With the 135th overall pick the Philadelphia Eagles select Clemson DE Ricky Sapp

via www.draftseason.com

With the 3rd pick in the 5th round Philadelphia Eagles have selected Ricky Sapp, DE Clemson. Sapp was one of the 30 players the Eagles invited to Philly for a pre draft visit.

Many people feel Sapp projects as a SAM in the NFL. NFL.com quick take

Sapp is an undersized, athletic defensive end who has growth potential. He is a competitive player but tends to be more of a finesse defender against the run. He shows good initial quickness off the line of scrimmage as an edge rusher with the ability to close well to the quarterback. Sapp is a solid reacter who has enough agility and quickness to stand up as an outside 'backer in a 3-4 defensive scheme. His size, versatility and athleticism should bode well as a special-teams contributor, as well as providing depth to a defense at the next level.

Soooooo, are we done with DE’s now?

Satan is just a coping mechanism for monotheists.

I don’t want to sit here and insinuate that a position change is in order for every player, but with all of these ends I would imagine that at least one of them is moving to LBer?

by mrb5091 on Apr 24, 2010 12:09 PM EDT reply actions

Strong side, Gocong 2.0, i think Sapp will be better

by 410eaglesfan on Apr 24, 2010 12:09 PM EDT reply actions

I’m pretty sure Sapp will be moved to SAM as well.

by JasonB on Apr 24, 2010 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions

6’4 252 ran a 4.65. I HOPE the eagles utilize him like the Skins utilized Orakpo

I would assume McD will be drawing up some great SAM blitzes with Sapp.

I hope cause he sure as hell didnt do any with Gocong. I remember two instances last year where Gocong blitzed, one was vs the cowgirls in the playoffs and i cant remember the first.

Talk about the shotgun approach to DEs between the offseason and the draft…

Tapp
Graham
Teo’what’shisfuck
Sapp

I guess one or two will work out

"I tried to run him over but Eli had his big boy pads on and he kind of stopped me from getting in the end zone. The next time I’ll try to jump over his head.’’ - Asante Samuel

Sapp is only 250lbs, hes gonna work in at SLB most likely

by 410eaglesfan on Apr 24, 2010 12:10 PM EDT reply actions

Forget having a linebacking corps…we’re just fielding a defense full of DEs. Gonna be a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks haha.

by joetimek on Apr 24, 2010 12:10 PM EDT reply actions

3 DE taken so far… Juqua Parker and Victor Abiamiri good as gone?

RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

at least one of them...

two of the might be linebackers though

I think they use him at Strong side but cant they just freakin’ pick players that specialize in their position? Didn’t we try this with Gocong?

4 Defensive ends. What? Are they THAT scared to pick busts?

Do you know just how many players switch positions out of college. It happens all the time. It’s not the like Eagles only do this. All teams so. College DEs to pro OLB is a pretty common move.

by JasonB on Apr 24, 2010 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I know. I’m not opposed to this pick. I think it could turn out great. Sapp is a pass rush specialist though, not good in coverage, yet.

I’m singling you out… THis is something I hear from a lot of Eagles fans and I don’t think people realize how common this is around the NFL. Half of the DEs that get picked this year could very well end up as LBs of some sort in the NFL. Most common in 3-4 but also as SAMs.

hes lazy

he doesnt play up to his potential .. he has all the skills to be dominant .. and flashed those skills but wasnt as dominant as he should have been .. he also was hurt

Our front 7…

Sapp, cole, bunk, patterson, graham, and t’o all with their hands in the ground. Stew playing linebacker, and darryl tapp is still wondering why he came to philly.

SOme people will say this was a great value because he was “projected” to go higher… but obviously teams didn’t agree.

Honestly, I’m more wary of a higher projected guy that drops that I am for a so called “reach” pick at this point in the draft. With a “reach” teams are seeing something good, with a slider teams saw things they didn’t like.

by JasonB on Apr 24, 2010 12:15 PM EDT reply actions

Who of those guys were considered sliders that were projected higher?

maybe Bradley because he’d had a knee injury…

by JasonB on Apr 24, 2010 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I remember Celek being projected in the third. Cole, I can’t remember. Gibson is another good example. He was projected in the second round in 2008, stayed in school then projected in the 4th because of system changes. Eagles got him in the 5th and used him to get Witherspoon. He had 34 catches in just 4 starts(9 games) with the Rams.

gibson was never projected to go that high .. hes a 4th or 5th wr at best

by jack is better than asante on Apr 24, 2010 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t remember where he was projected, but I do know that his stocked dropped bigtime in his senior year because his team was so bad and it hurt his production.

by JasonB on Apr 24, 2010 12:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes. These are the kind of picks I expected in the 4th. Good talent, dropped, and picked up later for higher value. This is a better method in my opinion.

I like this pick…looks like Akeem Jordan can pack his bags too, or at least get ready for a season on the bench. I’d rather have a young inexperienced linebacking corps than a consistently mediocre one…

by ytylerdurden on Apr 24, 2010 12:18 PM EDT reply actions

No offense

But they usually do. Sometimes it blows up, sometimes it works. But with the amount of successful lower round players—and undrafted players—in Reid’s tenure certainly calls for us to at least not crucify him, ya know?

by Dylan Marck on Apr 24, 2010 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Not much help at safety? DId you notice them take the 3rd rated safety in the draft?

And they’ve now picked 2 LBs.

by JasonB on Apr 24, 2010 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Dropped a few rounds from an ACL surgery his junior season because he publicly admitted to playing his sr. year at 60%. Could be a steal if he plays at 100%

The Eagles are going to have such a great 3-4 defense next year. Too bad they play a 4-3.

There’s going to be a lot of pressure on the offense to score early. If the Eagles can get a lead, they should be good against the pass. If they have to stop the run, though, watch out. It seems like every defensive player they’ve drafted has been described as “undersized.” This could be a long season if the Eagles offense doesn’t jump ahead of teams early.

Well Juaron betterr be as good of a secondary coach as he is hailed as

just decided they should add something to the health care bill. Everyone should be made to get a membership to a gym and must use it. If not then they should be penalized for not taking care of themselves. All in favor? Oh wait...it doesn't matter what we think.

very injury prone at ole miss but being an ole miss fan he was awesome when healthy could be a very good situational pass rusher
