Eagles Draft Possibilities: Taylor Mays, worth the risk?

Taylor Mays, worth the risk?

Star-divide

Taylormays_001_medium

There is one thing we all know... Taylor Mays IS an atheltic freak. Running an official 4.40 at the nfl combine (and we all know he ran faster than that but they screwed it up)  at 230 lbs. w/ 6'3 height (reciever height people!!!) there is nothing else you can be classified as. If drafted, I think he can definetley bring back the hard-hitting physical "B-Dawk" aspect that our secondary has been missing, and if you don't think so... check out the hit he put on the Eagles own Jordan Norwood in the rose bowl(sheesh!). He's got great strength, speed, good instincts, he's a big hitter, and a high intensity player (perhaps a future leader for eagles' D?) known for having the reputation of a great work ethic.

Ok, so why are we having this conversation? Why don't we just draft this guy he sounds great!!! Well... he's a liability in coverage (Bum bum bum). Not what the eagles may be needing right now. His back pedaling needs some work and his hips aren't very fluid and he doesn't quite possess those playmaking qualities. But if drafted, he is still an upgrade from any safety already on our roster. This kid just has too much potential to pass up if you asked me. It's almost an all or nothing deal. It's like your outcome can either be a Roy Williams(ugh) or a Adrian Wilson or Bob Sanders.

So, is Mays worth the risk? I say yes.Go for it fatman Reid, Go for it! With Dick Jauron, arguably the best DB coach in the NFL, I think he can really help Mays in coverage and help this kid become something special. But here's one thing that really made me say yes Eagles fans, this kid is already 230 lbs., if more weight is put on and or his coverage skills aren't good enogh, this kid can be moved to linebacker, something we also need. Think about it.....

if he falls past the first we could get real value out of him.

i’m not sure that he will with al davis lurking. but this guy could be the next great linebacker. at this rate it wouldn’t surprise me to see us take mays and another safety.

?

what is his upside … because his downside is that he figures out he’s not a football player just an athlete and in the pros everyone is an athlete and unless you can play football you look like a chump and then he looks like a chump.

If he doesn’t learn how to recognize routes early, read offensive schemes, or take appropriate angles to the ball then he will be nothing more then a career backup. Honestly I wouldn’t be surprised to see a team try and turn him into a LBer.

Well it depends on who is on the board with him but I heard him say that the USC coaches asked him to go for the hit instead of the ball. He could just be covering himself up though because that doesn’t make sense to me since I have never heard a coach not wanting a turnover, but if Jauron is as good as I’ve been hearing he is I think he can get Mays going for the turnover instead of the hit.

exactly on the Jauron part

no joke my friend......

safeties have to be able to backpedal effortlessly. you may have a point about pete carroll. but there are a ton of holes in may’s game. i keep making the thomas davis comparison. look how well that turned out for carolina, though. the guy is a beast at SLB. he just wasn’t quick enough to play safety in the NFL.

Agree

There is a team stupid enough to take Mays in the first round. Most likely the Raiders.

I agree

It depends on who is on the board. If Sean Witherspoon or Brandon Grahm or god forbid Earl Thomas (a safety scored higher than Mays by most scouts) are still there, I think we have to go with them. The fact that we have not grabbed up any vets in FA I have to assume they like a lot of guys in this draft. I would be surprised if they dont package McNabb or Vick with a pick to gain multiple picks. There is definitely a youth movement going on right now. And I dont think we are done purging.

by Smallbugger on Mar 7, 2010 4:55 PM EST up reply actions

It depends who is left.

We don’t want Dunlap aka Abriami II. We def should look at Grahm or a couple others who flourish in 1-1 situations with OT’s. If we want to get pressure w/o the blitz we need a.) a de who can get after the qb. b.) DT who can push the pocket back so our DE can take wide angles and speed past OT’s

by Dmyth13 on Mar 8, 2010 7:15 AM EST up reply actions

What i dont get

it that we signed arguably one of the best DB coaches in the league in Dick Jauron and people are worried in Mays coverage ability. The fact is that with all the athletic ability Mays has it should be no problem for him to have Jauron teach him how to cover guys at a pro level.

To me the Eagles are like that girlfriend that pisses u off, then u hate her, but the next morning you wake up and remember that thing u love so much about her

by XxBleedGreen5xX on Mar 7, 2010 5:12 PM EST reply actions

Exactly, Dick could be a defensive coordinator, he and Mcdermott could teach Mays what he needs to know about coverage

In about 1-2 years, Dick could teach Mays what he needs to know and he will be awesome, maybe even Dawkins like, expect way better athleticism but maybe not as good coverage, but still same big hits they lay on people

eff you we winning anyway

name

3 teams beside the eagles who are targeting a safety in this years first rd.

Giants
Cardinals

have gotten their via FA

by Dmyth13 on Mar 8, 2010 7:11 AM EST up reply actions

a ton of teams could upgrade at safety

Eric Berry is probably the next Ed Reed, but with tackling skills. He doesn’t make it out of the top 10, more likely the top 5. Earl Thomas is a complete safety too. He will be top 15. I do agree that Mays can slip to us though. The person we have to watch for that is Al Davis. Mays is everything that crazy man likes in a player. Jets could now use a safety. Wouldn’t suprise me to see them trade up. I don’t know if Mays is the type they would like. Rex helped groom Ed Reed so Berry or Thomas seems more his style. Just overall saying, Mays is a great athete no doubt, and with Jauron, he might turn into the next Ronnie Lott, but I am sure he is on a few peoples radar. All we can do is see. I also am not a fan of his work ethic. If he can address that and his coverage skills can improve. I’ll love him like most of the Eagle’s players. With where were at though. My top wants are; Brandon Graham, Sean Weatherspoon, Mike Iupati. Guess we will have to wait and see like every year.

ive seen him

in the mid second round. And from all I have read his combine just strengthened what scouts assumed about him. Super athletic and stiff hips. Now that the giants and cardinals have filled their safety needs, that is two more teams who will not be drafting a safety early in the draft.

Mays wasn’t very good under Carroll in college…why would he want him in the pros?

in the 1st? no

any later? definitely.

he looks like he has the potential to be beastly in the NFL, but there’s too much talent elsewhere to think we should take him at the end of the 1st.

I have to say he's quite a speciman

I dont like his work ethic but I love the ability… I’ve been knocking on him due to his inability to cover but I just remembered that we really just use Mikell to cover people due to his speed…

If he’s there at #24 he may be worth it depending on who else is available..

Rediculous!

I love the guy but I sincerely doubt we’ll get him. We are stuck right now trying to figure out what we are going to do with the LB Corps. We have Fokou, Gocong, Stewart coming off of an injury and mays. Did you read any high caliber LB’s in that list. No. We will go for the best LB available in the draft. If not I will be really disappointed in the FO and Reid.

Stewart and Jordan are going to be fine. Gaither is a solid backup/emergency starter. Fokou could improve or he could be gone in a years time. I don’t think our LBs are as bad as everyone thinks they are.

Everyone’s making a big deal about recovering from an ACL tear. It’s not the same as it used to be. James Andrews can repair a torn ACL in his sleep by now (I don’t know if he did the surgery but it wouldn’t surprise me). For an incredibly fit, linebacker sized player, it’s not really that big of a deal.

I am the people's troll :3™

by yomjoseki on Mar 7, 2010 10:21 PM EST up reply actions

As far as

Stewart and his knee I think its important that everyone realizes that he tore it before preseason started. When McNabb tore his it was almost midseason. It took McNab his second season back to get back to his high level of play. Stew should be fine by the start of the reg season. So Stew, Jordan, Foku, Gaither, Mays, Gocong I think the eagles feel as if they can get the job done.

I still like Sean Witherspoon but we peobably should focus on Safety and DE in the first rd.

by Dmyth13 on Mar 8, 2010 7:09 AM EST up reply actions

right after the season ended, I would have said ‘no way’. But after getting Jauron as secondary coach and seeing his pure athletic ability at the combine, I would not say no to getting taylor mays.

I’d rather see us get a DE in the first round and maybe Chad Jones or Morgan Burnett in Round 2, but Mays has become a decent option to me.

by alcatraz0109 on Mar 7, 2010 8:07 PM EST reply actions

If we were drafting a FS I would much rather give up our 2011 1st to trade up and draft Eric Berry, a sure thing. Mays is being questioned by just about every NFL scout. Speed isn’t everything; he was raked across the coals for his performance in the drills. People don’t know if he is even cut out to play the safety position in the NFL.

The 2011 draft could be entirely meaningless if the 2011 season isn’t played; at least, meaningless to a contending team. I want to see what the Eagles do with those picks this April.

by ZorkNemesis on Mar 7, 2010 10:38 PM EST reply actions

If it

were as easy as that I would be all about it. But no way they(Eagles FO) will do that. Having two first rounds this year would be awesome.

by yomjoseki on Mar 8, 2010 3:09 AM EST up reply actions

In a passing league....

we need a safety that can cover. Mays seemed to get all his highlights when playing up on the line/blitzing…

Plus the fact that the Eagles were not even rumored to be interested in a free/restricted agent at safety? You have to wonder if the Eagles think Macho/Demps is still the answer…

by Smallbugger on Mar 8, 2010 11:27 AM EST reply actions

+1 on the first part

I would rather take somebody that is known to make the plays, to be successful at covering and tackling, than somebody who is an athletic freak of nature but has question marks in those two areas.
