A Disturbing Trend

I have noticed a trend over the past 3 years that I am sure most of you have noticed too. For 3 straight years the Eagles have gone into the season with a serious and glaring hole in the roster. Not only that, but every year the position that we have a hole at has become more significant. I am worried that we are about to see a 4th. Please note that this is not a management bashing post, I happen to trust Reid, I am sure he knows more than me. I just want to gauge everyone else's perception of this trend.

Star-divide

Observations

2007-Punt Returner- Eagles decide to let J.R Reed and Greg Lewis fight for the punt return position.... They both lose. They also lost the first game of the season against the Packers for us. Reno Mahe gets a call and we all sigh in relief every time he fair catches a punt.

This is the start of the trend and I would not really complain about it if it wasn't followed by 2 more seasons of similar follies. I also believe we missed the playoffs by one game that year. If we had a competent punt returner for the Green Bay game, we make the playoffs.

2008-Full Back- Eagles have a stable of running backs and not enough roster spots for them. The great Lorenzo Booker will be the savior so Tony Hunt is the odd man out. So Reid decides to turn Tony into a full back. After 6 terrible full back performances he is cut for Dan Klecko, a DT/FB hybrid??? Klecko does ok, but we really missed having a real fullback, the red zone performance that year was terrible.

I don't necessarily hate the idea of converting Tony, he had just been drafted the year before and they did not want to give up on him. However, to let him sit around for 6 games was a bad decision. To me, this was a case of Reid outsmarting himself, a real full back would have helped that year.

2009-Free Safety- Jesus' dad decides to move to Denver. Eagles replace him with_______? To this day I still do not know what the plan was. I guess most of us assumed Quentin Demps would be the starter. He had a decent rookie year with the usual ups and downs. To put it simply this position was not won by anyone, instead it was lost by several. Demps lost it to Macho who then lost it to Sean Jones. Sadly there was no one else to lose it too so he had to stay on the field.

This blunder was pretty disturbing. It honestly felt like we were playing with 10 people on defense at times. I rarely saw Macho around the ball. Sean Jones seemed a little better but not by much.

2010- Right Cornerback- This leads up up to the 2010 season. Are we going to see a repeat of history. Who will be our starting corner? Hobbs? Hanson? Macho?

Now I will admit we are not in as bad a spot as we were with the other positions. Like him or not, Hobbs was a starter at one point. If he does start I expect an ok starter, but with the quality of corner we are used to, it will feel like a big disappointment. But there is also the question of how healthy he is, I mean he almost lost his career last year.

______________________________________________________________________________________

The funny part of this trend is that the year after having no one to fill the position, we get a very good player to fill the need.

After 2007, DeSean steps in as PR and becomes arguably the best PR in the game. Then after 2008, Weaver is signed and considered by many as the best FB in the game. Now we have Nate Allen, who will be the best safety in the game! .... No I am sure not, but the FO decided to use a high draft on him so at least they are addressing the issue.

Now to my main point of this post. Should I be worried? Are you guys worried? I think just about everyone expected a corner to be taken in 2nd round or 3rd at the very latest. There are mixed views of Lindley, I am not going to pretend to know much about him. But I doubt he will be the starter this year. I am sure in a year or two he will be solid, but what about this year?

Good points

But I think you’re thinking too much into this. The first two years I completely agree on- there was no excuse for Reid and Co. to not even have addressed those positions.

But then the FS issue last season wasn’t Reid’s fault. I mean, we DID pick up Sean Jones. We DID draft Macho Harris. It’s not like the man ignored these positions like he did the previous two years.

Same with this year with the CB spot- we brought in Marlin Jackson, we still have Harris, we drafted Lindley (who, may I remind you, that if it weren’t for that injury, would’ve been a 2nd rounder). We’re addressing the holes.

Now it’s just a matter of the personnel doing their job…and doing it right.

But I think you’re thinking too much into this

For future reference… If you point out that we have glaring hole at a very important position you will be accused of thinking too much. Whats the point of having a talented CB like Asante when the opposite side of the field is allowed to run free??

Marlin Jackson 1) was brought in as a safety 2) has never played NFL CB outside of a cover2 system 3) is coming off acl surgery 4) was never that fast to begin with. Anyone who thinks he can guard rcvrs on an island in our blitz happy system either 1) needs to put down the kool aid 2) is a fool.

what about the year he kept jim mcmahon as the only backup qb???that was painful…that said, i do like reid and despite his shortcomings i still think he is a very good coach (hey it isn’t entirely his fault mcnabb would go into shock if he had to think…) now that the worminator has finally been shipped off we might see a real two minute drill and some redzone efficiency… last year was a dissapointment from the day bradley got hurt… followed by ingrahm and then jack ikegwanu turned out to be slower than whatever… and it didn’t help that the andrews sisters failed to show up, jackson got hurt and westbrook disintegrated… on the plus side maclin and mccoy were great as was jackson… weaver… celek… avant… kolb!!!! the death of jj was not exactly helpful but mcdermott showed real ability in a terrrible situation…

i am very excited about the team… mcstupid is finnaly gone (and vick soon as well… I hope!!!!)…it seems like the team is going to run the ball… and with kolb’s accuracy and leadership this could be the beginning of a real champioship run… the defense with these young speed rushing ends and fast linebackers… the draft was terrific and a couple of the free agents look like steals…plus bradley is back… it all makes for something to look forward to.

Indy won a Super Bowl and got to the Super Bowl last year with a defense predicated around pressure from two top DEs. That’s what we’re going for this year. If Graham isn’t the player Andy Reid expects him to be, then this hole will be a weakness. If Graham is the player we expect him to be, we have nothing to worry about.

You're not the first one to notice

Its actually fairly obvious. We always wait till the next year to pick up a place we have a glaring hole. I’m not saying we have one now because the off season is still young and we don’t know where the actual hole is yet.

by macjack09 on Apr 27, 2010 8:32 PM EDT reply actions

I think this is the most important point

“After 2007, DeSean steps in as PR and becomes arguably the best PR in the game. Then after 2008, Weaver is signed and considered by many as the best FB in the game. Now we have Nate Allen, who will be the best safety in the game!”

Allen hyperbole aside, if we leave a hole at Corner I expect someone will be brough in next year to upgrade the position. I’d say its a good bet next year’s top pick is a Corner, or we will bring in a free agent or make a trade, or all three. Reid values the position so it won’t be a weakness for long.

1st of all, relax gentlemen.. we’re under a new regime… I have faith that by the start of training camp the cb2 position will be solidified… Keep in mind a lot of people will disagree, but Macho is a great corner… Last year was his rookie year in which the eagles asked him to convert from his natural position (cb) to a safety, something he really didnt know.. AR drafted him for a reason, hes a good cb.. I do agree we need versatility but give him and fokou a chance, they will pan out.. Now i know you guys watched all the games last year and you have to admit Macho didnt make the big plays but he is a solid tackler with a nose for the ball.. I’m more than confident that if we dont pick up someone than macho will pick up the slack… we all know hobbs isnt the answer especially after neck inj.. 2nd year always is better as they say…

This is not the same

I’m not going to act like these guys are great… But guys like Ellis Hobbs and Marlin Jackson have started multiple seasons at corner in the NFL. Joselio Hanson has started multiple seasons. Lindley and Macho were 4 year starters at corner in college.

This is not exactly the same as having no guy who’d ever played FB on the roster or sending out Greg Lewis to field punts when he’d never done it at any level.

It’s not great, but it’s not the same as those other examples.

Yeah, I’m not worried at all. Yes, it’s unlikely we’ll have someone as good as Brown was the last few years. However, between Jackson, Lindley, and Hobbs, one should be able to step up and play at an acceptable level. Lindley is interesting to me amongst this group.

To be honest I love Lindley, I'm going to try and avoid a Ikekdone scenerio where I

make a screen name saying he’s better than a perenial probowler though.

Lindley was one of the better CB’s coming out of 2008, and he did it with a messed up Elbow which he played with most of the year. He shut down Harvin that year, he shut down a few other big name WR’s from 06-08, then in 09 he got his ankle landed on weird and wasnt the same, however he played when the team doctors allowed him to and was still effective.. He’s got Shut down ability and can be Asante after the INT..

If Lindley can grasp the playbook and defense by TC and he performs well during TC we will have the makings of a great CB…

That is an awesome last name dude my last name is lame Maw.

maw [ maw ] (plural maws)

noun
Definition:

1. animal’s mouth: the mouth, jaws, throat, or stomach of an animal, especially a carnivorous animal that devours food greedily

2. greedy person’s mouth: the mouth, throat, or stomach of a greedy person ( informal )

3. gaping hole: anything that seems like a gaping hole that devours things or people
the ravenous maw of readers’ expectations

But Udalango is my middle name, and actually my name on facebook right now is Udalango Bango cause i got tired of all the fake ass people from my high school thinking ill add them because we went there together and i hated most of them

just decided they should add something to the health care bill. Everyone should be made to get a membership to a gym and must use it. If not then they should be penalized for not taking care of themselves. All in favor? Oh wait...it doesn't matter what we think.

Haha thats aight

I mean it wouldnt bother me I prolly know you better than about 80% of the people that added me. When you think about how I barely know you it makes that way crazier I usually dont deny people cause if they found me they really wanted to. Some people add me for my name others name me for my picture. I can lick my elbow people find it fascinating. I looked you up. 9you are the fourth matthew antoniak BTW) Thought about adding but thought whatever Ill let him come to me if he wants I dont add anyone mostly because I hate and am hated because i have no filter over what gets said verbally. Typing usually lets me root out offensive in the extreme comments. Oh and I only have like 4 Eagle friends on facebook haha

I consider a noob (alternatively n00b) to be someone who gets pwned. And as you hae not been pwned yet you are still a new guy.

nah

we could .. they would prob take a second rounder next year for him .. or a third and hobbs or hanson ..

by jack is better than asante on Apr 28, 2010 12:55 AM EDT up reply actions

I just don’t like giving up future picks. I could see Jordan + Ingram + Hobbs + a 6th for Asomugha. Don’t get me wrong, I like Ingram and Jordan, but I could see one of them being traded.

With the way this team drafts giving up one pick wouldnt be the worst thingw

we would just pick up like ten more along the way haha

I am convinced

That something has happened to Al Davis. First they have a reasonable draft, now I heard reports last night they are goin to release JaMarcus Russell. He must be in a coma or something.

Either way, it’s not helping our hope for Asomugha.

Don't forget, we're talking about the Raiders

Jordan is too small, Ingram is too skinny, Hobbs is too short. They wouldn’t want any of those dudes

About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.

by IronHank on Apr 28, 2010 10:48 AM EDT up reply actions

haha

they will want demps .. hes fast and athletic

by jack is better than asante on Apr 28, 2010 10:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah but Ingram and Hobbs are both fast and athletic and They need a LB. If it was gonna happen I could see at least Hobbs or Ingram involved.

I have faith that Juron will be able to coach them up but...

the big recievers in the leauge, ecspecialy the big guys Dallas has, are going to go right through Assante and Hobbs. I hope Marlin makes his way into our starting line up. Without Sheldon, we are lacking that physical presence

by MeanGreen5 on Apr 28, 2010 8:16 AM EDT reply actions

"Perfect" Duo of CBs

I don’t know why you guys are so worried! We have the two starting CBs from the only team to go 16-0 in a season… Hobbs and Samuel.

No, but seriously, this is a valid concern. However, I don’t think it’s as gaping a hole as we think. Like some people have mentioned above, Hobbs and Jackson have started multiple seasons at CB. And although I don’t like Hanson all that much as an outside CB, he could still possibly make that jump. Then we have Dmitri Patterson who showed some promise at times last year and Macho and Lindley who started four years in college.

There are options at CB. We’re just going to have trust Andy (I know, EvilBanner, that might be hard for you) and hope one of these guys prove himself as a starting-caliber corner.

by Smitty2K3 on Apr 28, 2010 9:42 AM EDT reply actions

i think or hope.........

Lindley will have the nickel if not #2 spot locked down by week 8.

by goldenbird09 on Apr 28, 2010 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

That'd be dream scenario #1

If Lindley pans out to be a starter in year 1, I’d be shocked… but ecstatic nonetheless.

by Smitty2K3 on Apr 28, 2010 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions

It's not a gaping hole?

Hobbs is coming off of a major neck injury — one that, for some time, was thought to be the end of his career. Even if he is healthy to start the season, how ready will he be if he’s missed most/all of training camp? Lets be really optimistic and say he participates fully in all of camp/preseason and is ready to go for the opener — do you really feel comfortable with Hobbs at RCB? He’s never impressed me with his coverage. There’s a reason that New England got rid of him.

I haven’t seen much of Marlin Jackson to formulate an opinion on his play, but by all accounts he lacked speed before he blew out his knees — is he going to be ready to play? When? Has he lost a step at all?

I’m not even going to address Hanson starting out at RCB. If he’s the starter, we’re in trouble.

I don’t see how this could be described as anything but a gaping hole in the secondary. If people want to Dave Spadaro the topic and bring up names like Dimitri Patterson, more power to you, but it’s a huge problem in my eyes with the injuries, lack of talent and lack of experience.

by Greg M on Apr 28, 2010 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I can't really argue against your viewpoint.

All I can do is trust Andy and assume that either a player proves himself this year or a better pass rush will help the lack of talent and experience at CB.

The CB position as a whole concerns me too… just maybe not as much as it does you.

by Smitty2K3 on Apr 28, 2010 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions

As always...

the problems during the season will have nothing to do with what we see now. Training camp will claim some casualties. some of the guys will stand taller than ever before. Some will lose their heart. Anyway, the weaknesses at the end of the season won’t have a thing to do with what we see now – I think.
