Eagles showing interest in RB Mike Bell

Adam Caplan is reporting that the Eagles are among a few teams showing interest in RB Mike Bell.

Seahawks, Browns, and Eagles showing interest among others for Mike Bell, source said. First visit to Seattle, as first reported earlier.

Bell won a superbowl last year as third back for the Saints. He actually posted some decent numbers last year with 654 yards and 5 TDs and despite being third on the depth chart actually led the team in carries. He's 27 and has good size at 6 ft, 220lbs. Bell came into the league as undrafted free agent and had a promising rookie year in Denver, but barely played in the next few years until he enjoyed a resurgence with the Saints last year. He was rarely used in the passing game in New Orleans with Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas being more obvious options, but he did show some pass catching ability in Denver.

If the Eagles are in the market for a backup veteran RB, Bell would seem to fit that role well. Bell is technically a restricted free agent, but he was tendered at the lowest possible level. Since he was an undrafted free agent, New Orleans would have a chance to match any offer but if they didn't the team he signs with would not have to surrender any picks.

Eh. We could get someone just as good in round 5 of the draft.

Maybe you’ll find a guy as talented… but you’ll have to teach that guy how to block, how to run an NFL offense ect… all while spending most of your preseason time working with McCoy. That’s why I think that some veteran, whether it’s Mike Bell or whoever wouldn’t be a bad idea.

by JasonB on Mar 6, 2010 9:50 PM EST up reply actions

Mike Bell

got cut by the donkeys b/c severe fumbilitis. his numbers with the saints were ok, but I think there was a reason he sat 3rd on the depth chart behind PT & RB.
I actually think rb is one of those positions you can get instant impact from in the draft and I’m not entirely sold on leSean…
all that said, I like him better than eldra.

by cavortingEagle on Mar 6, 2010 9:59 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed on the rookie aspect

RB is definitely one of those positions where rookies can become stars in just a year.

by chrisbeomsuh on Mar 6, 2010 11:08 PM EST up reply actions

Not really from the 5th round they don’t… And the Eagles aren’t likely to spend a top pick on a back this year.

by JasonB on Mar 7, 2010 12:57 AM EST up reply actions

True

But it’s definitely possible to find solid contributors from the later rounds. I think the Eagles feel like they have their man with Shady.

by chrisbeomsuh on Mar 7, 2010 2:00 AM EST up reply actions

wasn't it Tatum Bell who was the fumbler?

My "t" and "y" buttons are messed up so don't bitch at me about misspelling, I'm just saying.

There’s a name I haven’t seen in awhile, howdy CE.

I don’t mind Bell but players coming from a Superbowl winning year tend to ask for and get overpaid.

They call me The Professor.

I'll take it ...

… won’t cost much, and we know he can produce, at least somewhat, in the NFL.

Maybe I’m just desperate for a sliver of good news though.

This is totally how the Eagles will shop. Expect a bunch of flirtations next week.

that's where i am at this point...

i would be stoked if we got kampman. we have more holes to fill than the draft can handle. i’m hoping for a trade or two.

He’s only 27…just coming into his prime as a mature NFL player. MOST NFL players take 3-5 years to produce and get in the proper physical condition. A guy that works hard to MAKE himself into a player is a lot of times better than a guy with all the talent, who takes his game for granted. Is he GREAT; hell no, but he can be very effective used properly.

Please tell me this is false
A source tells Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post that the Eagles are one of three teams to have interest in Hank Baskett

No. No! NO!

I would be fine with Bell. Baskett, on the other hand, hell no.

Oh crap I screwed that up.

The blockquote should end with “interest in Baskett”. The last 2 lines are my commentary.

Uh, it makes sense. I’m surprised Kevin Curtis is still on the team but I don’t think that will be the case for long. If he is cut, we’d need a 4th/5th receiver. Plus, he plays special teams. S’all good.

I am the people's troll :3™

by yomjoseki on Mar 6, 2010 11:52 PM EST up reply actions

I do think the Eagles need a 4th/5th receiver, but I really would not like to see Baskett back. While I would be happy with more Kendra, Baskett never wowed me as a WR and with my freshest memory of him being a blown play on special teams in the Super Bowl, I would not be happy to have him back.

Proudly supporting a Flyers team with "no honor".

by Justin F. on Mar 7, 2010 12:36 AM EST up reply actions

Ugh

For every nice catch Baskett would make, it seemed like he would make as many/if not more easy drops too. Plus, he wasn’t a real contributor on special teams either while here it seemed.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he isn’t in the league next year.

by MG77 on Mar 7, 2010 12:37 AM EST up reply actions

Bell would be a decent fit. Wouldn’t cost much and he has the bulk. Still like johnathan dwyer in round 1 but knowing read it’ll be a lineman possibly a LB.

by Iggls on Mar 6, 2010 11:52 PM EST reply actions

we have a decent rb corps, buckley will have hands full with mallet giving him a good run. i think we get a big back n 3rd round and either buck or mallet go..just hope birds strategy pans out :(

by EAGLES805 on Mar 6, 2010 11:59 PM EST reply actions

Buckleys small but he had a good preseason and deserves a shot as the backup with mallet and another competitor for the other role. But someone who’s a downhill runner to compliment the speed and moves is needed.

by Iggls on Mar 7, 2010 12:18 AM EST reply actions

Why does everyone say that? If we could’ve cloned Brian Westbrook, I would’ve taken two of him over one of him and a “complementary” back.

Like this move

At the right price. Bell does have the fumble problem which was his big issue in Denver but he brings several positive things to the table as well (experienced veteran back, big back who can be used in short yardage, not a guy who will gripe about PT/carries, saves the Eagles from having to use a mid-round pick on a back). Bell is a better fit than Buckley.

Hell, I would have loved to see a guy here like Taylor but Eagles just don’t run the ball that much and the backup RB simply won’t get more than a handful of touches (3-4) with McCoy/Weaver in the backfield next year.

by MG77 on Mar 7, 2010 12:19 AM EST reply actions

Westbrook was a one in a million player. And I agree two of him would be great. So why not try to trade for sproles. He’s tendered so high anyways so he isn’t leaving San Diego unless the chargers want him to. Sproles has a lot of the same skills plus he’s faster then Westbrook was at any point of his career.

by Iggls on Mar 7, 2010 12:33 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Backup RB

Was down on the list of needs for this team as they need a starter next year at several positions yet including FS,C, SAM, LDE, and RG. You might even add a P here too. They could also use some help in the secondary (nickel/dime CB), backup MLB, and backup T. That’s a long list to fill.

by MG77 on Mar 7, 2010 12:35 AM EST reply actions

Yeah MG I was hoping for Chester Taylor also. Just glad peppers went elsewhere. Plays half assed all the time.

by Iggls on Mar 7, 2010 12:37 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Agreed MG. Center is something they can work out. But a safety is top priority by far.

by Iggls on Mar 7, 2010 12:39 AM EST via mobile reply actions

As much press as Bush got this year, I was really impressed by Thomas. Always seems to be heading upfield, hits the hole fast, and really seems to keep his legs churning which makes him a tough guy to bring down.

by MG77 on Mar 7, 2010 12:48 AM EST reply actions

Why are you guys

bashing on Bell.
654 yds and 5 tds from your third stringer is great.
Bring him to town for cheap, he’s a powerful bruiser.

by Young Eagle on Mar 7, 2010 1:00 AM EST via mobile reply actions

You can get 3.5 yards per carry from any running back in the NFL. That comes from running in a straight line behind decent blocking. He didn’t do much better than 3.5 YPC.

what else do you want thou from a 2nd/3rd RB

hes not going to be our star RB. He would be a damn good #2 to Shady. you cant argue that.

To me the Eagles are like that girlfriend that pisses u off, then u hate her, but the next morning you wake up and remember that thing u love so much about her

We could draft one with a higher ceiling that costs less. I don’t know why they’d sign him. Maybe Fargas or something.

I am the people's troll :3™

by yomjoseki on Mar 7, 2010 10:06 AM EST up reply actions

if we draft one we need to develop him and teach him to block blitz schemes, plus there may be a rookie learning curve, we are still trying to do that with Shady. Why draft a guy who we want to contribute but we will need to give time working on that we could give to our sophmore guy. Sign Bell who knows how to block, wont have that learning curve, so all he has to do is learn the system and he can contribute.

That's where I'm at.

He’d be a good compliment to Shady and Weaver, and for pennies.

2nd round tender pretty sure. He isn’t worth giving away that pick. Round two is where the eagles have flourished lately. Jackson, McCoy, Kolb. Thomas is worth a 2nd rounder just not based on phillys needs right now. Safety is where the worry should be. Sean jones deserves to be back but as a backup safety. I like Ryan Clark and brodney pool but thin free agency at safety other then sharper.

by Iggls on Mar 7, 2010 3:00 AM EST reply actions

No, he’s a right of first refusal tender only. There would be no compensation.

by JasonB on Mar 7, 2010 5:15 PM EST up reply actions

He was a closer in NO

if I remember it right. He got some starter looks due to other guys getting hurt too, but basically NO brought him in to close out games that they had a big lead in to save Thomas and Bush the wear and tear.

He’s a hard enough runner, but I think much of his stats are garbage time.

by Smallbugger on Mar 7, 2010 7:32 AM EST reply actions

I’d rather get a RB in the draft that DOES NOT have fumbling issues…

Kampman signed with the Jags.

by EREX21 on Mar 7, 2010 12:23 PM EST reply actions

Fargas is another option, he’s productive when he has decent blocking. Still think the eagles would like mike bell simply because he’s healthier. But there are still options like Kevin faulk he’s not flashy but he’s a good all around running back.

by Iggls on Mar 7, 2010 1:50 PM EST via mobile reply actions

No on Fargas, Faulk

Fargas just can’t stay healthy and on the field for 16 games. Faulk had a nice and interesting career but he is done.

by MG77 on Mar 7, 2010 3:19 PM EST up reply actions

Fargas couldn’t even pass physical with the Raiders… That’s a major concern.

Agreed but it’s strange how it works. They were cautious about kampman because of his acl. Jackson has had anterior cruciate ligament issues.

mike bell

what is all this nonsense talk about mike bell being a fumbler. does anyone check facts before making these posts. i did. 2006 denver 157 attempts, (1) fumble. 2007 (1) fumble. 2008 no fumbles. 2009 saints 172 attempts (2) fumbles. he has a total of 348 attempts with a total of 4 fumbles. that doesn’t seem like a fumble pronr back to me.
