Pre-Training Camp Roster Examination

Well, once again I must say that the duldrums of the NFL Season are thoroughly upon us! Besides my fantasy football prep work (watching old Eagles highlights in my boxers), and my phillies phandom (drinking heavily and complaining that werth can't hit from his knees), I have been following the Eagles through this offseason over zealously, as I see it as one of the most intriguing Off Seasons in a long time.

The eagles have cut some undrafted free agents this off season so far, to try and trim down towards the 80 man roster for training camp, and while it is still a LOOOOOONG way from the season, I will try and line up the roster to see where roster spot and starting position battles will take place as the roster is whittled down to 53 players.

QB - Kolb starts, duurrrrr, M. Vick Backup and riding the pine is Kafka, I think this is fairly set in stone. (3)

FB - Weaver starts and I don't think we will have an established "backup" in the traditional sense on the roster, however I see Clay Harbor lining up back there from time to time. (1)

RB - Shady McCoy is our boy, followed by Bell and Charles Scott. I see Mallett making the practice squad, but not much more than that. Charles Scott and Bell will be competing this training camp for playing time, lets hope that everyone remembers to bring their cleats to games, I'm looking at you Mr. Bell! (3)

TE - Celek starts, Cornelius Ingram Backup, and 3rd TE Clay Harbor, while Rucker is sent to the practice squad. There could be a good battle here between Ingram and Harbor for the back up TE spot, if healthy CI wins, if not 100% Harbor could see playing time early. (3)

WR - Jackson, Maclin, Avant in the slot are locks. The much publicized Baskett vs. Riley Cooper for the 4th and last available WR slot will go on all training camp. I say the last available slot b/c I believe the 5th spot is taken up by Chad Hall who will be taking kick and punt return duties on his shoulders. Baskett Vs. Cooper the The Fight at Lehigh(t) will be an epic battle, to see which player can contort their body, get their hands on the ball AND CATCH IT! In the end I think Cooper will win the job, Baskett will get released, Hank will divorce Kendra for this sex tape thing and then drop the pen while signing the divorce papers. (5)

OT - Jason Peters and Winston Justice are our starters, while this statement may have led to mass suicide a few years ago Justice and Peters may be our most conistent starters on the O-Line. Unfortulately that is where the consistency ends at the tackle position, I see King Dunlap and Fenuki Tupou getting the back up jobs, but there may be a push from any one of the undrafted OTs, Austin Howard or Jeraill McCuller. (4)

G - Todd Herremans and Stacy Andrews are the hopeful starters this year, I will include Nick Cole in this catergory as he is due to start at Center, but is suited as a back up Guard. Mike McGlynn and Max Jean-Gilles will be kept on the roster in case the Eagles decide Kolb is horrible and want him to get plowed over by Albert Haynesworth and thus avoid giving Kolb a contract extension when he is eating food from a straw. (5)

C - Jamaal Jackson will be on the roster for hopes of his return, does this remind anyone of the Kevin Curtis situation from a year ago, where they should have put him on IR instead of wasting a roster spot the whole year? A backup will be needed, and since McGlynn hasn't done much to establish himself I see the Eagles keeping AQ Shipley for depth. (2)

So on Offense that is 3 QBs + 1 FB + 3 RBs + 3 TE + 5 WRs + 4 OTs + 5 Gs + 2 Cs = 26 Players - YIKES!

If there is a position that we can lose someone it would have to be OG, however w/ the injury to Jackson and Cole having to play there I just can't see the Eagles going into the season w/ any less than 11 Offensive Linemen.

DT - Bunkley and Patterson are the starters, and while I think there is alot of quality players available for the back up slots, primarily, Trevor Laws, Antonio Dixon, Jeff Owens and Boo Ratley, I MEAN BOO ROBINSON, someone will have to be cut. There are only 4 available spots and that means Bunkely, Patterson, Dixon and Laws will make it, sorry Robinson and Owens, both of whom I think highly of.

DE - Once again there is so much depth here the Eagles will have a hard decision to make, past Trent Cole the DE position is up for grabs. Cole is LDE, RDE will be either Parker or Graham with Tapp, Abiamiri, DTO, and Hall all playing for depth. I see us keeping 4, and I think that Abiamiri will get the axe along with Hall. Cole, Graham, Tapp, DTO and Parker make it. (5)

LB - UGH maybe we should break this down a bit more.

MLB - Bradley starts, no doy! Back up could be Mays or Gaither, could be both. I think Mays has seen his best chance pass him by and will be cut or practice squad material. (2)

WLB - Ernie Sims is the truth and will be the favorite of many eagles fans by mid year! MARK IT DOWN! Backing him up will be the very capable Akeem Jordan, finally depth I like! (2)

SLB - Fokou will have every chance to start, and I think that is fine, but the depth will have to be salivating at seeing a 7th round pick starting, because the coaches have no real loyalty or need to prove that his is the right guy, and a good competition could knock someone into starting. The backups will probably be Ricky Sapp, a project who has tons of potential. If Hall is horrible at DE he could possibly be competing for a spot here as well. (2)

LB - Depth - I see the eagles also keeping Keenan Clayton or Jamar Chaney as depth for both the SLB and WLB position. (1)

S - Nate Allen and Mikell are our starters, thank god we got Allen, I mean seriously, how much of an upgrade over Depmps and Macho is he? No seriously, I have no idea, I haven't seen him in action at the NFL level yet, so anyone with a crystal ball please let me know how he works out, also let me know the next lotto jackpot numbers! For depth the Eagles need to keep Demps and possibly Kurt Coleman, Macho will be an emergency Safety, but he will not be listed here as he will be more of a CB. (4)

CB - Ugh, this part always messes me up. Samuel is the only Locked down starter, however it is fairly simple to say that Joselio Hanson and Hobbs will make the team and battle for the other CB spot and Nickle CB duties. Trevard Lindley seems to have good range and is capable, with Macho Harris filling out the 5th Corner Back spot. (5)

On defense we have  4 DTs + 5 DEs + 7 LBs + 4 Safeties + 5 CBs = 25 Defensive Players

STers - David Akers is our Kicker, Punter could be Ken Parrish as I think we are all tired of Kangaroo Jack Sav Rocca's inconsistency, and our Long snapper is the Magical Mike Dorenbas. (3)

Offense (26) + Defense (25) + ST (3) = 54

Yes it is a 53 man roster, with one emergency QB (Kafka).

So there we have it. The most difficult positions to make a call at would have to be LB Clayton, Keenan, Mays, and Alex Hall are all aiming for that one back up STer position. DT is also tough with Laws, Dixon, Robinson and Owens all fighting for two slots. CB seems pretty clear cut, however there will be a battle for playing time, similar to that of the WR position.

Please tell me where I f'd up, and also that I am posting this way too early, but hey, what else should I be doing to kill time before the Eagles Tickets go up for sale?

GO EAGLES!!!!!

I think

Cooper will edge out Baskett. Hes younger and seems to have alot of potential. The WR spot is, for once, an area of little to no concern. At this point the big man would just be a better redzone threat. I see Baskett getting kicked.

I can also see Cooper edging Baskett, but I don’t know if it’s a guarantee. One thing Hank has going for him is that his primary contributions — blocking and STs — don’t require him to get the ball. Since I can’t imagine a WR that far down on the depth chart will be getting a lot of passes thrown his way, that works in his favor. That said, Cooper obviously has more potential, and Baskett obviously isn’t that valuable to the team (see: he got cut last year).

11 offensive linemen is far too many. I know there’s the issue of depth, but we really don’t have any, so it’s not smart to waste roster spots on mediocre-to-awful players who have very little chance of seeing the field.

I think Shipley goes to the practice squad (if he’s eligible; otherwise, he’s gone). He was brought in to compete at center, but he’s not even getting 2nd team reps. Also, I think only one of the Tupou/Dunlap/UFA group makes it.

So now that’s 52 players (by your count). To fill up this final spot, we’ll keep both Clayton and Chaney (you only were gonna keep one).

Many of our olineman play different slots on the OLine so dont be suprised if we keep 9-10 and use Nick Cole (LG-C-RG) and Herramans (LT) as an extra back up.

the offensive line...

11 offensive lineman is not viable.

First of all, Jamaal Jackson will start the year on Physically Unable to Perform list (PUP). He will not be on the active roster until he is activated between weeks 6 and 12. I expect it to come out like this

OT: Peters, Justice, Dunlap,
OG: Herremans, Andrews, Jean-Gilles, Tupou
OC: Nick Cole, McGlynn

Practice squad , probably Austin Howard, who is getting rave reviews

I would really love to see Lindley get a lot of reps just because they basically know what they have in hobbs and hanson, hopefully he stands out to the coaches.

I've said all along, Lindley will be good,

He’s not the fastest, he’s not going to wow anyone with his speed but he does have Lockdown ability…

At kentucky he would be matched up 1v1 with some of the best in the country and he’s shut them down… I can see him making an impact late this season or even starting if we have a FS scenerio at RCB like last year…

Lindley respects WR’s speed but keeps himself in a position to make a play on the ball, which is what I think we need opposite of asante.

He would've been a late 1st or early 2nd rounder in the 09 draft, he stayed,

got hurt, was still effective just not as much as when he was healthy…

I wanted him if he came out it 09, we got him in 2010 for a shit ton cheaper.

Here's my 53

QB: Kolb, Vick, Kafka
RB: McCoy, Bell, Scott
FB: Weaver
TE: Celek, Ingram, Harbor
WR: DeSean, Maclin, Avant, Cooper, Baskett
OT: Peters, Justice, Dunlap
OG: Herremans, Andrews, Jean-Gilles, Tupou
OC: Nick Cole, McGlynn

DE: Trent Cole, Graham, Tapp, Parker, Te’o-Neshiem, Alex Hall
DT: Bunkley, Patterson, Laws, Dixon
MLB: Bradley,
WLB: Sims, Jordan, Chaney
SLB: Fokou, Clayton
CB: Samuel, Hobbs, Hanson, Macho, Lindley
S: Mikell, Allen, Demps, Coleman/???*

K: Akers
P: Rocca
LS: Dorenbos

With Marlin on IR, it is pretty clear that we will be signing a S for depth at some point in the offseason (probably snatch one after the 53 man trim-downs). We cannot seriously depend on Kurt Coleman to be our 4th S.

This leaves one open roster spot: with these contenders

Mallet
Buckley
Wright
Rucker
Collins
Chad Hall
Jurovich
Norwood
Blue Cooper
Shipley
Zipp Duncan
Reynolds
Austin Howard
McCuller
Isdaner
Moncur
Abiamiri
Sapp
Owens
Boo Robinson
Lawrence
Mays
Omar Gaither
Dimitri Patterson
Pope
Pender
Ross
Hamilton
Parrish

I’d probably go with Omar Gaither for the 53rd spot

Practice Squad:

Howard
Isdaner
Chad Hall
Jeff Owens
Ricky Sapp*
Dallas Reynolds
Pender

*I doubt Sapp will take the fake injury to be with the Eagles. If we cut him, he will probably go somewhere and be wanted, and he probably knows that.

Chad Hall is someone the Eagles really need on ST to relieve duties from Jax and Mac

KOLB is a natural born leader - something the Eagles haven't had on offense in a long long time. Prediction, we win a SB in the next 3 years.

He’s 5’8. He wouldn’t be able to shed blocks and he’d need perfect form to complete a tackle at that size.

Well

None of us actually know anything about his skills.

All I have to rely on is reports from OTAs and spending a lot of time talking to my buddy who was an 09 Air Force grad. He watched a lot of football there, obviously.

Basically, I think Hall is going to be a pretty binary turnout. I expect, once camp has gone on for a while to either be going:

“Oh. Okay. Well, that didn’t work.”

Or

“Holy Christ! The football Gods have been kind to us! Sacrifice chickens!”

I think he’ll have to realllly impress to make the team. I think we’re good with our returners of

KR: Demps, Hobbs
PR: Desean, Maclin (even though he struggled a bit last year with it), Hobbs?

So if he doesn’t really impress, I don’t see a place for him on this team.

DickMuffin's 53 man roster.

QB: Kolb, Vick, Kafka (I think we start Vick a lot in preseason and then trade him. Then we sigh Jamarcus Russell to a incentive-loaded contract, that’s right I said it. Low risk, high reward type of signing that we can possibly flip for a draft pick in the future. If he continues to be a fat, lazy asshole, then we just cut him.)

WR: DeSean, Maclin, Avant, Cooper, Hall (Baskett sucks ass)

by MightyJoeBanner on Jun 15, 2010 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions

That may be, but so was McNabb.

I’m not saying that Russel would start. I think that they would develop his talents and turn him into a draft pick. Vick wasn’t a WC guy contrary to popular belief, it wasn’t a true WC offense that he ran in ATL.

by DickMuffin on Jun 15, 2010 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Good point and agree to a point

Reid thought that he could take a really athletic guy and make him a great WC guy. With McNabb, he made him a great QB but he changed the WC offense a bit for him. Mainly he made it more vertical. His next choice was Kolb. Not so athletic but a lot more accurate. We brought Vick on for reasons never really confirmed. Speculated: to trade(he is still here), to run the Wild Cat(supposedly Reid fell in love with the idea of it) we ran the Wild cat a lot last year but not with great success. Did we keep Vick for that? Not sure?, because Andy wanted him to have a second chance much like he wants his sons to get another chance(no way to prove this), to serve as his Kolb failure plan( people are leaning heavily on this but I’m not sold Vick is here to stir up a QB controversy…but maybe). But Finally Reid drafted Kafka. Another very accurate non athletic type QB.

I dont see JaMarcus here. Bad attitude, bad teammate and doesn’t fit the offense. Vick is the first guy we picked up to possibly trade. And we haven’t traded him so….

But hey it wouldn’t be the first time I was wrong.

But you will notice that I took that into account in my first post.

I would be expecting Andy Reid (who works excellently with QB’s) to attempt to properly instruct and develop Russel’s talents and flip it for a draft pick in the future. Much like what he is trying to do with Vick right now. Bring in an undeveloped, lazy veteran QB, teach him proper mechanics, show off his progress (failed to do that with Vick so far), and trade him for a draft pick. I believe that he will also do the same with Kafka, just like Feeley. Reid will not have to change the WC offense at all though because Russel will not be starting, Kolb will. McNabb was our only option when he came in so Andy had to change it a bit to get him in ASAP. We already have a starter in Kolb so that will be unnecessary.

Don’t give us the 5-10 yards reception. Instead give us Maclin or Djax 1-1 with one safety over top. Last year they did not under any circumstance want us to get over top of them. It was 2 deep all day. So most likely we see a MLB on our RB with a QB who has the touch to lead passes away from where the zones are strong. Im so hyped over Kolbs accuracy!

yeah if they rush 5

we’re going to tear them up…

Brooking isnt that good, Hall would make a fool out of him.. Sensabaugh really doesnt seem that great, he’s an ok player, but taking him off the deep help definantly works to our advantage..

So they’d almost have to throw a LB on hall, which would work to our advantage… If I were marty, and I ran a formation like that I’d send Maclin and Jackson deep, Avant on a 5 yard and cut towards the middle and cooper on a deep post, with chad hall doing anything from going deep to taking a hand off.

Hall’s speed is a pipe dream. I can see him being a good PR but a mediocre KR for that reason. He’ll get open with quickness, but he’ll be a disappointment in the “game breaker” category

I definitely see him more as a PR than a KR.

But as important as DeSean is to us, I only want him back returning if we’re really in need of a game-changing return.

Good stuff Pierre, I've got some notes from what I've gathered at OTAs

Sapp – more than one observer said he has zero chance of being a linebacker, and that right now he is a situational pass rusher and ‘joker’ role guy. Apparently he doesn’t look fluid when standing up.

Center – Don’t be surprised if Andy lets one of the younger less experienced guys have a go either at center or guard.

Brandon Graham – Starts week 1 and the rest of the year. 13th overall pick shouldn’t be on the bench.

Cornerback – Macho looks like a quality Nickelback to me, I see Macho playing alot of snaps as a corner this year.

Safety – With Macho as an emergency guy, we have enough depth. If the coaches dont like coleman they will bring in a different guy, but if Coleman impresses at all I say they stick with the group they have.

My "t" and "y" buttons are messed up so don't bitch at me about misspelling, I'm just saying.

Sapp looks like another guy who’ll have his moments but wont amount to anything..

Center- I’d love to see McGlynn win this job, long term security there, Cole’s good but we’d get 2-4 years out of him prolly.

Graham- I hope he’s a monster.

CB- I’m banking on Lindley getting some time at RCB

Safety… Let’s just say Nate Allen better be what I think he is.

he really had a poor year last year… dropped picks, missed tackles, and slow play. Hopefully he thrives with the new talent on D, but what if he doesn’t?

I dont worry about him to much really,

however I really do see Macho harris as a prototypical SS, he’s good enough in coverage to be there, and he’s good in run support, he can definantly do good there…

I think were going to look for a SS next year in the draft or by other means…

As for our secondary I really see Lindley being the RCB of the future, he’s pretty damn good and I’d say we should almost start him and get the growing pains of Nate Allen, Graham and Lindley out of the way early.

True to a point

You never want to count on a rookie. Macho was lost last year; they put him in an impossible situation and I don’t want to see that happen to Trevard. But, if he’s doing well at Lehigh, he’ll play.

I’m sick of this Macho at CB stuff. He’s not fast enough. Stick him behind Q, and let him learn to be a SS, which is the position he’s mentally and physically suited for.

one injury to a starter

and we are faced with no depth whatsoever. The possibility of not having depth is fine at a non-lineman position, but these are the Philadelphia Eagles. If they had it their way, the whole field would be linemen and a QB.

Seriously, one major injury and we would be faced with Te’o being our #3 DT. that is not an option with the Dallas Cowboys in town twice a year.

WR – DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, Jason Avant, Riley Cooper, Hank Baskett, Chad Hall
OL – Jason Peters, Winston Justice, Fenuki Tupou, Nick Cole, A Q Shipley, Todd Herremans, Stacy Andrews, Mike McGlynn, Player not yet on roster

Defense:

DT – Mike Patterson, Broderick Bunkley, Trevor Laws, Jeff Owens

Special Teams:

K – David Akers
P – Sav Rocca
LS – Jon Dorenbos

Jamaal Jackson starts the season on the PUP. Either Baskett or Chad Hall ends up getting cut when Jackson is able to come back.

I know that it’s a cheesy way that I went on the offensive line, but I truly see the Eagles either picking up someone right as camp starts or at the end of the preseason to add depth to the offensive line. I really don’t think Dunlap makes this team.

I’m not going to venture a guess on a complete practice squad roster. Seems like a lot of times they pick up players other teams cut to round out that squad. I could see them trying to stash both Kurt Coleman, Ryan Hamilton, and Boo Robinson on IR.

Just what could a guy with a French name know about football?

Stick to hockey. It’s in your genes…

:)

Ok, just kidding there. Wanted to get your attention. This was a good pre-season post and I wanted to let you know that. So, my input:

RB – Why are you completely ruling Edlra Buckley out of the game? They guy is tiny, but he was making good tackles on special teams last year and the few times they called on him on 3rd and short he got the ball through for the first down. In 2008, the Birds had Lorenzo Booker in the 3rd position, a man who never failed to fail. I think Eldra is still in the running and one of the FNG’s will have to earn the 3rd position over him rather than the other way around.

G – You Sir, are funny devious Bastard. I spilled my coffee when I read your description of how Morningweig could have Kolb drinking through a straw, although I have more respect for MJG than you do. I’ve seen the guy play his heart out and come back from a broken leg. He will be an acceptable backup if called upon this year. I love his motivation and dedication – along with the weight-loss plan, so I am giving him another season.

C – You are dead on with Jamaal Jackson – IR this year. From what I’ve seen big guys take longer to recover from ACL’s than guys who have less weight to support. Peter’s wasn’t 100%. Look at how long it’s taking Stacy Andrews to get back into form. (I think he will.) And Peters took a few games into 2009 to get back into it as well and I think his injury was less severe than an ACL.

DE – I think the starters will be Cole and…. and … Albert Hayneworth. Well, maybe not. If McDermott hadn’t drafted so much talent at DE this year, I’d say yes, but I don’t think that after the draft they would want to pick up a $41 million attitude problem to poison the line now. Still it would be a nice dream to have that kind of talent at DE. I hope Abiamiri is gone – he’s almost good enough when he plays. WHEN he plays. They’ve put enough time into this project. He’s just too brittle.

LB – It’s gotta be better than last year. Lady Gaga at WLB, Prince at SLB and ProfileENT at MLB would be better than last year.

CB – They better keep a lot of them as backups and the practice squad because this will be the revolving door position that LB was last year.

Safety – See LB.

we are more or less hoping that these guys stick. Expect us to keep less than 7.

Guys that we drafted but might be gone:

Sapp (can he beat out Tapp, Graham, TEO, Abriami, Parker) Not sure. But I’ve read he is not doing great with his hand out of the dirt.

Clayton: He is just so small for an OLB.

Harbor: Can he block? If not he has to beat out Ingram.

Scott: Is he fast enough to get to the holes before they close on a reg basis? We have Weaver, who is big, but too slow to line up further than 3 yards from LOS, to run short yardage.

Owens: He has to beat out Laws or Dixon

Coleman: Has to beat out Demps, Macho(even though he is penciled in at CB),

Clayton is small for an OLB, but so is Ernie Sims. If he can play, size shouldn’t be a large concern.

Harbor is the best blocker we have at TE (which isn’t saying much). And remember, Ingram still needs to prove he’s healthy and Rucker hasn’t done much.

Scott’s a better RB prospect than anyone else contending to be the 3rd RB. Mallett has to adjust from the CFL, and Eldra, although a good special teamer, is small and probably replaceable.

Sapp’s a project for SAM; he’s not going to get released, since most teams would snatch that athletic talent up in a heartbeat.

And if Macho becomes a CB, we’re left with 5 safeties on the roster (one of whom is a UFA). No sense releasing Coleman unless Hamilton outplays him.

by alcatraz0109 on Jun 16, 2010 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok..

I agree with the Clayton assessment. Ernie, Fokou and Jordan are all undersized so the “he’s to small to play OLB” argument doesn’t apply in Philly.

Harbor is a rookie, we dont know what we have with him, he could be fantastic however i think he’s insurance for if Ingram takes a fall and fucks his knee up again.

Scott is going to be a player, I’m willing to argue that to the end, he was a monster in 08 and was a monster till he got hurt… I see him as our new Buck whereas Lesean = Westy.

IDK about Sapp, but if he pans out enough to make the team then I’m all for it.

Hamilton looks like a fucking LB to me, just a fast one who can cover.. I’d like to see if he can be a SS for us.

Ok..

Clayton does not equal Ernie Sims(top 10 draft pick). They are similar in style. Clayton is 6’1" 229. Basically the same size as Jordan. I’ll put it this way then..Jordan, Clayton, Gaither or Fokou..ONE is gone. Everyone has NFL experience except Clayton. Not to say he can’t make it, but it will be an up hill battle.

Harbor has never taken on an NFL LB or DE. We don’t know what he is best at. I don’t think he is gone. But I wouldn’t be surprised.

I am praying Scott is the guy who makes the team! But he might not have the speed to get to the hole. Ron Dayne ran a 4.66 forty yard dash. Scott runs a 4.68 forty. Dayne didn’t set the NCAA rushing record because he stunk. He was a great athletic big guy. He just couldn’t take a hand off(in the pros) w/o having to break a tackle in the backfield on a consistent basis. That was the same line that Tiki Barber became famous with.

Sapp I repeat Sapp was said to look lost with his hand out of the dirt. “IF” he makes the team according to reports it will be as a situational pass rusher.

We will keep 5-6 CB’s. We have every year since Reid has been here. Not the 4 that people have been posting. We will keep 4-5 safety’s. I’m guessing 4 because we will keep extra LB/DL since we have focused our efforts on our front seven this season. Safety’s are Mikell, Allen, Demps and ……….I was saying that I think the only way Macho makes the team is as a safety. So it’s Macho, Coleman or Hamilton.

by MightyJoeBanner on Jun 16, 2010 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Coleman should be able to hang on as a 4th safety.

This year, we’re probably not going to make the Super Bowl. If that’s so, I’d drop Juqua in a second to keep Sapp and bulk him up for DE duty. Don’t waste him trying to make him a SAM. If you need to use that roster spot for him, maybe that’s OK. But Sapp as Joker is the future. I’d rather struggle with him now than have wasted a 5th, lose him for nothing, and then have to draft ANOTHER DE in a few years.

Clayton and Harbor will be on this team

I only put

8 offensive lineman because I don’t really care to guess the rest.

Hall was my 3rd back. But realistically I think we pick up a cut player from another team.

Lol, are you MJB, Dmyth? Or are you the one who revealed your multiple-account disorder a few weeks ago? I can’t keep track of this shit anymore, haha.

We're not keeping 5 DT's

My "t" and "y" buttons are messed up so don't bitch at me about misspelling, I'm just saying.

Most teams

keep 5. We did not last year but Darren Howard and Chris Clemons who played both DT and DE. I think they are hoping that they can find a DT that can play the run and rush the passer. Clemons, Babin and Howard got killed last year in the last two games vs Dallas. Dallas sent in a 3 wide package and we sent out our nickel package(Clemons and Howard as our DT’s) Dallas then ran a bunch of draws and delayed handoffs and crushed us.

That's what Darryl Tapp and DTN do!

They’re expected to be situational DTs like Clemons and Howard.

So keeping 5 pure DTs would be a waste.

Thats not logic!?!?

Nor does it solve the fact that our Nickel package got abused last season. Laws was supposed to be our pass rushing DT. Again I think they’re hoping Dixon, Laws, Boo or Owens will show they have a knack for rushing the passer. Using DE’s consistently in our nickel package, other than on 3rd down is not the way to go.

I know it won't necessarily solve that problem

but neither will keeping 5 DTs. Unless we start running 5-man fronts, keeping 5 DTs is unnecessary. Ideally, we have just 4 and use TC to figure out exactly who in the Boo/Laws/Dixon/Owens group sticks out enough to make a difference.

Considering one of these guys will likely be inactive on game days, it’s not worth totally fussing over.

with the way we use situational DE's at DT

No way we keep 5… same reason as last year.

Got to drop somebody and add Dorenbos our long snapper. I would think Boo, but pray like hell for Laws
