Eagles interested in Walter Thurmond III?
Two years ago, the Eagles gambled a fourth-round pick on a cornerback who was once considered first-round material until tearing up his knee while working out for the combine.
Jack Ikegwuonu, the former Wisconsin standout, spent his first season with the Eagles on injured reserve and most of 2009 on the practice squad before he made a brief appearance on the 53-man roster and was released soon after.
Will the Eagles take a similar risk this weekend in the NFL Draft? Last week, they brought Oregon cornerback Walter Thurmond into the NovaCare Complex among a number of defensive back prospects, a league source confirmed.
If the name doesn’t ring a ball, it’s because Thurmond isn’t considered among the top cornerback prospects and probably won’t join Joe Haden, Kyle Wilson, Devin McCourty and Kareem Jackson in hearing his name called in the first two rounds. But, at one point, Thurmond was in their company.
One AFC college scout who covers the West Coast told me Thurmond would have been “the best cornerback in the draft” -although he later admitted Haden is probably better – if not for shredding his knee while returning a kickoff against Cal in the third game of the season. Thurmond’s ACL, MCL and PCL were each damaged in a season-ending injury that required surgery. (Remember the Daunte Culpepper injury?)
The scout also said his team believes Thurmond will need two years of rehab and recovery before he’s ready to play and took Thurmond’s name off its entire draft board. He thinks Thurmond probably won’t go higher than the sixth round.
“I know everyone is big on Kyle Wilson,” the scout said. “I thought he was better than Kyle Wilson, before he got hurt.”
So, how interested are the Eagles? Well, Thurmond wasn’t born in the area and didn’t attend college locally, so he was one of the 30 prospects the team is permitted to host at its headquarters. That should tell you that their interest is more than just cursory. According to the league source who confirmed Thurmond’s visit, the cornerback only interviewed with the Eagles. He didn’t work out.
The Eagles, who have hosted Tennessee safety Eric Berry, scouted Wilson and dispatched secondary coach Dick Jauron to McCourty’s pro day at Rutgers, have invested plenty of time looking at some of the top defensive backs across the country. Howie Roseman recently admitted that the team needs to replace traded cornerback Sheldon Brown, and although he suggested that Ellis Hobbs is ready for the job, rest assured that the Eagles will come away from the draft with a few new faces in the secondary.

I pray we take Walt!!!!!! Once he gets healthy we would be getting a steal. Trust me he wouldn't be another Ikegwuonu.

I’d like it. Even if it is Ikegwuonu again, I think its worth the risk.

agreed
and took Thurmond’s name off its entire draft board.
though hopefully he’ll drop & we’ll sign him as an undrafted free agent
or use on our compensatory picks

sure we would take him
Torn ACL’s are the Eagles bread and butter. Sign him up fat man.
On a personal note. Low risk, high reward is something I am fond of. a 6th round pick is nothing if we get someone who ends up being the 2nd best corner in this draft or even somebody who just can’t recover and gets no playing time. How many 6th round picks stay with a team? I like it.

Exactly. I love taking risks like this. Even Cornelius Ingram wasn’t a bad pick because of the high reward potential. As long as it’s not in the first 3 rounds I think it’s a good call.

Is this the obligatory time to mention Tom Brady?

How about Marques Colston? Maybe he was a 7th. But there have been a number of 6th and later picks that are pretty damn good. I don’t have the desire to look any up though. But I get TT’s point, that’s why I like the idea of taking Thurman.

not really cause 1) it blows my argument up and is very damging to my point and 2) In general, Brady was a special case as well as some other people are I am sure. But if the research* was done, I am sure more 6th round picks amounted to nothing then something.
*said research will not be performed by my lazy ass.

Haha, I know. I’m just being an ass. I feel like every time you see ESPN bring up late round picks who pan out one of those clowns always goes “oh and there was that guy in New England. Tom Brady. Won a couple of Super Bowls. He wasn’t a bad pick.”
Besides, for every Tom Brady there are 100 Ra’Shon Harris’. Yeah, I wiki’ed last year’s draft for the 6th round selections.
Let the beasting begin.

I like the * part of it.
I should start including something like that, ‘cause most of the time I know my facts and I’m lazy as hell, and don’t want to back it up with proof. That probably invalidates my argument sometimes though.. Ah, who cares.

This is more than just a torn ACL, he had all 3 major ligaments repaired. I am curious as to how many players are able to compete at a high level after such an injury.
But I do agree that from a risk/reward prospective, he would be worth a shot in the 5th-6th.

I’m not saying he’s been great since it happened, but wasn’t that what happened to Carson Palmer in that playoff game against Pittsburgh a couple years ago?

Shaun Livingston anybody?
Livingston suffered a debilitating knee injury, dislocating his left kneecap after landing awkwardly following a missed layup, resulting in the left leg snapping laterally. Livingston injured almost every part of his knee, tearing the ACL, the PCL, and the lateral meniscus, badly spraining his MCL, and dislocating his patella and his tibia-femoral joint.

is he really low risk? He can’t catch and is a poor decision maker on and off the field. Even worse is it could take a 4th or 5th rounder to get him.
He had 1 relevant year and wasn’t even the best RB on the team. I honestly think that Oregon is a really good running team, I think Blount will probably be a decent backup but I would in no way call a guy who hit another player a low risk option. He was suspended in each of his two years at Oregon, that’s 100% suspension rate … awesome.
They call me The Professor.
But in his defense
That punch was freaking awesome. You know you watched that on YouTube a thousand times. He was giving up 30 or 40 pounds and dropped the dude with one Falcon Punch. Heck, I may go watch it again right now.

I wouldnt mind taking him
just decided they should add something to the health care bill. Everyone should be made to get a membership to a gym and must use it. If not then they should be penalized for not taking care of themselves. All in favor? Oh wait...it doesn't matter what we think.
I hope we jump all over him.
I’m an Oregon fan. Walter has amazing skill. Would have been a high pick last year if he had come out with Jairus Byrd. And we all know how well Jairus turned out.
Walter’s got intangibles. He was a leader and team captain all season even after the injury.
I’d love to see him in Eagle green.
