2010 Eagles Training Camp: Kurt Coleman Impresses Sean McDermott
Eagles defensive coordinator Sean McDermott spoke with the media after practice and singled out rookie safety Kurt Coleman for praise. Coleman was the the Eagles 7th round pick out of Ohio State and missed the offseason OTAs due to NFL rules that don’t allow rookies from schools with a late graduation date to practice.

gotta love it
competition is a good thing (especially for saftey)
& who knows, if Coleman’s really good, maybe Nate Allen will move to CB… jk, but seriously… lolz

If Coleman is really good he would probably be Mikell’s replacement in a couple years or even next year if he could beat Demps if we didn’t re-sign Q
I know 1 thing having 2 players capable of starting is a good problem to have.

I did a special teams piece a couple months ago, and asked an Ohio St. writer about Kurt Coleman, and whether or not Ohio St. used him on special teams, and in what roles. Unfortunately, he didn’t get back to me for a couple weeks, so it wasn’t included. Anyway, this guy pretty much ignored the special teams question, and instead raved about the kind of safety that Coleman was, saying that he was an absolute lock to make the Eagles, and would become a fan favorite and immediate contributor. TBD.

What former coach doesn’t say those types of things though?
“On no. He’s terrible. I have no idea what he was doing on our team. Camp body for sure.”
The HC from Villanova tells AR the truth about his players. You think it was luck that Andy found Westbrook in the 3rd round? Hell no the HC called the FO and said you’ve gota come see this kid he’s the real deal.

I hear ya. For the record, it was a writer, not a coach, but it’s still the same concept. Still, this guy was waaaay over the top with his praise, which was encouraging.

Yeah, basically Tommy said ...
… dude would’ve been a first-round pick if he was a couple inches taller. And that he doesn’t test well or have great measurables, but he stands out on game tape.
Sounds good to me.

Everybody’s saying nice things about Coleman…but I’ll still feel a lot better about the season if Allen’s in camp tomorrow.
It seems like we’ve gone from “Allen is so close to signing that he drove up from Virginia” to “no news.”
Everyone is getting frustrated that he’s not in camp however, IF his nose is in the playbook and he’s in the weight room it may not be as bad as it seems.

there are worse clones to have.

Is that quote...
All truth? Or was it part scare-tactic in order to motivate Nate Allen to get into camp before he loses his starting spot?
I really like Coleman and think he’ll make the team as a backup S/STer. But part of me feels that statement was to scare Allen into signing…
I don’t know, just a thought.

Not a bad thought, but I don’t think so. For one, they play different positions – Coleman will be working as a SS, Allen at FS. Secondly, Allen ultimately isn’t handling his negotiations – It’s his agent. And thirdly, this doesn’t come as much of a surprise. Coleman is a guy that was really known for his intangibles, and was a team captain at OSU.

interesting
I do wonder where coleman fits in.. will be an interesting camp.
2010-11 Predictions:
Kevin Kolb will go to the probowl and complete >65% of passes.
Jeremy Maclyn will have more receptions than Miles Austin & Steve Smith
Graham will have the starting LDE spot tied up by week 5, win ROTY, and have >10 Sacks
11-5 finish.

Precisely what I was thinking. Like I said I have hopes for Coleman but this sounds more like a “Hey Allen we might give this kid your job if you don’t get into camp” line.

I’ve watched a few OSU games over the past couple of years due to my girlfriend’s loyalties. I have to say, I never really noticed Coleman. I liked the starting corner on that team and I liked Cameron Heyward, the DE/DT. Everything good that happened on that defense seemed to be caused by him. Other than those two though, no one on last year’s defense really stuck out that much.
Let the beasting begin.

Let's remember
That Coleman was one of Lawlor’s “players to watch.” Tommy isn’t often wrong.
I’m interested to see what happens with Coleman.

With second round pick Nate Allen still unsigned, Kurt Coleman figures to get a lot of work at safety in his absence.
