of the team will feel like Haynesworth got off easy while they were all working hard in the conditioning program.
True that ...
… This is important for setting the tone in front of the rest of the team. If Al would have passed first day, he would have shown Shanahan up. He definitely had a chance to “win” this thing, which could have been bad for the Redskins. Unfortunately for us, this could end up being good for them.
Not to mention this test is common at all levels of football. I’ve done the 300-yard shuttle run several times (also done 16 timed 110s) and they make it so that you’re only a few seconds of dogging it from failing.
Those tests are hard. You can’t come into camp not having run one all offseason or you’ll fail. Which is exactly what they’re designed to expose.

I've read that coaching staffs let guys slide ...
… if they want them to pass. That sounds very Zorn-era, but I’m not claiming that as fact. That’d be my guess.
I don’t have any problem with Shanny putting his foot down here. If Albert did the work, he’d pass the test. And it looks like he’ll be doing the work until he does. Oh well, sucks for him.

that whale!!!!!
I heard that 80% of the Redskins couldn’t pass that killer test. Good job by coach to make his point. Andy did that to a guy, George (I cant remember his last name, something with an H) an O Lineman, Andy made him push the sled alon all around the field, and cut him a few hours later.
In Kolb we trust
Not nearly as bad as what Shanny’s doing though…

How about
the Giants picking up your cast off A Hall on waivers?
Jimmy – I am sure you would have done a write up on this guy when you acquired him from the Browns – so is Reid right that he is a 3-4 and not a 4-3 player or is it because you got Graham, Sapp and Te’o and Hall lost out in the numbers game?
As for Osi he has a hip floxor issue which requires surgery. He will not make it worse by playing but at the same token it must effect his performance.

Hall's chances of making the roster
definitely diminished when we drafted three LBs. But I have to believe for him to not even make it to the start of camp to compete for a role as a backup/special teamer that he must have sucked it up big time, in which case, the Giants can have him.

Nope, no writeup on Hall by me. I actually have no idea about Hall. I know that he played some special teams for Cleveland, but little else. Interesting that the G-Men scooped him up – I hadn’t seen that. Wondering if they’re looking for whatever little tidbit of info they can get on Philly.

Normally
you do that for a player cut after camp!
So it woill be interesting to see if he survives camp but my feeling is that he is just another body for camp and will not make the roster.

Don't think the Gints will be "entertaining" you Jimmy
maybe JPP signs his contract and does backflips onto the practice field..other then that, the media ain’t up the Giants ass like they are with Dallas and Washington
Go New York Go!
The Jets can have the media
all flash and glitz to hide the fact they were 7-7 before the Colts relaxed, and then they played the Bengals who were also taking it easy. They don’t make the playoffs if Manning stays in the game. That team will implode like a dying sun and the Giants will keep quietly chugging along to another playoff game.

fine with me and I'm sure any Giants fan
the media seems to love to hype up the Jets when they’re any good, or at least thought to be good.
