Philadelphia Eagles trade up for Michigan DE Brandon Graham

The Eagles moved up 12 spots to #12 to select DE Brandon Graham from Michigan. The Eagles reportedly gave up their first and two thirds for the #12 pick.

Here is the Mocking the Draft scouting report on Graham.

Brandon Graham
6'1, 263 pounds | Defensive end | Michigan

Pass Rush/Closing ability/Moves and counter moves: Graham is a physical pass rusher who never quits. Frequently gets pressure, even when facing chip blocking. Gets very low to the ground, but maintains good balance coming around the edge. Benefited some at Michigan because he was allowed to line up wide and beat slower tackles. Has a very good inside counter move.

Pursuit/Lateral movement and agility: Excels pursuing the ball carrier. As a junior, he chased down Michigan State running back Javon Ringer. Plays with a lot of effort. Moves fairly well laterally, but his hips are stiff when going left to right. A bit more a straight-foward player.

Quickness/Explosion: Fires off the snap with a lot of passion. Is an excellent effort player. Powerfully punches into linemen to get off the block. Very good short-area quickness.

Run defend: Shows excellent awareness against the run. Quickly recognizes counters that come his way. Gets off his block and outside with ease. Breaks down in space nicely, which indicates he could hold up in a 3-4.

Size/Length/Hand size: Doesn't have the size evaluators look for in a defensive end. Height is only average. Has short arms -- measured at 30 inches at the Senior Bowl. Build is good and ready for the NFL.

Strength/Ability to shed blocks: Has a powerful build and is strong throughout his frame. Knows his to use his low center of gravity to get leverage. Probably won't need to add more bulk.

Tackling: More a strength tackler than a form tackler. Does a nice job keeping his shoulders square to the line when tackling. Explodes through the ball carrier. Doesn't really ever try to strip the ball.

Technique/Hand use/Leverage: Graham always plays low to the ground, which helps him get under blockers at the point. Uses his hands to disengage fairly well. However, Graham doesn't have the kind of hand punch you'd expect. Will let athletic offensive tackles get into his frame.

Versatility: Because of his size, a lot of people think Graham is a 3-4 outside linebacker or another LaMarr Woodley. However, he doesn't have Woodley's agility or lateral movement. Played some tackle in obvious pass-rush situations.

Now that I've had time to digest

He’s a damn good Defensive End. There are going to be a lot of unhappy offensive lines and unhappy QBs with Cole and Graham.

A great pass rush can cover for a mediocre defensive backfield.

And… not sure what you were watching IwantVick, they seemed to think it was a good pick from what I was watching.

You! Even though i know your pretty pissed off and scratching your head ( because i know you know football) Your still trying to keep spirits high. Iv’e been waiting for the draft since Dallas kick our ass and well….. THIS SUCKS, Its not the pick that bugs me, its who was available and even more dis-heartning what we gave to move up for a play THAT I THINK is not a starter in this league.

I'll admit..

I hated the pick at first, but after thinking about it, it seems like it makes sense. I’m ready fo Graham to step up and show us he’s worth trading up eleven spots for. And bdawk4ever, yes, better pass rush makes up for a weaker secondary. I’m ready for the second round!

He played OLB in a 3-4 in college. Most scouts I think cast him as a 4-3 DE in the pros.

Wow

First of all Michigan is 4-3. Second he plays de I don’t know where you got olb. People think e can play olb in a 3-4. He plays de in a 4-3. Brandon Graham is very good I don’t understand all the hate. Sure maybe he isn’t Thomas but Graham is a definite upgrade over a very lackluster dline save for Cole.

but u have 2 admit Jason they really botched this pick. Great way 2 get started Howie. This guy woulda been around at 20 and we coulda got him and kept one of our other 3rds. PT is a BUST written all over!

he is unpolished and drafted on pure raw talent. Graham is more herald and a better immediate starter

by JasonB on Apr 22, 2010 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s because he was playing for a bunch of idiot coaches. He was 4th in the NFL in QB hits last year and he played against left tackles. He would have played against right tackles here in Philly and do much better. Better coaches and Trent Cole on the other side on top of that.

We didn’t get good value here.

Good value in what sense? Graham was projected to go around where he did. The trade value in terms of picks is pretty even up.

by JasonB on Apr 22, 2010 9:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Graham was projected to go in the 19-24 range by most mocks I read.

Value meaning that we gave up two third rounders for a defensive end that I don’t think will be a vast improvement over Tapp. I think Tapp would have been an 8-10 sacks full time starter at LDE. He is also one of the BEST against the run. Just look at his numbers.

Bulaga just went at 23 and Kyle Wilson is still available at 24. That’s good value.

All I've ever heard is trust the FO and Andy in the draft..

First of all….we all need to stop attacking each other. Secondly, I believe we all agree this was a “suspect” pick since we traded for Tapp. Why trade for a DE then move UP to draft another DE!?! JPP to the Giants is hit or miss so I really don’t care at all. I do care about a premier S or CB and that should’ve been our first pick; AND I was the main one that said we should do whatever to get Berry AND Morgan…everyone said I was wrong and trust the FO. From our own BGN mock draft - Talon Talent

I sadly have to agree with this pick. Between the failed Jamaal Anderson pick and the fact that Atlanta needs to seriously boost their pass rush, there is no better pick for them. Brandon Graham is an amazing all around player. This guy not only already has skills, but has the work ethic to get even better and the ability to increase his already stellar skill level. I have said a bunch of times, I think Brandon Graham will end up being one of the best DE’s ever to play this game. I know it is a huge leap of a statement since we haven’t seen him play one NFL snap, but barring injury this guy in 15 years will be on the NFL Networks top 10 DE of all time program, bank on it. I really wish we could somehow get him, even with the acquisition of Tapp, but alas it will most likely not be. This is the perfect pick for Atlanta, good job Sportswatcher.

A) the guy plays low. That is so important when rushing the passer or playing the run. It is why Trent Cole can use his size to his advantage. The lower you get, the more leverage you have.

B) This is a Jim Johnson Defense people! D end is a very important position. We got lucky with Cole, but we need another long term DE, and Graham was drafted to be that, not a back up.

C) Earl Thomas can’t tackle for shit.

No hes not proven. Has he played in the NFL? Im not saying hes not good . Elvis Dumervil was tendered at a 1st and a 3rd and would have cost less then graham. Im saying too much to move up that far. But what ever. It is what it is and im hoping hes as dominate as he was at the senior bowl.

Im just suprised with the Tapp trade and all that we would go DE and not take Earl Thomas.

But that’s kind of like saying you’d be surprised they signed Marlin Jackson and drafted a safety. Tapp is a nice player. He’ll improve our depth in the front 7, but he’s not special. Graham can be special.

Went from droping f-bombs, to whatever, to hmmm, to ok, to hell-ya

Our DL is set for the next 5 or so years.

That’s a pretty f-in good feeling.

Yeah he’s good for 5-8 sacks a season, has a knack for making a play when least expected also. lots of potential on that d line especially if graham and cole and tapp can flush the qb into running.

Mays is really fast

So his problem might just be discipline. That can be fixed with good coaching. If he can read the play, his speed will get him into position in time. If he can’t read plays, he probably never will be able to so don’t draft him.

Now that the dust has settled...

This was an excellent draft pick, and frankly if you disagree then your football knowledge is not up to par. Some of the knee jerk reactions I read on here are utterly ridiculous.

Was DE our absolute top priority? Not really. Did we just make our pass rush exponentially more threatening? Yes, we did.

This is what happens when people get brainwashed from the 24/7 ESPN machine that tells them over and over that we must take a safety in the first round or we fail. There was absolutely nothing wrong with going after a defensive end. Unexpected does not equal terrible.

Besides, we still have two second round picks left, and that’s plenty of ammo to go gunning for a safety or cornerback.

Demarcus Ware? Dwight Freeney? Who is he like?

by The Fish on Apr 22, 2010 11:49 PM EDT reply actions

trent cole, dwight freeney, james harrison

best DE in the Draft, team leader and passionate hard effort not to mention very strong and explosive. Best DE in this draft for our scheme. My second choice for a player to trade up for after Berry…I’m so pumped… have to go make a fanpost I think.

My "t" and "y" buttons are messed up so don't bitch at me about misspelling, I'm just saying.

I immediately thought he looked like Dwight Freeney as soon as I saw some footage. A second after I said that to my friends, the NFL Draft crew brought up the same comparisons.

Andy Reid compared him to Hugh Douglas during his press conference too.

Do Philly football fans know what they got?

I guess that it is true. Opinions are like “A” holes and it seems like a lot of so called football fans on here have some strange opinions. I have only calmed down since reading some of the expert opinion’s form sports writers from the area. How do you call a guy a bust that has never played a down in the NFL or that you have never seen any film on. I have followed this kid form his playing days at Detroit Crocket Tech through his playing days at U of M and now on to the NFL. Everywhere he has gone; he has been a player and winner. In high school he played O line, D Line, DE, Line backer, punted, kicked extra points and was a team captain. Brandon was a HS all american and played in the U.S. Army all American Bowl and was selected a team captain. His record at U of M repeats itself; Team captain, MVP, record setter, record holder, award winner and team player. If you want to see film of Graham and look up sats you just have to look online, YouTube, google him or better yet take a look at last years senior bowl which by the way Brandon was voted MVP. More importantly is that the fans of Philly are getting a good guy, a nice guy, a personable guy. No one knows rather a draft pick will become a super star; an average player or even make the league. However, I can guarantee that Brandon Graham will give you 110 percent effort and play with the heart of a lion. Thank God he did not get drafted by the lions. Lol That’s my opinion. It is a biased opinion because he is family and I have fed him and watched him grow into the person he is. Lets give him a chance.

Are you mama or poppa Graham? If so, you know more about this kid than anyone else on here and I will take your word for it. Regardless, I’m pretty pumped about this pick. I’m thinking if we take at least one S or CB in the second round and then proceed to fill in for depth afterwards that I will be even more psyched about this draft. Lookin good so far…

by Scotty Laf on Apr 23, 2010 8:09 AM EDT up reply actions

At first I was pissed

Only because I really really really wanted Earl Thomas/Eric Berry. Like I didnt even notice the name, just saw it wasn’t them and thought FUCK.

Then started doing some research online, and really began to turn around. While he may not have the height or some other things people look for, if he has all those intangibles, he makes an extremely valuable asset to the defense. especially for a defense lacking that one person people fear (i maybe wrong because of Asante, but I dunno if people fear him as much as they do as say..Revis.) The Steelers got Polamahu, the Cowboys got Ware, so I’m definitely hoping we can say the Eagles got Graham. Not to mention, with the JJ-influenced Sean McDermott at the helm, I’m definitely excited to see him in some awesome blitz schemes.

Basically, upon further reflection and reevaluation, I love this pick. NewEgalesfan, if what you say is on the mark, then our defense just got alot better.
