Michael Vick Shooting Incident Update

If you want to catch up on all the details on the Vick incident up until check out our original story or follow the stream on SB Nation Philly.

The NY Post went down to Virginia Beach in hopes of getting some more details on this whole Michael Vick shooting incident thing. A few witnesses revealed more about what may have happened between Vick and the shooting victim. The victim, Quanis Phillips, was a co-defendant of Vick in his dog fighting trial and the terms of their parole dictated that both men not socialize with one another.

Apparently, Phillips ignored that.

Quanis Phillips, a co-defendant in Vick’s dogfighting case, flew into a rage when Vick and brother Marcus Vick told him early Friday to leave the 30th-birthday party at a Virginia Beach nightclub, witnesses said.

Part of the "rage" apparently involved getting some birthday cake on Vick.

Before leaving, Phillips slapped a piece of birthday cake off a female partygoer’s plate, splattering the face of the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback with frosting.

"Michael didn’t react. I was surprised," a witness at the bash said.

A witness did say however that Vick’s brother did get angry and appeared very agitated. At that point, most reports say that Vick left the party. Phillips however, continued arguing with people outside the club and was later shot in the leg.

Star-divide

So, there’s a few ways to look at this. If you believe the witness here, Michael Vick appeared to do everything you’d think a person in his position should do in the situation. A guy Vick was not supposed to be around showed up as an uninvited guest to his party and the man was asked to leave. When the man reacted angrily, Vick removed himself, his wife, and friends from the situation and left.

Of course, if the story ended there it wouldn’t have been news. The guy ended up getting shot. That’s where the details get fuzzy and that’s where witnesses start refusing to talk. If the sum total of Vick’s involvement in this whole incident was what this story reports, then it’s hard to say he did anything wrong. However, until police find out who shot Phillips and get that guy to talk we won’t know what if any involvement Vick had in the actual shooting. Until then, there’s going to be an understandable cloud of suspicion.

It sounds like Vick did everything he was supposed to, as you said.

Based on past stories/instances, it would seem for all his flaws Vick isn’t really a hot head. The same cannot be said of his brother however. It’s unclear if his brother left with him or stayed around. I could see Marcus Vick having something to do with the end result if he did in fact stick around.

Marcus is definitely someone in desperate need of a role model. I wouldnt be the least bit surprised if HE had something to do with the shooting

That’s what I was thinking. I wouldn’t be surprised if Marcus or one of his buddies did the shooting.

I was gonna say virtually the same thing ...

… not that I normally buy what the NY Post reports necessarily, or what one witness to an incident says, but this actually is a fairly believable account, that Michael kept his cool and Marcus didn’t. If you’ve ever seen those two together, the younger bro makes Mike look like a saint. I even watched the epsiode of the reality show where Mike takes Marcus to jail to try to scare some sense into him, and none of it sinks in.

Vick shot the guy.

Then he cut off the guy’s leg and ate it. The whole thing was inspired by Plaxico Burress, but at least Vick figure out who’s leg to shoot.

He’s a busy guy. He needs to blow off steam like this from time to time and at least it wasn’t a dog. PETA won’t even care.

He only has time to do things like this when he isn’t worshipping Satan at black masses and sacrificing babies to George Bush.

Vick is getting the bad end of the stick again.

Vick can’t even look a certain way without getting criticized for it. The dog fighting story was crppy enough. It just showed how simply and hypocritical many people in this country are. I remember when L. Tomlinson asked a reporter what the big deal was about dog fighting. Alot of NFL players were in to it. After he said that the media crucifeid his image. Now Vick is at a club and someone gets shot and Vick is suspected of being involved. I see some of that simplicity and hypocriticism rearing its ugly head again. Wait for the rest of the facts to come out then we can pass judgement.

Oh great, now you are supporting Michael Vick.

Oh, so you want to santize Mr. Vick’s behavior, huh. You must be an apologist. Well Mr. Smarty-pants, I just happen to have access to Mr. Vick’s top secret, permanent record which was started in nursery school, and just like everyone else’s, and is kept current and up-to-date by the CIA, NSA and Microsoft Corporation. Just for your information, Michael Vick:

Was the lone assasin of President Kennedy.
Eats babies.
Caused the recession, the housing bust, and the stock market plunge.
Is secretly married to Rush Limbaugh.
Raped Mother Theresa.
Is the love slave of Hillary Clinton.
Is actually the one guy who posts as JIBTA, ProfileENT and CNCINFO.
Hunts endangered animials with nuclear weapons and a tea spoon.
Caused the Gulf Oil spill.
Beams nuetron particles into Joe_D’s brain and Is the reason why he is so cranky all of the time.
Actually loves dogs and has fathered a few litters on his own.

So how do you like that, Mr. Smarty-Pants, Vick defender? How do you defend against the TRUTH?

And then coincidentally a crime occurs against the man who just disrespected him? No, I’m sure it’s totally unrelated. Not at all like Michael to commit crimes.

Just because

he left it doesn’t mean he didn’t tell his friends to shoot the guy. Just because thats a possibility it doesn’t mean it’s true. I can not wait until this blows over in the next few weeks. We will never know and I don’t care either way unless it’s a distraction to the team.

by MightyJoeBanner on Jun 30, 2010 9:40 AM EDT up reply actions

No one said it was unrelated, but that doesn't mean Vick had anything to do with it.

He could have left early because the incident basically killed the party and he knew if he stayed things could only go bad. It’s possible he was actively trying to adhere to his parole. His brother is a different story and I am interested to see if he had something to do with all this. Now it’s certainly possible Vick told someone to do something to the guy, then left. I’m gonna give him the benefit of the doubt for now though. He’s never been considered a hot-head, so that theory doesn’t really fit.

I've been saying it the whole time

Get the facts straight!!! It was nothing but a (excuse my words BGN) nigga starting up a “nigga moment”. Its something that can’t be prevented if you have people from the past who don’t listen. Simply telling a guy like that to leave is like talking to a wall. It won’t get you anywhere. Phillips obviously was the typical hard headed, boisterous, stubborn, ignorant guy in the group who everyone tells to stay away but he doesn’t get the picture. 9/10 if you’re black and from the slums, you are going to have that person around especially if you start to prevail in life. They are always there to try and drag you down.

generalizing the type of moment

in a way justifies it. There aren’t any good excuses for this type of stuff. Im not condemning anyone. BUT why not have the BDay party at your house with your wife, kids and close friends? You’re on parole! Going out to a club where people are drinking and the energy is high, is raising the probability of something bad happening. Quinnes is just what happened. But it could of been some girl, who loves animals, throwing her drink in his face or, some guy who wants to prove his tough to his buddies…etc I know this kind of stuff can happen in the super market. But, it happens more when people are drinking.

He was put on parole. His mind set should be to simplify his life to: family life, work and staying in shape. If people wanna hang out. They need to come see him at his house. In a couple years that all goes away and his life can have some semblance of normalcy, but that “F” is always hanging over his head. A second chance is not a clean slate!

Plus he shouldn’t have friends who carry fire arms. He shouldn’t hang with people who don’t have as much to lose as he does. “You’re only as rich as your two best friends”.

You can't expect Rome to be built in a day

He should keep it low key, but the fact that he has a bad past and sometimes it will catch up to you. Its not as easy just to say I gotta change unless something drastic happens. But I can guarantee its not the first time he has been around somewhere and someone has been shot. The dog fighting thing just happens to add more fuel to this fire. I can’t get mad at Vick for wanting to have fun because I can think of plenty times me and my friends went out knowing we were going to be flirting with trouble.

As far as saying he shouldn’t have friends who carry fire arms…..I guess its more of an “If you haven’t been through it, you wouldn’t understand” kind of thing. The mind set is I rather kill then be killed kind of thing. I can’t blame it because when ever I grew up, shootings in my high school were pretty frequent so even I bought a gun when I was 15 and carried it to school everyday till the day I graduated. Its a feeling that if I get caught with a gun they call me stupid, but if I get killed then its just a rest in peace thing. I guess you would have been through it I guess.

No one has said, insinuated or even thought that Vick actually shot the guy. The insinuation might be that he ordered it to happen. Personally I don’t think so though. That just doesn’t fit with what we know about him. Still, that’s way too close for comfort. Hopefully it’s all just bad timing.

Sounds like Vick's friends kind of dropped the ball on this one

I’m absolutely not blaming Michael Vick. His friends should have made sure Quanis Phillips could not get anywhere near Michael.

Unfortunately some of the things Michael learns is that he can’t go out to a club like any other person any more. Douche bags like Quanis aren’t going to leave him alone and he has to insulate himself from them. The unfortunate reality may mean either not going to clubs or arranging for extra security. It may mean disassociating himself from his own brother.

But I give Michael a lot of credit for walking away from the whole thing without taking a swing at Quanis.

Sometimes it's just fun to take the family for a spin around the lake in the old boat. Even if it's not your family or your boat, and they're screaming for you to stop.

3 minutes

might as well be 3 hours, he wasn’t there. I guess the real question is how long were he and this Phillips dude at the same party? Here is my baseless hypothesis. Phillips finds out about the party and thinks it would be a good idea to show up because he is stupid. Vicks sees him at the party and says “You should go because I have millions riding on me not going back to jail”. Phillips says “C’mon dog, you gonna disrespect me like that!?!” Vick does the smart thing and leaves but his hotheaded buddies get tinto with Phillips and he winds up getting shot.
