Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Taylor Mays' 4.43 forty time is flawed. NFL Network proves that he finished faster than Trindon Holiday who was given an official time of 4.34. What gives?

Anybody have an explanation?

I'm beginning to rethink drafting this guy...

Dick Jauron was regarded as one of the best secondary coaches in the league before he became a head coach. He transformed Jairus Byrd who was a CB coming out of college into a FS that had 9 picks his rookie year last season. If he can improve Mays’ negative qualities, we could have an amazing player. High risk-Higher reward. Seriously, 6’3 220 running what seems to be a 4.3? That is unheard of.

From SI.com
During drills, Mays was in poor form. As fast as he was moving forwards, Mays was terribly slow moving in reverse. It was similar to his performance at the Senior Bowl in January. Mays looked uncomfortable backpedaling during drills and one scout called his defensive back fundamentals “just bad.” When asked to change direction, Mays would come to a complete stop then start up again. The contrast between Mays and players such as Earl Thomas and T.J. Ward, who lost little momentum changing direction, was striking.

I know, I know. He needs a lot of work. He said Pete Carroll just told him to “hit people”. I don’t think he was really coached coverage all that much. He was a 4 year starter and actually returned to school for his senior season on the request of Caroll. Jumped from 53 tackles/ 0 INT to 88 tackles/ 1 INT. That shows he is willing to get better.

Maybe Dick can coach him up!

I'm with you

I think his flaws are coachable, and we have the coaches to do it

Honestly

If Taylor would have run a 4.5 forty yard dash, would you still be saying the same thing?

by macjack09 on Mar 3, 2010 2:29 PM EST up reply actions

No, I wouldn’t. I think its his speed that will help him recover quickly if he gets beat. I don’t know. If he masters the fundamentals due to NFL coaching, he is going to be great. If not, he will be average at best. We shall see.

It didn’t help him recover quickly in college. It doesn’t get any slower in the NFL. I’m not saying he can’t be good, I’m saying I wouldn’t bank a 1st rounder on it.

by macjack09 on Mar 3, 2010 4:43 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t doubt his athletic ability, I don’t doubt his straight line speed. But its more than just his coverage problems. He is not smooth laterally which is far more important than a straight line. It not just his coverage that needs work, his angling is poor because he does not know how to fluidly turn his hips. The only reason his stats jumped was because he had to take on a bigger role. His coaching on his coverage has far more to work to on than just reads. He has to learn to turn his hips, he has to learn to notice angles on the fly, he has to learn to keep his hips under him until he makes a correct read, he has to stop making anticipations and learn to read and react, and he has to learn to play the ball instead of the receiver. That’s a lot of work for a guy who is suppose to be a 1st round draft pick.

Pretty much all teams time their own 40s. So I don’t think this will really matter at all.

Teams take their own 40 times so they can compare it with the pro day. That way you have two hand timed measurements rather than one electronic(like the combine releases) and one hand timed.

by JasonB on Mar 3, 2010 10:13 AM EST reply actions

Simple

40 times are determined by the BCS using a complex formula including the player’s college team’s weighted average strength of schedule, height, weight, shoe size and projected jersey sales revenue for their first year in the league.

Thats BS

no one really knows how the BCS decides these things

As impressed as I am by his speed, I still don’t want him. I know that coaches’ egos lead them to believe that “I know he doesn’t have the skill, but he has the athleticism, I can teach him the skill!”, but that fails more often than it succeeds.

His best parallel in the NFL, based on film study (as opposed to athleticism), is Roy Williams. And I don’t think any Eagles fan would want to see a Roy Williams-type in our defensive backfield.

He has the skill and athleticism, he just needs the brains to go with it

child please

So is the ideal safety

Myron Rolle’s brain in Taylor Mays’ body?
Photoshop it, somebody

by Rabbit T on Mar 3, 2010 12:44 PM EST up reply actions

well, I guess even in photoshop

wouldn’t it still just look like Mays?

He has the skill

I don’t think this is true if you watch the tape Mays only really makes plays because he is more athletic then most of the guys he played against. This won’t be the case in the NFL and he will be exposed.

basically, if he can be taught to back pedal faster i think he will be very very successful in the nfl

but you are right, he wont have that advantage in the nfl

child please

by worldphuckinchamps on Mar 3, 2010 10:01 PM EST up reply actions

backpedal? how about angles towards defenders (he’s got no concept of this because he was always faster then everyone) …. what about reading routes instead of just playing the run?

I could be wrong and he could be the best safety to ever play the game … but I’m willing to bet this doesn’t go down like that.

agreed

if we draft this kid (which would demand too high of a pick) i wouldnt feel comfortable starting him right away which is what we need … we need someone right away …. sign rolle and if this kid drops to the second pick him up and let him be the heir to mikell
