Finding the RB to complement McCoy
I cant think of a player I have been more up/down on in such a short amount of time. I went into the draft with him being a distant 5th of the RBs I was reaally interested in (Moreno, Wells, Brown, Greene) but over the course of the year he slowly won me over. While I knew he would never be a brian westbrook or a solo #1 back (do they make those anymore??) I thought he could be something if put in the right situation.
I dont know what happened as time has passed but I have completely fallen out of love with the guy and in turn fallen for a handful of RBs that are projected to go around where we picked mccoy last year. I did get excited when I came up with an idea during my mock draft ( http://bit.ly/chSTRT ) about pairing him up in an earth, wind, fire trio with dexter mccluster and lagarrette blount but that idea was quickly shot down when I was reminded of the Mike Bell signing. Looking at all of the different possibilities with that trio and the relatively small amount we actually have guaranteed to Bell (500K) I dont think its completely improbable to see us bring in those 2... but at the same time not very likely.
With all that being said, assuming Mike Bell makes it through training camp, who else do we bring in?? Does anyone else even view this as an area we need to address in the draft?? Maybe with Donovan around we could squeeze by with those 2 but I really think we are going to have give Kevin some more to work with if we want him to succeed. Do we look at a big power back (Gerhart, Blount) or does Weaver got that under control?? Do we look for a smaller scat back (best, mccluster) or is that supposed to be Shady's area??

the Eagles really like Toby Gerhart and Jonathan Dwyer
as 3rd round prospects. Just keep an eye out for them ;)
Uh. Weaver?
Considering the dude had 85 touches last year and we didn’t start using him until week 8, it’s pretty simple to think he is the second running back.
RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.
Hey, look, my sig isn't overly big!
But were those 85 touches a choice of the coaching staff or a necessity. I like Weaver alot but its not like the coaching staff had much choice when BWest went out and the only real options were him, McCoy, and Buckley. I like Weaver alot and would have no problem with him being the second back (would prefer third) but that brings up another question… If Weaver is thought of as our 2nd RB does that mean we go into this draft looking for another FB??

no
fullbacks have longer ‘shelf lives’ and the eagles just made him the highest paid fb in the league, so im sure they intend to use him. i think the eagles might take a swing at one rb in the draft if they like him and he falls to the eagles, but this draft is to fill in the buckshot spray holes in the defense and oline
Where one era ends, another begins
Bell will make it through camp
He was very good in Denver (but then again who wasn’t) and solid in New Orleans. I think he puts up around 400-500 yards in a compliment role to McCoy; we have to run it more this year with Kolb starting.

I agree with you that we need to run more this year but if we come up to 55/70/87 and we think that McCluster/Tate/Best/Dwyer whoever it might be is the best player available I dont think Bell (or even McCoy) is a big enough talent for us to pass them up.
Then if we do come up into camp with McCoy/ROOKIE/Bell plus Weaver I really dont see where Bell fits in and gets his touches… If our third RB is looking at getting that few touches I would rather take a chance on a late rounder like Blount, Staffon Johnson, or even Brandon James. (The guarunteed portion of Bell’s contract plus a late rounder would still be considertably less than his full salary).

Bell still fits in, I think
I agree, we should definitely bring in another RB. But even if we do I think Bell will still be involved to some extent.

Bell is our pounder...
if we draft a guy I expect a McCoy/Westbrook clone. 3rd or later round that can be explosive/ pass catcher
Agreed – I’m expecting a clone as well – ball security being priority uno for FO.

Man, so much hatin’ on Shady. Just curious, what did he do that he caused him to fall out of favor with you – it was just his rookie year. I disagree with your assessment or evaluation of the running back talent from last year’s draft. Yeah, I liked Moreno too, but overall, I thought McCoy was the best all-around runner. If you watch video of him, you can see that he has pretty fluid and quick hips to make cuts, and since the beginning of the season, I’m hearing that he put on 10-12 lbs (prob more to be added). Little power with that shiftiness spells potential for Shady. LeSEAN McCOY…. hoo hah! Ok…..took it too far.
Gotta give shady his chance...
The cut that he made in the bears game to seal the win showed me that he might be able to become something nice. And Buckley has to keep his spot for the simple fact that he can play special teams and actually tackle. He was regularly the first one down the field. And, I dont know how good it would be to replace him with the guys you fellas mentioned for the simple fact that I wouldn’t want a potential future #1 back to be subjected to those kinds of hits.
