The Linc - Smart to sit out the start of free agency?

Teams empty pockets, for better or worse, as free agency kicks off - NFL - CBSSports.com Football
Teams that sat out the first couple of days on the sidelines were the smartest of them all. Most of these players are on the market for a reason. There is no way you should be overpaying for good players with great money.

Answer.

Not really.

Whoever said it doesn't matter whether you win or lose, probably lost.

We've been doing OK so far

First off, Peppers is not worth 44 million dollars. SOrry, too old and takes plays off. It’s not like hes a trent cole where his motor is going 100% of the time, he literaelly disappears. The ot her DEs were not very appetizing and I’m sorry you don’t give RBs that much money when they aren’t going to start for you anyway.

I trust the FO on everything they have done so far.
-resigned Weaver and Avant
-Got something for Brown
-Restructured Stacy’s deal.

Now all we need is to trade away #5 for either a player or a good pick (or both) and we’re looking OK on the offensive side of things. I’m still predicting a trade

Almost all true, except it’s Vick who should be traded. Probably won’t happen until the draft though. The offense will be fine no matter if it’s #5 or Kolb at QB. We need to deal with all the holes on defense.

No

We’ve already seen what McNabb can do and it’s choke year after year followed by inconsistencies. He needs to be traded along with Vick.

Don't forget the signing of April and Jauron

Those were excellent signings but I think people have already forgotten about them.

hiring assistant coaches doesn’t get the excitement train rolling. granted, they’re good coaches, but they’re just that… coaches.

There were

only a couple of players who could demand big money and Peppers, Dansby and Rolle were all rewarded in FA – good luck to them as they were in the right place at the right time.

Did the Giants overpay for Rolle. Well when you consider he was due a 4mil bonus and 8mil salary in 2010 to get him for less than 8 mil a year was something. The Eagles know exactly how bad the Giants safety play was last season so the Giants had to do something about it in FA and or the draft.

The Giants got the best Safety available in FA and I expect them to draft one as well.

Time will tell if the money was well spent, but as a Giants fan I am glad they went for a player to fill a glaring need on the team.

Thats flawed logic

It doesn’t matter what he was suppose to make. Kevin Curtis is suppose to make $5 million. So if someone signs him for $3.5 million thats a good deal? In the end, you overpaid for a safety. Whether you think its justified or not doesn’t matter, he shouldn’t be making more money then Ed Reed and Palamolu because he isn’t as good as them. Personally, I’m glad we aren’t paying him almost $8 million cause I don’t think he is worth it, but if you think its worth it then by all means take it.

by Team Serbia on Mar 9, 2010 4:31 PM EST up reply actions

Market rate

That is what the best available safety on the market wanted so we either refused to pay it and played Rouse/CC Brown again or we paid the money for an upgrade on what we had.

Did you pay market rate to keep Weaver and Avant?

Why does the first pick in the draft get more money than the previous year’s first pick?

So if McNabb gets an extension it should be less than Peyton, Brady, Brees, Big Ben because he is not as good as them?

by G Fan in England on Mar 9, 2010 4:45 PM EST up reply actions

Thats fine

I’m glad we didn’t over pay. Would you be saying the same thing if Rolle got paid $12 million? Of course you wouldn’t. So where is the line that you draw? To me, Rolle is overpaid at $8 million because he doesn’t do enough and is not that good to deserve it. I’d rather move else where and look for a trade/draft solution. But thats just me.

We use Weaver as a 2nd RB, so when they say “most expensive contract for a FB”, thats technically right, but the way we use Weaver moots that point. Avant 5 year $18 million, I think thats fair for our possession receiver.

And yes thats right. Mcnabb should never make more money then Peyton, Brady, or Brees.

Giants had

limited options – they decided that they needed a vet safety who had some speed, some coverage and some int skills. Rolle is not great by any means but as i said he is an upgrade over what we had which was basically no one.

What were the trade options? As for the draft I think the Giants will take a safety in round 2.

As for the money side 6 mil, 8 mil or 12 mil it does not really matter as it is just a number. Is it right he is getting more than Reed etc? No, but all the NFL players know the rules and they all want to be paid. Next year (or whenever) someone will get more than Rolle – will that be right? Most probably no.

However if Rolle picks off 8 passes and the Giants make the playoffs he was worth the money.

by G Fan in England on Mar 9, 2010 4:59 PM EST up reply actions

So you think Kenny Philips could be done? If your boys broke the bank for a guy who plays the same position and you think they’re going to draft one… Doesn’t bode well for the former 1st round pick.

JR

is planning on KP not returning.

By all accounts KP’s rehab is going well and we are all hopeful of a return this season.

The Giants do not really play a FS/SS combo but 2 safeties, so in that respect KP and Rolle are similiar and will be able to swap roles (well that is the thinking).

When your depth after KP and Rolle is CC Brown and Johnson who is going backwards you need to get a 3rd safety on board and this draft has some good ones in the second round.

by G Fan in England on Mar 10, 2010 7:04 AM EST up reply actions

The way I see it, there were only two true difference makers in the free agent class. Peppers was one of them. While he has his share of red flags, I think he could have really improved the Eagles’ defense. Even if he didn’t give a shit, his natural talent would allow him to beat most tackles one on one, and if they double teamed him, Cole would wreak havoc. However, I don’t think there’s any way Chicago doesn’t sign him. They gave up their first and second round picks this year in the Jay Cutler deal that has so far been an unmitigated disaster. They were desperate, and probably would have beaten any offer — no matter how insane — that another team could make.

Rolle also could have helped because the Eagles don’t really have a good answer at safety. However, he’s not a complete player (a la young Dawk, Ed Reed, etc), and that’s a crapload of money. If you’re going to spend that much, you’d better make damn sure the guy is a good fit for you. Remember, the Eagles already have a highly paid defensive back who can’t tackle.

Beyond that, there were just a bunch of mediocre players out there. I wouldn’t mind having Aaron Kampman, but he’s such a big question mark that I think you’d still need to address DE in the draft anyway. Kyle Vanden Bosch is a good run stopper, but is a backup at best. Chester Taylor would have been nice, but he wouldn’t have gotten a lot of touches. I think you can get a guy in the mid to late rounds of the draft to pick up the slack at RB this season.
