Marlin Jackson injured at Eagles practice
Multiple reports say that free safety Marlin Jackson was helped off the team field at the Eagles OTAs. With Jackson's extensive injury record, any time he goes down it's a matter of concern. The team has said that he sustained an ankle injury. Reporters initially thought it was a knee issue.
Team trainers helped Jackson limp off the turf. Jackson appeared to be favoring his right knee. After making it to the sideline, Jackson angrily punched the bubble’s wall and appeared to be sobbing loudly. After exiting the bubble with some of the medical staff, Jackson was taken by cart to the complex for treatment. He could be seen with his hands over his eyes as the cart drove away from the bubble and toward the complex.
[Note by JasonB, 06/01/10 2:55 PM EDT ] Update - The injury was to his right ankle. Also, Todd Herremans has a sore foot that has held him out of practice.
(Note by JimmyK, 06/01/10 3:24 PM EDT) Update (link) - Jackson took off his jersey, left building crying. Not a good sign.

i think we all expected
.. to drop a safety somewhere. I guess if its someone, might as well be the injury prone one.
Still feel good about allen starting. I think we all expected it anyway.

So leaving the building...
crying is a bad sign? Oh jeez.
I mean no worries… we are so deep at DB.
Championship!
The road to victory!
I’m mostly sarcastic and this case totally.
DB was my biggest concern before this happened.
The road to victory!
Don't understand
Why DB was such a concern for everyone. We have adequate depth. Now the depth is slightly smaller, but, as I pointed out below:
1) Macho Harris gets year 2 to become more familiar with the system
2) Demps, who by all accounts should’ve played FS last year, is still around, still improving, and still hungry
3) We traded this guy from our team last year, got a pretty nice pick, and spent it in the 2nd round on Nate Allen. You don’t draft someone in the 1st or 2nd Round, and not expect them to be the future
oh, and
4) Marlin Jackson is still an unknown quanitity.
all 4 points have nothing to do with our depth at CB (except perhaps Macho, who I think should’ve been back at FS and letting Marlin play CB, but..)
At CB, We still have: Samuel, Hobbs, Hanson, and our 4th round pick Lindley. Slide Macho down and he’s #5.
We’re fine.

Fine vs. not fine
Jay, that was clearly sarcasm. I got it, anyway.
Corn, I’m one of the least doomsday Eagles fans on here, and I was definitely thinking with four possibilities at FS at least one would pan out. Now with three … who knows.
I don’t think we’re fine. But I don’t think we necessarily need Atogwe (or rather, we drafted Allen, so we’re clearly not signing him).
Ideally, Demps would pull a Winston Justice … and Allen will develop into a rotational guy/starter by midseason. And Harris can stay at slot CB/nickel package or whatever.
Someone’s getting thrown to the wolves.

Three
is still a good number.
We could be Dallas, with 0.
I’m comfortable with Allen making rookie mistake, provided like you said Demps doesn’t pull a Justice or Macho Harris hasn’t improved from last year.

Obviously your an optimistic fan Corn?( not sure what I should call you) and I appreciate that but what position is your biggest concern then. Obviously not QB either.
When I don’t know who the starter will be or I haven’t seen someone prove they can get the job done (yes Kolb) I’m concerned…. it’s a question mark.
The road to victory!
Optimistic of next season? Yes. Optimistic in life? Yes, as well. Probably because its my default when I’m not sure what to be.
I do have concerns, and actually QB is one of them. I hope Kafka shows signs of being competitive, because we’re one Winston Justice wiff away from having Justin Tuck going into Kolbs knee. I have no confidence in Mike Vick as anything more than a gimmick.
But my largest pre-draft concern was Linebacker. Ernie Sims makes me absolutely estatic, and Stu looks to be close to form. I think we work out of the dime enough that SAM doesn’t truly matter.
Now, my biggest concern is OL. Plain and simply not impressed by Stacy yet.

2) Demps, who by all accounts should’ve played FS last year, is still around, still improving, and still hungry
The problem with Demps last year was he wasn’t hungry. He thought the job was his plain and simple and rested on the fact that he was senior man at the FS position. That is why a rookie CB was named starter at FS for us. This injury does open a window for demps though now, and with his return ability he might definately get another year. (I was of the crowd that thought Demps needed to be shipped away) This opens up a spot for the best ST player. I kinda hope it is Coleman, would like to see what you can develop that kid into.

You bring in Otogwe if you missed one of the big FS’s in the draft and your primary option goes down with an injury.
He’s not going to sign somewhere, take a big paycheck, and ride the pine. Well, he would, but only in Dallas- and they actually need a safety so he wouldn’t be sitting.

Yeah
I doubt we do, but if this injury is IR material then it might not be a bad idea to bring someone in like Atogwe.
But with guys like Allen, Harris, Demps, and Coleman, I’m sure the coaches will just take a gamble and hope one of ’em can step up.
I hope....
they have otogwe on speed dial …. but im sure Reid would prefer to find another DB who has had injury problems so he can look like a genius when they work out and if they dont ten he can blame our defensive problems on injuries….someone get me lito sheppard haha

Let’s wait for more information before we write off the most experienced FS on our squad.
Besides, we all now allen is the future for the position. We have backup plans (though I doubt that includes the hero of sweden).
if it is serious, better now than later. Let allen get the reps, get some reps with demps/macho for depth, and move on. FS was going to be one of the few places we had depth anyway I felt.

Jeez, seriously
this is the freaking free safety position we’re talking about – the least important position on the defense.
everyone’s acting like Kevin Kolb tore his rotater cuff or something.
least important position? have you watched any eagles football since Reid became coach? Our FS is extremely pivotable in how our defense plays, and with McDermotts emphasis on coverage, it becomes even more important.
" If I am using this account, it is because yahoo is being whorish and not letting me sign in through that account. It is I, Talon Talent."
Actually
FS is less important with McDermott’s defense then it was in JJ’s defense. JJ no doubt blitzed a lot more, so a lot of the times he was asking his FS to cover more than he is used to. Nonetheless, still an important position.
Because Marlin Jackson made all the difference between being in and put of the playoffs...

A completely ruptured Achilles tendon requires surgery and up to 12 weeks in a cast. Partial tears are sometimes are treated with surgery following by a cast. Because the tendon shortens as it heals, a heel lift is used for 6 months or more after the cast comes off. Physical therapy to regain flexibility and then strength are begun as soon as the cast is off.

Sorry
I do NOT want to bank on a rookie to fill the FS position. Time to sign OJ for a 3 years or a large 1 year deal.
E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!
Why do we put so much stock in the FS position?
It really isn’t all that important in the grand scheme of things – it’s nice to have a playmaking FS that can cover like a blanket, but really, all you really need from your FS is the ability to tackle occasionally and cover slot receivers and tight ends sometimes.
The problem last year wasn’t the FS position. Sure, Harris/Demps/Jones weren’t Dawkins, but in the end the problem last year was offense (not scoring in those Dallas games) and linebackers who couldn’t defend the bubble screen or stop the run all that well.
We put so much stock in it ...
… because of the glaring difference between the Dawkins years and last year.
While I think we’re saying the same thing in that starting Demps/Harris/Allen won’t mean our defense is automatically awful, you’re WAY underplaying the value of a good free safety in the modern NFL.
It’s dangerous territory to try to get into who’s important and who isn’t on a defense anyway, since a playoff-type offense, like say, oh, Dallas’s, will find your weakness and expose it, even if it’s just one of the 11 positions.
Also, I’ll fight to the death on this:
but in the end the problem last year was offense (not scoring in those Dallas games)
Couldn’t disagree more. Last year was the first in a long time that offense was not the problem. Sure they scored in bunches, but generally they scored. And they would have had to score a shit-ton to overcome the atrocious second quarters against Dallas. I think the Cowboys could’ve kept on scoring if they’d had to. Certainly a team’s units are interdependent and lackluster offense can lead to bad defense, but I can’t see how anyone could have watched those two games and come away thinking “if only our offense had given us a chance.”
Ridiculous. I know our offense wasn’t good, but our D shat the bed in those games big-time.

I'll just head this off at the pass ...
… since we could probably argue back and forth and cite stats that blame one side or the other. No unit played well in those Dallas games, but I came away thinking their O could do whatever it wanted against our D … so even if we had put up 17 in the first half, they were scoring at will.

The headline on ESPN.com on the side said ‘Eagles’ Jackson ruptures achilles’… I’m not saying that they intentionally made my heart stop beating for a second, but……
That was definitely done to improve click stats … more than half the people who clicked on that didn’t even know there was another Jackson (besides DeSean) on the Eagles.
They call me The Professor.
I'm of the opinion ...
… that people don’t like to be decieved. But maybe I’m from the old new school of journalism, where headlines (even on the web) were supposed to tell people what the story is about.

Truth
I agree, and had I seen the headline I would have been just as jacked.
This is like clicking “Peterson of the Vikings shot and killed by midget prostitues.” Obviously the 2nd thing you’re thinking, after “wtf?!”, would be “Adrian Peterson?”
… stoned.
2010-11 Predictions:

I totally agree … it’s like the garbage ESPN puts up for it’s ‘INSIDER’
Example … headline “Bradshaw as the starter?”
The article says
ESPN.com NFC East blogger Matt Mosley openly wondered in a column on Tuesday whether Big Blue would make a switch at the top of their running back depth chart, promoting Ahmad Bradshaw into the starting role, with Jacobs falling down the ladder into No. 2. His conclusion is that it likely won’t happen, but a slow start could always yield a change down the road.
So I’m going to pay to find out that Mosely wrote an article WONDERING if Bradshaw could be the starter in NY? an article I can read for free by the way … WTF?
(p.s. I don’t pay for Insider I have an idiot friend who does and I use his login. )
They call me The Professor.
I don't like that either ...
… and I think it ruins your credibility. And in an age where there are dozens of choices of where to read virtually the same stuff, you’re better off earning the trust of the folks who will become your repeat traffic.
In other words, it’s short-sighted. You get the traffic spike once, but after a while, in theory, people would go elsewhere.
No idea if the numbers actually support that theory.

That's all Insider articles
Most of the time they’re just blog posts that summarize articles that are free elsewhere. It’s one thing when they summarize ESPN columns, but they even do it with local newspaper items.
That’s a travesty. To charge for content you don’t even own.

Eerily perfect timing.
It’s a conspiracy, and Atogwe is in the center of it. I have inside sources that claim that Atogwe knew all along that there would be no new CBA and that he would be a RFA this year. Knowing this, he paid off Marlin’s surgeons to partially tear his achilles tendon, so that it would fully rupture on this exact date(Atogwe Day) . As soon as phase one was completed, Atogwe killed off the everyone in the hospital so no information could be leaked out. What he planned on doing all along was to sign with whichever team picked up Marlin in the first place, after his injury. What he didn’t know is that one of the nurses escaped through the air vent and is now in the witness protection program.

Ghostbusters?

This sucks, but...
I can’t say that I didn’t see something like this happening. At least, I was not in any way pinning my hopes on Marlin Jackson starting as FS the whole year and making a big impact on the team. He was let go by the Colts for a reason – he has a big-time injury history. He’s basically the Brian Westbrook of safeties. He’s made of glass.
It would have been awesome to see him somehow get back to perfect health and become our starting FS for the next 4-5 years, but this was obviously a pipe dream.
Now, the real question is, why is FS such an important position all of a sudden? Am i mistaken here, or is FS probably the least important positiion on the field on the defensive side of the ball? Haven’t plenty of teams with mediocre FSs been able to field above-average defenses? Sure, it’s great if you have a guy like Brian Dawkins or Ed Reed making plays in the backfield, but I think having a strong front four and a good pair of cornerbacks is the most important thing for a defense. If we have to deal with a guy that isn’t quite up to the level of Dawkins,(who is), is this going to be such a big problem? I don’t think the reason the defense suffered last year was because of the FS as much as it was the poor linebacking play and the inability to get consistent pressure from the front four.
I don't think it's the least important position ...
… as you noted, a great player there can make a big difference. It’s certainly less of a priority position than DE or CB in the NFL, but I think you can make a case for it being up there with any other defensive spot. I’d probably slot it behind DT. (So I guess we agree, re-reading your post). Having a guy that can cover TEs and slot receivers and fill in run support is really nice. Your secondary looks shoddy when your safeties can do one or the other, and I bet you’re not very good on third down.
But the real question can these Eagles get by with the FSs we have. The answer to that is pretty much the same as it was, since no one was counting on Jackson as much as we were hoping.
I would say that the Westbrook of safeties would more be like a Polamalu; borderline dominant when he’s healthy enough to play.

Wow, Jackson never even made it to training camp and we lost him for the season
I think it’s safe to say he’ll never play for the Eagles and his NFL career is over.
I think they have to make a run after Atogwe or Ken Hamlin.

They won't
If they rolled last year with Demps/Macho when they had a team they thought had Super Bowl potential, they’re definitely rolling with Demps/Macho/Allen in a freebie year.
We can debate forever what they should do. Sign no one and say they’re confident in who they have is what they will do.

Well, frankly, I'm not stressing a lot.
I feel awful for him (my dad ruptured his Achilles playing tennis, and it is not a fun injury to have), but at the same time, he wasn’t guaranteed to even have a starting role. It certainly sucks losing DB depth, but right now, that’s all he was. We certainly have the guys to replace him.

I was going to say...
maybe he was just frustrated and that’s why he was tearing up but damn, out for the season.
Now if we are looking at Harris (meh) , Demps (agh) and Allen (hasn’t even played an NFL game yet) – I must officially say: I am not confident.
If its about winning… I say we sign Atogwe. We have the money and it would be a great addition to help our D. I’m just not overly confident with our D right now. SCARY

I don’t think this really changes much. I seriously doubt Jackson was going to be the starter at FS anyway — he may be a veteran, but he actually has less experience in the Eagles’ scheme than Macho or Demps AND he was coming off a major injury. Now add Allen to the mix. He was a high draft pick, and a four year starter in college. I’d be shocked if he isn’t on the inside track to be the starter. Obviously I feel bad for Jackson, and depth is always a good thing, but I don’t really think this changes the picture much.
Me neither ...
… Certainly we went from four possible options to three, but I think one of them can plug the gap. We might not have a superstar there, but again this speaks to the Eagles’ draft strategy: They went nuts on the pass rush so they wouldn’t have to.
And hopefully with a little seasoning, Allen is the man back there. Although for the millionth time, I’ll state that I’m wholeheartedly rooting for Demps to be this year’s WJA winner.

I think he was probably the favorite to start the season at FS. I’m sure the hope was that Allen would take over at some point… but I think they probably would have liked to have Jackson back there to start.
Whatever though… It was always Allen’s job. Just a question of when he take it over.

you are correct.

Weren’t we all hoping that Allen would end up winning the job anyway? The job was going to be his eventually anyway. Losing Jackson just means we have less depth/insurance. Nate Allen is the future, it just so happens that the future is now.

yup
Though I’m still not convinced demps/harris doesn’t start game 1.

Well that’s something that’s going to be decided in training camp/preseason. We really have no way of knowing right now. Whoever performs best will likely get the job. Hopefully that’s Allen.
