Cosell: Graham "the best all around defensive end in the draft"
Greg Cosell, an analyst from NFL Films, was a guest on 97.5 the fanatic yesterday to talk NFL Draft. If you've never heard him, Cosell has access to all the coaches tape and breaks down a ton of film. He actually was on well before the Eagles made their pick and was discussing a few possible Eagles targets. First, he said how he expected the Eagles to either take a defensive end or a corner/safety. He actually said that he really liked Earl Thomas and said that from all the tape he's seen he thought Thomas was a better player that Eric Berry. Then, the hosts asked him about defensive ends and whether he thought Jason Pierre-Paul or Derrick Morgan was the better player. His answer?
Overall the defensive end I like the most is Brandon Graham from Michigan. I think Brandon Graham has got the same body type as Dwight Freeney. Now he's not quite as explosive as Dwight Freeney, but I think he's the best all around defensive end in this draft. I would have Paul second and I would have Morgan third.
He said Morgan was a very energetic player, but doesn't make as many plays.

Is Greg Cosell related to Howard Cosell?
Brandon Graham is a great end, but I am very much a draft for need guy. Which means the next picks had better focus on that depleted secondary.
Officially contributing to worldwide confusion since 1997
I think the Eagles always draft better when they do it for value/BPA.
Ala Maclin. Not to mention, LDE might not be as big a need as secondary, but it’s still a need. I’m bullish on the pick and can’t wait to see what happens tonight.

just decided they should add something to the health care bill. Everyone should be made to get a membership to a gym and must use it. If not then they should be penalized for not taking care of themselves. All in favor? Oh wait...it doesn't matter what we think.
I agree we need secondary help
but when you have Graham and the Cole-train in the O’s face, who is gonna throw it deep enough to expose the secondary?
Well, I’d say my concern here is who’s gonna cover opposing tight ends and running backs in these sorts of situations. Having Bradley back and Sims will help some, but really this is a spot where they got burned badly last year; it wasn’t just the defensive backs that got burned here.
Well we do have some nice 2nd picks coming up. We can still score a decent sized CB, Chris Cook for instance. I am really loving what the FO is doing to sure up our defense.
Chris Cook was taken last night.
The Eagles WILL redeem themselves in the '10-'11 season, with a win at SuperBowl 45 in Dallas!
Actually. . .
Greg is Howard’s nephew. Howard and his wife had two daughters, no sons.

I agree the guy is a great player
and If you look at my post from yesterday, i never said anything bad about his playing ability. Bt I will admit that I may have over-reacted to the selection. Looking at the line, with a better/health lb’s, we can dominate the front 7 easy. Now, with the way the draft went yesterday, there is a really good OT thats sitting there for us at 37 (the guy from Maryland) if we can get him, and Burnett at 55 (Alen if he falls), then we may come out of this draft real winners.

Few thoughts
- People excuse this team of not being ‘bold’ – This was this boldest move in the 1st round since they traded out of the 1st round and drafted Kolb. Passed on Morgan and some guys who definitely could have helped this questionable secondary. Also gave up those 3s on a team that is pretty short on depth and still needs help a several positions yet.
- Even earlier this decade when the defense was a really good unit they never really had 2 DE who were efffective against the run and pass rushing. Whiting was a solid, underrated guy but he wasn’t a legitimate push rusher.
I say you have to go to ‘96 when they had Fuller/Mamula. Mamula always get brought up as a draft day bust and that just generally isn’t true. Yeah he wasn’t a great player in the NFL but he was a good player who was largely undone by injuries. If you want a DE bust, just go no further than Jonathan Harris who was one of the worst busts in NFL history.
- This was definitely a high-risk, high-reward pick because the washout rate on DEs is pretty high. It is also a position where a guy gets a fair amount of attention and notoriety. If Graham struggles next year or if Morgan out plays, he will hear about it in a big way even though you really won’t able to tell if this was a good pick for probably 3 years.
- Maybe I am wrong but I would be pretty surprised if Graham comes in next year and wins defensive rookie of the year and has double digits in sacks. My bet is that he is a solid-enough player who gets out to a somewhat slow start but progresses as the year goes on.
- Eagles legitimately have the best send of DEs they have had in quite a long time. Tapp & Parker can be situational guys and be can used more appropriately.
To predict any guy to get double digit sacks win rookie of the year is always going to be a stretch… I totally agree that that can’t be the standard.
Definitely possible though
Voters love sacks, and across from the Cole-train, Graham could get quite a few of them. Usually an LB is a lock to win DROY, but there’s a weak class this year. Haden might not start, Berry is a possibility. Wishful thinking, but possible.

Agreed that can’t be the standard but it is still the mertric on what DEs are judged right or wrongly. Sexy stat. It is kind of foolish though. If Graham gets 8-9 sacks, he has a very strong chance of winning the defensive rookie of the year. I would be surprised though by a total that high.
If he starts 16 games, I would say more along the lines of 5-6 sacks.
Don’t forget….hurries = INTs when you have a ball hawk like Asante on your team…..remember this you Stats Guys….which is why we now need a Nate Allen type cover Safety…… Pressure = turnovers !!!!
KOLB is a natural born leader - something the Eagles haven't had on offense in a long long time. Prediction, we win a SB in the next 3 years.
not this one
people say how he has trouble in coverage, but we have arguably the best DB coach in the league in Dick Jauron so it doesnt bother me that much, he will learn.
When your as athletic as Mays is the potential is tremendous and worth it
To me the Eagles are like that girlfriend that pisses u off, then u hate her, but the next morning you wake up and remember that thing u love so much about her

I like him.
He tackles. He’s a bruiser. Maybe he’ll be able to clean up Asante’s missed tackles.

To beat Dallas
We need to be able to get to Romo and tackle in the secondary.
