Colts CB Marlin Jackson to visit Eagles
The Philadelphia Daily news is reporting that Colts' free agent CB Marlin Jackson is scheduled to visit the Eagles this week. Jackson, 26, is a former first round pick of the Colts and has played all 5 years of his career in Indy. He's got decent size for a corner at 6'0 200lbs.
The interesting thing about Jackson is his versatility. While he's started full seasons at corner for the Colts, he also spent a good part of 2006 starting at both free & strong safety. That could certainly be something the Eagles find intriguing.
Of course there's a reason the Colts let a former first round pick who has been a pretty decent player for them walk for nothing... He's coming off a torn ACL. In fact, its the second time in as many years he's been lost to a season ending knee injury. This latest injury came from a non contact drill in practice and came after he had been suffering complications from the previous injury. Obviously the state of his knee will be the main factor in any teams' decision to sign him.
Now as I put on my conspiracy theorist hat... Let's say they sign Marlin Jackson(or a guy like him). Then they've got Samuel, Brown, Jackson, Hobbs, & Hanson all corners with starting experience on the roster. Now, that could mean it would free them up to trade a guy like Sheldon Brown who has been looking for a new contract, or it could possibly mean they'd try Jackson or Brown at free safety.
Jackson will reportedly first visit the Ravens.

Kind of guy
You take a flyer on and not count on him to give you any kind of appreciable PT. Especially hope that Eagles aren’t penciling in someone like this to play a key role in their secondary next year let alone as a starter.
“Jackson will reportedly visit the Ravens first”
Why are the Eagles unable to get someone to visit Philly first?
Brent Celek > Chuck Norris
because they know
Banner is a cheap ass bastard

Heh… tell that to Asante Samuel, Jason Peters, Leonard Weaver, Brent Celek…. just to name a few recent guys to get huge deals. There’s really no denying that the Eagles will pay big for quality.
I know that the Eagles will pay to retain guys. But this Free Agency it seems that all were doing is retaining guys, instead of filling key positions (AKA our defense). We heard both Peppers and Kampman say that they would visit Philly “next”. Well look how that turned out! Maybe the organization has some plans that we don’t know about, but so far I don’t think that the Eagles have been as aggressive as they should have been.
Brent Celek > Chuck Norris
First
Samuels and Peters were acquisitions, not retainers.
Second, you might see them not getting Peppers or Kampman as a lack of aggression … others might interpret it as they weren’t that interested in those guys, and they have some ideas (they must) for the positions that need filling.
I find it hard to believe that we’re going to stand pat and do nothing all offseason, so I’ll just have to be patient and see what kind of team we bring to Lehigh.
It’s boring maybe, but the first moves * cough * Haynesworth * cough * aren’t always the most impactful moves.

Agreed but banner is still too cautious. They have spent years opening up cap space and never spend big. Samuel signing was the only big signing where the eagles said here, give us an amount and we will pay it because we want you in our uniform.

TO, Jevon Kearse, Runyan...
RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

Kearse had a great first year with us in 2004… TO had 14 TDs in 14 games…
Past their primes? Seriously?

That's absurd
T.O. was not past his prime, he was in it. And it was hard to know that Kearse would turn out the way he would.
But whether or not they’re in their prime is irrelevant. (Besides, you can argue that Peppers and Kampman are past their primes) … that just sounds like your comeback because somebody caught you messing up.
People can name five huge trades/signings from other teams: Peters, Samuel, Kearse, Owens, Runyan.
Is five times in 10 years enough? That’s for you to judge, but I think out of 31 teams, to end up with one of the best guys at his position on the market that many teams at the very least proves they are willing to pay for someone they think is worth the money.

TO was still great but he had already peaked in SF. Kearse was a failure from the start and yes I DID GET CAUGHT MESSING UP.
by Iggls on Mar 7, 2010 6:00 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Kearse had a good first year here (his career was killed by injuries after injuries) and TO didn’t start slowing down until 2008, so he was definitely still in his prime while with us.

Whether or not you think Kearse was a failure from the start doesn’t change the fact he was a perennial pro bowler before he came here and the most sought after free agent on the market. He got paid huge money and that deal was the talk of the offseason.
Like I said, he was that year what Peppers is this year.
hahahah
TO was past his prime .. yea cuz he didnt catch over 20 tds in dallas .. you are fuckin idiot iggls

If they didn’t manage the cap the way they do, they likely wouldn’t have been able to afford guys like Asante, Peters, and everyone else. It’s so easy to spend someone else’s money. They’re running a business.
I am the people's troll :3™
Yeah a business that’s still got 0 super bowl victories.

The people that have anything to do with the Eagles organization now have only been there 10 years. What happened before that is out of their hands. The people we have in place now have been some of the most successful over the last 10 years, though, and lots of fans would love to be in our position.
I am the people's troll :3™
True but 10 years is a long time to figure things out, until they learn they need to run the ball more and control the clock and game. Eagles haven’t had a thousand yd rusher very often, Westbrook was a thsd yd rusher once only once. Sad to say that it’s only happened once since staley was the starter.

With Andy on this one
Could care less less if the Eagles have a 1,000 yard rusher. Frankly the trend has been to spread the number of carries around.
What is more important is for the Eagles to be able to run the ball effectively (4.0+ YPC) and pick up a 1st down running the ball when needed. They have struggled generally with the 1st part the last few years and been horrible on the 2nd part for 3 years now.
yomjo, you couldn't be more right
The people we have in place now have been some of the most successful over the last 10 years, though, and lots of fans would love to be in our position.
Not that it’s okay to settle for not winning it all, but just as an example, on the Redskins blogs, they’re praising their FO for not chasing after Peppers or being pushed around by Tony Pashos’s agent.
Some of us Eagles fans tend to forget that the spendthrift/build through draft way is what’s worked for the Patriots, Colts, Steelers, Giants, Ravens and all the other model franchises that have the one thing we don’t.
Not to mention only the Bears are proceeding like the uncapped year doesn’t matter. Other teams have even said they’re proceeding with caution.
Even with the change to Roseman, the Eagles are pretty set in their ways. They set values on guys and don’t go much over it … you can agree with that approach or not, but I wouldn’t expect it to change much.

The front office isn't solely responsible for the lack of SB wins
Certainly you have to lay a portion of the blame at the feet of the coaches and players too.
There have definitely been missteps on the FO’s part — the year we had no legitimate punt returner, the year we had no legitimate fullback, the year our MLB was Levon Kirkland — but there has also been at least one roster they assembled that was good enough to win a Super Bowl, and they just didn’t get it done.
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
True Keith true. The FO does take all the heat created by how good or bad they do play. The problem is they have been teetering on the super bowl line for years and every season they fall short and mcnabb has another offseason of rumors.
by Iggls on Mar 7, 2010 5:56 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Hey, I wish they'd go balls out one of these years too
It’d be lots of fun.
But that’s not their style. And in a sense, I guess it’s good, because if last year had been that year and we’d run into the Saints and lost … then we could end up screwed this year.
Clearly there’s some work to do before Lehigh.
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
Good player when healthy but still would like the eagles to nab Keith bullock. Still has the skills to play in this league and would be worth the money.

This is very Eagle-like
buy low.
I can get behind it, but it might be hard to get excited about it.

Patrick Robinson
I think the Eagles should try and grab Patrick Robinson coming out of FSU if they can.
If they sign Marlin, Our secondary can be pretty good.
Marlin was good. Hopefully he can regain his form though
eff you we winning anyway
A.I. IS BACKKKKKKK
IMO he's a big risk.
If I’m reading this article correctly, he has experienced two season-ending injuries in the past two years….that sounds like a big reg flag to me. I’d rather start from scratch than take a gamble on a guy like Jackson.
by Gulfport Nole on Mar 7, 2010 5:48 PM EST up reply actions
He's a risk, but he'll probably come dirt cheep...
He’s coming off two major knee injuries, so he shouldn’t expect a lot of money. If we fill his contract with incentives, we could cut him if it doesn’t work out. Worst case scenario, he’s another camp body to provide competition. I don’t see how the Igs could lose here.

Injured signings I don’t like it, coming off an injury we got andrews and then Ingram tore his ACL again we need another TE I think morrison would be a good fit and then Atogwe but what do I know….
Backup CBs
Everybody knows about the FS issues but I really have to wonder if the Eagles think much of Hanson or Patterson. Hanson was terrible down the stretch as the nickel corner getting beat with regular consistency when he was on the slot guy/TE. Patterson struck me as just another guy.
Also, I haven’t heard much on Hobbs either. Last year at the time of his injury they said it could be career-threatening but they had to open him up to see the extent of the damage. Any word on him?
Eagles gave him a 1st round tender so they must have some kind of plan for Hobbs. He’s a good kick returner on top of being a good CB.
by Iggls on Mar 7, 2010 6:05 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
On Hanson
When he came back from his suspension he just wasn’t the same. I don’t know if it was rust or what… but he was playing really well the year before. I’m interested to see how he looks next year.
hobbs
hobbs is a garbage corner .. but a good return man .. i will gladly take him back to play special teams … but he should no way be playing any corner .. hes almost as bad as macho . hanson >> hobbs .. Marlin jackson would be better than him as well

no?
when has hobbs shown to be anything special .. i like him as a return man .. but i dont want him covering anyone

Sheldon ain't going nowhere
but FS is a distinct possibility.
I dunno…I still have a feeling that Macho will be a darn good FS in this league. It was his first year in his life at FS, in one of the most complex schemes in all football. Try that after being in a super-simple cover-2 zone defense for 4 years where you lit it up as an off-man CB
Be smart FO
At this point don’t just do something to do something.

Interesting sentiment
I think a lot of people actually want them to do something just to something. :)
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
Andy, I like your faith
The FO spending bad money doesn’t necessarily equate to being aggressive. Sticking to their plan to their plan may actually be the most aggressive way to play out their signings. Remember, we didn’t even sign Weaver last year until three weeks into free agency.
I’m sure Roseman isn’t just hanging out, watching American Idol, and expecting to keep getting paid.
I 100% agree we need to stay patient
Everyone’s going berserk that we didn’t get Peppers, Kampman, Taylor, yada yada yada. Well bitching and moaning isn’t going to bring them to us is it. Obviously we have some sort of plan whether it be a trade or what. As for Jackson, I think he is a very talented player, but the knee is obviously a red flag. If we are going to release Westy because of him being unreliable, how could we bring in a guy that missed the majority of the last two seasons due to injuries.
Here’s an idea, lets bring in Jackson, trade for Kampman, get Atogwe, start Stew and Jamaal even if they aren’t healthy, and resign Westy. If we do all that, we could have the Eagles drop out of the NFL and join the special olympics.
Thoughts?
i say we go wildcat on every play with mcnabb, kolb, and vick in as recievers with shady as quarterback and andy reid playing tight end.
You'll be missed, 36.

Hahahaha good point! But getting Atogwe would be a awesome thing. Trade would cost the eagles dearly to get him.
by Iggls on Mar 7, 2010 9:34 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Atogwe would be a good thing
And I do want him, but he is off an injury and I was just thinkin of names to add haha
A pretty good player if healthy. I am not so high on Hanson, I really thought he would be a much better player this year. He was kinda mediocore prior to the suspension and when he came back he was really exposed. So we do need to do something to shore up our defensive backs, and this guy has been very good untill his injuries.
We only have a few real needs
and the draft is loaded at those few needs, and with the rest of our team coming back healthy we can be scary good!!!
so will the eagles really enter the season with 3 potential starting qbs on their roster?
What the French?! Toast!
Per adam caplans twitter the Eagles just signed Jason Avant to a 5 year deal !

Question
I can’t find when he’s scheduled to visit Baltimore or Philly. Does anyone know?
For the Love of the Game
According to Inky today he visited Baltimore yesterday, didn’t sign, and is due in Philly this afternoon.
Assuming he’s actually healthy, I like this guy as our new starting FS, or else giving us enough flexibility at CB to move Sheldon over to safety. Either way it would help. I just hate to see the Eagles taking a chance on more bad knees.
If my mother put on a helmet and shoulder pads and a uniform that wasn't the same as the one I was wearing, I'd run over her if she was in my way. And I love my mother. - Bo Jackson
Marlin Jackson
According to espn he’s expected to meet the media so they are saying it’s likely the eagles will sign him to a contract as long as his knee checks out.
by ryanitus on Mar 10, 2010 1:15 AM EST via mobile reply actions
Sharper
Signing Darren Sharper or O.J. Atogwe would be better. Sign one of those two and Jackson and Jackson could be a backup safety and play some corner as well.
