Weakest Link Award

So as Jason B pointed out, every year we give out the Na Brown award the to the guy that comes out of nowhere and become the belle of the ball...of training camp. But why let the rookies and young vets have all the scrutiny? I think we should have an award for the veteran we want to see their way off the our team. In the past players like Jerome McDougle, Reno Mahe, and Todd Pinkston have wasted roster spots for years and we always ask ourselves "WHY?" Last year, Lorenzo Booker (former Na Brown winner, how the mighty fall so fast) was the man everyone wanted gone and that ended up happening. As sports fans I think we get semi-enjoyment out of watching the weak links be cast aside, not because you hate the guy but because he doesn't work for the team. For the award we obviously need a name which we will vote on. But much like the Na Brown award there is small criteria for the award, the player has to have been on the team at least a year, played in actual games, and have accumulated stats outside of special teams.

My bet is on Trevor Laws this year.

Mahe epitomized this. He was a player with zero upside, and one where you were 100% sure that if the Eagles were to release him, his NFL career was over.

Can't be Pinkston

I never thought he was the weakest link, the years he was our top receiver were the years the FO was the weakest link. Wasn’t his fault that better receivers weren’t brought in to take his spot.

This has to be Mahe.

It can be Pinkston because it isn’t whether or not they were productive. The criteria is someone we wanted off the team real badly. Pinkston definately fills that bill.

Who really wanted Pinkston gone? For better or worse for a few years there, our top options at WR were Thrash, Pinkston and FredEx, not one of them was particularly good and only FredEx was supposed to be a star. We had 3 WRs that were #2/#3 receivers, no #1 until TO came. I was thankful to have Todd because if we didn’t, FredEx would probably have been our best receiver.

Pinkston sealed his fate that day he stopped trying to catch the ball to avoid being hit by Roy Williams from Dallas. There’s no room for that type of pussy footed shit. From that day on whether you didn’t think so, the majority of fans wanted his ass off the team. Yeah when he had that nice year in 2002, it seemed he was set for a break out, but it never came. So being the best WR on the team in terms of ability maybe, but I always appreciated Thrash’s hard nosed style more, and accoridng to the poll, the majority of Eagles fans on this site agree with me when it comes to Pinkston.

I’m just saying, without Pinkston, our team was a lot worse because the front office never took it upon themselves to go out and get a good WR until TO came along. It’s like corner this year, Asante and who? The other person probably isn’t going to be great, be it Hobbs, Hanson, Harris or one of the new guys. That guy is going to catch a lot of shit even though he’s really our best option at a position the FO didn’t put an emphasis on after trading a starter. People may want that player gone, but replaced with who?

Pinkston, yes, was a wuss but at the time, the best receiver on a team with crappy recievers, without him, we may not have made some of those NFC champ games.

I really didn’t want to choose Reno (especially since he was the only guy we had who could even catch a punt for two years), but he fits the description the best. He caught punts fairly well, but he couldn’t return and he didn’t do anything else, so he was definitely the weak link.

If there's one thing Mahe had, it was a work ethic

he just didn’t have the physical skills to be anything more than what he was….and he still led the NFL in punt return average one year! No, that is not Na Brown material. And if we had him in ’08, we would have beaten Green Bay. Instead we got the Greg Lewis fiasco.

If you’re looking for a player with no work ethic, look at Bernard Williams or some other legendary Kotite/Campbell-era hall of famer.

I feel bad for McDougle, because the man was shot…but he wasn’t doing too good before that, I must admit.

Still, I stand by Schobel. That guy must have had pictures of Reid that made even the National Enquirer blush.

by DLawrence55 on Jul 28, 2010 4:28 PM EDT reply actions

Reno leading the PR average is misleading. He was really not a viable NFL return man. Regarding Reno’s work ethic, the guy seemed like he busted his butt and was very thankful to play in the NFL, but that is not the issue. The issue is he had zero chance of ever making another NFL roster, and had long since reached his ceiling. Ideally, you want your KR or PR to be a player that has a lot of potential at another position. I am not going to lay praise on Reno simply because he could catch a punt. The fact is he had zero upside, and was an absolute waste of a 53 man roster spot.

by captain nodar on Jul 28, 2010 10:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Mahe may have had 0 upside

But at least his value add was minimal. The key here is not just a waste of a roster spot, but a guy who could be counted on to do the absolute most to fuck things up once he got on the field. Mahe was not the weakest member of the team when got on the field. I can’t remember a time when a Mahe play cost us a game or nearly did.

Guys like Schobel, Laws and Booker added absolutely NO value to this team. I think we all remember Schobel’s efforts when he played for the Bears defense. Booker was the quintissential practice player whose shit was weak. Laws, well….

McDougle by far

What’s irritating is when guys SLAM the hell out of players who are just “role” players at best and not stars.

Reno was undrafted and was NEVER expected to do anything but pla y a role here and there.

McDougle? was expected to be a star DE.

It’s the same with WRs around here. If you’re not a star, the philly fan base wants themt o be excommunicated.

I propose...

the award list goes:

Na Brown: the “big show in shorts, no show in pads” award
Matt Schobel: the “when are we gonna get rid of this guy?” award
Jerome McDougal: the “poor guy is always injured and will never make it” award
Reno Mahe: the “I f*cking hate this guy and want him gone” award
Jeramiah Trotter: the “what the hell? why was he cut…oh, right” award

add on

the Todd Pinkston award as suggested by sowhatifitsasportste

and perhaps

by birds'n'raiders on Jul 29, 2010 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions

award ideas...

Keep the na brown the way it is
Todd pinkston or shawn andrews award: biggest pussy
The reno mahe award should be the weakest link award. If you really think about it our ST sucked in 2004.
There needs to be a “mr personality” award. Any ideas for that?

by eaglemaniac814 on Jul 29, 2010 2:29 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

The Na Brown Award will soon take it’s rightful place next to the Heisman and the Stanley Cup
The Pinkston-Andrews “Big Pussy” Award is very solid (had to hypenate, could not decide)
The Matt Schobel Weakest Link Award. Reno wasn’t too good, but he was stronger than Matt.

Personality…the T’eo-Nesheim Award.

by DLawrence55 on Jul 29, 2010 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Hahaha...

Yes, I <3 the Pinkston-Andrews idea
Schobel wasn’t much of a weak link, he was servicable when Garcia was around.
But for personality, I was leaning towards DeSean. DTO’s hasn’t even made the team yet.

by eaglemaniac814 on Jul 29, 2010 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Two things wrong here

Teo has assuredly made the team. He was a 3rd round pick, and only one 3rd round pick has ever not made his team his rookie season (Quentin Moses of the Raideds).

Secondly, teo has NO personality, as opposed to DeSean or Asante

by birds'n'raiders on Jul 29, 2010 5:33 PM EDT up reply actions

What I meant was...

DTO might have little to no impact on this team. And yes, DeSean is the perfect fit for “Mr. Personality”. Who’s the only other player to ever give Reid a chest bump?

by eaglemaniac814 on Jul 29, 2010 5:42 PM EDT up reply actions

God...Quentin Moses

Why the fuck was he even on the team? He contributed absolutely nothing in every phases of the game. Much more worthless than Pinkston or Mahe.

Booker

there was all this hype surrounding him. I got excited to see him and Westbrook both in the backfield. Two small, quick, and shifty guys. It would be unstoppable!!!!!

It was very stoppable. Booker was horrible. I think he played in like 4 games before getting deactivated.
