Assuming all of the following players ave available with our pick in the first round, who should the eagles grab? These are all players that many "experts" have philly picking in rnd.1
Mike Iupati is a massive guard that started three years at Idaho although he did miss some time in 2008 after dealing with offseason shoulder surgery. He is one of the more powerful blockers in the draft and once he gets his hands on opponents it’s pretty much all over. Iupati was born in American Samoa and English is not his native language which can slow down his progress when it comes to learning new schemes and the playbook. While it may take Iupati a bit longer to develop into a front line player, he could have a long and productive career once he settles in. Would certainly fit nicely in the interior of our OL. Seems to have the "nastiness" of John Runyan, if Pittsburgh or another team doesn't snag him first. Drawbacks: We seem to have our OL set, as long as Stacy Andrews can play. Can we afford to take an offensive player first, with so many holes on the defensive side?
Sean Weatherspoon is an excellent combination of size, strength and athleticism for the position. He is a tough hard-nosed linebacker that plays with a great motor. Weatherspoon is a solid tackler but not a thumper in this area. He runs well and shows good range in pursuit as well as in coverage. Weatherspoon leverages the ball well with good angles and proper body positioning. He uses his hands well to ward off blockers and maintain gap responsibility. Weatherspoon is an intelligent linebacker that possesses great intangibles that along with physical attributes which should make him a productive player as a rookie. Has the speed to help out our LBs quite a bit, if Giants don't pick him. Drawbacks: It's been said a million times: LBs seem to be the least important players on our defense, and we have Bradley coming back to help us improve.
Kyle Wilson is an athletic versatile player that has immediate value giving depth to the secondary as well as contributing as a return specialist. He is aggressive to go after the ball as a coverage defender as well as fielding punts and kicks. Wilson understands angles and how to leverage the ball that may fit best in combination zone schemes. He shows good vision and instincts to find a crease as a punt returner. Wilson lacks great top end speed but shows excellent quickness and hips to be effective as a nickel defender. He is a willing run support player but isn’t physical and needs to improve in this phase of the game. Wilson is a good football player that should contribute in a rookie season and eventually vie for a starting position. Would help us in one of our weakest positions, of course assuming the Texans don't get him first. Drawbacks: We certainly could get a CB, possible as good or almost as good as Wilson in the 2nd round. If you put Harris and Jackson at CB, wewould have both of them plus Samuel, Hobbs, and Hanson already at CB.
Taylor Mays has an outstanding combination of size, strength and athleticism for the safety position. He possesses excellent speed, quickness and burst for his size, which makes him a versatile player who could fit in several different schemes. He has good instincts to attack the alley as a run defender and can make plays in the passing game as a deep safety. He tends to be too aggressive with the ball in the air, trying to make the big hit instead of making a play on the ball. He can be inconsistent with his angles and technique but relies on his great athleticism to recover and make the play. Mays will be highly coveted in this year's draft if concerns about his overall mental makeup are answered. Could be our replacement for one of the best Eagles of all-time , the Wolverine. Drawbacks: Could he be the new Roy Williams (the safety for Dallas who could really bang but couldn't cover anyone)?
These seem to be the players I've heard picked most for us in mocks, although it seems likely a few of the players will be gone. But assuming all of these are there, who would you want to see us grab?
ps- this is my first posting on the sight, have been reading it for a while though
