My fellow Eagle Fans come listen to what wild_eagle has to say...
Well some of you guys are already labeling this offseason is disappointing or terrible. Some of you are flipping out because we didnt sign Peppers or any other big(or small) name player(s) via FA.. But I am posting this to show you that this offseason has been far from a disappointment(at least in my eyes)
Arguement #1:
Sure we have not signed anyone big to come in and make an impact but we have made 2 very very important moves. What were the first 2 moves on just about every "offseason prediction" posting?? If you said Resigning Weaver and Avant then you guessed right.. These moves pretty much make this offseason pretty damn good at this point. Weaver was a key peice to our season last season and now that we've got him locked up for 3 years I see him doing some great things. Avant however is Mr. 3rd down, he's a monster, he's the prototypical slot WR and I would go so far as to say he's argueably the best slot WR in the league. These two moves alone solidify our O for years.
Arguement #2:
We had a ton of players hurt from last season, we were absolutly destroyed by that damn injury bug. There is no way you can argue that the returns of Bradley, Hobbs, Andrews Bros(assuming they actually return) and Ingram wont help this team. Also add in that everyone else who was battleing through injuries will be at 100% and that's pretty much an automatic improvement.
Arguement 3:
The draft is supposedly the best in 27 years. I have no doubt that we will find a starter or two from this draft. I can see us going after a safety early and then just solidifying positions. During the draft however it seems that's when were going to make most of our moves either through drafting players or making trades.
In conclusion I'd like to say that this has by no means been a disappointing or terrible offseason(so far), you just need to get past the facts that we havent signed anyone from outside the Eagles organization and see the rational behind the moves we've made so far.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Update:
Reggie Brown's not been traded to the Buc's for a 6th rounder in 2011... This offseason just went god-like.

Excellent post . . .
Rec’d.
Someone made a point a few days ago, that on the Redskins SBN site they were praising the FO for being patient in the off-season and not overpaying for the few free agents available. Is it even feasible that this would be discussed on BGN?
There were no slam dunk free agents this year . . . sure there are sexy names out there (Peppers) but there are a lot of questions surrounding all the big names. Sure if we landed Peppers I would be excited . . . but I would be pissed if we paid what Chicago did. I guarantee Peppers plays out half that contract at best.
Yeah, I don't always agree with you, w_e
but you nailed this one.
That was me who mentioned the Redskins, and it reminds me of something I saw today from the Redskins’ new GM:
“Free agency isn’t a day, and it’s not a weekend. We think free agency runs ’til the first day of training camp,” Allen told Sports Illustrated’s Peter King on Sunday. "Let’s see who you have a couple of months from now, not just who you have after a couple of days. What difference does it make when you sign them, if they help you?’’
Word.
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
Thanks bud.

If we sign Oshiomogho "the goat man" Atogwe....

and Marlin Jackson for depth, then it will be a very successful offseason.
I dont know what it is about your face,

Marlin Jackson's a good cover guy.

I don't get why he's getting so little love in FA
We should still go after him. That way we can just stick Jackson as a CB and have good depth at the position.

He said 'arguably' . . .
and I completely agree. Who is better?
it's important to note that i love avant
but two off the top of my head are austin collie and steve breaston.
maybe because peyton is throwing it at him, but collie looked pretty good last year.
and the other michigan receiver is definitely better. breaston may not be in the slot with boldin leaving, be he was, and he was/is pretty darn good.
hence the argueably part... Avant's pretty damn good and he gets less
playing time than Breston and Collie, and Collie played on the outside a bit more

I've seen welker play more on the outside than in the slot... Once again
I said argueably.

ugh, My personal opinion is he plays to much on the outside, he really
doesnt play the slot as much as everyone thinks, infact he just runs slot reciever routes while lined up outside.
thats Cobb on Kolb crime if you ask me... as said by yophillybro
"I'm trading Kolb to Buffalo for Cribbs"- the brilliant Trade Kolb
Yeah, but he's still a slot receiver in my mind
Slot receiver = possession receiver who makes plays over the middle and gets first downs
I love Avant, but Welker’s simply the best at what he does. But like you said, arguably. That’s your opinion and I respect that.
I Am Better Than Jack Who Some Fool Thinks Is Better Than Asante (IABTJWSFTIBTA)

semantics… So I agree to disagree lol.

suppose he doesn’t really play slot other then 3rd down…
but your division rivals had a Steve Smith catch 107 balls. I’d say that’s good for a 3rd year WR.
I guess the question is if he’s a real slot WR, like Avant is basically confined too…I dunno what the % of plays he’s a slot.
But the generally (mostly oblivious to reality) consensus is that SS#12’s a slot WR…so yea, Avant’s not as good as Steve Smith,

I’m going to make a fanpost about why Jason Avant would be the best WR on the Giants.
I am the people's troll :3™
Well..he might be the highest paid
Or at least competing for the 4th. I’d think they give Pharoahe the 4th spot and probably Hixon the water boy/ KR duties as the 5th.
Your Eagles brethren should believe you tho, that’s no doubt.
It’ll give me a good laugh if I see it.
Master of the squeegee
Steve Smith was their number 1 receiver. That much is clear. If he lines up in the slot in three receiver sets that doesn’t change the fact that he’s the number 1 receiver. Larry Fitzgerald lines up in the slot sometimes too, is HE a better slot receiver than Avant too? I’m not going to argue that Avant is better than Steve Smith like some people on here will. The point isn’t that our third is better than your first. The point is that we have such a good and deep core that your third receiver isn’t nearly as good as ours.
yo, steve smith lined up on the outside every time but 3rd downs,
that means he lined up in the slot 1/3 of the time Avant did, therefore you cant even count Smith as a Slot Reciever… So go fuck youself on that one, coming over here and insulting Avant.

not sure what games you are seeing, but he was in the slot when he got hurt.
they do move him around but 90% of the time hes in the slot.
IDK what games YOU'VE been seeing...
I normally catch the Pats vs Fin’s games down here in FLA, and I see him split wide enough for him not to be considered a slot guy… Infact my buddy’s as big of a pats fan as we are eagles fans and he even say’s Welkers not really a slot guy.

You can adjust your positioning according to the opposition
The Jets play a different defense so the Pats adjust to it.
this off-season has just started
people get frustrated when other teams are making moves and improving, that’s all. i understand it, i get desperate too.
it’s important to remember there’s a lot of off-season left. the draft, most impoortantly. we’ll be making trades as well, no doubt (i hope…).
but on the other (negative) hand… we absolutely require improvement in so many areas that it’s overwhelming.
ultimately we have a lot of work ahead of us, but a LOT of time to do it.

Couple of follow up points
1. Eagles are likely far from done in FA including resigning a few more of their own FAs and likely bringing in another 1-2 FA signings.
2. Eagles still haven’t traded any of their QBs and I fully expect them to trade at least 1 (McNabb/Vick).
Fantastic offseason so far. Avant and Weaver re-signed long term and we just unloaded Reggie Brown to the Bucs for a sixth round pick.
I am the people's troll :3™
i love the move.
all signs point to some kind of aquisition.
-losing reggie’s contract
-slimming down stacy’s contract
-getting rid of spoon (unfortunately)
i doubt all of this happened simply to resign weave and hands
by Q27 on Mar 8, 2010 9:27 PM EST up reply actions
oh no, it didnt happen for just that...
Westy’s release allowed us some breathing room for Weavers and Avants contract… I think were preparing for an epic trade.

We got rid of Reggie (who underperformed), sliced down Stacy (who didn’t live up to his contract), got rid of spoon (who apparently they weren’t pleased with), and got rid of Westy, who should probably just retire. It seems to me they made moves that they should have made anyways.
yeah, it seems like there actually trying to make a run... Next up Dmac in somewhere

there's still some gems out there...
i still hope the eagles get a 3rd for Gocong and trade our 3rd for Kirk Morrison. He’d be a great at SAM. Much more natural position for him than MLB. I see the Eagles drafting a safety rather than trading for one. Not that Atogwe wouldnt be great. Maybe we can give them something lower than his tender and Demps/Harris. At the very least they can return kickoffs so their WR’s aren’t killed. (this doesnt happen anymore) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9tzr_b9hy0
"Eagles fans are a passionate group who love their team," said McNabb, "if not the actual players. It's not like winning a Super Bowl before the first month of the season is the hardest thing they've ever asked of me. That'd be all those times they asked me to go kill myself."

There’s no way we get a third for Gocong. I have a feeling the Eagles would let him go for a 5th.
There’s no need to trade our third for Morrison. If the Eagles targeted him, we could likely have him for a 4th or a conditional 3rd – 4th next year.
I am the people's troll :3™
im just basically...
going by what they were tendered….not manipulating a deal. Im not gonna say vick for morrison. I “hope” it works out, i dont expect it to work out like that. If the Eagles got Kirk or O.J. they’re in great shape.
I’m not in the view that the team is falling apart or that the players we currently have aren’t capable. They’re the only two players i could see the Eagles realistically targeting, and that i would like them to target.

Agree with you but can't completely control myself
I know, good Eagles can fly under the radar, I can accept all the atguments in my head, but at the end I still feel like “right, but all these problems are still unsolved. Do something!”
Seriously, you might be right that the injured players will all heal and be ready and in good shape. That’s the optimist scenario and it would mean no need to draft offensive line. (well, except for depth, since I’m not sure I want to go into Week 1 with King Dunlap and Max Jean-Gilles). It would mean Bradley and Jordan would lock up 2 of the linebacker positions, but we would still need to draft to fill in the other one. Based on last year’s performance, I wouldn’t trust a Gocong-Fokou-Gaither platoon at the other spot.
It would be nice to have some news, for instance, a youtube video of the Andrews brothers having some intense workouts, or Stewart Bradley demolishing some tackling dummies or an interview with Jamaal Jackson about how swimming in the warm water off Florida is really making him feel much better or something like that.
I’m OK with the Brown trade.

Kneecap came out of place when I was 12, swimming helped.
Herniated disc at 25, swimming helped a ton
Ironically, when I got bursitis in my foot and had trouble walking for a year, that was also caused by swimming, but swimming helped my recovery too.
And warm water also helps.
yeah, I know, it helped my knee alot
plus that’s some of the hardest exercise out there if you go swim for and hour or two straight it pretty much destroys you for the day lol.

In a raging tangent that has nothing to do with this fanpost, October and August are by far the 2 best months of the year. October: October Baseball, NFL/NCAA seasons really gets going after the September wackiness, and slutty girls in Halloween costumes. August: Baseball ratchets into high gear, still summer though, NFL right around the Corner, Pre-season football overload.
