Eagles lock up Jason Avant

I think we can all share some pride with this news.  Avant is highly regarded as one of the best slot receivers in the NFL.  With DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, and Jason Avant manning down the 1, 2, and 3 spots, it's inevitable that Kevin Curtis will be looking for a new employer soon.  I don't know if restructuring or taking a pay-cut is an option for Curtis.

Avant's play has indicated a fearless will to catch passes over the middle and a resolute commitment to blocking on running and passing plays.  He has carved out a role for himself on this team, showing an incredible tendency for making clutch catches on big plays, which often precludes McNabb's equally incredible proneness for throwing misguided passes.  It's been quite a while since Eagles fans have had such a promising and reliable receiving corps, which includes Brent Celek as one of league's best, young emerging tight ends.  Not to mention, Cornelius Ingram lurks in the shadows ready to prove that he deserves a roster spot.

The team will hold a press conference today at 2 PM to congratulate Jason on a new five year deal.  The numbers on the contract have not been released yet.

Thanks Birds

I get to keep my Avant jersey in my rotation for a few years more.

Chase Utley is so good that on one pitch he stole second, third and the shortstop's hat.

I think

we will all see that the eagles never really intended on doing anything this offseason but keeping the core of this team together. To me that means they are banking on the fact that our OLine was banged and our def secondary/LB core was banged up and that is why we did not compete well at the end.

by Dmyth13 on Mar 8, 2010 9:58 AM EST reply actions

Solid move.

Now let’s see if they can replace Reggie Brown with someone a little height – a specialty receiver who can catch a fade like Hank Baskett showed promise to do, but only did it once or twice.

by IggleGreen on Mar 8, 2010 10:02 AM EST reply actions

Long as we have Don... size on the outside doesn't work

We tried that, but he needs guys that can get wide-open because he’s not that accurate. I understand your reasoning, but the eagles finally figured out Don need smaller fast guys because he holds onto the ball until someone is wide-open, lol

by Smallbugger on Mar 8, 2010 10:09 AM EST up reply actions

Ha I do appreciate Donnie though...
Don need smaller fast guys because he holds onto the ball until someone is wide-open, lol

But I thought the “Oline” didnt give him enough TIME to throw. At least thats what all the Dmac lovers say. When in reality, u are somewhat right as he does in fact HOLD on to the ball wayyy too long. We saw it alot this past season in the Niners, Broncos, Chargers, and ALL the Dallas games. But at if we had a WR with size, it would be harder for Dmac to throw Skyrockets to him haha. Anyway, this is why we need a QB who can throw quick decisive throws and not rely on DEEP passes more than not! Maybe Dmac will work really really really hard on his release, technique, reads and accuracy this offseason knowing that this could be his last season. But he has improved for the past 5 years so chances are…!

Hmmmm

I get what you both are saying. In that case we also need a receiver with 8 foot long arms that can pull balls out of the ground, behind himself.

I didn’t see any of them listed in the draft.

by IggleGreen on Mar 8, 2010 10:58 AM EST up reply actions

Yea I know, but good thing is, we dont need a WR with to much speed, just SIZE

and since WR is not a huge priority for us really, we could afford to look at some decent names. Like Riley Cooper from Florida (6-4, 222 lbs), Pat Simonds from Colgate (6-5 , 229 lbs), Danario Alexander from Mizzou, he is coming from injury right now so an uncertain, (6-5, 215 lbs), or Bryan Anderson from Central Michigan (6-5, 215 lbs). Basically there are come guys there..just not the Andre Johnson or Larry Fitz big name guys. But we dont need big names guys!

All I can say is . . .

THANK GOD. I think Avant is a crucial piece to this team, and with Maclin and Jackson we have perhaps one of the most formidable WR tandems in the NFL. My two priorities for this team were Avant and Weaver. I am really happy this got done.

I still think that the Eagles have some things in the works. Ye have little faith BGN.

by zoso7374 on Mar 8, 2010 10:03 AM EST reply actions

Cool

Glad they got it done. I don’t necessarily think curtis is going anywhere because of it, but it’s nice to have our WR corp pretty solid. I wonder if DeSean will get that renegotiation done? He deserves it after all, and look it here. I haven’t seen him doing sit ups in his drive way? I haven’t heard him call out McNabb. I bet he gets it because he is going about it, the right way. Lock him up Reid. Lets have our WR corp together completely for the next 4 years at least.

comin days, I think. We will see Kolb extended, Curtis restructured, Jackson renegotiated and possibly Jordan extended. good times.

What I wanted this off season was Weaver and Avant … yes it was nice to dream about Peppers or Rolle or some other big names that were given massive deals that I’m not sure I’d be celebrating if the Eagles had done it.

They call me The Professor.

by Whodie126 on Mar 8, 2010 10:20 AM EST reply actions

I can definitely say I wanted Weaver and Avant, but that's also not all I want by the time all is said and done.

DE, LB and S clearly need addressing. I’m curious to see if the plan is to actually try to find 3 immediate starters in the draft or if there are trades left to be made.

by NOLACuse on Mar 8, 2010 10:27 AM EST up reply actions

Um yea

I’d be celebrating if we got Peppers! He is a huge upgrade over the rest of the DEs besides Cole!! Huge. Even when Peppers “takes some plays off”, he is STILL better than the rest of our DE’s (besides Cole). It would’ve showed me that the Birds knew they needed serious help at LDE and they needed help NOW, and not rely on a rookie to either have a lucky first season, or to develop and pan out later (whenever that is)! So yea, had we got Peppers, I would’ve lost my mind.

Signing Peppers to a 91.5 million dollar contract with 42 guaranteed at his age is a desperate play for Chicago. This is as bad as the Haynesworth deal and it would have hurt us more than helped us.

He was only 2.5 sacks better than Juqua Parker last year, people are acting like we had no production from the DE’s last year. His production is less then what we got out of our rotation so I’m not convinced he would have made us into an unstoppable force, would we have been better yes but by how much I’m just not sure.

We were tied for 3rd in the league in Sacks last year … Yes 3rd in the entire NFL.

They call me The Professor.

by Whodie126 on Mar 8, 2010 12:01 PM EST up reply actions

Agree

I would have liked to have Peppers, too, but not for what Chicago paid. Locking up Weaver and Avant were two of the things that I wanted to see happen, so right now I’m happy with our off season. I think that we’ll do more, but probably trade and / or draft and not FA.

But i agree about the contract he got..it was a lil much.

Hey..in truth, people think the Asante contract was much too. Huge contract. But that’s what happens when a team is DESPERATE (that’s the word U used right) for a talented player. Granted Asante isnt as old as Peppers, but many thought he was a only a “system CB” or nickle CB. But we needed a CB coming into that season so we sign Asante to a Big contract. Anyway.. moving on!

meh Asante’s contract was much more reasonable for him you can’t compare the situations. And at that point we had Lito and Sheldon and were far from desperate at corner.

They call me The Professor.

by Whodie126 on Mar 8, 2010 1:14 PM EST up reply actions

meh, we did need a CB as we didn't know what Lito was going to do next

His whole contract situation was up in the air due to Agent Rosenhuas. That’s why we went out to grab Asante so aggressively, becuz the Birds must have knew that they were gonna trade him soon at that point in time. Why would u go after Asante so aggressively if u already had a starting caliber, Pro Bowl, and turnover CB in Lito.!
So u can compare the situations..difference is the reasons for the signings and contracts. And of course the Asante contract is more reasonable. I mean, the guy is younger. Age is everything in this league haha. That’s too easy man. But anyway u have your opinion and I have mine.

I think your time line may be off we signed Asante at the end of February Lito started whining after his. But I get your point the position was a need because of Litos injuries and nothing else. But it wasn’t desperate Joselio had been filling in well and Brown was on the other side. We were far from desperate.

As Andy Reid would say, when you see an available improvement, you make it. Asante was, what, 26? A unrestricted free agent of his talent and age doesn’t hit the streets very frequently. The Eagles did what they felt was an upgrade. There’s nothing wrong with having three starting quality corners.

only thing your not taking into account

Is he could be constantly double teamed in Carolina. He was the man. If they tried to do that here, Cole would break the single season sack record. Twice. lol. No not that much, but those 2 working in tandem would have given QB’s nightmares. Thus improving almost every other facet of our defense. However, for that price I agree. Screw that, let him get paid and be on a perennial loser. We’ll just keep on trucking like always.

Exactly!
he could be constantly double teamed in Carolina. He was the man. If they tried to do that here, Cole would break the single season sack record.

This is why I don’t like when people throw stats around to “try and prove there point” all the time. U have to take notice of the teams situation, the teams defensive or offensive system, the players situation, the players impact on the team/other teams and what he forced other teams to due. Adding Peppers would’ve opened up things for Cole.

Fine

Even if Coles isn’t doubled team all that much, Peppers is. Having Peppers would have taken another O line man off one of our LB’s, safeties, DT, whatever. The point I am making here is Peppers stats and Parkers were similiar only because of the different situations they were both in. Pepper was the man, the main threat in Carolina. Here, he would of been one of the main threats, opening up room for one of our other players to have a huge year. Irregardless of that, I still wouldn’t have want him for that price. Just trying to give the guy his just do as a player.

Also..didn’t say that he would’ve made us in to an unstoppble force. It just would’ve been a big upgrade to what we had. No big deal anymore. U said that u wouldn’t have celebrated if we got him and I said that I would. Difference of opinion, simple as that!

I don't think you can look at it just by stats

Our offense had the most 50+ yard TD’s, does that make our offense consistent?

Uh, no? What does consistent have to do with 50+ yard TDs? It does make our offense capable of scoring from anywhere, though.

Um that was my point...

Citing that we were 3rd in the league in sacks is a similar thing. Sacks don’t tell the whole story. We got 2 sacks against the Cowboys in our playoff game, but no one is going to convince me we had any sort of pressure that game apart from those 2-3 plays.

by yomjoseki on Mar 8, 2010 3:06 PM EST up reply actions

We didn't have great pressure tho

All the decent QB’s and lines held our pressure in check. Hell we made Jason Campbell look like Peyton Manning. This is offset by blitzing but our front 4 lacked producing pressure most of the season, especially as the season wore on.

by Team Serbia on Mar 8, 2010 3:22 PM EST up reply actions

Looking back we had great pressure early on in the season.

The Saints game I believe was prolly one of the worst defensive outings i’ve seen from the birds in recent! But we did manage ONE sack in that game. But we killed teams like the Panthers and Bucs. My point is, when we played competitive teams. Contending teams, our pressure was lacking. When we played poorer teams, our pressure was awesome!! Keep in mind that most of our sacks came in the first game of the season..Panthers. I dont know if we had a great pass rush, but it doesn’t mean the we didn’t have a decent one!

you are missing the point by making my point.

Would Peppers had increased our team potential by that much? by getting us about 2-3 more sacks over the year?

He may have changed a game or two but I’m not convinced he would have had the impact that would have warranted 42 Million dollars. That is all.

My point is we had sacks we have the ability to get to the QB so that’s not the issue as many people are making it out to be.

They call me The Professor.

by Whodie126 on Mar 8, 2010 3:42 PM EST up reply actions

I never made a point about Peppers warranting 42 million

But your crazy to think there isn’t a big drop off from Peppers to Parker. Peppers in our system would get 14+ sacks with the attention blockers have to give to Cole and our blitzing LB’s. My point was that you can’t just look at stats and determine if we had consistent/good enough pressure.

by Team Serbia on Mar 8, 2010 3:52 PM EST up reply actions

by Team Serbia on Mar 8, 2010 3:53 PM EST up reply actions

o and btw

peppers makes cole better cuz they would need to double team him .. cole would get more sacks

by jack is better than asante on Mar 8, 2010 4:07 PM EST up reply actions

I agree you can’t just look at the sacks but you also can’t say because Player X is on one side that Player Y will dominate.

Why wasn’t the other end in Carolina more successful if Peppers was getting so much extra attention?

You really need to look no further then the NY Giants … I think it would be fair to compare Cole and Umenyiora …

Michael Strahan was one of the most feared pass rushers in the game and I think it’s more than fair to say he was better than Peppers. Those two only had double digit sacks in 1 year together …

I understand that having two guys who are superior pass rushers would open up each other. And I’m not saying there isn’t a drop off from Peppers to Parker. I don’t think there is a significant enough drop off between Peppers and the rotation to warrant that money.

Would I want Peppers on this team … absolutely for the right price.

This is my original point I would not have been celebrating if the Eagles signed Pepper to that contract because it would have fucked them long run.

Finally, this deal couldn’t have gone to a more deserving guy. The Eagles fanbase is notoriously blue-collar, and this guy exemplifies everything there is about hard work and quietly “grinding” for that ultimate goal. Congrats to Jason, I know he will continue to produce.
