Don't Haze Me Bro...

In an absolute shocking event, we find out Dez bryant really is an a**hole. I don't think this was much of a shock to most of Eagles' fans but I wonder how the Cowboys' fans are taking this. Dez told the media he was here to play football not to carry someone else's pads. Roy Williams said if he didn't carry his pads they would go into phase 2. This meant they would get ahold of his credit cards and charge gas and food on them.

This is all part of the rookie hazing. Apparently Dez Bryant is above these ritualistic jokes played on rookies in the NFL. I think most of the hazing ends after training camp, then you're accepted into the group. I don't know if this has happened much in the NFL, but it's not surprising that it's a Cowboy going against the grain.

Nice title

I’ll give you a comment just for that.

I think Phase 2 is not going to involve credit cards; that was just an example. No way Roy’s gonna say his plan and then do it.

The big question is if all the vets get Roy’s back and help tie Dez to the goalposts or not. This could certain divide the team internally, as those who want to win will back Dez and those who want to haze rookies back Roy.

Personally, I hope Miles Austin comes down with a season-ending case of blue balls from my girl Kim and ends up the big loser in all this. Syphillis will work too.

Hazing??

I guess I was of the mindset that hazing was done to all rookies in some way. Whether it be washing cars, wearing dresses, or having to sing songs in the locker room. I didn’t know there was a division in the NFL. I guess I just figured it was a right of passage in the NFL.
I know in baseball, my rookie season I had oil all the infielder’s gloves the night before the first practice. It was no big deal, and the team actually respects a new guy that is willing to take a little crap to get onto the team.
I think this shows a big of initiative and shows the vets that you’re willing to be part of the team and want to play no matter what. The problem with Lez Bryant is, he knows he’s going to play and he knows the vets can’t take that away from him.

Absolutely. If it were me, I’d do it and take the abuse as long as it didn’t get physical, for the reasons you mention, but Bryant knows he doesn’t have to put up with any of that crap if he doesn’t want to, since he hasn’t done a thing in the NFL and he’s more or less been handed Roy Williams’s job.

I’d call it a strike across Roy’s bow. If Bryant can perform to back it up, then uh, you just got served :)

the difference is

Dez shouldn’t feel entitled. He’s there to make the team and help win rings. Why does he think he’s better than the jerry rices and michael irvings before him? I’m sure they were hazed.

Suck it up, pussy.

2010-11 Predictions:

Kevin Kolb will go to the probowl and complete >65% of passes.

Jeremy Maclyn will have more receptions than Miles Austin & Steve Smith

Graham will have the starting LDE spot tied up by week 5, win ROTY, and have >10 Sacks

11-5 finish.

I LOVE this, haha. As Philly fans we get so much negative media portrayal, so I do enjoy the Cowboys getting this crap. This whole thing is blown out of proportion. If you were in Dez’s position would you carry Roy Williams’ gear? The dude sucks and he’s an absolute dick. Can’t really blame Bryant for acting that way, but in a few days he’ll probably give in to the hazing. And if this was some 6th round pick no-name this would be a non issue, but since its Dez Bryant the media has blown it up. But I really do appreciate how hard the national media (and ESPN in particular) are working so hard to make Bryant the next TO. Hopefully the work pays off.

Well said

Though I think there is more to it than that. Even if Williams is a dick, Bryant is going to come in and try to take his job, just like any rookie comes in and tries to take the job away from the vet. Williams could lose millions in his next contract if that happens. There has to be some sense of understanding and respect towards the people who have been around. I think that is the part that gets overlooked about the hazing, the elders are part of the group and the rookies need to show that they are willing to pay their dues to be part of said group.

That being said, Bryant fell in the draft and lost millions upon millions of dollars due to his perceived attitude problems. People pay attention to first rounders and how they come along early no matter who they are, but the media is just waiting for this guy to fill his role as a problem child. This guy doesn’t seem to care about any of that. He wants to make himself heard, no matter the situation. You gotta love that. Could turn out to be a little bump in a long relationship between him and the team that never amounts to anything negative beyond this. It could also turn out to be the first warning sign before many instances where he feels disrespected, under appreciated or misutilized. “I feel like I was drafted to play football, not carry another player’s pads.” Hmmmm….

Yes, it’s being drummed up, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth noticing. Time will tell….

It turns out I overestimated my apathy, but not enough to matter.

Totally agree

Like I said, the media would love to make this guy the next TO, but that can only happen if he provides stuff like this. I just hope they (Dez and the media) can work together and make this happen, haha.

What Would Dez Do?

I would carry the pads. This isn’t a question of who Roy Williams is, or how good Dez Bryant is. This is just a right of passage. I agree that the whole thing has been blown way out of proportion though. There isn’t a whole lot going on in the Sports world at the moment, and so they are going to run smaller stories into the ground.

That being said, I don’t think that the media is trying to make him out to be another T.O.. He is doing that all on his own Here is an article that I read this morning about him. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_corner/post/Has-Dez-Bryant-already-killed-his-earnings-poten?urn=nfl-258758

Fuck hazing, it’s a horrible practice in all forms and needs to be wiped off the face of the earth. I have zero respect for hazing, even if it’s something as seemingly innocuous as making someone carry your pads. Bravo to Bryant for standing up to that garbage.

I’ve been a part of plenty of groups. None that hazed, and that was basically a result of my own choice. Part of the reason I never joined a fraternity is that I have no tolerance for hazing rituals of any kind and would have told the older guys to stuff it. Would have been kind of hard to be “brothers” with them after that.

Sorry, but as far as I’m concerned, there is no such thing as hazing done well. Whatever your experience, I doubt I would have put up with it. Just because not all hazing is as bad as the worst kind does not mean that it’s “good.” It’s only “not as bad.”

Hey Dez, it's 2am do you know where your mother is?

by sowhatifitisasportste on Jul 27, 2010 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions

That's exactly the point ...

… he does have a pot to piss in. He does have leverage. An NFL first-rounder is not the same as a fraternity pledge or a freshman on the high school team. By virtue of his stature, the way we treat NFL draft picks, he already is somebody. He has very little to lose by standing up to the hazing — it’s not going to cost him his chance at earning a job, and whatever he loses in locker room goodwill he can earn back by not sucking.

I’m not sure if Dez is smart enough to know all that or he just didn’t want to put himself below another man, but in this case, while he’s not “right” per se, his decision isn’t really going to cost him much.

Yeah, it makes sense. The hazing can’t be good for team chemistry (or maybe it can?), but what do you do in the case of the Jets last year? Sanchez is a rookie, but you know he’s the starting QB, and therefore a leader of the team. Do you haze him? If not do you still haze the other rookies? Hazing isn’t necessary, so don’t do it. I like the policy.

Cowboys’ Bryant never expected pads to be an issue
 STEPHEN HAWKINS
 AP Sports Writer
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Dez Bryant insists he was unaware of the rookie ritual of carrying a veteran’s shoulder pads after practice. The Dallas Cowboys’ first-round pick would have done more than that had he known his refusal to accommodate Roy Williams’ request would become such a big issue.

Welcome to Dallas, son. Everything the Cowboys do — like buy special houses for sex and crack-smoking — is a big issue.

"I told Roy this … he could have walked in with his tights on," Bryant said after the first of Dallas’ two practices Tuesday. "I would have took his shoulder pads, his pants, his helmet, his socks, his shoes. I would have took everything. But you know what, that’s not even an issue."

I’m not even touching that.

Bryant, the talented receiver who slipped to 24th overall in the draft because of questions about his character and talk of him skipping meetings and classes at Oklahoma State, said he is trying to do all the right things with the Cowboys at training camp.
"But it seems like I can’t do the right thing because every little thing that I do (reporters) watch it and try to make a big deal out of it," Bryant said.

Welcome to the NFL, son.

Plenty of drama and headlines ensued when Bryant didn’t carry Williams’ pads after the first workout in pads Sunday, then he said he was drafted to play football not to take care of someone else’s gear. He jogged off the field without commenting Monday after the story had spread so quickly and widely.
Bryant was clearly frustrated Tuesday as he answered repeated questions about the situation and his relationship with Williams, all while signing autographs for fans chanting their support for the rookie wearing No. 88.
"We are fine. Matter of fact, it is not even a situation," Bryant said. "Me and Roy are great. Not only Roy, but the whole team. … Everybody on the team likes me and I like everybody on the team. (Reporters) are trying to put me and Roy against each other. That’s not going to happen. We’re trying to do something real special here."

We’d prefer that you didn’t. Maybe make it look special, then fail miserably sometime in January. Thanks.

As Bryant signed footballs, caps, posters and T-shirts with media surrounding him, several fans shouted "Leave him alone" and "We want Dez!" Though Bryant is expected to challenge for the starting spot opposite Pro Bowl receiver Miles Austin on a team with Super Bowl expectations, Williams has repeatedly said that everything is good between all the receivers.
"Every team I’ve been on, and all the different guys that have been in our groups, the receivers have always been a tight-knit group. That’s what we are right now," Williams said. "It’s not me vs. Dez, or me vs. Miles or Miles vs. Dez. When it comes down to it against Washington (in the season opener), it’s going to be us vs. them."

And I’ll be rooting for them, sadly.

He's right.

Hazing in the NFL is fucking stupid. Just as it is in fraternitys, high school and the military. These are grown ass men were talking about here..why should he have to bother with getting tied to a fucking goalpost because its a “ritual”…Its dumb. The only guys I remember growing up who got “hazed” were dudes who couldnt fight back…Im not saying thats right either, but it happens. I agree with the earlier poster…make friends with frat guys and go to their parties, "f*** the girls there and get out without having to put up with people treating you like an A-Hole so you can get their approval.
Dez Bryant is 100% right here. And Im an Eagles fan. Im glad the Eagles dont do that stupid hillbilly shit.

Hazing is not stupid it can build teamwork and give everyone who has been hazed a feeling of I belong here. As a former US Marine I know what it’s like to be hazed and after being in the unit for around 3 months and all the guys took me out to the bar I felt more accepted than I ever had before in my life. It builds a brotherhood that can’t be understood unless you’ve gone through it and his (Dez) actions tell everyone around him that he’s too good to do the same things they did and he’s entiteld to somthing when they were not. Mark my words this from the outside looking in is just a scratch however this is a deep cut that will not heal.

Hey Dez, it's 2am do you know where your mother is?

You know what one of the biggest problems is? They lump everything like this into one general term of hazing. They consider carrying a guys shoulder pads hazing, but then they go and consider ramming a stick in somebodies ass hazing as well. Well shit yeah, humans are notorious for focusing on the worst aspect of a particular situation. People hear the word rapper and they immediately think black man from the ghetto who probably was a gangsta at some point in his life and he is probably making music about fucking bitches, selling drugs and killing people. They forget that Will Smith is considered a rapper, or the Roots, or any number of people not associated with violence. So they hear hazing and think of circle jerks and things forcibly placed in your ass and totally forget about the harmless shit that could be closer to being considered simply busting someone’s balls, like carrying a vets shoulder pads or shaving your head.
Hazing is simply a rite of passage that bonds you to other people who you will share some form of a group actvity with. It’s meant to let you know that the people who are already members accept you and want to bring you into the fold.
Also this,

The only guys I remember growing up who got "hazed" were dudes who couldnt fight back

is not hazing. It is bullying and it further illustrates that people confuse one thing with another all too often.

And now Dez is saying he didn’t realize this was a tradition and he will fix it … looks like the locker room explained the situation. I suspect this would have happened to all the above “tough” guys who said they would have not done it too.

I don't really see it as hazing.

He made a mistake and the media ran with it. He says the WR corps isn’t at eachothers throats and he said he didnt understand when it happened… so we’ll see how true tht is. But I have a better point: What would he have said to Miles?

Just wondering was hazing allowed when you enlisted?

shit. I remember running the gauntlet when getting promoted, and of course blood rank. It’s nothing. It’s something you do to strengthen your ties to the people who may have to save your life at some point. It’s a trust thing. Sometimes people don’t realize that and A) degrade it and call it immature because they don’t know what it is or B) take it to far not realizing that it’s not meant to degrade your brethern. It’s meant to show them you trust them.

Not allowed anymore,

but that doesnt stop it from happening. For all the military people on this site they have to look at this and laugh. This is nothing compared to being duct taped in between two mattresses and tossed off the second deck.
