Here are some notes from the combine on some of the players the Eagles may draft
Taylor Mays- At one point, NFL Network said he ran a 4.24 40(would of been the fastest since Chris Johnson's time of 2008) the official time for Mays was 4.43, but most scouts said he ran more like a 4.30. He also posted a 41-inch, which was third amoung defensive backs and second in safeties only to Eric Berry. at 6-3, 230 he has excellent size for a safety and has proven himself to be even more athletic then anticipated. The biggest knock on him by NFL scouts his backpedaling is very slow. He isn't great in man coverage either but he is a hard worker and benefit from a great defensive backs coach(like Dirk Jauron) to coach him up. He keeps moving up and sliding down in the experts mock drafts so it is unlcear if he will still be available at our 24th pick.
Chris Cook- The future is not bright right now for the Eagles at cornerback. Sheldon Brown and Asante Samuel will both be 30+ next year and Joselio Hanson and Ellis Hobbs are not their future replacements. With talent available in this year's draft, it would be the perfect year to have a draft like we did in 2002 when we drafted Lito Shepperd and Sheldon Brown. Chris Cook is a guy who really impressed at this year's combine. He has great size at 6-2, 212. What really impressed me is athleticsm. He ran a 4.46 40, second amoung all corners. Cook may be the most physical corner in this year's draft and also has the versatility to move to free safety if needed. He is also great at jamming recievers at the line of scrimmage.
Patrick Robinson- Robinson is one of the top corners in the draft and is projected to be drafted late in the first round making him a very likely first round choice for us. He has good size at 5-11 and 190 pounds and posted solid numbers at the combine. He is above average against the run but below average in jamming wideouts. He probably isn't the ideal choice for a team looking for a guy ready to start right away but he should compete for a nickelback spot and become the starter in another year or two.
Navarro Bowman- Probably the guy most experts have the Eagles drafting in the first round going into the combine, but may not be drafted by anybody in the first round after a dissapointing 4.72 40 at the combine. Still has great athletic ability and natural instincts for an outside linebacker. Bowman gets bullied by blockers at times and has had off the field issues as well as injury problems in college. Could be a good fit as a weakside linebacker for our defense but i'd rather stick with Fokou.
Toby Gerhart- There are alot of options in free agency at running back with guys like Chester Taylor, Thomas Jones and Willie Parker but Gerhart is a cheaper alternative with alot of potential. Gerhart is powerful at 6-0 231, but also runs well as he proved in the combine with his 4.53 40. Though he isn't the big play threat like a Spiller or Best, he is a nice change of pace back for McCoy. Gerhart is great at fighting for extra yards and has alot of heart. Not only would he be great in the red zone, he has the type of work ethic and personality to be a fan favorite for years to come in Philly.
