Why Marlin Jackson makes sense

Now before you guys jump down my throat please read the entire post and hear me through... Also I dont know if we'd sign him but this seemed like something else other than the "this offseason sucks", "trade McNabb(or kolb or vick)" crap that's boring.

Star-divide

So here is some background info before we begin:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marlin_Jackson

Now keep in mind that this is wikipedia. But it basically says that he was the 29th pick in 2005, that he's made some pretty good plays through the year and that he's a decent play-maker. Also he tore up his knee.

Ok, Now why I feel he fits:

Jackson is the type of athlete we go after, one who's a solid tackler, and a solid playmaker. With the likes of Sheldon Brown and Asante Samuels back there he could be the perfect weapon, or for lack of better terms he's the happy medium between the two and could really fit in at FS here. He has the ability to play FS and CB, he isnt really a converted FS, or at least he doesnt play like it.

The Pro's:

First off he's a good football player, whenever I watched him play he seemed to be a very good athlete and a good football player. He seemes to get a decent amount of INT's a year and he seems to be a very solid cover guy. And I think the main advantage to him would be that he can tackle.  He'd be an instant upgrade over anyone we have at FS.

The Con's:

He has some injury problems which seems to be the reason that the Colts have not resigned him. He is coming off a torn ACL however I believe he suffered it early last year. Other than that I cant really find any real Cons.

I like it

I’d love to get somebody, anybody at this point. Not because I think this is a bad offseason, just a boring one. We’ve made the key house-cleaning stuff (Avant/Weaver/Ditch Reggie, next ditch Curtis) and cleared some cap room with Spoon, I’d like to see us bring somebody in. I’m a little worried about LB, but I could see us starting Bradley, Fokou, and Jordan if we need to. And this guy is just a good, versatile player. Lets do it, haha.

Sure bring him in

But as a corner. Fuck this tweener shit. Draft a FS or trade for a FS, but stop trying to convert people. With Hanson struggling so bad last year, and definetely showing in his time here that he is nothing but a nickel corner, a little healthy competition couldn’t hurt. Hobbs is almost assured to stay in some facet (note the 1st rd tender) so maybe bringing in Marlin would signal the end for Hanson. This move would be alright in my opinon, as long as it is for corner.

i'm sure some of my comments have come off against anti-marlin

it’s not that i don’t think he’d be a good addition, he would. i just don’t want him to be the ‘solution’ at safety. Cornerback depth? sure. he’s young, he obviously had potential to be drafted so high.

by Q27 on Mar 9, 2010 11:01 PM EST reply actions

did you want Rolle (Giants)?

1st round corner converted to safety. They have very similar career paths, and CB/FS isn’ t a huge difference these days, plus he’s alreayd played safety for the Colts.

My "t" and "y" buttons are messed up so don't bitch at me about misspelling, I'm just saying.

by RadioheadbeatlesEagles on Mar 10, 2010 1:10 AM EST up reply actions

yeah i did want rolle

marlin jackson obviously isn’t rolle, though.
if this guy turns out to be a starting-caliber safety for us I’d willingly admit I was wrong, but i think he’d be better suited as cornerback depth

by Q27 on Mar 10, 2010 1:33 AM EST up reply actions

He started at FS when bob sanders got hurt a few years ago,

he’s played quite a bit as a FS, plus he’s a cover guy who can tackle that’s exactly what we need.

This could be a potential disaster.

He is coming off a ACL tear and nobody knows how he will do. Along with Bradley, and Andrews, and Ingram. These guys are all great football players but we are depending on them too much to be solid contributor. I dont want to seem negative because i hope our boys come back better than ever. I just dont like the idea of depending on this guy coming in to be our potential FS. There has to be a better outcome to our FS need. Or atleast a great plan B. This draft has great young talent at the safety position. I would hate to pass up on those guys for a CB/S with a torn ACL.

this is fukinnnnnn bullshitttttt..................

this better not be Andys fukin solution 2 the FS mess which he caused himself by not goin 2 bat for BDAWK ang getting him a 2 year contract so he could finish his career where he belongs.I f they wanna bring in Marlin and give him a shot im all 4 that, i just hope that their not gonna act like the problem is solved now and ignore the position in the draft. Im with u on the draft, there really seems 2 be like 4-5 safeties in there who could come in and help a team from day 1, we better get one because Marlin Jackson is not the answer.

by goldenbird09 on Mar 11, 2010 7:46 AM EST up reply actions

So much wrong

With this comment by Goldenbird First of all Andy and JL broke out the check book for BDawk, with a 2 year deal that was more then he made on the contract he was playing on, Denver gave him a 5 year deal that made him the highest payed FS in NFL history. That is a 35 year old FS. Now i loved BDawk but playing in the NFL is not like playing in MLB you have a much shorter shelf life. I for one hate seeing beloved players walk but a roster turnover is part of football.

by sowhatifitisasportste on Mar 11, 2010 10:27 AM EST up reply actions

ok but...............

maybe if they just showed DAWK sum love and let him know he was wanted i bet he woulda taken less 2 stay, we kno how this organization treats older players. Alls im sayin is i just hope we dont pass up on a great young safety just because of the Marlin signing.

by goldenbird09 on Mar 11, 2010 12:05 PM EST up reply actions

Dawkins had his chance to take less money to stay with the Eagles. Show him the love? They talked contracts with his agent. He took the big payday from Denver instead.

Don’t worry about Marlin messing up the draft. If Marlin turns out healthy and capable he gives the FO more flexibility to take the best available CB or S in the draft knowing they will have time to develop the rookie instead of throwing him in before he’s ready, like Macho Harris.

I think

This move was made to take away the urgent need to draft a FS, and I see us taking the guy from who was a bio chemist in england for a year with our 2nd pick and Witherspoon with our 1

by sowhatifitisasportste on Mar 11, 2010 1:46 PM EST up reply actions

LOL.........

hahahahahah so ur tellin me u want Rolle huh??? I was actually really intrigued with him about a month ago but now im starting 2 wonder about his long term commitment to playing football. I personally would rather go with Jones from LSU. As for Weatherspoon u hit the nail on the head for me, thats the player i want and im sticking 2 my guns from now till the draft, i really really really hope we get him,………. Sean W, Jordan, and Bradley with a rotation of fokou maybe gaither and Tracy White . That could be a pretty solid LB core.

by goldenbird09 on Mar 11, 2010 4:36 PM EST up reply actions

I don't mean to be a Negative Nancy but.....

…..is this really the answer you want at FS? Last I checked our safeties were responsible for covering the inner-divisional TE’s in the League, honestly what other team goes up against Cooley, Witten and Boss twice each per year.
I just do not think that a converted CB has the strength and physical play needed to cover these TE’s.

by PierrEagles on Mar 10, 2010 9:35 AM EST reply actions

im gonna be a jerk .... Prove it

unless you have watched this guys career and know something i dont … i honestly don’t know much about this guy .. may of heard his name once or twice … but you gave us no factual evidence that he would perform well here ….

if you look at his career stats there is absolutely nothing that indicates he is a play maker … he didn’t notch more then 1 int in a season … and the only plausible skill set you could sell would be sure tackler and you could sell me that 3 years ago when he notched 80+ tackles back to back but coming off an injury and a season before that with half as much tackles … nothing indicates if this guy could actually “change the game” so to speak … i honestly don’t know him and haven’t seen him play so i could be wrong but if im an investor you definitely dont have me sold

now lets dissect your pros and cons

First off he’s a good football player, whenever I watched him play he seemed to be a very good athlete and a good football player.

so you say hes a good football player eh ?

He seemes to get a decent amount of INT’s a year and he seems to be a very solid cover guy.

he didnt get more than 1 a year and in 2008 he got none

And I think the main advantage to him would be that he can tackle

ill go for this … stats are there somewhat but without knowing the player its hard to tell

He’d be an instant upgrade over anyone we have at FS.

theres no evidence that can prove such a statement except by throwing him in the competition

now the “cons” or should i say “con”

He has some injury problems which seems to be the reason that the Colts have not resigned him. He is coming off a torn ACL however I believe he suffered it early last year

well then why would we want him ? your not selling to us why marlin jackson would fit … your just posting “marlin jackson fits” im not trying to be a dick but in summary you could of just wrote this….

marlin jackson fits here
he tackles good
hes a good football player
he covers good
he hurt his acl early last year i think

cmon wild_eagle ! take this as a challenge sir ! dig deep in to this guy and educate me on why he should be an Eagle ! I dont think he should be because ive never heard anything special about this kid …. maybe because hes a native of PA ? that would be a bonus … are the Eagles his childhood team ? little stuff like that would be good intell … but also prove to us why hes good in coverage , show us highlights or sources of info that agree with your statements … sorry if this came off dickish bro im just playings the role of the investor and giving you the role of the marketer …

Not to mention

He had season ending ACL tears the last 2 seasons. One on each knee.

by Team Serbia on Mar 10, 2010 10:33 AM EST up reply actions

To make it even worse

Both happened during practice (non-contact) before the season started! His knees just shot out. I really doubt he could survive a full season.

Well I think you play the odds

and its less of a risk with a running back. A wasted down is better then getting beat long for a touchdown.

by Team Serbia on Mar 10, 2010 1:02 PM EST up reply actions

eh, I dont think its so much of playing the odds,

I’d say it’d be less of a risk w/ a Safety b/c RB’s have to cut alot more than them thus putting more stress on their knees..

What I’m saying is that if one or two of the players we have who tore there ACL contirbute in a good way then this teams better, whether that be Bradley, Ingram, Stacy and if we sign him this Marlin guy.

I just don't think we need anymore middle-of-the-road safeties

Depth is nice, but we need a starter. He is an upgrade of what we have, but not by that much, so i’d rather look elsewhere.

by Team Serbia on Mar 10, 2010 2:45 PM EST up reply actions

Not to mention one

who hasn’t played in 2 years because of torn ACL’s…

We have 2 Wolverines

And exactly 0 buckeyes or sparties

All is well
