Is Sal Paolantonio accurately representing your state of mind for the upcoming season?
Our old friend Sal Pal published a feature today on ESPN on Andy Reid and the added pressures he now faces as the Eagles transition from the days of Donovan McNabb and Brian Westbrook to the newer, younger Eagles. While I don't want to pay much attention to his overall message (personally, I feel that any coach of the Philadelphia Eagles faces enormous pressure no matter what the circumstances), I'd prefer to zero in on one particular quote in his piece:
Assessing his rebuilt roster, Reid called it "a great challenge." What might be more challenging is convincing his championship-starved fan base that this roster overhaul can work. In Philadelphia, with McNabb now playing for the division-rival Washington Redskins, and so much inexperience wearing midnight green this season, there is little love of the unknown created by Reid.
More like fear.
I can only speak for myself when I say that I vehemently disagree that I 'fear' the direction this team has taken this offseason. But again, that's just me, and please don't let me sway your opinion. So I'm curious... Sal Paolantonio is a national writer who is based in Philadelphia - Do you think he is accurately representing your state of mind as a Philadelphia Eagles fan to the national audience?

I’d fear keeping all the old guys around until the die out at the same time, so you don’t have any experienced players at that position and it turns ugly, like Dallas is doing with their O-line right now.
It was time, I’m sorry to say Westbrook hit the RB 30 yearold cliff & it was time to let Kolb take the reins, rather than watch McNabb leave after the end of this year

I would be surprised...
If Sal Pal EVER accurately summarizes my “Eagles Fan” opinion. His statements are much better for creating drama than representing the truth.
Fear
Not an apt term but Sal Pal is right that a majority of the fans won’t piss/moan if this team finishes 6-10 or 7-9.
Eagles’ fans have generally really supported the team since the days that Buddy Ryan but this team simply hasn’t had a prolonged down period over the last 25 years either. Yeah the last year of Ray Rhodes was tough to watch but it wasn’t like the Eagles had a stretch of 4-5 years either where they haven’t made the playofss either.
If this team bumbles through a stretch of 4-5 years where they didn’t make the playoffs and were .500 or less, you would see general interest drop off especially if there was another really successful franchise in town.
I like Sal Pal
but anyone who thinks they can sum up the Eagles’ fans minds as a whole listens to WIP too much, where they shout out any dissention to their own opinions.
Most fans I know are more excited about the unknown than afraid of something bad happening. Even the most pessimistic think letting go of DM is going to prove to be the correct move, and are willing to give a pass as long as Kolb doesn’t embarrass himself this year.
Some fans, like me for instance, are wildly optimistic and are predicting 12 and 13 win seasons!!! :)

If anything I'm excited
things that I do fear about this team being small on D and weak O-line
but the direction of the team I’m pleased with
Let's get it Birds.
Excitement of the unknown
Is a general load of cr@p. If they get out to a slow start and really aren’t ever in the playoff chase, the ‘excitement of the unknown’ will generally turn into a bunch of complaining/whining.

afraid that trading for McNabb will be a disaster
I “fear” that they will take a step backwards this year.
But, I still think they made moves that were in the best longer-term interest of the franchise.
As a fan, I’ve been in “Superbowl or Bust” mode for so long that I think this season is going to be a weird mental experience.
Players weret the problem
well ok some of it was but alot i think that feared me was the draft & if the game play philosophy will change at all.
draft scared me as i thought it would because of the stubbornness this FO has ( rather take 5 late rounders & hope 1 or two are “servicable” ) & we havent seen the gameplay change in 10 years, i dont expect it to change now.
I mean i am sure all of use were sitting there watching the draft thinking yes! Earl is there! but in our minds we knew the eagle knuckle ball was going to be thrown & it was
Actually I was siiting there screaming, please no, not Earl Thomas. I never expected Graham (which made me jump for joy like I won the fucking lottery) but I was definately anti Earl Thomas for this team.

"Fear" is the wrong word...
…but it’s much closer than “love,” which is the point Sal Pal was trying to make. That said, I’d rather be afraid of what a rebuilding-ish season delivers than know that we’re going to be a pretty good team without a legitimate shot to win the Super Bowl. Of course, the whole ‘unknown’ thing is exclusive to the QB position — I’m at least as confident in most other positional units now as I was last preseason (for better or worse) — but if Kolb doesn’t cut it, then this year will probably kick off a significant down cycle.
I voted no but I can see what he means by the word fear. I think the eagles will do good. The only piece that is a big differance from last year is McNabb. Westbrook was hurt all last year so there is no differance at the RB postion this year. The only fear I have is that some of the younger players like Kolb, Graham, and Allen dont pan out. I think they will be great but the thought is still in the back of my mind. The only thing that will make me more comfortable is to finally see them play in the preseason. Oh and my biggest fear for me this year is everyones ACLs. I pray for all their knees everyday.
I voted no to having fear of the eagles overall direction. There are a few fears or things im nervous about in the upcoming season but overall the eagles are headed in the right direction. Things that make me nervous is players like Kolb or Allen struggling and also injuries that may occur during training camp.

how about EXCITED
EVERYONE FORGETS that we have won games with MULTIPLE different QBs in this system. McNabb wasn’t the glue that held everything together. I have NO fear this offense is going to be good
the only ‘fear’ we should have is if our YOUNG DC can get these guys to play like the JJ days
E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!
THIS JUST IN....
Assessing his rebuttal’d column, Sal Pal called it “a great challenge.” What might be more challenging is convincing his espy-starved fan base that this opinion overhaul can work. In ESPN, with John Anderson now playing for the division-rival Wipe Out, and so much inexperience wearing tacky suits this season, there is little love of the unreal drama created by Paolantonio.

I prefer the word 'rebuilding' to 'Fear'
I think that the Eagles have a lot of questions on both sides of the ball, and because of that I’m concerned about going with a virtually new team.

God, Sal Pal is a dumbass…
But anyway, no. If I was a Rams fan and I know my team doesn’t have a direction and took Bradford over Suh going to have a top-five pick next few years, then I would be fearful. But Eagles still have an awesome receiving corp in Jackson, Maclin, and Celek, have a good young back in McCoy, and still have a solid front 7 on defense. If our biggest problem is right side of the secondary and that Kolb is unproven, there’s nothing to be afraid of. May not have immediate success next year, but long term Eagles are set.
RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.
Wow
There’s 418 votes for now (I’m going to assume most of these are Eagles fans). I can only name a couple of handful of people that comment on here. Guess we got a bunch of lurkers.
Fear
Is not the word I would use
How bout Excitement … For the first time in a long time I’m looking foward to the making the playoffs.

As I wrote elsewhere, I'm not even nervous ...
… Much less fearful. This is the most calm, pressure-free season since ’01. In all seriousness.
I’m not even sure what there is to be afraid of. It’s an 11-5 team that drafted 13 new players. The uncertainty about Kolb is reasonable, but it’s basically they reset the bar this year and then there’s nowhere to go but up

And by the way
We added Sims & Tapp in addition to the 13 picks.
As many of you have said, there are positions to worry about and potential Achilles’ heels that could be exposed, but I don’t sense any kind of overwhelming “what if this all fails?” feeling among the Eagles fan base. Not negative at all really

Eh, I can’t say I’m 100% confident in the direction the franchise has taken, but I sure as hell ain’t afraid of it. These changes are being made to prepare the team for the future.
Oh, and Sal Pal is a douche rocket.

Brand New Level of Excitement
Certainly not fear. I am excited because as some folks mentioned above, this is the first time in nearly a decade where we don’t go into the season with a “super bowl or bust” pressure.
We’re looking for Kolb to show promise and for the defense to regain that JJ type of attitude. If these things happen, then we have the makings to be a team to be reckoned with for years to come. Dare I hope for a dynasty?
Looking Mean in Kelly Green

I have the same feeling as always....
ANXIETY. Of course, I’m a Philadelphia sports fan. I can feel anxiety at any and all times – whether the outlook is for our team to win the Super Bowl or predicted to end up in the basement. I can feel anxiety if we are up by 20 points or behind by 10.
Basically – all tickets should just come with a few valium.
I've been known to feel anxiety
that somehow they are going to blow it when the Eagles are up by 2 touchdowns at the 2 minute warning.
maybe an exaggeration
- more like 5 minutes in the game
Good God...
I firmly believe that half the reason ESPN has the perception of Philly sports and fans that they do is Sal Pal. He’s like a squirrel running around, looking for nuts. If there’s no drama, and there isn’t with McNabb gone, he has to concoct some kind of gloom and doom scenario to bolster the rest of the country’s exisiting image of Philly fans (Eagles fans in particular) as a hopelessly negative, downtrodden bunch. Fear?? If Sal Pal knew anything about us, it’s that we’re never afraid. We’ve been known to be pessimistic at times, but when would an Eagles fan ever say he’s afraid? Gimme a brake, Sal. You look and sound like a muppet.
Tony Romo...why so serious?
Sal
I am actually quite excited about this year. Sal and the WIP crew to me are out of touch. I guess that’s why I refuse to listen to either one anymore.
misuse of the word retard
pathetic of you to use the word retard. it’s a slur that mocks people with disabilities. don’t you know any better?
