Report: Disagreement among Eagles brass on McNabb trade

Fox29 has an interesting tidbit this morning on the workings of the Eagles front office. They claim that higher ups in the Eagles front office want to trade Donovan McNabb, but Andy Reid is blocking the idea.

we're also being told that trading McNabb is not going to be easy because internally the Eagles' brass wants to move him but Andy Reid does not.

As Andy, Joe Banner, & Howie Roseman have said on multiple occasions this offseason, this is Andy's decision. He has final say... So if that is in fact true, expect McNabb to be back next year.

Hype

As much as I would like McNabb to stay, this is purely a hype move to increase trade offers.
He’s gone if a 1 and something hits the table.

by jho on Mar 5, 2010 9:25 AM EST reply actions

Posted this on the fanpost about this topic, but here's my half-baked theory again...

Fox 29 news isn’t breaking any news here. This wreaks of a "leak with a purpose" directly from the Eagles, which… oh by the way… just so happened to occur the first day of free agency. It’s win-win-win all over the place for the Eagles…

- It tells teams that it’ll take a lot to convince Reid to trade McNabb, while at the same time sending the unsaid message that others in the organization are open to listening to offers.
- Reid looks like the good guy here in the eyes of McNabb, because he’s standing by his QB. If in end McNabb winds up staying with the Eagles, he’ll remember that Reid was in his corner and can feel good about his working relationship with his coach.
- The "brass" goes conveniently unnamed, of course.

Playing the game, folks. That’s all this is.

by JimmyK on Mar 5, 2010 9:25 AM EST reply actions

Look, we want to trade McNabb but this Reid guy… he’s crazy. He’s refusing to come out of his office! He says he won’t trade McNabb! He loves the guy and doesn’t want to see him go!!

Listen, offer us a first round pick. Maybe that will get Andy to open up his door just to talk… If you don’t hear from me, tell my wife I love her.

I'm gonna be that guy

and say I told you so. Andy is married to this dude, he seems like he believes in him more than anyone (and I’m even willing to argue the Baltimore benching wasn’t a loss in confidence, but maybe some other time).

Obviously it’s not over, and there’s no telling if this is the right move … depending on what the offers to “move him” are.

But I think if this is in fact the case, it’s actually good for the Eagles in the sense that the organization has taken a hit for supposedly being all business and not standing up for players, and here’s the coach going to bat for a guy and overruling the suits. (nevermind that coach/personnel guy usually = danger)

We rarely doubt Reid on OL, and it’s probably fair to say he knows his QBs too. If it’s true — and I’m not above suspecting they leaked this — it seems like a good thing for The Eagles either way.

IF Dmac is not gonna be resigned after this year he needs to be traded while he still has some value. I too though do agree that this is a pure “PR leak” to get other teams to say " wow if we are interested we better not send any lowball offers"

by jufr18 on Mar 5, 2010 9:29 AM EST reply actions

I'm not sure what to believe

But if this is true, all that it means is that it will take one hell of an offer for McNabb to be gone, which decreases the likelihood of it happening. It doesn’t mean that is happening, though.

That’s not to say that the FO doesn’t have a history of letting stuff leak out, and then heading in a different direction. I’ll just stick with let’s wait and see for now.

If they are just "playing the game"

I like it.

I have a hard time believing Andy really wants to part with Donovan; I think he really believes he’s his best shot at winning a SB.

But if it is just game, it doesn’t hurt us in any way. We’re either gonna get a fat offer or we’re gonna have more than 1 good QB again (which is fine for those of us not in a rush to run McNabb out of town)

I appreciate Dmac and ALL that hes done but..
I think he really believes he’s his best shot at winning a SB.

I don’t know about that. Well, anymore at least! LAST season yes, this coming season, don’t know about that. And for those who thought it was our Oline/Defenses fault..If we dont address these in the draft (and get it RIGHT), I could be another similar showing as this past season!!

For the record..I do NOT believe that it was just the Oline/Defense that screwed us last season

I’m not interested in rehashing that debate again as far as what I think. I’m just gonna sit back and see what happens on the QB front. None of the outcomes are really bad, in my mind.

When has FOX29 ever had a scoop on anything?

by ZorkNemesis on Mar 5, 2010 9:33 AM EST reply actions

I was thinking the same thing...

They’ve really never been a major player on the local sports reporting scene.

by JasonB on Mar 5, 2010 9:34 AM EST up reply actions

Their source might be some random kid on Twitter for all we know. Like when all those papers reported news about Chris Henry based on a fake unverified Twitter account.

If it comes from people with actual knowledge and connections, then it would get intriguing. I certainly wouldn’t say that the Eagles have had NO discussions about McNabb. At the same time, I think the realities of the lockout, the CBA, market value, etc, are coloring the whole situation, and not a pretty color.

by ZorkNemesis on Mar 5, 2010 9:39 AM EST up reply actions

I got a little skeptical too the more I thought about it

Not just the Fox part, but how anyone could find that out without a major leak from inside. And if the Eagles are so disorganized that they’re not leaking this on purpose, then we’re in bigger trouble than we thought.

The good news is only 1 team has to bite …

I think Andy sees the value in McNabb,

and knows he can do well in a trade. But by trading him, you are making an opponent stronger ie Min or AZ. But if we keep McNabb (even on the bench!!!), we make our odds better or winning a Superbowl better, just because now Min and AZ have to trot backups out there next year. Other than he Saints, we are the NEXT best team in the NFC.

In Kolb we trust

Unless they blow the pick. How’s Trevor Laws doing? Reggie Brown? Matt McCoy? LJ Smith?

They’ve gotten better but it’s still a crapshoot.

by ZorkNemesis on Mar 5, 2010 9:56 AM EST up reply actions

You say Trevor Laws, Reggie Brown, Matt McCoy, LJ Smith, all 2nd rounders.

The other side of that is DeSean Jackson, LeSean McCoy, Sheldon Brown, Kevin Kolb, Brian Dawkins, etc, all also 2nd rounders.

Some people say draft picks are like lottery tickets, which I totally disagree with since a lottery ticket implies an extremely low success rate. I’d say they’re more like Community Chest cards in Monopoly, in that some cards are great (“Advance to Boardwalk”), some are meh (“You win $20 in a beauty pageant”), and some are bad (“Pay poor tax of $15”). If you trade McNabb, you get a card. If you lose him at the end of next season, it’s like skipping a turn.

Packers = meh

I’m not quite as big a fan of theirs as most people seem to be, but we’re definitely behind the other three.

I don’t think the gap is so big it can’t be made up this offseason though. Except for the Saints … when Drew Brees is on, they’re gonna be hard to beat for a while, as long as their defense is above average.

Right… It’s certainly debatable between the Eagles and Packers. I wouldn’t put up much of an argument if someone thought the Eagles were better. They have some really nice talent, so do we.

It’s also worth noting that there are a few teams trailing us that really aren’t too far behind… Giants, Falcons, Panthers, etc.

We have work to do this offseason.

But by trading him, you are making an opponent stronger ie Min or AZ.

Yeah but, if we trade him you must not think that he can lead us to a Super Bowl. So in that case wouldn’t you want to “plant” him on another team so they don’t win?

I honestly don’t think that he is consistent enough to lead any team to a SB. Not now at least. I don’t care where he goes. That statement may come back to bite me in the ass, but so be it.

I'm a Cowgirls Cockroach Troll - Beware

by MRPH on Mar 5, 2010 9:51 AM EST up reply actions

Take winning the Super Bowl out of it. What if McNabb faces the Eagles during the season and beats them, and that win knocks the Eagles out of the playoffs? What if McNabb doesn’t reach the Super Bowl, but his team faces the Eagles in the playoffs, and knocks the Eagles out? Will the trade have been worth it then?

No need to deal in extremes. The only way to keep Donovan McNabb from winning is to put him in an unwinnable situation such as Buffalo or Cleveland, and that would be just plain cruel and honestly, probably not very good PR, to essentially force someone’s retirement in that way.

He’ll either play for us or he’ll play in the AFC. Any other situation comes with significant circumstances.

by ZorkNemesis on Mar 5, 2010 10:00 AM EST up reply actions

My point

If we think that trading McNabb makes us better and are comfortable with Kolb, we shouldn’t worry about what team he goes to. We should have the confidence that we can beat him.

Could McNabb beat us somewhere down the line? Sure. I’m willing to take that chance if it means that the Eagles are a better team.

I disagree!!!

If you say that if we trade McNabb to Arizona or minn then that makes them better…. Then what you’re really saying he is better than farve or Warner. Both minny and Arizona have reached their peak. I don’t know if I’m alone here but I wouldn’t mind playing against McNabb for the same reason I want him traded (he is inaccurate and overrated)

by FLAeagle on Mar 5, 2010 9:44 AM EST reply actions

Maybe

But if they did…Both the Cards and Viks RUN THE BALL a lot more than us. The keep the pressure off their QB by RUNNING the ball. Now, towards the end of that season, the Viks were throwing it more. Brett was being Brett. But becuz of there DEFENSE, they and Brett, could risk more chances! The Cards and Viks fit Dmacs strengths more, than the Birds as those teams have a real threat in the run game. Most likely Dmac would NOT be asked to throw 60 times a game!!

JUST TRADE THE BUM ALREADY!!!! Im so tired of all the McNabb rumors. Its in the teams best interest to look longterm and start Kolb this year. I always supported McNabb so please dont call me a hater. I just care more about this team than i do McNabbs feelings. Unless we make big moves in FA like in 2004, we more than likely wont make it to the superbowl. It is pointless to keep McNabb another year unless we sign a player like peppers and draft a good FS and LB. I just feel it will be pointless to watch the eagles next year with McNabb at QB because will all know what will happen.

by andyb on Mar 5, 2010 9:55 AM EST reply actions   1 recs

I kinda agree there!

Knowing we need significant help at DE and the Safety position..and some help at LB! I know its the deepest defensive draft in years, but if we rely on the draft and the players dont pan out in their FIRST year..then keeping Dmac was all for not. I mean I know the Giants did it, winning with a bunch of ROOKIE defensive players a couple of years ago, but that whole Superbowl was filled with crazy luck!! If we bring back Dmac (telling us that the Birds think he will bring us a Superbowl this coming season), and rely on rookie defensive players to step up an fill what we lacked last season..I dont know if that is worth losing the chance to add MORE potential draft picks and giving us the ability to be able to trade for vet impact players, if needed down the road. Like how we got Spoon. We move forward with Dmac and a bunch of rookie defensive players..we will need a lot of football luck!

i’m with FLAeagle on this one. if mcabb went to minny or arizona, they would be automatic super bowl contenders. not saying they are going to win, but they will be contenders. as for the birds, kevin kolb would have to go through some growing pains. we’d probably be right around .500 next year with kolb under center. to expect more than that is lunacy. he’s started 2 games in his life. i doubt he will take us to the playoffs. matt ryan, joe flacco, and mark sanchez all went to the playoffs young, but that was due more to their running games and defenses. kolb will not have that luxury as our defense is in shambles and our running game has been reported missing.

by bula412 on Mar 5, 2010 11:02 AM EST up reply actions

fyi….i’m not trying to justify keeping mcnabb, just speaking the truth

by bula412 on Mar 5, 2010 11:03 AM EST up reply actions

Ok FLAeagle, lets not trade Mcnabb. We can use him 1 more year, not make it to the superbowl, have him walk and get no value from him. Meanwhile Kolb will want to walk because we wont give him a chance to play even though he is ready. There is no way you can justify keeping him for one more year. I always supported McNabb and i know he’s a good qb but now is the perfect time to part ways. If he goes to another team and does great then good for him. I would applaud his success with another team as long as it wasnt against us.

by andyb on Mar 5, 2010 11:01 AM EST up reply actions

i’ve said to my friends all along that the Eagles are going to disappoint this offseason. They’re going to end up with 3 one year contracts at QB, and will be lucky if we can extend Kolb after the season is over. If we lose McNabb, Kolb, OR Vick for nothing, it will be a monumental disaster. Either recommit to McNabb long term (PLEASE DON’T) or give Kolb an extension and trade McNabb (keeping Vick) and use a roughly 60 to 70% Kolb next year and let Vick get in on plays more often (three or four times a series on long drives) to see what you’ve got. If we get no picks back for any of them i’m going to be pissed. Why sign Reed to this extension when you know he’s just going to want to keep McChoke?

by packimop on Mar 5, 2010 11:42 AM EST reply actions

Remember: Reid benched McNabb and Eagles paid a "Financial Apology"

Back when the benching occurred Reid was the bad guy in McNabb’s eyes AND McNabb got a financial apology of millions of dollars from the front office. With that in mind this does not make sense…they are probably posturing to trade McNabb.
Either way, whoever is the QB next year, its going to be a very tough schedule with many less wins. Adios #5.

There are some morons talking

First and foremost, just shut up with the “I hope we trade McNabb so y’all can see what we could have had” bs. It makes you look like the opposite of an Eagles fan. Yes it’s annoying when idiots call him “McChoke” or insinuate that the Eagles suck because of him, but you look equally bad.

Keep your emotions under control people. Whether you like it or not, McNabb has had a lot of success with the Eagles and should continue to do so if he stays. On the other side, whether you like it or not, Kolb is a good prospect, and if McNabb leaves, we are far from “fucked”
