Hobbs, Gocong sign 1-year deals

I honestly didn't want to do a fanpost for this, but I got the text from the Eagles and waited, like, 45 seconds and there was still no reaction here!

My guess is the Gocong move gets no love, although it's really just the Eagles covering their bases if they can't/don't draft an LB or someone is not as healthy as they hoped. Obviously nobody was interested in giving up a pick for him. And it doesn't mean he's the starter or won't be traded to the Browns later.

As for Hobbs, I really like bringing him back. He's a very good kick returner (as we saw in the Dallas game, right Moises?) and a depth corner. I wouldn't want to have to start that guy all year, but we could do way worse if someone has to fill in for a portion of a game or several games. With Brown, Samuel, Hobbs and Hanson, we don't NEED to come out of this draft with a cornerback, but if we did it would be good.

Among RFAs ...

… we’ve now signed Weaver and Avant to long-term extensions and Jordan, Gocong and Hobbs to 1-year deals/tenders, correct?

Hey, I wasn't looking to win

I was looking for a Route36 post to comment on.

Plus, I probably started mine first, but I had to think up something halfway interesting to get over the 75-word threshold.

Incorrect. He would have to sign his tender before the Eagles could trade him, so this is a step in the right direction. The Browns were reported to have significant interest in him. Personally, I’d be absolutely thrilled to get a 4 in return for Gocong.

Yeah, I’d happily take a 4th rounder for him as well, but it’s not the worst thing in the world if he spends another season here. He’s not that bad.

Agreed. When he wasn’t injured or attempting to play MLB, he really wasn’t terrible. Not necessarily starting caliber, but you could do much worse as a backup.

by zfg on Mar 30, 2010 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions

He started in ‘08 and I really can’t complain about how that defense performed. Although he takes much of the blame for the way TEs shredded us that year. Still, he wasn’t a liability.

Hobbs is

coming off a pretty serious injury. We need to draft a CB for depth and for the future. Samuels and Brown are getting older.

We don't NEED to draft one for depth

It would be nice, but the four guys we have could get us through a season, especially if Marlin Jackson, Macho and Demps (all one-time corners who might be able to cover WRs in a pinch) all make the roster.

I totally agree we could use a future prospect there, but I don’t see it as a NEED yet … we could put it off til next year if the draft doesn’t fall our way.

Disagree. We’re one CB injury away from disaster. I’m not confident in any of our backups to start. The sooner we draft another good CB the better.

You and I ...

… have had this same exact discussing once before. And agreed to disagree then.

Certainly I wouldn’t be thrilled with a season-ending injury to Sheldon Brown or Asante Samuel … but I would hate it just as much if we had a rookie corner backing them up, so if your point is you want our starters to start, then I agree to agree.

It’s not that I want our starters to start. I want their replacements developing ASAP.

I don't know...

Hobbs was pretty serviceable on a 16-0 New England team. We could duplicate that here if Sheldon goes down, with our own Asante/Hobbs tandem.

Although, I agree we should at least draft one cornerback high in the draft this year to be Sheldon’s future replacement. Following year can be Samuel’s.

mmmmm

no compliment is as backhanded as serviceable

Let's get it Birds.

by homestar2281 on Mar 30, 2010 5:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah ...

… New England’s defense puts less pressure on its cornerbacks, but Hobbs didn’t exactly sink that ship. And Hanson definitely ruined the second half of his season last year, but he can contribute.

If those are the weak links of our defense, then our defense is pretty freakin good.

If they trade Brown (which looks increasingly likely), they will need to draft a CB in the 1st or 2nd round. Dobbs/Jackson are both coming off serious injuries and you won’t know what you have with either guy until well into trading camp.

Hanson played well in ‘08 and earlier last year until the suspension. After his ’suspension’ he struggled. You have to wonder if some of those struggles might not have been substance-related. Frankly, I thought he might be one of the guys they would cut this offseason to get out from the contract he signed last year.

by MG77 on Mar 30, 2010 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed. Hanson was a dud after he got off his suspension and you have to wonder if some of that wasn’t at least related to what he was taking. Jackson is “what you get out of his is bonus” type players. He might start and just as easily might not play another down in the NFL again. Even with Hobbs, you don’t know what he will look like coming off a serious injury too.

by MG77 on Mar 30, 2010 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Hopefully this means Gocong can get traded for a 3rd or 4th.

Hobbs was an underrated loss last year we could of really used him down the stretch with the suspension to Hanson and the injury to Sheldon. We also missed him on KR

a 3rd? ur crazy

i wouldnt even give a 5th for him hes not really good

by thegreatginzo on Mar 30, 2010 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions

What should happen is

trade Gocong for a 4th. Cut Hanson. Trade McNabb for a 2nd. This should how the draft goes. 1st Kyle Wilson/CB 2nd Carlos Dunlap/DE 2nd Daryl WashingtonLB 3 Nate Allen/S 3rd John Jerry/G 4th Tony Pike/QB 6th Mike Williams/WR 7th Jeffery Fitzgerald / DE 7th John Estees/C Were gonna have a couple undrafted lineman a couple of linebackers and tight ends and one or teo runningbacks tell me what u think

by philly phils on Mar 30, 2010 9:48 PM EDT reply actions

Why would we cut Hanson?

by ieatcrayons on Mar 31, 2010 2:38 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree. Hanson plays quite well as the nickel corner. Cutting him would make no sense.

agreed happy to see hobbs back

gocong i can do w/o tho hes a good tackler but hes bad incoverage and pretty slow

by thegreatginzo on Mar 30, 2010 10:27 PM EDT reply actions

I love it...

Hobbs is a great return man and he is good backup who can step in… I’m very happy we retained him

Gocong’s got potential just not as a LB… Move him to DE and let him F.S.U.

thats Cobb on Kolb crime if you ask me... as said by yophillybro
