Eagles sign rookie safety Ryan Hamilton

Photo

The Eagles announced today that they've signed local product Ryan Hamilton, a graduate of Council Rock North High School in Newton, PA. He was a starting safety at Vanderbilt, but was injured a couple games into last seasons campaign. Before that he has started 34 straight games and was the teams' co-captain.

Hamilton is 6 feet 2, 210 pounds and he recorded 222 total tackles in his Vanderbilt career. At Council Rock North, Hamilton started for two years and was an all-state and all-area performer.

Scouting report after the jump.

Star-divide

Ryan Hamilton

Hamilton had a solid career at Vanderbilt when he was healthy, but it was bookended by a pair of major injuries that he'll have to hope scouts don't consider serious red flags. He missed 10 games in 2009 with a torn pectoral muscle, and was denied a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA despite being redshirted as a freshman due to a severe ankle injury. In between, he was a productive player, highlighted by a 104-tackle junior season that included four interceptions. Three of those came in a win at Ole Miss, including a 79-yard return for a touchdown. Hamilton has good size and adequate speed for his position, though his athleticism isn't going to blow anyone away. If he checks out physically and can show that he's not hampered by his torn pectoral, though, he may at least bring some value on special teams and in the locker room. Hamilton was a defensive co-captain before suffering his injury as a senior, but continued his duties off the field by traveling all season with the team and serving as a coach to less-experienced teammates. Hamilton also has strong bloodlines, as his father was a quarterback at the Naval Academy. He likely would have had trouble getting drafted even before the injury, but if he's healthy there's no reason Hamilton can't contribute in some way to an NFL team.

Well that pretty much seals it for Demps now

….he’s gone from a self-proclamed starter….to like the 5th or 6th safety on the depth chart….with so many return men to choose from on special teams, he’s done!

KOLB is a natural born leader - something the Eagles haven't had on offense in a long long time. Prediction, we win a SB in the next 3 years.

I don’t think an undrafted rookie is really going to seal anybody’s fate.

I agree, but why bring someone in when you already have many to choose from. Competition is good, I guess we ll have to see…..

what are you talking about?? Lets go over AAAAALL of our kick return men

Desean – Too important to the offense. Great PR but too small for KR duty
Maclin – Too important to the offense. Has never looked comfortable in KR role.
Hobbs – Coming off major neck injury and possibly starting at RCB. Really want him returning kicks??
Macho – Im as big of a fan as they come and even I was shook after his Dallas performance
Demps – So far the best option

Who am I missing that is going to push Demps off the squad??

he is really valuable as a kick returner. If Demps makes the squad it will be because of that

Hey I cant disagree with you about the CFL

…but this guy has enough talent and has much chance to make the team as most of the other rookies. Just because you havent seen much of him and he’s played in the CFL doesnt mean he’s not good. Ive seen him make some crazy plays. Reid loves quick and shifty guys. Take a look at a few articles on this guy and youll see he’s got a chance.

Him not pulling away from #22 in that first clip is a definite red flag but for all we know that guy is the Jacoby Ford of the CFL.

The clip opens up with a breakdown of his timed numbers, while his 40 time is nothing extraordinary (4.45) some of his other numbers are out of this world… 3cone drill of 6.0 would be .75 seconds faster than J.Best (fastest RB) and .45 seconds faster than the fastest at the combine. 20 yrd shuttle of 3.9 compared to D.McCluster’s time of 4.16. His broad jump of 10’6" would tie him for the best of any offensive player at this years combine… thats when I realize the disclaimer at the bottom saying all of these numbers have been estimated. How the hell do you estimate someone’s broad jump?? stupid Canadians.

by dt3 on May 28, 2010 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions

wow after watching that clip again I am puzzled how this guy even got a training camp invite. There are some clips where he shows decent speed but he never makes anyone miss, NEVER breaks a tackle. During that whole receiving section at the end he never does anything when he gets the ball in his hands, brought down nearly instantly.

by DickMuffin on May 28, 2010 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions

i wouldnt say that… my point in the first post was that you really cant say anything for sure about his speed from that video (and if there is some conclusive evidence Im not watching a 9 minute video to find it). For all we know the guy is a track star on an open field in a pair of shorts.

What you can tell from the video is that the guy has zero elusiveness and falls after 99% of first contact. Sure he stood some guys up but he was never able to make anything happen after that.

VOID!!!

by dt3 on May 28, 2010 4:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Bottom line is...

The guy still rushed over 1240 yrds in about 213 attempts, which gives him about 5.8yrd per carry. Yeh its the CFL, but he plays against the same defenses all the time (theres only like 6 or 7 teams) ..and theres an extra guy on the field ….AND he was a rookie…..The Eagles obviously saw something in him that isnt on this You tube video if they signed him…We ll just have to wait and see. But having seen him live, all I can tell you is IF he can adjust to the NFL, he would be a good weapon for this team….

Unless everyone else in the CFL ...

….is THAT FAST!!!!!! Hahahaha ….yeh….right!

It will be interesting, however how it all plays out… cause Buckley and Scott arent very fast either….but I am a big fan of C.Scott….he’s a power runner, which we def need… Can’t wait till the pads come on to find out…..Now enough of this….. Beer is calling

Speed is not Scott's style of play though.

He’s a power back who runs through people. Mallett’s style of play is in the mold of McCoy. Smaller size, but speedier and more elusive. But Mallett doesn’t possess the speed and elusiveness that McCoy has. You never know what can happen though.

No more 3-1...4th inches....QB sneak...

or 3-1 pass….4-1 pass….with the addition of Harbour and a healthy Ingram…..stack Weaver and Scott….man they can finally start smashing some faces….and keep us from wanting to break our TVs because of Reid’s bad play calls of McNabbs bad throws in those situation..

In that first play it looked like he got caught from behind by a white guy!

I had to look on the Montreal Alouettes roster and #22 was listed as Étienne Boulay. C’mon man! A brother can NOT get caught from behind by some faux French white dude.

I think that we held off on the "Championship" declaration because we didn't want to bust on a local guy

But I agree with you whole heartedly. We need to do a better job, even if it is the off-season. BGN has a reputation to uphold and I expect everyone to bring it every day.

I'd rather have Brooks

Better a punter who would, at minimum, push Captain Inconsistent instead of a camp body who has about as much chance of making the roster as I do.

Brooks was horrible. Sav isn't even THAT bad.

Better to have depth at a position that is more meaningful to a team – no need to keep 3 punters for TC.

Sounds like a special teams specialist to me

2010-11 Predictions:

Kevin Kolb will go to the probowl and complete >65% of passes.

Jeremy Maclyn will have more receptions than Miles Austin & Steve Smith

Graham will have the starting LDE spot tied up by week 5, win ROTY, and have >10 Sacks

11-5 finish.

Seriously, the Eagles need to be called Injuries-R-Us.

Jim Johnson(RIP). Brian Westbrook(36). Donovan Mcnabb(5). Brian Dawkins(20). Sheldon Brown(24). Jeremiah Trotter(54).

Thanks for the memories...

it’s not a big deal we cut a punter and had a spot to kill for camp maybe they wanted to push the safeties a little hard by signing a guy like this.
