Around SBN: Events Cause Mariners To Lose To Rangers

The Chicago Bears have extended free agent Julius Peppers an impressive contract offer, his agent Carl Carey told Carolina Growl moments ago. Carey said he and Peppers will meet with members of the Bears front office later today in Chicago. Carey said at this point it’s the only trip he has set up, but added that the Philadelphia Eagles are "very interested" and Peppers will take a visit there if things don’t work out with Chicago. Contrary to some reports, Carey also said the Washington Redskins have not pulled out and remain interested in Peppers, too.

Apparently Peppers will visit Philly if things don't work out in Chicago. Don't hold your breath.

I don't know

I know a lot of guys in here are hot for Peppers. For me it’s one of those deals where if we sign him I would be happy, but if we didn’t I’d be just as happy. He surely would fill a need but there are negatives to go along with the positives.

It sounds like posturing to get more money out of Chicago. If Peppers’ agent really felt like the Eagles/Redskins were going to match the Bears, then they would have lined up those visits to Philly and Washington last night, instead of saying “We MIGHT visit those teams, IF you don’t pay us what we’re looking for.” Pure agent talk.

I would be just happy with Kampan or Edwards. Don’t get me wrong, Peppers lined up opposite Cole would be ridiculous but I think if they draft a guy like Bowman from PSU who can be a DE/LB hybrid, they might be just as well off.

9 out of 10 times things will work out. Big name free agents usually sign with the team their visiting first. The agent is just trying to get the eagles or redskins to make a better offer. More than likely were going to hear that peppers signed with the bears.

WTH

His agent is a dunce w/ tunnel vision… only meeting with other teams if things don’t work out w/ Chicago. I just don’t understand that mentality. Sure talk to Chicago first as they called first, but look around a bit.. otherwise all Chicago has to do is make an offer that’s good enough instead of one that’s better. Is it that he wants/loves Chicago that much?

There’s a risk to the player if they leave without signing. If Peppers leaves Chicago to talk to other teams, the Bears could theoretically just look at other DE’s and pull the offer… And then maybe he’s getting less money elsewhere – It happens every year.

It’s no different than when Asante Samuel came here. Philly was his first and only visit.

I get the feeling that is his first visit was to Philly

You’d be saying his agent is an idiot to leave, he can get a championship here. If he leaves the Eagles will just sign Kyle Vandenbosch and Peppers will get stuck in Tampa for less money…

I would prefer the Eagles don’t sign Peppers, as I don’t see him handling the demands in Philly (or Chicago, for that matter) well. But if we sign him, I have little doubt McDermot will do some interesting things with his and Cole’s athleticism.

It’s posturing. Peppers is after money more than a title. Have fun Julius watching Cutler lead the league in picks again…

From McClane on twitter
Just spoke to Peppers’ agent, Carl Carey. Said Peppers will visit #Eagles if Bears can’t get deal done. Eagles have thrown a number at them

It does sound like posturing

and as bad as I’d like Peppers, I can probably be pretty quickly convinced to move on without him.

This agent sounds concerned with milking the most money out of a team rather than putting his client in position to win a championship. It’s certainly possible that’s what his client has told him to do, although I’d find that to be incredibly short-sighted on the part of the player.

Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome

Peppers is his only client, so I would agree.
