Eagles 2010 Off-Season

So after many constructive arguments via text with many of my friends about what the eagles are (not) doing during free agency, I decided to bring our collective minds together in this post.

What they have done: Avant (5 yrs 18mil) and Weaver(3 yrs 11mil) re-signed. Reggie Brown Traded to Bucs for sixth rounder in 2011.

A few things come to mind with this. Weaver and Avant are solid and did we really just get something for reggie brown? Click below to see how much money we will save!

http://www.rotoworld.com/CONTENT/playerpages/player_contract.aspx?sport=NFL&id=3180

Throw in the Celek extension and Maclin's long 1st round contract, plus the fact we will eventually resign DeSean, offensive skill positions are pretty much set for years aside from QB (which if Kolb produces is set as well). How many teams can say that long term?

Defensively is where we can all agree the problem lies the most. Trent Cole is a complete player. Asante and Sheldon are both great in their own ways at corner. Broderick, Patterson, Dixon, Laws are definitely good enough to get the job done at DT. Are they HOF'ers? No. But they are in no way liabilities. The rest of the defense varies from below average, average, or solid but would be way more effective as a situational player (Ex. Juqua Parker.)

Therefore leading to the needs: DE, LB, FS

Now to what the front office didn't do. Peppers, Dansby, Rolle are the main three guys that could have helped us in each of their respective positions. While there's no doubt they are all upgrades, sometimes a huge upgrade, they all come with their own questions. They also all commanded huge contracts.

Peppers is a stud no doubt, but questions surround his work ethic and playing hard every down. What do we value the most in the city of Brotherly Love aside from winning championships?

Did anyone else see Dansby's contract? Miami must think he's the next Ray Lewis. The guy is good, but not worth it in my mind.

Antrel Rolle is officially the NFL's highest paid safety. Better than Reed? Better than Dawk? Better than even Kerry Rhodes? I don't think so.

The point is, while the Eagles are a very good team, signing just one wouldn't change the entire face of the defense. Signing 2 or 3 at that money is just not going to happen, even in an uncapped year.

This brings me to my main point. Talk to me after the draft. I'm OK with this off-season as of now. It's not perfect, but they honestly haven't gotten worse in any way. (Unless you count releasing Witherspoon but that could signal the drafting of a 1st round LB. Plus we get Bradley back.)

So many scenarios could occur. Trade a QB for a veteran, a draft pick, or both. Move up for a playmaker LB like McClain or S Earl Thomas.

If you made it this far, I congratulate you and this is what I ask. What's your opinion on the Eagles off season? Leave yours, take shots at mine, or just speak your mind about the birds in general. Either way, this could be a pretty cool thread as we head towards the draft.

One final note, to be as brief as possible I decided to leave my QB thoughts out, though they will probably come out in a comment so feel free to leave your opinions too.

Thanks.

I totally agree with what you’ve said about the signings, I do believe we will flourish in the draft though.

antrel rolle better then reed no,better then dawk ,at this stage yes.better then rhodes HELL yes!

if rhodes was any good they would have gotten more then a 4 th rd. in fact ,SD wanted no part of this guy in the cromartie trade.

Better than Ed Reed? What are you smoking?

I am the people's troll :3™

I see your point.

In their primes though, no doubt Dawkins and Rhodes were better. As Rolle enters his prime, he will become the NFL’s highest paid safety. That’s my point. He isn’t worth that kind of cash,

"rhodes is in his prime" .

he had 1 good year.in which he acted like a real football player.that was before they started putting him on tv .then he turned into mr. hollywood and didnt want 2 break a nail .so he started avoiding contact. so if u wanna count 1 good year, then ok but i think it takes more then that……………….just wondering. y is everyone so hung up on the $ on rolles contract? the giants gave him the same money that the cards were..no more, he chose NY. just because u get paid, dont mean your the best at what u do. its always been that way in sports ,nothing new……….eli gets paid like payton, but hes not as good.but he is that important too the giants..its all relative……

what no one has really commented.

The eagles have not filled any of their needs via FA, but we all know thats not the eagles MO. The eagles build through the draft.
A player a would love in midnight green is Earl Thomas S, UT. This guy is very instictive and extremely “rangy” a ball hawk, can run very well, and despite his size he can tackle, and best of all the sky is the limit for this kid, only his 2nd season and he had what, 8 INT’s?

Anyway, Thomas is a very high rated safety and come march 4th was virtually impossible to fall to us at 24. but lets take another look at team needs in rnd 1 of the draft. Before the start of free agency, who were the guys that could have drafted Thomas:
San Francisco – but i believe they have bigger problems.
NYG – They signed Rolle to a ridiculous contract.
PIT – They resigned Clark and probably won’t need safety in the first.
Houston – They need a CB more than a Safety and a D lineman more than a CB.

So in my opinion, not signing a S may have opened the doors to drafting this fantastic player that would make our overall D better.

I really like Earl Thomas.

And if we move up and Rolando McClain is there as well I would love that pick too. Both guys are going to be game changers. I feel like they have Reed/Willis potential.

To be honest, I think were going to land that Merlin Jackson guy,

he plays CB and FS, he’s pretty good when healthy, the only other team that’s looking at him are the Ravens, and supposedly they werent really that into the visit, so I’m assuming they want him as a backup or role player. So i’m thinking he wants to go to a good team where he had the best chance of starting, and so far that looks like here b/c we have a Vacancy at FS and at worst he’ll play 3rd CB.

thats Cobb on Kolb crime if you ask me... as said by yophillybro

"I'm trading Kolb to Buffalo for Cribbs"- the brilliant Trade Kolb
