Tom Heckert Would Have Given Eagles Two First Rounders For Kolb

Former Eagles' GM and current Browns' GM Tom Heckert says that he believes so highly in Kevin Kolb, that he would have give Andy Reid anything he wanted for the young QB.

"Whatever Andy wanted, I would have given him," Heckert said at the time. "A one (draft pick), a two ... two ones. No joke. Kolb is legit."

Just another tidbit from the Bass Fishing Odyssey, read it.

I wonder if Heckert feels the same way about this guy

by IowaEagle on Jul 21, 2010 3:36 PM EDT reply actions

I thought Holmgren was the GM.

I know Holmgren is the “President” and Heckert is the “GM”, so Heckert goes from wanting to trade the farm to get Kolb to paying an absurd amount of money for Jake Delhomme? Yea, that adds up.

The Eagles have always been phenomenal with personnel, but that sounds crazy. Him and Cerrato should buy a studio apartment together.

And I’ll have to check to see if Kenny Stabler or Jake Plummer patented the snakeskin jersey first.

Im not sayin he's lyin'....

but, he says that now. When the birds n Kolb are all set. If it came down to it, and the Birds did decide to trade Kolb and keep Dmac….u really think Heckert would’ve given up those picks.?! I dont know about that. Kolb is still a lil unknown regardless if Heckert use to be apart of our FO. I have faith in Kolb and i’m excited for this season, but business wise, trading that much for an unknown….! But hey I do hope Heckert is right. I know im ready to get this thing rollin.

I’m here for the orgy…?

2010-11 Predictions:

Kevin Kolb will go to the probowl and complete >65% of passes.

Jeremy Maclyn will have more receptions than Miles Austin & Steve Smith

Graham will have the starting LDE spot tied up by week 5, win ROTY, and have >10 Sacks

11-5 finish.

Context

The quote from Heckert is in reference to when he was thinking about taking a position with Atlanta (3 years ago).

This is not saying he would have given two first rounders from the Browns. With Holmgren there I doubt he could swing such a deal.

I am not placing an opinion on the validity of the statement, just trying to clear things up for those who are discussing the plausibility.

by Tbot86 on Jul 21, 2010 4:15 PM EDT reply actions

That was an excellent article. I can’t wait for week 1 to see what he can do

by The Fish on Jul 21, 2010 5:43 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Hilarious.

Easy to say now that it’s all settled and done. I think he said it to make his friend fatandy feel better about the ill-advised McNabb deal. So let’s use actual logic to puzzle through this one…ready?

Tom Heckert SAID that he’d give 2 number 1’s for Kolb. He had the picks to do the deal.

Instead of choosing “legit” Kolb, he signs Jake Delhomme.

How does anyone feel good about the word of a man whose deeds (not his empty bullshit words) indicate that he’d rather have Delhomme as his starting QB?

There’s a lot to be optimistic about in this great world of ours. Trees of green…clouds of white…basically all the stuff Louis Armstrong sung about so many years ago. However, the besotted rants of Tom the Terrible are not amongst them.

...But if he pulls the rug on his quarterback, Reid must do it knowing that he let McNabb down more than McNabb ever let him down.

by Greg M on Jul 21, 2010 7:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Of course, we can ignore the fact that no matter what Heckert wants (or would have wanted), the ultimate decision-maker on the Browns is Mike Holmgren. And no matter how hard Heckert might have said “pretty please”, that’s not his call.

And the quote is from a couple years ago, so take it with a grain of salt.

Though I will agree there is a bit of hyperbole in what he said.

let’s not forget that the Eagles have to actually agree to the deal as well. This is just EvilBanner posting after someone shit in his cheerios for the 12,000 day in a row. Anyone who doesn’t understand that dealing McNabb was the right thing to do regardless of Kolb is just kidding themselves.

JasonB

I felt that this post was misleading. When I went to the article and saw that Heckert had said this about a few years ago when he considered taking a job in ATL this lost a lot of meaning to me. I think that should be stated in this post somewhere to clear that up.

by AZ Eagle on Jul 21, 2010 6:25 PM EDT reply actions

whats misleading

hes just signing kolb’s praises. sure they are exaggerated and i’m sure he was just saying “the right thing.” but what else are we going to talk about in July? how good everyone’s beach trip was? how stupid jackson’s tweets are?

I don't mind that it's posted as it's on page

I do mind that he went to the trouble of posting it but left out the context of the quote, which I think is very important to evaluating the meaning. Especially since it’s clearly not the context one would assume after reading it (they’d assume he meant more recently with the browns).

by AZ Eagle on Jul 21, 2010 7:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

I don’t think it was left out purposefully, but it should be noted in the full context that the quote was given — the small piece of the quote here makes it sound as if this quote was given at some point this offseason.

by Greg M on Jul 21, 2010 7:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea i actually read the whole article

and it was misleading. Thought he was talking about the now. Totally cancels out what i stated above. Oh well

Now thats what Im talking about. I cant wait to start the season already. That way Kolb can get some real legit respect. He has some big shoes to fill but a couple a 300+ games and multiple TD’s and of course double digit wins. Bring on the Cowpukes!!!

and y doint we see if he will do it this year if kolb is a sucker

by Alex Klinger on Jul 22, 2010 12:06 AM EDT reply actions

Wait a minute

If this is true, and Heckert would have been willing to give up TWO FIRST ROUNDERS for Kolb, why the hell did the Eagles not do this?

I mean, sure, Kolb is your starting QB, but if you can get TWO first round picks, you pull the trigger on that deal. An extra first round pick this year = #7 pick, grab Haden or Thomas or whatever in addition to getting Graham, and then grab Clausen in the 2nd round. And then in 2011 you have 2 picks yet again, and you can either grab your QB if you didn’t get him in 2010 ( Terrele Pryor, Jake Locker, etc).

Damn. That would have been a tremendous opportunity to restock the team.

by MyronBales on Jul 22, 2010 2:40 PM EDT reply actions

Because Heckert was talking about if he took the Falcons’ FO job couple years back, not with the Browns (where Mike Holmgrem holds all power, not Heckert).

RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

by Joe_D on Jul 22, 2010 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I think what Heckert said was more hyperbole than anything. And even so, a (potential) franchise QB in his prime is worth waaaaaaay more than two first-rounders.
