Eagles trade Sheldon Brown & Chris Gocong to Cleveland

The trade sending Sheldon Brown & Chris Gocong to the Cleveland Browns is official. The Eagles will reportedly receive the Browns' 4th & 5th round picks in 2010 plus LB Alex Hall. The picks received are #105 and #137 overall.

Sheldon Brown, 31, will reportedly receive a new contract as part of the deal.

SAM LB Alex Hall was a 7th round pick of the Browns in 2008 and has started two games for the team. He's 6'5, 250 lbs and is 24 years old.

Reid and Roseman had this to say...

"Sheldon Brown has been a very good football player for the Eagles over the last eight years,"" said head coach Andy Reid. ""He's a good person, a legitimate tough guy and he'll do a good job helping the Browns. Chris did a good job converting from defensive end to linebacker and helped us win a lot of football games. We wish both of them all of the best."

Added general manager Howie Roseman, "Sheldon and Chris have been nothing but professionals on and off the field during their tenure in Philadelphia and we wish them all the best as they continue their careers in Cleveland. Alex Hall is a big, athletic linebacker who we've had our eyes on over the last couple of years and he'll have a chance to compete at the SAM linebacker spot."

a third round pick would of been good, he’s as good as cromartie, just because cromartie led the league in picks doesn’t make him a superstar. his skills elsewhere are poor.

by ryanitus on Apr 2, 2010 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s older and his contract is getting renewed… plenty of things to drop his value when comparing to ACs 3rd round price.

by Sparki on Apr 2, 2010 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Market Value and Fair Compensation, in this case, are disparate disparate

Brown meant more to this team than Cromartie did to his.

Also, Brown meant more to this team than a 4th and 5th round selection likely will.

We just shouldn’t have made the trade at all

That’s a fair point. If you want to talk about BRown’s value here then I think that’s fair.

I’m just saying that this deal is fair market value for Brown. But as you said, it may not be worth more to the team than keeping Brown.

by JasonB on Apr 2, 2010 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed on that point. A 4th and 5th is prolly all we could ever hope to get for a 31 year old with no pro bowls and no name recognition

The Chargers are my second favorite NFL team, and the feeling over at Bolts from the Blue after the AC trade was basically good riddance. Cromartie is awesomely athletic, but he gambles a lot, doesn’t tackle and gets faked out of his shoes frequently.

Admittedly, Sheldon is a finished product who is more likely to get worse, as opposed to better, while AC is young and has a very high ceiling. But Sheldon is going to be a reliable corner who won’t get burned often, while AC is a total boom or bust guy.

Not only does Roseman deserve scrutiny, but he and that talentless asswipe capologist need to get the hell out of town. How do you let Tom fucking Heckert do this to you?

I get your Cromartie point that you made above, but I think that they could have swung a better trade for Sheldon. He's a young prospect at SAM

Not much NFL playing time to analyze, but I’m getting the sense that the trade was more for the picks anyway. The Eagles have stockpiled ten so far and are now in a good position to make a few more deals.

by Bob_Q on Apr 2, 2010 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions

He will still need a lot of work to play SAM. Hall was a 7th round pick for the browns. He was out of a D-2 school, St. Augustine. He was a DE that we were converting to 3-4 OLB. So far the first 2 seasons, he has been primarily a special teams player. HE has been very good on special teams but still isn’t polished in some other areas. He is still very raw but has some very good upside. Outside of Special teams, he has only been a one down player. He can rush the passer well and has good speed, but will still need a lot of work to play the SAM position. He still needs to improve his tackling ability. however, he is a rangy player and still has room to fill out his frame (he is 6’5 250) and is still very lean.

I believe though, with a good coaching staff, he could be a solid player. He was 190 pounds when he walked onto campus at the age of 18. He left at 238 and a more polished player. He is up to 250 now and has room to go.

F#ck Heckert

He needs leadership on team that has had 0 in the last 3-4 years. By the time they figure out which way is up, Brown will be long gone.

There was probably not much of a market for an aging CB, who needed to be resigned to a fairly large deal. So, we either play the McNabb game with him, or get what we can and try to make him happy. People were bitching about what we got for Lito too. Now, that ain’t looking too bad.

by JasonB on Apr 2, 2010 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I as a browns fan disagree. Hall was one of those guys who had a lot of question marks as a player coming out. he was undersized, and came from a small, D-2 school. However, our GM had a private workout for him and liked what he saw. the guy has skills. He showed some his first year. However, he fell behind in the depth chart last year. He did improve his tackling and ST play last year though. He could make the ruster purely based on ST play and potential.

maybe by height…

He is 6’5 but is only 245-250 pounds. He is very lean, but doesn’t have a ton of bulk.

He was also undersized when he was drafted. He was a 6’5 player who was mid 230 pounds as a DE. he still is undersized for a DE/OLB pass rusher. He is solid size for a SAM linebacker, but He still needs some work to play the position. However, he has some talent and has a lot of potential.

I agree with that. He has good size for a LB. Still, He is nowhere near as bulky as your DEs. He might be 250 pounds, but he is also 6’5 and lean. He has a body more like a linebacker than a DE. Still, he has good size for a LB.

I wouldn’t consider pick 105 and 137 the ammo we need. I actually think trading sheldon on draft day would be more useful to move up into the top ten. And at this point, our entire secondary is decrepit (minus asante) so I don’t know how one guy we draft is going to offset our major lack of pass defense.

by eagleyosh on Apr 2, 2010 12:25 PM EDT up reply actions

you give them our 1st this year for the 4Th and their 1st

teams that are rebuilding want picks so maybe you throw in more later round picks.

i am not saying that i think it is a good deal- but the only way you give up arguably your strongest starting player at the thin position is if you have a target on someones back in the draft. the only thing i really do not understand is the only person i can think of is eric berry- and we already have 999999999 safeties

i say that because we need OG/C not OT so your not going to move up in the first round for an OG/C. We just signed a DE so i doubt you move up to draft a de (esp because there are no studs) we do not need DT or OT ( by that i mean in the high first round) we do not value the LB position like that. Finally we historically also do not value the safety position like that.
Finally Finally i just cannot imagine getting rid of a good corner to move up to draft a new corner…

im confused

by Whodie126 on Apr 2, 2010 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I look at it this way, Sheldon did play well for the most part last yr but his play is starting to decline and he is an aging CB who wanted a new contract and the eagles did not want to give him one. Im just guessing here but he was probably going to hold out until he got a new contract, so rather than putting up with that they traded him and let the Browns work out a new deal. Obviously converting Gocong to a SAM LB wasn’t working out and why Fokou was starting at the end of last yr. There were probably very few teams interested in either player so rather than having Gocong waste a roster spot or just get realeased they figured they would trade him.

by mgrisez on Apr 2, 2010 12:26 PM EDT reply actions

If u look at it

Its basically trading a crappy LB for a crapy LB and the 4th and 5th picks for Sheldon

Sheldon > 4th and 5th.

I would’ve been happy with a 3rd and 5th for Sheldon. Or maybe a 3rd alone. But a 4th and 5th is not good enough to me.

And I’d feel much more comfortable with Gocong (who has started 20+ games and knows our schedme) over Hall.

I don't like this

Why would we trade Brown? He’s been a great player for us for years now and off the field was an outstanding vet. He wanted the new contract badly but he handled that situation so well, coming to workouts and not holding out, he was a great example to our young stars who are going to want their own new contracts soon. And it’s not like we have anything close to his talent waiting for a shot to play. There better be something else in the works because I really don’t see how the team is improved unless whomever they draft with those picks turns out to be a sold starting corner.

I consider rebuilding when you get rid of most of your older veteran players and re-start with young and inexperienced players, regardless of an 11-5 record last year. Remember, 1-4 against over .500 teams. And that one win was against a Falcons team without two of their best players, and they themselves went 1-5 against over .500 teams.

Well, even though we will have a young team after all is said and done, it isn’t like they are totally inexperienced.

3rd?!?!?!?!

Gocong would barely be worth a 5th. He doesn’t do anything especially well to merit that. Most people think Brown is worth about a 3rd and he and Gocong are no where close to each other in terms of talent. It is completely natural for people to over value the players on their favorite team though, most people think we should get a 1st for McNabb whereas we’re much more likely to get a 3rd or maybe, maybe a 2nd given the value of his contract, years on the contract and his age.

McNabb's value just went down...

If I am the GM of another NFL team who needs a QB… I analyze the moves the Eagles have made and see that they’re obviously rebuilding/retooling/getting younger.

There’s no way I can wrap my head around a scenario where the Eagles keep McNabb. So because it’s obvious they’re going to trade him, I offer the Eagles less than I would if there was a chance they’d keep him.

This McNabb trade is not looking good from the outside looking in.

Not necessarily.

I think what kind of bit us in the butt is the fact that we couldn’t make a move faster. The longer we wait, the less the value.

Gocong is a guy who didn’t fit for us, and from my reading, this oher guy didn’t work for them. Tbh its borderline fair-to-favorable for the browns. Gocong does have starting experience over this other doofus, but all things considered, its a crapshoot.

Would’ve preferred to see a pair of 4s for shelden, but I wonder… outside of us and the browns, who else can see anything but a hurt declining cb? The market was dry, and I’m not losing sleep over the deal, or hobbs starting.

I agree with them JasonB you are very good. but just a question, wouldn’t you say that cromartie is not as complete of a cb as brown yet they got a 3rd for him and we got next to nothing. Unless one of those picks turns into the next coming of darren sproles this is a lost trade right now. Like the raiders giving away Moss for a measily 4th round pick then watching him rip off 23 tds.

by ryanitus on Apr 2, 2010 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions

You say “next to nothing” when in fact they got a 4th round pick in the package. One round below the compensation for Cromartie.

Point is, Cromartie is 25. He’s been a pro bowl player. He’s led the league in picks. He was a first round pick and he’s great size/speed. There’s no way you can say his value is less or equal to Sheldon Brown at this point in his career. I say that as a huge fan of Sheldon Brown.

He’s no where near as good a tackler as Sheldon, but he’s probably better at everything else and will be for the next 5 years. Again, that’s the important point here. The youth.

by JasonB on Apr 2, 2010 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Im a huge fan of Sheldon too, I thought he was very classy compared to most who want more money and a new contract. But I guess what Im saying is do you think the picks they received for Sheldon will ever do for philly what sheldon did?

by ryanitus on Apr 2, 2010 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s not about doing what Sheldon did. If the picks do what Sheldon would’ve done over the course of the next few seasons, then it’s worth it. I’m not sure it’s a good trade still, but it’s hard to believe Sheldon would return to the form he showed at the beginning of last season.

Time will tell...

I’ll reserve any sort of judgment on this trade until I see what we get out of those picks and if Sheldon has a solid year (including holding up to injury) with the Browns.

I have this feeling that the FO wasn’t too confident in Sheldon heading into this year, whether it’s injury concerns or just age in general, given the fact that he was traded at all. His base salary was manageable and I don’t think he would have been a problem child during camp, so the only logical reason I could see in trading him for the compensation they received is they feel he is on the decline, or won’t be able to hold up for the whole season.

matt ryan had michael turner killing it that year and the ravens had a stout running game and one of the games best defenses. i can’t see andy reids team being a top-5 rushing team, like, ever and our defense looks to be on the rebuild. i’m not anti-kolb, i just don’t think that he will have the support system that those other two guys benefitted from. Especially flacco..dude has one of the best rushing attacks AND one of the best defenses in the league. that first year, he only had to attempt about 12 passes a game

i really believe that this points directly at McNabb being moved very soon. I also think that it shows that the actual value vs. the value that we put on our favorite players, is not going to be synonymous. My guess is that McNabb is traded in the coming week or so, and there will be a firestorm on here because it wont yield us what we think it should.

I see what you are saying

But dumping our best corner to me at this time makes no sense…we have larger issues to address, and now we just added to the list…yeah our offensive weapons are top notch, but we have huge concerns on D that we have yet to address, and now this is something else to fix…i see the only redemption for this in a Nnamdi Asomugha for DNabb trade….however, if they are wrong about Kolb, were fcked.

by Eaglesfan83 on Apr 2, 2010 2:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Well this is depressing.

Unless we get Nnamdi, I’m not sure how well this will work out. Even if we get Berry the trio of Jackson/Hobbs/Hanson doesn’t inspire me opposite Samuel. Jackson probably gets that nod right? Oy vey. A top tier corner would be nice and maybe that’s the move, but god forgive us if we whiff on the pick. I rarely doubt this FO and Reid anymore with personnel decisions, but there better something big waiting because this… this isn’t going to cut it for a secondary.

I will say I’m not surprised we traded Brown, but I thought he’d be a draft day trade, not a 4th and 5th….

Dump current LBs, pick up garbage and nothing else

Dump shithead (but once great) O Lineman, get nothing

I would be willing to bet that out of all of our 10 draft picks, we get 3 that stay in the league more than 3 years, maybe one outstanding Pro Bowler

Are all these trades for picks worth it? the draft this year is “deep”—but is there really such a huge dispartity between this year and others??? do we get magic beans too? since when has a draft pick meant guarenteed success? Mike Mamula anyone?

I'm a little nervous about this set up

Reid made a young roster at the beginning of his tenure and has continually brought in young talent to keep this team competitive. We have never lost so much leadership, can Cole and Bradley Djax and Celek really make up for this? I dont know but the eagles are trying to prevent the eagles from hitting that wall that crushed the Bucs and Rams after there dominant eras when their players aged and they fell to the nfl floor. I’m holding my breath until after this draft.

Our d-line should be fine. Our linebackers will be fine if they play like they did in 08. If they don’t, we might be boned. The secondary is obviously the biggest question.

If Marlin Jackson plays well, he could cover up a little bit for the loss of Sheldon. I don’t think we’re necessarily going to be terrible next year, but there’s nothing inspiring confidence, either.

Our starting center is Nick Cole or Mike McGlynn until further notice. Our starting guard is expected to be Stacy Andrews.

I don’t think it’s that far of a stretch to think that Nick Cole and Stacy Andrews will play at (the very least) acceptably next year.

we'll just have to wait

to see what happens in the draft and the results of the picks/trades they are used in.. although we would have all liked a higher pick, we should all know that there can definitely be successful picks in the later rounds, as our roster now includes: Brent Celek, Trent Cole, Todd Herremans, Jason Avant, and MJG. Even last year people were excited about our later picks, even if they didn’t pan out for us yet (Brandon Gibson, Cornelius Ingram) and many people this year see Fokou as much improved.

Not just trade McNabb

And enter whatever the Eagles want to call it but it will be a ‘rebuilding year’ where they have Kolb at QB, a bunch of new starters on defense, and a season of 8-10 wins with a possible WC appearance.

by RossyJr22 on Apr 2, 2010 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

our offense is still potent if mcnabb is on the team. who knows what you have if kolb is given the job. everyone is hopeful, but truth is, you have a qb with 2 starts in 3 seasons, taking snaps from a guy who is at best, an adequete center. he then proceeds to either A) hand the ball off to a 2nd year player who we think could be pretty good. unfortuanately there is a former under-acheiver(who just got paid…kinda scares me), a big question mark, a top-shelf reserve, a pretty good left guard and a sometimes great sometimes horrible left tackle. oh and tight ends who can’t block. this is not that big a deal because it rarely happens anyway. the more common option is option B) the young qb is asked to throw us to victory. we have 3 really good receivers and a good tight end but again, can we stop the cowboys from killing kolb? how about any of the other top defenses. tough question huh? me, i’m not thrilled with half of the offensive line. it’ll be like last year, we can beat the bad teams but we’ll lose to the good ones…and we got a tough schedule. not trying to be a downer, that’s just how i see it

at least i’m on the same page as someone

by bula412 on Apr 2, 2010 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe

But besides Brown who did they really get rid of this offseason so far that was an important contributor? Maybe you can argue ’Spoon & Howard but that is a reach.

I will agree that they really haven’t done much to upgrade at any single position so far this offseason and a defense which struggled & was mediocre has largely lost even more pieces. Tapp might be a useful LDE but counting on Jackson seems like a real stretch and they still have issues at several positions on the defense-side of the ball.

by MG77 on Apr 2, 2010 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions

8-9 wins

Is nothing special either. That puts the Eagles right around the 12-15 best team in the league in wins.

by MG77 on Apr 2, 2010 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

The thing that scares me is

you can fill a team with talent (washinton redskins) and they can still suck! The team needs chemistry and while our offense will be okay our defense scares me.

by RossyJr22 on Apr 2, 2010 3:03 PM EDT reply actions

Exactly

I think experienced players are more necessary on D…they need to groom their replacements, not have new guys filling these holes…off-season—-offensive got better unnecessarily…and the d got way more question marks

by Eaglesfan83 on Apr 2, 2010 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

The Redskins aren’t filled with talent, though. They had a lot of talent on defense, and their defense was very good. Their offense sucked. They had some names like Portis and Chris Samuels, but those guys were way past their primes. Most of their other starters were either very young or mediocre. Also, the price they pay for all that big name, big money talent is that they have very little depth, so, when they have injuries (almost a guarantee in the NFL), the replacement players blow.

600 posts later….
Not even going to talk about Gogcong, but Sheldon, he was a warrior that barely missed a single game for us in the 8 or so years he was here. Is that commendable, yes, does it win a Super Bowl… no.

It’s Super Bowl 45 and we have yet to get our piece of the legacy. Trading Sheldon gives us a 4th and 5th pick, two opportunities to find a great player. Sheldon was ALWAYS the number 2 corner here, except when Asante or Lito were/are hurt, which is and was rather often. The fact that Brown was always there was awesome, just wish he was a little better player. Last year was his best “hands” year, but I don’t expect that trend to continue and I think this was a good trade. I completely expect the Birds to bring in somebody at corner. Logic would state they are freeing up money for a McNabb deal.
I’ll be rooting for ya Sheldon, unless you go up against my beloved green machine, then your &$%*ed.

Random thoughts going through my head

Maybe Holmgren (because he’s really in charge in Cleveland, not Mangini) thought Gocong could learn from playing on the same team as Scott Fujita? Or maybe he saw him and Hall as interchangeable?
Also, maybe the Browns wanted to have a solid corner to play until whatever guys they may draft can come into their own?

I hate to say it (or do i?)

But i guess I kinda told you so. Haha i’m joking but this is something that I completely expected and I am not disappointed with this trade. Brown wants more money. That is a big issue especially since he decided to publicly bitch about it last year. Who knows how far he would have taken it this year? I wouldn’t even be surprised if he personally told Andy that he wants a raise/trade or hes going to bitch again.

Brown is 31. He was injured plenty last year and had a very down season (for him). The injuries were nagging and who knows what effect they could have had on this season. Brown never had elite speed, so if his hamstring continues to get tweaked, then we would have seen him being burned many times this year (as he was last year). So you have a aging, disgruntled CB whose coming off a season plagued with nagging injuries and a decline in performance. Are you guys really surprised he was traded?

Now lets take a look at the value. Say what you want, but the Cromartie deal set the bar for compensation for a CB. He was traded for a 3rd and he was a probowl CB, who led the league in INT’s. He is also VERY YOUNG.

Brown didn’t make the Probowl (not initially anyways), is a lot older, and is coming off a declined season. A 4th and a 5th is plenty compensation for him, a very early 4th and 5th, which essentially is almost equal in value to a mid-late third.

Gocong for Alex Hall is fine. Gocong wasn’t good in our system, and we just added some depth to the LB’s, especially to the strong side where we don’t even have a clear starter yet.

Come on guys, we’ll be fine. We have plenty of questions to answer but I don’t think the FO stops here. No one should be expecting Hobbs to start next season. We’ll either pick someone up in the draft very early (Kyle Wilson?) or make a trade.

5-11

Welcome to the Kolb Era. The salary dump is in full swing and so is the rebuilding. Hopefully some of these later round draft picks will yield players who’ll be ready to contribute in a few years.

Right

Defense doesn’t matter.

INTs to the opposition don’t matter.

The only thing that matters is trading McNabb. Championship!

Or not.

how is getting rid of Gocong and Brown a salary dump they didn’t make anything. Sheldon would have made under 3 mil this year.

To keep Sheldon Brown and resolve his contract situation they would have had to pay him. Which they are obviously not prepared to do.

Couple of thoughts

1. Lots of people flipped out when the Eagles let Bobby Taylor back in ’03. Turned out the Eagles were pretty much dead on and Taylor was done after just 1 season in Seattle. Not saying that Brown will be done after 1 year. Eagles might just think Brown has maybe 1 year more as a starter at CB and got what they could.

2. You still have to see what the Eagles end up doing but Howie Roseman was trying to sell that Hobbs & Hanson (to a lesser degree) as ‘very capable’ replacements? Please. Hobbs was never that good of a CB in NE and is coming off a serious injury to boot. No idea how he will look until at least a few weeks in training camp. As for Hanson, no way he has the tools to start at CB in the NFL. This isn’t a young player in the fold in Sheppard/Brown how has been groomed to take over. This kind of stuff pisses off Eagles’ fans and I can understand why.

3. It is really hard to see how this move improves the team the Eagles will put on the field next year. Especially the one on defense. Even Banner/Roseman shouldn’t play that card.

4. This makes the McNabb deal almost inevitable now unless they get blown away for a deal for Kolb.

5. It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if the Eagles turn around to take some the picks they have acquired and pick up 1-2 players like Tapp (experienced veterans who are still on the younger side and can give the Eagles 3-4 years of contributions).

How can people be bad-mouthing Roseman?

He just got into a job and anybody who has remotely followed this team knows that Reid/Banner have more input on these moves than Roseman. Damn.

by MG77 on Apr 2, 2010 6:03 PM EDT reply actions

he annoys me because of his post-trade comments...

as you said, he is new. so, why in the world is he commenting on the level of professionalism that gocong and brown showed on and off the field? how would he know? it just goes to show that the front office is a group of of public relations enforcers who will happily lie through their teeth in an attempt to pleaae philly fans. not working.

by awd777 on Apr 2, 2010 6:10 PM EDT up reply actions

That kind of pisses me off a bit too but what else do you expect him to say? Any team would do pretty much the exact same thing and use the same generic PR lingo & terminology.

by MG77 on Apr 2, 2010 6:22 PM EDT up reply actions

How would he know?

Because he’s obviously been following football throughout his life. He didn’t get an interview and then look up in a dictionary what NFL stands for. And be sure the Eagles didn’t just randomly pick up a lawyer to be the GM. I wouldn’t be surprised if they had been talking to him for months, maybe years. Plus thats what he has to say. Its just the political schpeal every GM has to say when you trade a long term player.

Plus he obviously got input from Reid and Co. Are you really going to bash for saying that Brown was a professional? Wow.

by Team Serbia on Apr 2, 2010 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Brown

He played hard & hut here but yet again he was more than happy to leave because it meant he got paid. Money is the most important factor to players 95% of the time. Everything else is secondary.

Brown was the man. I feel that the addition of Asante hurt Brown, before he wanted to make stops, then it seemed he was in a competition with Asante for INTs. Needless to say, he wasn’t as good at it as Asante, and it hurt the best part of his game.

How many times did Brown get beat trying to get a INT? That shit never happened before.
His play this year will not be missed. Maybe if he wouldn’t have been sooo burned he would have stayed.

Also, is it me or are the Eagles not getting a good as a deal with all those really long term deals as they first thought? Think about it… Brown, R.Brown, Lito, TO, Andrews, they all didn’t seem as happy with those deals than at first. Patterson is the only one that seems to have worked out that I can think of.

by topcat6 on Apr 2, 2010 6:44 PM EDT reply actions

What?

Brown was the best contract ever. They paid him pennies for the caliber of player he was. Hanson paid more money then him!

by Team Serbia on Apr 2, 2010 6:57 PM EDT up reply actions

But he was pissed about it.

It was a good deal for the Eagles, your right.

I am talking more of the majority of those players were flops and not worth it.

by topcat6 on Apr 2, 2010 7:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Well Lito was an all-pro

and was very good for us for a few seasons. Can’t argue Reggie Brown. TO was also underpaid and it’s tough to predict something like his situation occurring. But I think he was worth a big contract in his prime. And same thing with Andrews (I assume Shawn). He was a stud when he was on the field, but tough to predict injuries and getting your phelps on.

by Team Serbia on Apr 2, 2010 8:02 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t feel like doing a % of successes with those long contracts, but I just was thinking maybe they didn’t get what they would have hoped for. Some players faded out, some busted, some busted themselves out. Overall, in my mind those young core player contracts that they were giving out in the middle of the decade weren’t as good as they might have first initially have thought.

Without going through everyone of their contracts and production.

Regardless of whether we got "fair value"...

Does this trade actually help us win this year? Seems pretty clear to me it doesnt, and I dont think the picks we got are going to generate overly great players both now and in the future.

I dont see the point in trading a pretty good but declining corner for 2 guys that will likely end up being backups in the NFL.

by philiafan14364 on Apr 2, 2010 7:19 PM EDT reply actions

It definitely doesn't help us win this year.

We’re just really going all out with the “getting younger” idea I guess.

Perfect timing on Brown trade

This draft is being called the deepest draft in a decade. Stock piling draft picks is essential. Ray Didinger was on DNL tonight and broke down Browns year and stated he was average at best. Browns 31, lost a step, wanted a new contract, was physically breaking down and beat like a drum down the stretch. What did you want a number 1 pick for him? lol Other teams look at the same film. Youth youth youth. Draft picks! When all is said and done the avg age of this team will be 25. Just need to draft well. Didinger said thats why they brought that draft guru in to help out this year.

Expect Big Trade for CB

There is no way the Eagles trade Brown without having a deal set for a starting CB. The Eagles always have a plan, It may not always work out, but there is always a plan, They are not going into the draft hoping to get there starting CB. This tells me McNabb is going to Oakland for the 2nd best CB in the NFL (Revis is #1), Asumugha from Oakland. Not sure if Samuels will be moved in this deal because Ive heard Samuels flat out refused to press cover and this infuriated McDermitt. So Samuels and McNabb to Oakland for Asumugha and 2nd or 3rd round pick.

by D-Nice on Apr 2, 2010 9:16 PM EDT reply actions

i heard is name was samuel.

by WillyC on Apr 2, 2010 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Samuel is not on the trade block

at all. Its been reported. Brown was the one on the trade block.

by Team Serbia on Apr 2, 2010 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions

- Asomugha is not coming here even if Eagles did trade McNabb to the Raiders. Why would the Eagles at this point take on an additional contract that is even more money than McNabb and only have that player for potentially one year (on a team that isn’t going to compete for a SB next year).

- Why would you trade Samuels (who is your best defensive player now besides Cole) for essentially a 3rd round pick when you have no young player ready to take over Brown’s spot let alone Samuel’s.

by MG77 on Apr 3, 2010 12:05 AM EDT up reply actions

Reading between the lines

- Eagles thought they might be able to make a SB run this year and the complete beatdowns by Dallas dashed those thoughts. This is a team that is entering a ‘rebuilding phase’ that will be official when they move McNabb.

- These moves were also about money. Yeah it is a chance to get draft picks and clear out contracts.

- At this point, the Eagles are going to be one of the youngest teams in the league next year especially if they move McNabb and cut Rocca. Youth is a good thing but I have to wonder just how much is too much. Who are the locker room leaders going to be next year? Avant/Weaver on offense? Mikell/Cole on defense?

by MG77 on Apr 3, 2010 12:12 AM EDT reply actions

Samuel is not on the trade block?

The Eagles value 4 positions. CB, LT, QB and DE. Of course they wouldnt bring Asomugha in here for 1 year it would be a long term contract. Your point about Samuels being the 2nd best player on this defense speaks volumes. He gets 9 ints a year, gives up 9 tds gives up an extra 500 yds a year on missed tackles. Give me 4 ints a year and 5 tds given up and 100 yards on missed tackles.
