2 rounds

the Jets traded a 2010 fifth and the Buccaneers traded a 2011 sixth, that is a 2 round value difference.

by d-jackfan10 on Apr 12, 2010 9:39 AM EDT reply actions

Well when you think about it...

They’re basically paying a 5th rounder (in a deep draft) for 12 games of Holmes. He is suspended the first four games, and is in the last year of his contract.

by Team Serbia on Apr 12, 2010 9:40 AM EDT reply actions

Didn’t realize he was in the last year of his deal.

Could even be less than 12 games if this assault thing has legs.

by JasonB on Apr 12, 2010 9:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Yea exactly

I’m sure all of those aspects diminished his value. Also, I read from a few places that the Steelers didn’t want to pay him at all. So they really had very little leverage to work out of (assuming they were actively shopping him).

by Team Serbia on Apr 12, 2010 9:56 AM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn't have minded giving up a fifth for Holmes.

He’s pretty good.. You gotta admit. I don’t like him or his personality, but Maclin Jackson and Holmes? Defenses would be shitting their pants.

Eh

I understand what you’re saying. A 5th rounder isn’t exactly a big investment, especially when you have the # of picks that we have this year…BUT…I’d prefer to keep a trouble making personality out of the locker room dynamic at almost ANY cost!

Vick HAD to be on his best behavior or he was done forever and a complete social pariah.(sp?) But Holmes is young and unless he’s punished severely he could make more mistakes. I don’t see us bringing in bad character guys.

Where were the Cowboys on this?

They couldn’t give up their 4? Seriously?

I know they’re trying to “clean up their locker room,” but they missed a big opportunity on this one. Yay!

Still have so much money and investment tied up in Roy Williams…

by JasonB on Apr 12, 2010 9:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, that’s the abysmal trade that keeps on giving. They also still have to lock up Miles Austin long term, and that won’t be cheap – I’m sure Austin and his agent are looking at Roy Williams type dollars. Here’s to hoping those negotiations don’t go smoothly. I think the only thing that’s keeping the Cowboys from swallowing hard, sucking up the guaranteed money they owe RW, and cutting bait now is a little thing known as Jerry Jones’ ego.

But I can’t lie – Had they traded their 4 for Holmes, I’d be very bummed.

what sorta bothers me about that trade

is how well the ‘Boys actually absorbed it. A 1st, 3rd, and 6th is ENORMOUS for anyone, let alone a guy that couldn’t touch James Thrash’s #s as an Eagle, and one that makes Freddie Mitchell look solid.

But that was just ’08…I would have expected that to kick their asses…and instead they turned right around and kicked our asses

I hope they mortgage away the draft for Dez. I hate Bryant anyway. I don't think he is

as good as any of the WR from last years draft.

I keep hearing how deep this draft is, but this draft appears slim in RB, WR, QB. I but appears loaded in CB, S, LB. Funny, those are the things we need :P.

by yophillybro on Apr 12, 2010 9:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah Bryant certainly has a lot of red flags to his name… none of them being legal or drug problems though and none of them being on-field problems. If he pans out, he has Andre Johnson potential. Hate to say it, but I think he’s better than all of the WRs in last years draft.

Haha, how do you know he would be the BPA available at 24? You can’t know that until our number is called. Let’s say McClain(due to his Crohn’s disease), Iupati, Kyle Wilson, McCourty, C.J. Spiller, Weatherspoon, Anthony Davis and Brandon Graham are all available at 24.

Do you still take a Brandon Marshall clone? A negative diva with huge character concerns, that can’t run routes and drops passes? ……I didn’t think so.

Dez Bryant > all of the above… Except maybe Davis, Spiller and McClain.

So yes, I’d still take him. For Bryant to fall to 24, a lot of those players you mentioned would have to be off the board.

And BTW… McCourty and Weatherspoon are barely 1st round picks… why you mentioned them in your list, I dont know.

But to clear things up… I wouldn’t be against taking Bryant IF he was the BPA. If we had the choice of Bryant or Wilson, Byrant or McClain, or Bryant or Graham, then yes I’d definitely have to think about it only because the defensive players would be right up there grade-wise and they’d fill a need at the same time. So, no it’s not a given that he’d be the BPA… but at 24, there’s no question it’d be a great value pick.

by Smitty2K3 on Apr 12, 2010 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I mentioned McCourty and Weatherspoon because IMO, they would make a bigger positive impact on our team than Bryant will.

That’s awful sketchy, though. I mean, how do you handle that? We’d almost be forced to trade one of the three at some point. Also, it gets to a point where you’re oversaturated with talent at a position and you can’t squeeze more productivity out of them (and it’s actually detrimental), and I think drafting Bryant would put us past that point.

I am the people's troll :3™

by yomjoseki on Apr 12, 2010 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, obviously it would be a luxury pick (which isn’t ideal, but when you have 11 total picks and 7 in the first 4 rounds, it’s not so crazy to grab a guy that may be head and shoulders above the next guy down on your draft board.

That aside, how many teams out there are equipped to cover DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, Jason Avant, and Dez Bryant?

Chill with the sarcasm. He is extremely talented but there is no doubt he has a red flag on character. Why else would people think he would be dropping out of the top ten? I would have a huge problem with selecting him at 24. We have three, very good young receivers. One of them got extended, one will get extended after next season, and the other probably the following season. If we didn’t select Maclin last year, than this “luxury” pick would make sense.

Of course, Bryant will have a problem with sharing the ball with 3 other receivers. He is a top 10 talent that won’t be getting enough opportunities. Less opportunities = less production. Less production = less $$$.

If he takes away opportunities from Maclin or Jackson, that could cause a problem as well, since both have a big payday coming up. Did you see how Jackson sounded when they selected Maclin last year? He sure as hell wasn’t pleased. How do you think he would feel if they selected another one in the first round this year?

All in all, he is just not a good fit for us.

Can’t argue there. I agree that WR is probably the last position that needs to be addressed in the first round. I’d much rather see a defensive player taken. But I’m just saying Dez is great value at 24. If he’s the BPA, then I can see the logic behind picking him.

All in all, we’re arguing over nothing though because the Eagles will not draft Bryant.

by Smitty2K3 on Apr 12, 2010 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Very interesting breakdown of Bryant by OSU WR coach Gunther Brewer, who also coached Randy Moss at Marshall...
"He can be a game-changer. He’s a guy that’s big and physical. He may not have the 4.4 or 4.3 speed that people seem to think you need, but he’s a big guy like Larry Fitzgerald that doesn’t seem to get caught. A lot of those corners are 5-9, 5-10 and 180 pounds. They might be faster than him, but they have a real hard time covering him. … He’s the best at everything that has to do with going up and getting the ball in the air. He’s better than Randy [Moss] at the fade. He’s just got an amazing feel at getting to the ball in the air. He can tweak his body and get to it, and he’ s so strong. His vertical and ability to play is the in the air is tremendous. … People are concerned about his speed [as a punt returner], but he’s so strong that people fall off of him and he has the ability to make people miss. He has that quick-twitch ability to get going fast. And he’s fearless to catch the ball. … I don’t think he has a character issue at all. It’s a time-management and life skills issue. He comes from a terrible background, but he’s never been in any [legal] trouble. … Saying he’s a pathological liar, that’s not true. The only time he lied was when he got scared by the NCAA about losing his [college] career, which ended up happening. Nine out of 10 guys in that situation would probably have done the same thing. … It’s going to be important wherever he goes for the receivers coach and offensive people to get to know him as a person and not just as a piece of meat. He’s a kid who has a good heart and wants to learn the game. He’s going to need some attention as far as the life skills part of it."

offensive weapons

isn’t really something the Cowboys are lacking. They do need to find someone solid opposite Austin, but a lot of them are high on Oggletree (even though he has yet to actually do much on the field)…he’s someone that might develop in the offseason. I’d be fine with them taking Bryant especially if it was at the cost of addressing Flozell’s giant and vacant hole on the line

According to Mort this trade came together very quickly so who knows if the Cowboys even knew if he was on the block, plus there was a chance he could get released so maybe the Cowboys if they knew about it just wanted to wait and see. Holmes also wasn’t going to be a Steeler after this year anyways so I guess the Jets will have to make a decision between him and Edwards because I am not sure they can bring both back.

by antoniak on Apr 12, 2010 10:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Count me unimpressed

His “good argument” about why a 5th was fair compensation goes like this:

The Cardinals only got a 3rd and a 4th for Boldin (who will be 30 in October and hasn’t had an 1100 yard season in four years), and the Raiders only got a 4th for Moss (who was 30 at the time and hadn’t had an 1100 yard season in four years).

Doesn’t strike me as compelling logic that a 5th is fair compensation for a 26 year old WR coming off a 1200 yard season.

by Eric T. on Apr 12, 2010 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions

You have to look at the circumstances

Holmes is suspended 4 games (and possibly more). That uncertainty right there diminishes a lot of his value. Also, he’s in the last year of his contract. So at most, you’re getting a 12 game rental + playoffs.

by Team Serbia on Apr 12, 2010 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Moss was signed for two more years, at salaries of $10M and $11M.

Boldin was under contract for only one more year.

The four game suspension is an issue, sure. But 12 games plus the opportunity to resign a 26-year-old WR coming off a 1200+ yard season, versus 16 games plus the opportunity to resign a 30-year old WR who hasn’t done it in four years, and the latter guy gets you a 3rd and a 4th and that’s an explanation for why the former guy is only worth a 5th?

Just saying, it’s not the most compelling logic I’ve ever heard.

by Eric T. on Apr 12, 2010 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Just because it’s not as bad as a few other terrible trades doesn’t make it any better.

My two Uncles who are Steelers fans are indifferent to it because they thought Holmes had a chance of getting suspended and they weren’t sure if he was going to be re-signed. Also the owner doesn’t like it if you screw up unless you are Roethlisberger it seems like.

by The Legend on Apr 12, 2010 10:19 AM EDT reply actions

Roethlisberger is the face of the franchise and their guy at QB for the foreseeable future. Even teh Steelers have to bend their rules a bit for certain players. Roethlisberger is one of them.

You know what makes this deal look so much worse? Holmes is one of those guys that could’ve EASILY reeled in a 3rd round compensatory pick two years from now. Why not just let him play out the last year of his contract?

Dude is probably related to Plaxico

Hopefully he doesn’t shoot himself in the leg like the other idiot once he gets to the New Jersey Jets. ESPN has been covering it like crazy, and after seeing how much shit this dude got into over only 4 years, smart move by the Steelers.
