Anyone else upset we relased Hall?

I just think its absolutley rediuclous that we traded sheldon brown, arguably our most constent corner we've had for the past decade almost...I know he wanted a knew contr4act, which i feel he deserved. he was constantly playing his heart out and was one of the more exciting players to watch on defence.. (Ex. RIP Reggie Bush) lmao i smile everytime i watch that video. But anyway I know its off topic but am I the only one who thinks it was a retarded move to send such a high caliber player to the brows for a mediocore linebacker and 2 late round picks? I mean if the draft picks play our then I'm all for it but i just think we're risking too much on these guys. If they dont pan out, we got rid of one of my favorite players on our defence and we didnt get jack shit for it...Maybe this was meant for a fanshot but I just wanted to vent to my fellow eagles fans and see if they share the same opinion i do...

No.

And by the way, by the end of last year, Sheldon was not playing good football. He was not a “high caliber player.”

I liked Sheldon too, but we need to be real here.

i was upset by the initial trade, not releasing hall

when we got hall in the first place, i did not think he would stick so my anger of the trade was re-kindled by his release but i am not upset hall got cut. sheldon will be missed but hopefully these sec boys lindley and sapp can make us forget about it altogether.

Think of it this way...

They released Hall to make room for Nate Allen on the 80-man training camp roster. I know your point is that we traded Sheldon for almost nothing, but remember that the Eagles brass is very adept at judging when a player is no longer capable of playing at an elite level. Sheldon may have been a better tackler than Asante, but he started to get toasted too often. Familiarity is hard to part with, but ultimately the Eagles were gonna let him walk anyway. And, yes, we got Ernie Sims (somehow) by dint of this trade. Don’t fret over Sheldon, and especially not over Hall.

We have a logjam of lb/de tweeners. I am honestly not sure why we keep going after those types (Bryan Smith, Clemons, Gocong, etc). These guys are usually too light ever become a solid 3 down DE, so we miscast them as an outside linebacker, or play them so sporadically that they fail to ever make an impact. If Sapp or one of the others do turn out to have the skills to contribute, I really hope McDermott can properly scheme to take advantage of what they offer.

when you look at some of the other player/pick trades leading up to the draft its hard to complain about the value received. Would a third have been nice?? Sure, but I dont think the problem is when/what picks we received its what we did with them once we got on the clock.

No one thinks Lindley is ready to challenge for the starting spot across from Asante or beat out hanson/hobbs for the nickel spot. Best case scenario… 4th/5th CB without getting much playing time unless players ahead of him get injured. Sapp, the later pick, is actually the more intriguing prospect but it just feels like weve been down this road before… trying to force a square peg into a round hole. Combine that with some of the other new talent we have coming in on the line (tapp, graham, teo) and I really dont understand the pick, no matter what the value.

====

Now lets take a look at what could have been…

at 105 I see two clear cut better options. First AJ Edds, a player that most had rated as the #1 SLB in the draft and would probably come into camp as the starter. This may be a novel idea to some but when you have played the position of SLB before you normally pick it up quicker at the NFL level. Second, there is Aaron Hernandez the TE out of Florida. I like Ingram but he hasnt played in 2 years and who knows how he is going to return.

At 134 I am probably going to lose a couple of you… Zoltan Mesko, punter from Michigan. No questions about whether he can play in the league, no questions about WHERE he plays in the league, and a clear cut improvement over our current choice. Sounds pretty good to me.

by 20dawk20 on Jul 28, 2010 11:15 PM EDT reply actions

No

Not at all. But fans seem to forget a lot that while the NFL is entertaining, it’s a business first. I remember watching the draft where we got Lito and Sheldon respectively. I loved the guy and his physicality, but just like the many Eagles players we’ve watched come and go over the years, time goes on and not everyone stays. Now we’re behind him who are going to have to show us what they are made of. Its a new time. Just like it was McNabb’s time, Westbrook’s, Dawkins’, Tra Thomas, Jon Runyan, etc. we have to move forward.

I’m a huge Sheldon Brown fan, he was my favorite Eagle while he was here but generally the FO has been very good at getting rid of players later in their careers. I think it was time to move on.

I don’t think they were expecting to get half the linebackers they did in the draft so it made Hall expendable. I’m not upset at all.

They call me The Professor.

by Whodie126 on Jul 29, 2010 2:23 PM EDT reply actions

Nope....not upset.....

They had to let Hall go to make room for Allen. They can always bring Hall back as the get rid of people. They may still think Hall can help, but the numbers game was against him now. I’d tell him to sit by the phone………or another team could grab him.

by virgoman on Jul 29, 2010 4:32 PM EDT reply actions

Reid was pretty clear that Hall did not fit into our system and they released him to catch on with a team where he did fit.

by Whodie126 on Jul 30, 2010 9:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Honestly...

I never thought the guy had a chance in our system. He’s another pass rusher who we wanted in coverage… it’s just not gonna happen. Yeah, I know we drop Trent back in a zone on occasion, but he’s a special player. Alex Hall, I think, was more a guy the browns wanted to unload. I’ll bet we wanted the draft picks way more than we wanted the player.

by HankM on Jul 30, 2010 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions

points made

I was talking more about the draft picks we got than Hall. I could care less about him but it just angers me a bit that we got rid of Sheldon for unproven players…But now that I think about it more, he was getting smoked deep a lot later in the season. I just wanted to hear what other people had to say about it. and for the people who had a problem with my grammar, go fuck yourselves because it’s a fan post and grammar had nothing to do with it…thank you guys have a nice day

Your opinion makes sense, but the way you see “it’s a fan post” makes it seem like you think grammar is not important in these pieces. Fanposts are supposed to be well-written, well-thought out pieces. If you disagree with this you should re-read the description of Fanposts and Fanshots, etc. Don’t complain when people call you out on bad grammar. try to be professional.

PAY ATTENTION BOY! (rooster leghorn foghorn)

You just might learn something. S.Brown was a legend in his own mind, and he was starting to get toasted consistantly. We traded him for those picks, Hall was a consolation prize, nothing more. The EAGLES got what they wanted. Goodbye SB, Hello
new draft picks. I promise we won’t miss him like we missed B.Dawk

by greenbeef69 on Jul 30, 2010 7:08 PM EDT reply actions

toasted?

ya maybe because of the way our safeties played. In 08, when we had a solid safety in Dawkins, Brown gave up just ONE (1) TD all season, and that was to L. Fitzgerald in the NFCCG. Mikell had a SOLID season as well and made the All-Pro. Last year, Brown practically had no safety help and had to do everything himself while he was playing with a hamstring injury. Mikell had an awful season, ya i know he made the pro-bowl, but that is just a big illusion. Mikell really struggled last year without a SOLID safety next to him. Brown could have still played for another yr. Brown became my favorite player on the team last year. Just the way he never quite and kept giving it his all even with his injury. I was really mad when we traded him away. As for the contract, if I remember correctly, the issue was never mentioned by Brown again once the season began. Samuels gets toasted all the time as well. he makes up for it in INTS, but for every Int he gets, he gives up 2 TDS. Brown was the best CB we had last year IMO. But there is nothing we can do now, we just have to hope Hobbs can do a decent job and Allen brings stability to the secondary.

by Phillyrampage on Jul 30, 2010 11:11 PM EDT reply actions

he makes up for it in INTS, but for every Int he gets, he gives up 2 TDS.

well this is factually incorrect. That means he would of given up 18 TD’s last year. Not likely. I know you were trying to make a point, but it was a crappy one. You seem to forget that Asante was also playing injured last year.
You were right, though, that the absence of a strong FS really hampered our entire secondary.
Anyway, Reid is a good secondary guy for the most part, so if he felt that Brown had done all he could for us and what we have on the roster is more then adequate to replace him, then you got to give him the benefit of the doubt. Remember when he let Taylor and Vincent walk and most people were like, what the fuck? Who the hell is this Brown and Sheppard characters? That turned out pretty well for us so I’ma let him roll with this one until it is proven a faulty mistake.
