Philadelphia Eagles agree to record deal with Leonard Weaver

NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora is reporting that the Eagles have agreed to a 3 year, $10+ million deal with Leonard Weaver. The deal would be the largest for a fullback in NFL history. He also reports that more than half of the deal is guaranteed.

Obviously great news as the Eagles lock up the guy who turned out to be their best free agent signing of last year and a big contributor to their offense. Weaver posted career highs in rushing yards and TDs en route to his first pro bowl and first team all pro selection.

[Update by JasonB, 03/05/10 9:52 AM EST ] Adam Caplan has specific contract details.

Eagles and Leonard Weaver reached 3-year, $11 million deal, $6.5 million guaranteed source said. Beats Greg Jones' deal 2 years ago.

ALRIGHT

Great move, I’m so glad to see him back. Its an all around FB, and so useful: blocking, running, catching, a great leader.

Love it!

Reid- Best Coach in Eagles History
McNabb- Best QB in Eagles History

This is the year

Hooray!

One less guy to worry about next year.

by JimmyK on Mar 5, 2010 9:46 AM EST reply actions

Great ! We need his veteran leadership, especially if McRibb gets traded. My only complaint is “only 3 years?” But hey I’ll take it :)

by jufr18 on Mar 5, 2010 9:49 AM EST reply actions

Considering he’s been in the league longer than almost all of our Offensive weapons ( if Mcnabb is gone ) yes, leadership

by jufr18 on Mar 5, 2010 9:58 AM EST up reply actions

Length of service does not automatically bestow leadership on a player any more than skill does. Weaver may be a good leader, but the fact that he’s been in the league a few years is a poor supporting argument.

by Cormican on Mar 5, 2010 10:32 AM EST up reply actions

I can only remember one dumb play against SF

Or really it wasn’t a play, it was between plays.

I’m thriled he was resigned, but this is the first I’ve ever heard mentioned of his leadership.

by AZ Eagle on Mar 5, 2010 10:51 AM EST up reply actions

Congrats

Does this count as our first free agency signing? He was tendered and technically RFA by missing the midnight deadline..

by Sparki on Mar 5, 2010 9:51 AM EST reply actions

Link?

(I believe it…I just want to send the link to some friends who blasting the FO for not signing Weaver.)

by BrianS on Mar 5, 2010 9:53 AM EST reply actions

Strange that that is the most money ever given to a fullback. It really doesn’t seem like that much, but maybe that’s because Weaver is more like LeRon McClain that a traditional fullback. He earned the money.

by ZorkNemesis on Mar 5, 2010 9:55 AM EST reply actions

Theres some good news in what looks to be a mediocre offseason so far.

by andyb on Mar 5, 2010 9:56 AM EST reply actions

It’s only been 10 hours… in what has been called the best free agency market ever, and only a few have been signed as of now… Sure there seems to be little rush among Eagle mgmt, but it’s just beginning… who knows.

by Sparki on Mar 5, 2010 9:58 AM EST up reply actions

The best?

I’ve heard it called it the worst free agency market, but not the best…

by JasonB on Mar 5, 2010 9:59 AM EST up reply actions

Worst?

Lots of names out there…

by Sparki on Mar 5, 2010 9:59 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah lots of names but not many good players. If i had heard that atleast a few visits were scheduled, Id be more optimistic but as of right now, it doesnt look like the eagles are seriously considering any top FA. Im still trying to see what happend to the Kampman to philly rumor though.

by andyb on Mar 5, 2010 10:02 AM EST up reply actions

a week ago it was vanden bosch to philly…doesn’t seem to be much to these rumors.

by eagleyosh on Mar 5, 2010 10:04 AM EST up reply actions

Really? I always heard it was going to be Vanden Bosch to Detroit because of Jim Schwartz. The thing I kept hearing was Peppers to Redskins or Philly, because they were going to be the most willing to pay him. I seriously have no idea where the Bears came from.

Let the beasting begin.

by TransplantedFan on Mar 5, 2010 10:25 AM EST up reply actions

lovie is getting fired if he doesn’t field a good team. I’m from chicago, and most of the fans are pissed he wasn’t fired already.

by eagleyosh on Mar 5, 2010 10:47 AM EST up reply actions

key caveat- if it were 2006. but it’s not 2006, so this FA market is not the best ever.

by eagleyosh on Mar 5, 2010 10:05 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, the names are out there, but signing LaDainian Tomlinson now is not what signing LaDainian Tomlinson would have been like 4 years ago. Same with Westbrook and a whole host of others.

If you are going by what is left in the tank of the players on the market right now, there is Peppers and then there is a whole bunch of other guys average or above average with no other name leaping off the page.

Proudly supporting a Flyers team with "no honor".

Name a Eagles FB in recent memory that can do what Weaver does, rush the ball effectively, and catch passes and get YAC on a consistent basis. He’s worth the $$

by jufr18 on Mar 5, 2010 9:57 AM EST reply actions

Almost nailed it...

I said 4 years, $14.8M ($3.7M/season), and he got 3 years, $11M ($3.7M, rounded to the nearest 0.1). Just had the number of years wrong…

Outfuckingstanding!!!!

But now, he better be a pro bowl fullback for all 3 of these years, if he is the highest paid FB ever. Welcome to the family somewhat long term Weaver. Great to have you for sure.

question

One of my friends says it is the second highest fb contract next to mike alstott’s? Can anyone either confirm or deny this remark?

by PhilsForever on Mar 5, 2010 3:53 PM EST reply actions

Highly doubt that...

If Alstott were in his prime in 2010, he’d get a higher contract now, but I’d be extremely surprised if he ever got a contract worth $3.7M per year in the late 90’s-early aughts.

by JimmyK on Mar 5, 2010 4:05 PM EST up reply actions

Weaver does an excellent job in a rare role

He plays fullback but is more than a blocking back like, for example, Tony Richardson. He reminds me of Tom Rathman, in that he can run and get some serious yardage and also be a good backfield receiver as well (think of the Atlanta game). The way football is going now, less teams are carrying an FB, or if they are, they will just have him block while 1 or 2 halfbacks get all the carries and yardage. Even in short yardage situations and in the red zone they often don’t give the ball to the fullback anymore. Personally I like versatility on offense, and Weaver deffinitely helps provide that.
Translated into bleacher-speak: Yay, you paid the man! Now run the ball!
