Draft-day curveballs
Now that the day is finally upon us, it's hard not to be excited. Whether you view it as five picks on the first two days or seven of the top 121 (under normal circumstances, a team should get four players in the top 128 or so), the Eagles have a chance to bolster the foundation of the organization, particularly defensive, for years to come, and match the youthful offensive core we've assembled. The potential for the next several years is really limitless, and it all begins with what happens these next two days.
For all the names we've seen bandied about -- mostly secondary players at this point -- at the various points in the draft, the only thing we really know is that the Eagles will do something. To help kill time until we get underway, I was wondering if there's anything you've seen hardly mentioned or not mentioned at all that you think the Eagles could do. Doesn't matter if there's a 1% chance (just no more Roethlisberger ideas, please) ... I'm thinking along the lines of Maclin coming to us out of nowhere last year. Or the year we went Lito/Sheldon/Michael Lewis when we already had a strong secondary. I'm feeling something like that coming on, something nobody sees coming.
If it were something everyone sees coming, like us trading up for Berry, I could deal with that. Because of the depth in this draft, I don't think it's going to take as much to get up high as people think. I'd be fine with us holding our picks and adding five players by Friday night, but I really see Roseman trying to put his stamp on things and take advantage of all the ammo we have. We're gonna be all over the place, and we won't be able to judge after tonight. (At least the festivities start back up at 6 on Friday).
I don't have anything great I want to predict. I could see us in the top 5 or not picking at all tonight. I could see us not picking in any of our original spots on Thursday or Friday. Addressing a position where we seem set. Anybody got any off-the-wall, didn't-see-THAT-coming moves they wanna discuss?

I’m about 98% sure we’ve beaten every possible angle to death. I think someone even suggested we trade for Roethlisberger yesterday, haha.
I’m actually really starting to not like “draft season,” because it’s totally making me unproductive at work. At this point, I’m kind of ready for it to just be over. I got married last year, and it reminds me a little of that. With all the preparation that goes into it… and once the party finally gets going it’ll be over (snapping finger) like that.
yeah..
But we BGN’ers have to live somewhere during the offseason! Why not at a plce with 2389 different mock drafts, everything covered and recovered three times, all leading up to the draft? Think about it.. After the draft, the season’s not too far off. I’m excited as hell this year, I believe it’ll be my MOST indepth season, knowledge wise. Everyone here brings up pretty intelligent points and opinions (I won’t name who doesn’t) and I love the community here though.
I’m about 98% sure we’ve beaten every possible angle to death.
And I’m 100%.
The Eagles WILL redeem themselves in the '10-'11 season, with a win at SuperBowl 45 in Dallas!
I guess that was sort of my inspiration ...
… I’ve got a good grasp on the trade up for Eric Berry scenarios. I was hoping someone would hip me to something I hadn’t thought of or read yet.
I guess that is a tall order.

Dez Bryant
i have a feeling that he will slip to #24. If he is available and is considered the highest rated player on the board, do the birds take him? I dont want this at all but isnt it the front offices’ logic to take the highest rated player on the board regardless of need????
I don't think they would
They would just trade down a spot or two and collect an extra 6th rounder.
by Team Serbia on Apr 22, 2010 10:24 AM EDT up reply actions
I would
yes i know we dont NEED a wr!!!! But if I had to pick between drafting a guy who will start for the next 12 years at a position of need and a guy who would be one of the best at his position for the next 12 years at a position we are stacked at…I choose the guy who is the best at his position for the next 12 years.
"Buy low sell high!"
Yeah, I’d actually be quite excited if Dez Bryant fell to us. Having three top WRs and a fourth that’s very solid would be pretty fearsome to other teams. Teams that have had that kind of thing in the last 15 years have has some pretty memorable offenses. Rams, Cinci (sadly it didn’t last for long), Arizona. And I think the three we’re talking about being in Phili could be a better three than some of those teams I mentioned!
At the very least, it’d be damn fun to watch the Eagles play.
Want a possible scenario? We trade up a bit using picks 24 and 55 to grab Earl Thomas. We use 37 to take Ghee from Wake Forest. Pick 70 is an OT, maybe Veldheer. Pick 87 is another corner, maybe Akwasi Owusu-Ansah. We package some picks, move back into the third and take Myron Rolle to convert to SS.
We get our new FS in Thomas, probably someone that’ll beat Hobbs and Hanson out in Ghee, and OL depth we need. AOA replaces Jackson returning punts so he doesn’t get killed, and possibly could be Samuel’s replacement in two years… Q is 30… you know what that means in our eyes. Obviously if we were happy with our safety situation, we wouldn’t have brought Marlin Jackson in to begin with. I think Demps is lucky if he makes it through camp, and they can’t just assume Harris will work out as a conversion…
That’s my crazy curve ball scenario. We’ve shown that we’ll load up on secondary before…
"I tried to run him over but Eli had his big boy pads on and he kind of stopped me from getting in the end zone. The next time I’ll try to jump over his head.’’ - Asante Samuel
That's an interesting one ...
… Lawlor mentioned Ghee too.
Demps is on my “Winston Justice watch list.” Dude needs to ball this year to save his career, you’re right.
Good thought on Mikell’s replacement, although as you mention, people think Macho will take over there at some point.
Good thought on getting Djax out of there too. I see a Westbrook role for him … you don’t want him taking a lot of PR punishment, but when we need a huge return, we might throw him back there.
Don’t a lot of the top corners also come with PR/KOR skills?
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
Well, it seems like alot of corners handled return duties in college… Now weather that means they can do it at the NFL level is a bit different. AOA is just explosive. Like WRs do returns alot in college. Case and point, Maclin was a very good returner in college… He looked like hell when he had his chance last year…
"I tried to run him over but Eli had his big boy pads on and he kind of stopped me from getting in the end zone. The next time I’ll try to jump over his head.’’ - Asante Samuel
Yeah I saw he mentioned Ghee. Personally, if we don’t move up, I think we take Kareem Jackson at 24. If we move up, Ghee will be the most NFL ready corner there at 37.
"I tried to run him over but Eli had his big boy pads on and he kind of stopped me from getting in the end zone. The next time I’ll try to jump over his head.’’ - Asante Samuel
Oh… sorry for the triple post, but to further back up my position on drafting two safeties within the first three rounds is that Q’s contract is up after this year…

Haha, the “Winston Justice watch list.” Love it.
Guys on that list – Demps (as you noted), King Dunlap, Mike McGlynn, Joe Mays, and Trevor Laws is almost there.
Hmmm I’m willing to give Mays a pass for one more year. The other fuckers are tits on a bull as far as I’m concerned…

My official Winston Justice watch list
is Abiamiri, Demps, Laws, McGlynn.
I don’t think Dunlap’s gonna make it. Mays is a baller, but it’s not looking good for him either.
There was a thread about this somewhere.

agreed. we already have 10 picks so i dont think that trimming the roster to get more picks is necessary. w/o trading sheldon, then this idea could have some legs….but with where we are now, i just dont see it.

Colt McCoy is so perfect for our system...
that if he slips to #55 I bet we grab him. He’s got all the things Eagles want in a QB — leadership, 4 year starter in college, extremely accurate, loves the game, used to rabid fanbase… I doubt he falls, but if he does slip past the first 10 or so 2nd rounders I wouldn’t be surprised to see us trade up for him and let him develop/compete with Kolb to have another good problem on our hands in 2 – 3 years. After all, Kolb’ll be 29 in 3 years.
I’ve talked myself into thinking we’ll take him with #37. Hah!
No way
If Kolb pans out, he’’ll be the starter for the next 5 years, at minimum. We have more pressing needs then a backup QB in the 2nd round.
by Team Serbia on Apr 22, 2010 10:45 AM EDT up reply actions
that said,
It wouldn’t surprise me to see Andy select a backup in the second like McCoy. Just to groom him and auction him off 2 years later for a first rounder.

McCoy sucks.
This 2010 equivalent of Brian Brohm isn’t worth even a 5th rounder. If we draft him, it will ruin my weekend even if we get Berry.

If we get Berry
I’m not gonna stress about the rest of the picks, I’m really not. My mind says we need to get multiple future starters, with as many picks as we have, but if we get Berry … I will be pleased as a pig in shhh … er, a blanket.

I see a DB heavy draft because of Dick Jouron. He is a great secondary coach, he has a three year contract but he will probably be here only a year. Someone will want him for their defensive coordinator next season.
So only having him for one season, maybe two at the most, he has to be used effectively. I would be shocked if we came away from this draft with any less than 3 DBs.
If he signed a 3 year contract...
He has to stay here 3 years unless the Eagles fire him. Bigger opportunity or not.

Whats the QB prediction? We sign a Vet or are we going to try to pick someone up in the later rounds?
The only way i see Vick being traded out is if we pick up a vet AND pick up a young guy. Otherwise, Vick’s with us another year.

Good question
On one hand, it seems like we need Vick as the backup and we could use him more as Kolb didn’t seem to mind as much (although maybe before he was the starter, he couldn’t complain).
But if there’s someone on the board in the fourth they love and they can deal Vick for that pick, I bet he’s gone.
Keep in mind we have Garcia in the pocket, so unless we draft someone high and don’t trade Vick … basically they can do whatever at QB.
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
agreed….and thats actually one of the sides of this draft that i am really intrigued by. Our entire QB situation has been shaken up with McNabb being gone, and having a backup become a starter. I’m just really curious to see what they do with the remainder of the situation that those moves created.

With all the trades that happened between today and a few weeks ago, Vick value has plummeted. There’s been a rash of decent to good players who went for a mere 5th round pick. Would the Eagles take that for him still? IDK. But if we could get a decent vet (maybe a CB) in return, I could see the Eagles going for it.
I am the people's troll :3™
Anyone else besides me starting to get the feeling...
That Kyle Wilson will be the first CB selected? He’s been rising fast since the Senior Bowl, and I think it’s entirely possibly for him to be the first CB taken.
I think he's better than Haden
So I could see that.

You can redeem yourself with a :BREAKING: around 8:30 that announces the Eagles have given up the 24, 55 and 101 to move up to the 5 spot and select Berry.
Over on Arrowhead Pride, they think the 24 and 37 is not enough. Pssssssht. The 37 isn’t even in play. That’s our other DB.

I love draft picks for proven vets. I wish-listed this one back in January, I think.
Teams reportedly interested in Umenyiora at the right price: St. Louis, Denver, San Diego and Philadelphia. But would the Giants trade him within the division?
Unlikely. But it would fit the category of curveball.
He’s 29, fwiw.
These third and fourth rounders are gonna be great for trading when someone in love with a player on the board comes up. Friday should be wild.
