Dave Spadaro has just announced on Eagles Live that the team will release linebacker Will Witherspoon. In other words, the Eagles basically traded Brandon Gibson and a draft pick to the Rams for 11 games of mediocre linebacker play. On the other hand, Witherspoon's departure frees up $5 million. Could this mean that a free agent signing is on the radar? Hopefully the front office will provide some answers soon.

I heard about this not too long ago

And I’m not really surprised. $5million is a lot for a average/good LB, especially with the low priority Reid has towards them.

Like somebody said in the thread I made yesterday did he really do anything really good besides the first game he was here against Washington? and Spadaro just said that they were really upset with him at the end of the year with the way he was playing.

LB first round or Free Agent signing coming up? We are VERY thin at lb now.

So.....

We gave up a Gibson and a draft pick for this?

I understand the immense need that was there at the time, but that’s pretty crappy.

agreed completely

we gave up a draft pick and a promising young WR for a 12 game rental LB?

Granted we probably wouldn’t have seen the post-season without him, but I’m not going to pretend that last year’s Eagles had a chance of going anywhere with how overall weak we were on Def

dude

gibson is a joke .. he is a borderline roster guy .. who the fuck cares about him .. get over it .. now this is dumb .. i seen it coming .. but he was hands down our best lb .. so now we officially have the worst lbs in the nfl after releasing our only above average starter .. maybe it will be LB LB in the first and second

oh i agree

just mentioning that we barely saw the postseason as it was, even with him. basically saying that we need an upgrade at LB and we technically got worse through this move, even if it made sense financially not to over pay for that production.

I don't get this

He may not be a league all-Pro, but he was certainly our best LB, and with Stew coming back from injury, we could really use him…

I hope this is a sign that something big is coming.

My other thought is that we must really be banking on Jordan. Spoon and Jordan are both WLB only…and is Spoon really that big a step up from Jordan? Maybe not. I think if perhaps Spoon had showed more at MLB, we would have kept him around and moved Stew to Sam…but if he’s really only a Will, and Jordan isn’t that much of a step down, than maybe it is a lot to pay for just a slight upgrade

We're one day into the new NFL year

There’s months of free agency plus the whole draft still left.

Everyone panicked last year when the Eagles didn’t sign TJ Houshmandzadeh and we all thought they’d be lacking a WR again.

How’d that turn out?

If we’re going to panic, wait til after the draft is over to do so. The offseason is much longer than this one day.

I'm gonna take the measured approach ...

… No one day by itself makes an offseason, not even Day 1 of the draft.

I’ll just keep telling myself they wouldn’t be doing this for no reason at all. (pretends “the wrong reasons” is not an option)

Also, put me in the “not that outraged about Brandon Gibson” camp. Getting 12 useful games out of the 194th pick is 12 more than a lot of sixth rounders end up providing. Not to mention the fact that the way you acquire a player really shouldn’t factor into your evaluation of whether or not he has a future with your team.

There’s just gotta be more to all this though …

That's the frustration talking ...

… Look, if this were the first year with this crew, I’d say the frustration is justified. But just last year we rode this whole roller coaster of emotion and even though we didn’t kill on Day 1 of free agency, we had a pretty good offseason.

You do whatever you want; Me, I’m gonna try not to declare the game lost when we’re down 3-0 in the first quarter. It’s VERY early yet. It’s admittedly not going well. But it’s no time to panic. It’s time for some air guitar!

Definitely not time to panic, ut it is time to worry. I mean our LB’’s were the worst in the league last year and instead of adding to them we subtract our best LB. We have no safeties, and again only one good ass rushing D-Linemen. Not to mention #5 is still on the roster.

If Witherspoon was “clearly” the best linebacker on the team, I find it odd that the front office would cut him without any qualms. Sure they’re “cheap”, but as you saw with Leonard Weaver, I don’t think they have a problem with handing money to people who contribute a great deal to the team.

But they very rarely do what’s popular.

Revisionist history

Eagles desperately needed a LB at the time and Gibson would be the 4th WR at best on this team. 6th round pick is relatively meaningless. It wasn’t a bad move at the time and big some dividends his 1st game.

by MG77 on Mar 5, 2010 5:54 PM EST reply actions

No

it wasn’t a bad move at the time at all. In fact, our season would have ended up a lot worse off if we hadn’t made that trade. But, we also thought we were getting a solid LB for a few years, not just 12 games.

by jack is better than asante on Mar 5, 2010 11:54 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think we're denying that it's a money move

Spoon, aside from that spectacular week 1, wasn’t that great in our system. He frequently looked lost out there on the field but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. He only had half a season to learn our system and even had to switch positions. He’s definitely better than anything we have right now, which leads me to believe that Andy has a contingency plan in place. Maybe we’re gonna go hard after one of the Raiders’ LBs? The FO will definitely fix the LB situation before the season begins (I hope). And the money that we’re saving from cutting Spoon and Westbrook will be spent somewhere eventually (signing RFAs, extensions, etc.)

And yeah, I really wish Andy would freaking value the LB position. We always seem to have stop gaps, rentals, or rookies playing that position.

by chrisbeomsuh on Mar 6, 2010 12:03 AM EST up reply actions

Not a big deal

‘Spoon showed this year that he just wasn’t capable of playing at MLB and at the SAM position and he struggled in coverage at times this year too as it was pretty clear he had lost a step. Seemed like he actually played his best game in an Eagles uniform in his first game (‘Skins game) and his play gradually fell off the longer he was in an Eagles’ uniform.

My bet is that Eagles’ FO thinks they can resign Jordan at around half (or slightly more) of what ‘Spoon was set to make and have him start at the weak-side without any decline. In fact, Jordan was the Eagles’ best LB last year and was the only guy who was somewhat of a difference-maker before he got injured. Jordan hasn’t put a full season together yet but he has shown enough over the last 2 seasons that I don’t mind the Eagles making this move at all.

Eagles do need to figure out what they are going to do with the SAM position though because it is pretty clear Gocong isn’t the answer there.

Eagles have the alternative to Spoon

His name is Jordan. Young, cheaper, quicker, and the ability to give them a bit more than they got from ’Spoon last year.

Rather have the Eagles spend that money on one of several positions including FS, DE, or RG.

by MG77 on Mar 5, 2010 6:14 PM EST reply actions

I agree

I don’t think we would have dropped him if he had shown some ability to play MLB. Since he’s a WLB only, the drop-off to Jordan isn’t that far…maybe there’s no drop off.

$5M is a lot to pay for a guy that isn’t really any upgrade over the one position he can play

Reid- Best Coach in Eagles History
McNabb- Best QB in Eagles History

This is the year

by bdawk4ever on Mar 5, 2010 10:27 PM EST up reply actions

i'm not really that upset

i’m strictly talking about upgrading the LBs on the team as a whole. we have bigger holes to fill, but by releasing witherspoon, it makes our LB situation another hole to fill. not as big as say FS or DE, but we are very inexperienced at the position and we just released a pro-bowl LB (not currently playing at that level, obviously) who had 11 games and 2 different positions to show us what he could do in this defense.

sure, there are bargain bin players for depth and possible trades to work out, but i want to make an example with another position and a guy who made some news earlier: fullback leonard weaver. go back just 1 year and you’ll see how the eagles would ignore a position outright. they thought they were smart for drafting LBs late in the draft and converting them into FBs. they would sign a DT and turn him into a FB. they drafted a RB in the 3rd and tried to turn him into a FB before the final preseason game.

then something magical happened: they decided NOT to ignore a position on the football team and signed leonard weaver, a legit, talented FB. 1 year later he signs a record contract for FBs after having a pro-bowl year. if you want a closer example, take our good pal stew bradley. drafted in the 3rd round, he rocked shit when given the starting position. maybe they draft a LB high up in the draft this year, but that’s a big risk thinking you can get a starter at 26 (not saying you can’t, it’s just a risk). i just feel like the eagles will continue to ignore the LB position and the team will suffer (maybe marginally, but still suffer).

it helps to have all your positions filled with players who can play that position well. maybe the eagles don’t need will witherspoon to succeed, and maybe they don’t need star LBs, but when you DO get players that play the position well, they certainly can do better than someone who is just playing to the system. the team would benefit from a veteran leader on D who has experience (not talking trotter), and i just hope they plan on making a move to trade for a LB, because i don’t believe they are sound at the position with the current roster plus a 1st round LB

sure, the eagles save themselves $5 this year in an uncapped year. to quote ricky watters “for who? for what?” to save $5 the next year which might not be uncapped? they are saving money for themselves as a business. that money could be spent extending desean or signing a player to a new deal after a trade, but in an uncapped year, i see that as just a way for them to keep money in their pocket at the cost of talent on the team.

so it’s not that i don’t trust that andy and co. have a plan, it’s more like i disagree with their plan. and have evidence ON THEIR OWN TEAM to support my plan. so here’s to hoping they have a plan address the position somehow.

by PoorSports on Mar 6, 2010 12:51 AM EST up reply actions

That's a good point

You would think that big signings of Asante, Jason Peters, Jevon Kearse, Runyan, etc. would dispel it.

This is one thing that bugs me the most about our fan-base. Too reactionary. First day of FA goes by without a big splash signing and we already have many complaining.

by chrisbeomsuh on Mar 5, 2010 7:44 PM EST up reply actions

Definitely too reactionary

I think part of the problem too is it’s built into our character now; we see our friends act this way so we feel we have to act that way too. It’s not quite the badge of honor that defending our stadiums and acting “like a Philly fan” is, but same theory in play. It’s like you’re not a true fan if you don’t act that way.

I just don’t think the facts add up all the time for all the Eagles FO hate, but also I’m not a real irrational, reactionary dude in real life.

You must be closer to 5

Because the Eagles system under JJ’s scheme has never relied upon great LB. Jordan is a capable enough option but they just need to figure out what to do about SAM.

There are bigger issues though on defense than weakside LB including FS, LDE, and the nickel/dime CBs.

by MG77 on Mar 5, 2010 6:27 PM EST up reply actions

LDE is definitely #1 and FS#2

Serviceable Lbs can be had.

E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!

by Joe_D on Mar 5, 2010 6:28 PM EST up reply actions

bigger issues, yes

but now LB is an issue, as well. not as big, but another issue.

and as i stated above (sorry to repeat myself, didn’t see this before), sure, the system may allow for a lesser talented player to succeed, but they rarely excel. look at leonard weaver. he was a good FB who came to play in a position we had always filled with system guys (LBs, DTs and 3rd round RBs) and 1 year later he’s a pro-bowler who signs a record contract for that position.

bradley is a similar story. but when they drafted him, they had other experienced players starting in front of him and allowed him to learn a bit on the sidelines before stepping in. that’s why drafting a LB early and expecting him to step in and play is a risk with the current players on the roster, IMO. so i just hate that the eagles feel like they can “get by” with players instead of spending a little money (especially in an uncapped year) and getting a better output, even if you overpay for that extra output.

the phillies decided to go that route and they won a championship and earned revenue to put up over $100 million again. and i don’t even think fans would be too upset if the team then went back to their smart business moves after winning the big one. just get me that trophy and then we’re cool.

I guess the defense is going to be better without Witherspoon.

Anybody knows that today is the first day. It isn’t that hard to understand that there is a lot of time until the start of camp.

The lack of logic behind this move is insane. We tender Gaither, Gocong, Jordan. Then we release a proven veteran that is better than all of them. I guess that is why our defense blew so bad last year.

everyone keeps saying that we don’t care about LB’s, we’ll maybe we could have stopped Dallas if we had some fucking Lbs that could motherfucking tackle. But, again, Lbs aren’t that important anyway.

by Joe_D on Mar 5, 2010 6:43 PM EST up reply actions

Lack of logic?

Just because we don’t understand it doesn’t mean no logic was used. In fact, it’s probably quite the opposite, and once we have all the details and the full picture, we’ll be a little bit more justified in our panic or our defense of the FO.

Sorry

Too many comments to take in all at once. This has FO written all over it. We give up Gibson (who was a promising prospect, however with our WR corps, not necessarily needed) to get this dude, and didnt even give him a fresh season to adjust to the defense. I’m pretty irratated at this move.

We have ZERO depth at the linebacking position, so unless we’re dropping serious draft picks and money for a new defense, I dont know how this move makes any sense.

Mediocre the rest of the season…sure, I’ll give you that. But think about how you’d play being plucked from a team mid-season. Great first game (since the opponent has no tape on you playing with the birds) but the rest is so-so. I think this wouldve been a major season for him. He played in one game with us…it was against the Chiefs. He saw a total of 5 snaps, and 4 of those were in garbage 4th quarter time where we were running out the clock. That really gives him a total of one meaningful play at WR, and no, he didn’t accumulate any stats in that one single play…but that’s not really a large enough body of work to draw a good conclusion is it?

So you get compensation for them on the off chance someone else thinks they’re good? So you lock their salaries in at a reasonable price rather than get stuck in bidding war for them if you end up needing them back?

You’re probably right that the tenders mean these guys are in the plans. But perhaps the guys who analyze this stuff for a living have a clue. I don’t always like their moves when I first hear about them — cutting Spoon is a great example — but they’ve shown over the years that they don’t miss often.

You can barely count their botched roster moves on one hand. One guy they’ve let go has gone on to do something elsewhere, the rest, nothing. They pissed away punt returner one year and fullback the next … they’re definitely not infallible. But they’ve earned the benefit of the doubt from me. More often than not, they’ve made the right call on personnel moves … a lot more times than my Eric Moulds-wanting ass would have.

I think I speak for everyone when I say that I prefer Maclin. We have holes at LB among others…I don’t understand dropping Spoon…but I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt (at least until we drop the Kick against GB and end up losing)

RE: front office

i got something to say, is it me or does the eagles all ways go for the cheapest player rather than pay the star? this is bullshit we have the money stop putting the money in your fat ass pocket and get some players dammit. we got beat down three times by the cowgirls last year. eagles fans just face it we have a cheap as front office who cares more about there pockets then the fans.

by justoneringplease23 on Mar 5, 2010 7:28 PM EST reply actions

Be fair

They weren’t cheap when they signed Asante to a six-year, $57 million deal. They “paid the star” when McNabb got a $115 million extension. They don’t “all ways” go cheap.

There are 31 other teams. They can’t have everyone we want. Or maybe they could, but it’s not really a prudent way to build a team. (exhibit A: Redskins)

The Eagles have a philosophy that goes something like this:

They would rather have 53 solid players on the roster that can play at a high level than 22 stars followed by scrubs. So they don’t always make the biggest splash, although they have (Kearse, TO, Asante, etc…). They are DEFINITELY not the cheapest team in the league…they always spend most of their cap room, they just spread it out among a lot of guys rather than paying a few stars.

They can’t have voluntarily gotten worse at their weakest position group just to save a couple dollars in an uncapped year. They have to believe they can start the season with better players there. Anything else is incomprehensible.

by IwantVick on Mar 5, 2010 9:16 PM EST reply actions

He was due 5 mill this year and next year too. No team will pay ten milion for a mediocre Will. There are a lot of weak-side linebackers. Its the strong side that’s hard to fill. You have to be a bigger faster LB to play that position. You need smarts and good feet, plus have ball skills.

You don’t need great players for the 43, but you need the right players. I am convinced we have a plan, so I am not as worried about this move. Of course I am also convinced we are rebuilding with a four year plan and this is our third year. It started with the drafting of Kolb. It comes to fruitation in 2012, we will be competative but 2012 is our SB winning year.

Rolle has always been overrated

He is a faster Macho, who always had too much hype. But there is a reason the Cardinals have had a terrible pass defense over the past two years, despite having Adrian Wilson and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie

by birds'n'raiders on Mar 6, 2010 5:00 PM EST up reply actions

Sure think about it, The Eagles have been drafting much younger players
( under-classmen) for the most part. Next year Kolb gets more experience, then 2011 it’s his show. Our skill players will be matured and then you fill the holes. A full year starting Kolb, and all the effort comes to fruitation with a five year dynasty.

I have to admit I am the eternal optimist when it comes to my Eagles…I do bleed green!!

We have some good talent, but another five-seven holes have to be filled. You can’t fill seven holes with FA, you have to draft the bulk of your team and mature it. We ARE doing that and have been the last three years.

How many rookies really make an impact in the NFL…maybe ten a year? Look how many step-up after three years, that is what we are looking for. Now we have the best position coaches in the NFL with Jurgon and April and our other position coaches. I believe we will see some vast improvments in our existing players. You need to read Tommie Lawlor, he really understands the Eagle thinking in coaching up existing talent.

See I think Demps, Macho, Abrini, etc, are not write-offs. I think as fans we need to give our young talent at least three to four years, some players take five years. Chit Demps can still be a great NFL player, he has all the tools, it just needs to click for him.

We need to relax a little. You guys might not remember the mid-90’s, we had NO talent, this team has some talent, not the best in the NFL, but better than most.

by piercit on Mar 5, 2010 11:01 PM EST reply actions

i think demps doesn’t have it mentally. i think macho could be a good player with a little playing time, but i’m not ready to predict the pro bowl for the guy. he may not have been great, but come on, the guy started at an unfamiliar position as a rookie for a team that won 11 games. maybe people are a little too hard on him. i think that he may pan out to be at least a decent player

by bula412 on Mar 6, 2010 1:40 AM EST up reply actions

by topcat6 on Mar 6, 2010 2:33 AM EST up reply actions

Everyone chill.

They are gonna draft weatherspoon, trade for patrick willis, and then sign kirk morrison. Stew will make a hell of a special teamer. They didn’t want to have to cut witherspoon later, so they just did it now.

by philsfreak6 on Mar 5, 2010 11:10 PM EST reply actions

Like I said earlier, everyone was panicking last year when they didn’t sign Houshmandzadeh or trade for Boldin. Housh was practically begging for the Eagles to make him an offer and everyone was freaking that they showed no interest.

I don’t think we can even count the amount of fanposts on Boldin trades.

Neither happened and by the end of this year we had arguably our best group of WRs in a decade anyway. Maybe we won’t be so lucky with LB or safety this year… but we don’t know yet. It’s a long offseason and it’s literally just begun.

by JasonB on Mar 5, 2010 11:19 PM EST reply actions

Meh. I heard about this awhile ago and after taking the time to process it, it doesn’t bother me. If he had stuck around, he would’ve been one of the highest paid LBs under Andy Reid. He’s a solid starter, but nothing irreplaceable. Still don’t know how high Andy would draft a LB.

One thing I am sure of...

is that banner has a plan… he’s the man… with the plan… understan?

I’m just as worried as everyone else that EVERY good free agent is off the board and most of them are to teams that we play next year. We continue to hear stories that we made an offer for a player… randy moss before peppers… and they ended up not signing

If we just didnt go after the top free agents at positions we need and had faith in a strong draft class… I’d be ok with it… but the fact that we get outbid makes it so much worse that the FO knows the holes but isnt willing to shell out the kind of money other teams are to get the players they want

and if we go into the season with all 3 of these quarterbacks i’m not watching football this year

Sacks aren't everything and are a misleading stat

According to ProFootballFocus, we’re ranked 19th in the league in pass rush, where our whole division is ahead of us, where other teams like the Browns, 49ers, and Chiefs are ahead of us.

Lets look at a few other stats:

Eagles: 50 sacks, 66 QB Hit, 177 QB Pressure
Cowboys: 53 sacks, 92 QB Hit, 186 QB Pressure
Vikings: 54 sacks, 76 QB Hit, 185 QB Pressure
Redskins: 44 Sacks, 58 QB Hit, 114 QB Pressure
Giants: 35 sacks, 65 QB Hit, 124 QB Pressure

and so on… And this is with out being one of the most blitz-ing teams in the league. I would love to see the stats from just the front four. When we blitz, we lose someone in coverage and get beat. Also, I don’t need stats to tell me what my eyes already know. Pressure was NON-existent from our front 4 the last 4-5 games of the year. Can you honestly say you saw anything different? I saw Romo call a bunch of his hot-reads, drop back, scan the field and pick apart our DB’s with noone near him.

by Team Serbia on Mar 7, 2010 2:27 PM EST up reply actions

Um, so how are the Giants and Redskins ahead of us? We’re ahead of each of them in all three stats you listed…

Couple of questions for the "How the hell could we release 'Spoon' crowd?"

1. Do you think that ‘Spoon will get another starting job in the league next year? (I don’t).

2. Do you really think the Eagles have that much of a failoff in performance with Jordan/Fokou at the weakside vs. ’Spoon? (I would argue they are at least as well off and not better).

3. Do you think ’Spoon could play any kind of appreciable time at the SAM or MLB position next year if needed even though he failed this season in both of those roles? (Obvious answer).

LB is an issue for this team but it is at SAM and a backup MLB in case Bradley is slow to start the season next year. This team doesn’t have an issue at weakside LB.

by MG77 on Mar 6, 2010 3:53 PM EST reply actions

I'm trying to find it...

But some guy on twitter who asks Adam Caplan a lot of questions said that Reid said on the radio yesterday that they could bring Spoon back at a cheaper price. Only interview I know of that Reid did was the one with Mikey Miss and I don’t remember Spoon getting brought up.
