Player salaries and economic rents | Smart Football
Brian Burke opines on NFL salaries: Personally, I think they're all overpaid, rookies and veterans. If you ask most football players if they would still play football for $80,000 per year instead of $800,000 or $8 million, they’d say yes.

Domenik Hixon blew out his knee during the team's first practice at the new facility and will miss the season.

yeah i was there
we thought it wouldn’t be as bad as that when he got up and walked off. i guess not too many tears from bird fans about it…
You never want to see a guy get injured. It would be a diffrent story if he’s comming across the middle on a slant and he gets lit up by the SS but, practice.

http://www.profootballweekly.com/2010/07/12/considering-kolb-as-a-fantasy-starter
It says in this article that Kolb’s and McNabb’s YPA and YPC weren’t far apart last year, Kolb’s was 7.7(YPA) and 12(YPC) McNabb’s was 8(YPA) and 13.3(YPC). I know that was a concern for some people going into this season but judging off of last season we might not have to.
DJax's "Swagger" rating in Madden 11 is only 95?!?!
"He wasn't an astronaut, he was a tv comedian! And he was just using space travel as a metaphor for beating his wife!"
I was joking about the new Swagger rating that D-Jax should have a score of elevenity billion. That if it wasn’t close to that I would find the whole new rating to be nothing but fraud! So on and so forth. Oh Madden. What are you going to try and sell me next?
Let the beasting begin.

I hate when people bitch about player salaries
They are the one generating all the revenue.. People watch sports to see the players, buy their jerseys, and obviously have influence on products as advertisers use them for endorsements. If they only made 80K a year the bulk of the money would go straight to the already billionaire or multi millionaire owners.
Plus, a lot of these players are straight morons and have nothing but football. It’s not like most of them leave football and start making a good salary afterwards —80% go broke for christ sakes.
lastly, the avg career span of a p layer is about 5 years or so in the nfl.. That would probably make it 99% that go broke after their career is over.
ok rookie salaries I can agree with. Earn your money rookies

Frankly I agree with you. Sports is odd in that employees are paid 60% of revenue, but it’s also not comparable because it’s such a highly skilled profession. Very few people can do it, so obviously wages will be very high because they’re in such demand.
The players are the attraction.

Right
how many people have elite genetics to play a professional sport? Its much muchl ess than 1 percent. sorry for all of you who think you can workout and exercise, practice and become a pro player. if you are an elite .000343% of the population you are going to get paid if you generate lots of revenue
E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!
it's basic economics...
it’s comparable to the reporter who gave uconn’s jim calhoun a hard time about his high salary, but neglected the fact that uconn’s basketball team pulls in $12 million a year.
people who are amongst the best of their trade deserve to get paid morem

Apples-to-oranges
Calhoun is at a state university and his salary is paid in part by taxpayers. In fact, generally the most expensive employee in a state university system is a football coach or basketball coach. I have an issue with that. I haveless of an issue if it is a private university.
Ya i think its sick how much they get paid…80 is a little low i would say these guys are in the gym everyday pushing their body’s to the max but people getting paid like 10 million a year is just sickening…

But
It’s not like their taking money out of a doctors pocket or out of tax money or anything. Thousands of people fill up a stadium with ticket prices $200+ every week. They buy merchandise and so on. I’d rather the players get the money then the owners who already worth how ever many millions.
fair enough
but lowering the ticket prices could be a start!
by rainvillefromottawa on Jul 14, 2010 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions
That would be nice… but as long as the demand for tickets is high at high prices no business on earth would lower the price.

ticket prices are fine...
there’s only 8 home games a year (10 if you include preseason). it’s not baseball where they play 80+ home games a year.

breakthrough season
IMO Celek “broke through” last year and will just continue to improve on that success. I am gonna go with Maclin. Other teams know Celek will be Kolb’s favorite target and D-Jax will always be that threat. So that leaves Maclin who will use those two to have a pretty good season. I will also throw out there Shady if AR decides that running the ball is a good thing.
I 100% agree. Celek has established himself as an elite TE, there is no breaking through for him to do.

last year was the breakthrough year...
and this year is to prove it wasn’t a fluke. He needs another season like that to be truly elite. If he puts up ~1000 yards and ~8 TDs again, he’ll have made it to the elite group for sure.

Professional sports
Is gradually pricing itself out of the range of most of its fans disposable income range and if things keep pace in another 15-20 yrs it should get really interesting especially as TV coverage continues to improve.
Frankly going to a NFL game can be boring and I don’t get much out of going to the Linc if you have some of the horrible seats in either of the end zones.
Football players salaries
I have no issue with NFL players salaries compared to other major sport because their careers are generally very short, they don’t have guaranteed contracts, and there is a clear link that playing football dramatically lessens your ability to perform basic life functions and even reduced lifespan compared to the general public.
