Knee surgery leaves Victor Abiamiri's season in doubt
Many people were surprised to see the Philadelphia Eagles take three defensive ends in last week's draft even after trading for another during the offseason. Yesterday it became a little more clear as to why. It was revealed that Victor Abiamiri had microfracture surgery on his knee and his season is in jeopardy.
"It's a big injury," Eagles trainer Burkholder acknowledged. "It's a thing that's knocked some guys out of playing. But plenty of people have come back and played, too. So he's got youth on his side."
"When we put together this roster, we knew he may not be available Opening Day," Burkholder said.
The surgery was performed on February 9th, so suffice to say he's got a long way to go. So when you look at the sum total of defensive ends out this offseason, it makes the number of defensive ends in understandable. Chris Clemons was traded, Darren Howard cut, and now Abiamiri is possibly out for the season. Taking their place is Brandon Graham, Daniel Te'O-Nesheim, & Daryl Tapp, with Ricky Sapp working at both SAM and defensive end.

story of his career so far, sorry but injuries happen and it’s time to let him go, there are lots of DE’s on this roster after the draft so its time to cut him, if you can darren howard who was an effective player then it’s time to release this guy also.
Will he ever be healthy? This is nothing new…

The answer to that is..
No. He’s always injured.. And having 5(?) other DE’s on the roster (Cole, Tapp, Graham, Te’o-neshaim, Sapp if you count him) doesn’t help.
The Eagles WILL redeem themselves in the '10-'11 season, with a win at SuperBowl 45 in Dallas!

I recall seeing flashes. But they were too far in between.

Yeah, flashes of talent/potential is the best way to describe it.
Besides that, unproductive.

what is it with this team and DEs?
Mamula, Burgess, McDougal, Kearse, now Abiamiri. All of them saw their careers either stall or end due to injury.

I still can’t believe Ray Rhodes took Mamula over Sapp…

And they were concerned because Sapp testest positive for marijuana
And we all saw how that affected Sapp’s career

Remember that feeling after the draft, when you’re like “why so many DEs drafted”?
Yeah, the other shoe dropped.
Told you it would.

in all fairness to McDougle…i think the fact he got shot had something to do with him never meeting expectations.

TOO BAD.............
Yet another de with vast potential who just never hit his stride, i say we trim the fat now and part ways with him asap, better 2 let the young guys get in there and see wat we got with them. Hopefully they turn out 2 be better then Andys previous DE picks, for a guy who loves linemen he really sucks at picking them. Besides Cole who has he really hit on??
I think hitting on a DE is one of the hardest positions to get right, after QB and WR. There are so many highly drafted DE’s who bust. Hope Andy got it right this time.
i shutter............
at the thought of mcdougle, bryan smith, mamula, etc. i hope graham doesnt fall into that company. I actually think ricky sapp is gonna be a great player.
Don’t think he has ever really been in the discussion.
VOID!!!

I thinking Tapp. Wouldn’t make sense to throw Parker in there and wear him down. Tapp should have a lot more endurance during games and better recovery week to week. We will get much more (per play) out of Parker if we use him sparingly.

Also, unless Graham is simply amazing from the get go, I have a hard time envisioning him being a starter in the NFL from day 1. I’m guessing Tapp starts the season as the starter and then Graham takes over at some point during the season.

Yes, I’m thinking tapp too, with graham giving strong competition. Thinking parker may end up spelling cole on the end, giving him early down rest later in the game

He's done
Burkholder is being pretty optimistic. Overwhelming odds are that Abiamiri’s pro career is just about over.
It is hard to call a guy a ‘bust’ because he mostly missed time due to injuries but even when he was on the field last year he didn’t do much.
never too early
for the sky to start falling on this team.

In light of this injury, I completely rescind my whole “Juqua Parker is gone” theory.

Yeah it seems like it would make sense to keep a reliable guy around.

Always makes sense.
Looks like our 4 de will be cole and tapp to start, and parker/graham swapping in.
I wonder of graham will work out at LDE. Moving Cole to strong side…

We've got Hall too
Don’t know what the plans are for that guy; if we could bulk him up to 265 or so, he could be a solid backup DE. Don’t know if they want him at LB though, but it seems like we’re willing to roll with Fokou, Sapp, and either Chaney/Clayton at SAM
Anyway, I’d rather take my chances with Tapp, Graham, T’eo-Nesheim, Cole and Hall for a season than squeeze one more season out of Parker. We’re only going to have to replace him in a season or so anyway. If they’re making a youth movement, try to deal Parker for a pick or something.
Without Abiamiri, Parker instantly becomes more valuable than any pick we could get for him.

Additionally, t’eo is sliding inside to DT isn’t he?
by corn on the kolb on May 2, 2010 1:55 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
T'eo becomes
the new Darren Howard – situational DE/DT.
Berries are nice, but Graham crackers taste pretty good too.
Tbh the dime package of cole bunkley t’eo tapp/graham with stew in the middle… and I think we’re deep at cb and safety coverage is not a concern. That d-line will do well. I think t’eo in at de on a 3-n-short would be solid too.
And, to clarify, deep at cb doesn’t mean we have a number two. Just means 3-and-4 are solid options. Asante, hobbs, marlin, hanson are depthful.
by corn on the kolb on May 2, 2010 4:09 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
He’ll be a sort of tweener, completely situational, but still multi-situational. D-line work on special teams, dt on 3rd-n-longs, and perhaps de on short. Kinda guy reid likes. Multitaskful.
And I’m so stoned right now. Hope it makes sense.
by corn on the kolb on May 2, 2010 4:13 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I could almost see it if he bulks up
Many of his highlights are from DT. Doubt he would ever be up to 290lbs though so maybe not. I doubt he is fast enough from the outside to be a big pass rusher from that spot. Not sure how he does against the run.
More wishing he will be good than expecting. Would really like to have a dominant inside pass rusher though.
Can you cut an injured player?
I think they would have to put him on IR and pay out his final season. Assuming he recovers I wonder if he has great comeback year like Burgess did for some other team. No reason for Eagles to keep him at this point though.
Parker had 8 sacks last year and we should cut him for some unproven rookies? Parker has been a good player and is versatile. He plays special teams, has played Joker, has been DT on 3rd down, can play LDE or RDE. Unless Hall or Sapp is just amazing I would prefer Parker. Plus maybe we could convince Cole to rest some if Parker is filling in.
I'd prefer not to cut a rookie or recent pick up with promise in favor of JP
I think Tapp can easily replace what Juqua gives us from a starter; and probably Graham too by the end of the year. The other guys can replace him as a backup and for special teams.
By next year, he won’t be missed
