Glazer: Kampman on his way to Philly (UPDATE: Or Not)

Fox Sports' Jay Glazer is reporting that DE Aaron Kampman is on his way to Philadelphia for a visit. This contradicts earlier reports that Kampman was headed to Seattle.

Kampman was widely considered to be the second best pass rusher on the market after Julius Peppers. The biggest question mark with Kampman is his health. He went down late last November with an ACL tear. The other concern with Kampman would be his declining stats in recent years, however most NFL people consider that to be a function of his struggles with the Packers' transition to a 3-4. As a 4-3 end, where he is best suited, Kampman was one of the better ends in football collecting 27.5 sacks from 06-08.

If Kampman is healthy, he would be a significant upgrade to the Eagles' pass rush. Coming off an ACL tear however, that is a big if.

[Update by JasonB, 03/05/10 1:15 PM EST ] National Football Post's Joe Fortenbaugh is now reporting that Kampman "has changed his mind and will not visit with the Philadelphia Eagles."

[Update by JasonB, 03/05/10 1:18 PM EST ] Jay Glazer is also saying that Kampman will not visit yet.

Correction on kampan, birds have had talks w his rep but he is NOT visiting at this point.

Whats the deal with his knee? Did he tear his ACL?

by Tron79 on Mar 5, 2010 12:55 PM EST reply actions

What week was it, will he be able to start the season for whatever team he signs with?

by Tron79 on Mar 5, 2010 12:57 PM EST up reply actions

No thank you

We have enough banged up players on our depth chart

by sowhatifitisasportste on Mar 5, 2010 3:31 PM EST up reply actions

And I don’t know. Some people heal faster than others.

by JimmyK on Mar 5, 2010 12:58 PM EST up reply actions

wikipedia says week 11 he hurt his knee, which I assume means he tore his ACL

by eagleyosh on Mar 5, 2010 12:58 PM EST up reply actions

maybe he had a connecting flight. GB—>SEA—>PHI.

by eagleyosh on Mar 5, 2010 12:55 PM EST reply actions

He must have been flying Delta.

by JimmyK on Mar 5, 2010 12:56 PM EST up reply actions

This is a good move, if they sign him. It’s a risk with the knee, but in terms of the motor and the production, it’s hard to find flaws. He had 38.5 sacks in the previous three seasons. He’s averaged 52 tackles a year the previous 5 years (and was on pace for 53 before his injury this year). Keep in mind he is not coming here to be THE guy, but to be part of a tandem. Any signing that keeps teams from double teaming Cole is a good move.

It’s just a question about when he will be able to play, and how effective he will be coming off injury.

by ZorkNemesis on Mar 5, 2010 1:00 PM EST reply actions

Yeah, but I think that’s a pretty big question. It’s not like Kampman is a young guy. The Eagles could be getting a great player on the cheap, or the could be getting nothing.

by zfg on Mar 5, 2010 1:05 PM EST up reply actions

That’s assuming he is actually signed, of course.

by zfg on Mar 5, 2010 1:05 PM EST up reply actions

i jumped for joy when i read the title

then i sat right back down when it said it was for a visit

by allmaddenking on Mar 5, 2010 1:01 PM EST reply actions

do it

he’s a perfect fit with this team. still young and a fast healer. should be fine by the time training camp comes around

Alright

Lock him up and get on the path to a safety Rolle or Otagwe I would be ridiculously happy

by Eaglesfan10 on Mar 5, 2010 1:08 PM EST reply actions

Rolle is going to the Giants.

by EREX21 on Mar 5, 2010 1:09 PM EST up reply actions

Actually the leader seems to be the Dolphins.

by JasonB on Mar 5, 2010 1:10 PM EST up reply actions

Good. I’d rather that. I’m just glad Peppers is not going to a division rival. Chicago will still suck with him and Taylor.

by EREX21 on Mar 5, 2010 1:12 PM EST up reply actions

Thats why I thought peppers would rather play in Philly, so then he has a legit chance at winning

by Eaglesfan10 on Mar 5, 2010 1:14 PM EST up reply actions

Still go go either way, but he’s apparently visiting Miami first.

by JasonB on Mar 5, 2010 1:15 PM EST up reply actions

I’d be happy with him, ball hawk and forces fumbles either way its not Demps lol

by Eaglesfan10 on Mar 5, 2010 1:13 PM EST reply actions

Not too excited about it, but I'll take it.

It makes sense if we use him now, maybe only pay him like 9-10 mil, and still draft Carlos Dunap. Stacey Andrews kind of ruined it for me with the injured player thing. I am afraid of this one. But its still an upgrade none the less.

W.e he was comping off injury anyways hopefully they can get Dunlap and just get a safety geez

by Eaglesfan10 on Mar 5, 2010 1:22 PM EST reply actions

Eh. We don't need 4 ex-ACL-tears coming back.

What is the deal with the guy from the vikings?I can’t think of his name right now, but is he UFA or RFA or what?

by philsfreak6 on Mar 5, 2010 1:25 PM EST reply actions

Ray Edwards

is a restricted free agent tendered for a first round pick

Let's get it Birds.

by homestar2281 on Mar 5, 2010 2:35 PM EST up reply actions

Ray Edwards?

believe he was tendered for a third round pick.

by Joewade on Mar 5, 2010 1:26 PM EST reply actions

I doubt they let him go he had a pretty good season

by Eaglesfan10 on Mar 5, 2010 1:30 PM EST up reply actions

yeah I think its a first too

by McMuffin on Mar 5, 2010 1:32 PM EST up reply actions

Why isn’t anyone making moves on restricted free agents? Teams should be jumping on Atogwe, Morrison, Danieal Manning, etc. They are basically free agents.

Bye 36, you will be missed...

by Route36 on Mar 5, 2010 1:37 PM EST reply actions

*They are basically unrestricted free agents because of such low tender levels.

Bye 36, you will be missed...

by Route36 on Mar 5, 2010 1:39 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t get it either I would be jumping out of my seat if I was the eagles for Rolle or Atogwe and Morrison

by Eaglesfan10 on Mar 5, 2010 1:42 PM EST up reply actions

In the early hours of free agency, the guys that are free and clear get all the initial attention. Once that market calms after a couple days, teams that didn’t get what they wanted will turn their focus to the RFA market.

by JimmyK on Mar 5, 2010 1:43 PM EST up reply actions

This blows.

Eagles aren’t getting shit. No Rolle, no Sprolle, no super bowl!

by packimop on Mar 5, 2010 1:37 PM EST reply actions

they weren’t getting a bowl with any of them but yeah this team is going to get nothing it seems.

by EREX21 on Mar 5, 2010 1:38 PM EST up reply actions

those were the names that rhymed. Rolle might have helped us get there.

by packimop on Mar 5, 2010 1:39 PM EST up reply actions

Cuz if u win a game, u get a parade and feel like u win the superbowl.

by philsfreak6 on Mar 5, 2010 1:45 PM EST up reply actions

why would anyone want kyle vandenbosh? he’s whack.

by packimop on Mar 5, 2010 1:46 PM EST up reply actions

Cause they’re giving you millions of dollars? It’s not like the guys the Lions signed are the cream of the crop…

by zfg on Mar 5, 2010 1:53 PM EST up reply actions

I don't want him

Do we really need any more guys coming off ACL tears? Really?

I’m sorry, but at this point that injury is an absolute deal-breaker for the kind of money he’ll get. I’d rather focus on getting an end in the draft.

About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.

by IronHank on Mar 5, 2010 1:46 PM EST reply actions

is he on crutches like stacy andrews was when he signed his deal?

by bula412 on Mar 5, 2010 1:48 PM EST reply actions

Maybe

Eagles told Kampman not to come because Peppers called and said he was willing to take a pay cut to play from the Eagles? Yea? Maybe??

:(

by Team Serbia on Mar 5, 2010 1:48 PM EST reply actions

i was about to say just that. was thinking maybe the deal with the bears had gone sour and they told kampman never mind cause pepp was coming to town

by bula412 on Mar 5, 2010 1:51 PM EST up reply actions

Wishful thinking

That was my first thought too though

GO CUSE, BLUE, AND EAGLES!

by tanman5 on Mar 5, 2010 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

I am completely baffled that most of the top FAs available are going to some of the worst teams in the league. Dansby to miami? Who would ever want to play for the dolphins. Peppers to the bears instead of philly? He obviously only wants the money. Kampman to seattle? Its almost like free agency is one big joke this year. The only player that seems to have any smarts is Rolle because he is visiting the giants. They are a contender but i’d think twice because that defense is just falling apart.

by andyb on Mar 5, 2010 1:54 PM EST reply actions

What’s wrong with Miami?

by JimmyK on Mar 5, 2010 1:58 PM EST up reply actions

Why would you want to play for the Dolphins? Well, Florida has no income tax. You get to live in Miami. They won their division 2 years ago. They have some young talent. They’re paying you millions of dollars. Bill Parcells has proven he can put together winning teams.

by zfg on Mar 5, 2010 1:58 PM EST up reply actions

They are the dolphins. Yeah they won the division 2 years ago. Big deal. We won it a bunch of times the past decade and that didnt mean anything. The AFC is too good for the dolphins to even have a chance. Atleast as long as Brady and Manning are still playing. These players are going to sign with a mediocre/bad teams and basically finish most of their careers there. Thats not how i would want to be remembered. Im not saying this just because they arent signing with the eagles. I just think these players are making terrible career moves. Atleast sign with a team that has a chance.

by andyb on Mar 5, 2010 2:08 PM EST up reply actions

Basically every team has a chance. Turnarounds can be pretty rapid. The Saints were a laughingstock for a long time and they won the super bowl last year. The Cardinals went to the super bowl and damn near won it the year before. Plus, why would you turn down a lot more money to sign with a “good” team? It’s still not a guarantee you’re going to win it all (see: Eagles), and since you’re putting your career on the line every time you play, why not get the most guaranteed money you can?

by zfg on Mar 5, 2010 2:14 PM EST up reply actions

Looks like Taylor's off the market
Filed to ESPN: Chester Taylor reaches agreement with Bears on a four-year, $12.5 million deal that includes $7 million gtd in year one.

-via Adam Schefter

by Bob_Q on Mar 5, 2010 1:55 PM EST reply actions

This doesn't even make sense

Except to say they Bears are going to spend money. They have Matt Forte and Chester Taylor now, two guys who do a lot of the same things. Odd.

I mean it’s all about the guaranteed money anyway, I’m sure he’ll be cut before he plays 6 more years.

Peppers went for the money, have fun Julius when Cutler is leading the league in picks again, Vanden Bust is overrated, and Kampman is injured. I hope we have a hell of a draft because I’m getting nervous about going into this year with the same team (basically) that got destroyed by Dallas…

We needed Peppers

Because Abiamiri sucks a fat one. And Kampman isn’t even visiting. THis sucks

GO CUSE, BLUE, AND EAGLES!

by tanman5 on Mar 5, 2010 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

Well, first off ...

… it’s March. LOTS of time left to change the look of this team. Way too early to be nervous.

The first free agents to sign aren’t always the ones who make the greatest impact. Look no further than last year, Haynesworth or Leonard Weaver?

Second, the talent disparity between Philly and Dallas isn’t such a wide gap that we could never beat them with a team similar to what we have. We certainly need to make a few moves, but we also needed to adjust to what Dallas was doing a little more quickly, play better, etc. … In those games, the Birds got outcoached and outplayed.

In other words, I think they’re going to spend a lot of time looking at those games this offseason and figuring out how not to get killed by that team again. We’ll see ‘em at least twice. I’d like to think Jason Garrett won’t be miles ahead (no pun intended) again in those games.

Didn't we get off to a slow start last year?

And things turned out just fine, offseason-wise.

For a bunch of guys used to watching three-and-outs in the first quarter, you think we’d be used to exhibiting a little patience.

by D3Keith on Mar 5, 2010 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

Last year, I didn’t feel like we had any glaring holes at this time. This year, we most certainly do. Some guys that could have been a nice fit here…

- Julius Peppers – Gone
- Antrel Rolle – Visiting Giants. Dolphins have heavy interest. No reported interest yet from Philly.
- Chester Taylor – Gone
- Gary Brackett – Gone
- Kyle Vander Bosch – Gone

The menu is thinning out, and there’s virtually no reported progress on our end so far. Personally, I’m a little irritated.

by JimmyK on Mar 5, 2010 3:01 PM EST up reply actions

I think we have to make plays for some guys. We have too many holes that can’t all be filled with rookies.

I'll grant you this ...

Pretty true. I’m just gonna liken it to a bad first drive. It sucks, it sets a crappy tone for sure, but there’s a lot of game left.

I was kinda hoping the Kampman to Philly thing

was a rumor to get Julius to stop playing games trying to pit Chicago against us … in other words if he really wants to play for us, he’d better act fast.

I wish that wouldn’t have been debunked so quickly.
