Teams secretly interested in McNabb
Because it was the weekend and its slowed down here but I still work, I ended up reading a lot of the McNabb garbage from elsewhere. And on ProFootballTalk.com I saw something that was actually fairly interesting. Surprised there wasn't more reaction to it, but maybe I missed it or maybe you guys have lives:
Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Eagles are receiving offers from teams that have not been identified publicly at the request of the teams making the offers. This is happening for two reasons: (1) some of the teams have incumbent starting quarterbacks who would be confused, to say the least, if they learned that McNabb could be joining the club; and (2) none of the teams want fans or the media to know that they are courting McNabb, in the event that they fail to land him.
This doesn't explain the fact that the Bills, Rams, and Raiders have been named as potential trade partners. According to the source, however, the Eagles have disclosed to no one the names of the teams with whom they are or aren't talking.
This makes plenty of sense; not only are GMs/agents lying to and through the media at this point to boost their own interests, but I bet teams make inquiries on the low all the time.
Feel free to take the thread off on that tangent, but what I thought would be fun is speculating on which teams with incumbents were making the calls, and what the fallout would be. Here's a few not-that-well-thought-out ones:
--> Bears get McNabb; trade Cutler to Redskins (problem is, Denver has the picks Chicago would need to give to make it happen. We'll take Peppers off your hands if you eat half his guaranteed money!)
--> Cardinals trade for McNabb, tell Leinart to be a father to his child. (The Cards and Leinart are in situation similar to us and Kolb. You draft a guy and he's stuck behind and older better guy. Seems silly to hold a guy & develop him for so long, then when you need a starter not to go to the guy who's been in your system. Unless he sucks)
--> Pittsburgh trades for McNabb; Big Ben goes to jail.

Hmmm. the Pittsburg one doesn't sound so far fetched....
After all, I just read an article on ESPN that said Big Ben will not be attending the team’s offseason training program. Besides, Pitt might be looking at Mcnabb as a reasurance in case Ben is convicted, and is guilty. In that case, it would be a wise move by the Steelers

Only thing is the timing. I have no idea if they’ll know anything before the draft.

I think that the only QB that I’d legitimately believe could be dealt to the Steelers is Vick, the only ‘semi-decent rental QB’ of sorts we have that they would use until Ben got out of punishment/trouble/whatever.
And they have Dixon and Batch, so that won’t likely happen. If they did try to deal for McNabb or Kolb, I’d believe Big Ben was damn near on his way out of Steeltown.

Cardinals, 49ers, and Vikings are the only non-identified teams I can imagine trading for McNabb.
The Bears have 0 ammo. There’s just no way that happens.
I am the people's troll :3™
I can see someone like
Tampa, Jax or even the Panthers making a move…
Tampa has a young QB who could benefit working behind a guy he most resembles, although he did decent in his starts last year, you dont want a HC who’s job may be in jepordy this year relying on a guy who may or may not deliver on a week to week basis..
Jacksonville just seems like they dont like Gerard sometimes and they want someone who can be a step or two up from him..
Carolina has Moore but he’s young and you know Fox is looking ensure his team does very well considering this is his Contract year

You dont play a young 1st rounder for over half a season, and then trade for an old starter. It doesnt happen.

Yeah, I’d like to dream up some more teams whose starters aren’t as good as McNabb but haven’t much been mentioned.
Let’s see. AFC teams with …
… QB as good as/better than McNabb: NE, Indy, Cincy, Pitt, Houston, San Diego
… Not better, but team has their guy: NY Jets, Baltimore, Tennessee, Kansas City
… QB worse than McNabb and in need: Buffalo, Cleveland, Denver?, Jacksonville?, Oakland
What about Miami? They could be married to Henne, but also could be in need. And who wouldn’t want to move there?

He played fairly well down the stretch.
I was impressed with him when he played the Vikes and Gigantes, although when you have DeAngelo and Jon Stewart at your disposal, it’s pretty hard to look terrible.*

Al Davis never lets me down
The whole Asomugha for McNabb trade idea still makes me laugh. Too bad it won’t happen because his contract is so ridiculous.
The Vikings make a ton of sense, but count on Brett to screw that up by waiting until September to make his decision. Not that I want to get on that horse but if I were Brad Childress I’d be giving Favre the ultimatum.
If he goes to the raiders for Asomugha they are going to have to change his contract and sign him to a new deal in this year he is owed like $16 mil which is redic
Asamoghua
is very much worth 16 million dollars for this year. I mean they throw his way less then 30 times…for a whole season!!!!! That is money well spent to me. That means, they would be trying to hit the nickel spot(most likely covered by Sheldon, so bad choice) or the other starter, Asante. Can we call 14 picks for Samuels if they have that many balls flying his way? Yes, this would be an amazing pick up.

What about the Broncosand Chiefs? They both have young, relatively unproven QBs who might benefit from veteran tutelage, or who may not be true starters.
I guess the arguments against the two are that the Broncos already traded for a QB this offseason and aren’t likely to do it again, and the Chiefs do like Cassel, but neither of these teams would shock me.
I Am Better Than Jack Who Some Fool Thinks Is Better Than Asante (IABTJWSFTIBTA)
Ehh...
The Chiefs got too much invested in Cassel. I mean he’ll let em down because he was in a system where even I could look like an All-Pro QB in NE, but they aren’t ready to give up on him yet.
As for the Broncos, they got there guy in Quinn and they will find out the hard way it won’t work. I mean I know McDaniels keeps saying “Orton’s our guy”, but I have yet to find an NFL team that gives up 2 draft picks and a player for a back up.
LIKE Cassell?
They have a love affair with him.. Ha
The Eagles WILL redeem themselves in the '10-'11 season, with a win at SuperBowl 45 in Dallas!
Brady's done
couldn’t even win the superbowl this past year? I think we get NE’s first for McNabb!!! Maybe even a trade with Indy since Manning is back to choking. McNabb could win a superbowl and we’ll get our pick and win it the next year!
..Of all the teams he wouldn't go to..
New England tops it. They have Brady. Plus, I think Philly fans would be PISSED OFF to see McNabb play for the team he lost the only SuperBowl he brought the Eagles to.. ESPECIALLY IF he got a ring on that team..

I know you were joking
But Brady is a FA after this season and they have not begun contract talks yet. The Patriots are more shadowy and secretive than the Eagles are, and they do just as much unannounced, unceremonious booting of veterans as we do.
Brady will command an incredible sum of money. McNabb’s annual contract value is likely to decrease.
Just playing the (unnecessary) devil’s advocate.
Ummm....'Niners?
Seriously, they have it all for a deep play off run, running game, TE, good defense, running minded head coach, they just lack the QB.
This would also fall into the catergory of not wanting to ruffle feathers, as they have always said that they were comfortable with Alex Smith.
Also, they have two first round picks…..awwwwww yaaaaaa
Almost forgot
their division is wide open, now that Kurt Warner has retired from the Cardinals
by PierrEagles on Mar 29, 2010 12:10 AM EDT up reply actions
I’ve said all along McNabb is the perfect fit for them. Stud running back. Stud tight end. Stud in the making receiver, good offensive line. Nasty defense. That team can win the division without him. But with him…first round bye is not out of the realm of possibilities.
Do we play them this year?
I can only imagine the fan reaction to us losing to the Mcnabb-led Niners

They seem to be perfect for a McNabb, but I've read somewhere that they aren't position to make that kind of move.
I’m not sure why though. Are they paying a ton of money and worried about taking too much more on in case of a new CBA next year?
The 49ers just fired their GM
Not sure if the place-holder guy has the authority to make a franchise quarterback switch, but otherwise, it adds up as much as anybody.

I posted this as a FanShot yesterday, but it definitely deserved a nice, long post. There are some interesting tidbits of information in that article.
I don’t think we can write off teams like the Niners, Cardinals, Vikings, and Seahawks and possibly even the Steelers and Bears… those two are a bit more of a stretch though.
I’m really hoping we find something out this week about this situation. I’m really tired of this “a source who knows a source who knows the uncle of another source” crap.

I’m guilty of not looking at the FanShots usually. Not because they aren’t worthy, but because my progression usually goes Front, FanPosts, FanShots, and I usually get distracted replying to one of the first two.
I knew I couldn’t have been the only one who read that and thought it was worth discussing.
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
Pit makes sense to me.
I think the Rooneys are tired of Bens antics. If he is suspended, they may just move on. I’m not sure how much older McNabb is than Roethlisberger. But I think Ben gets suspended 1 maybe 2 years if he is guilty.
That said, the Steelers don’t go into the season with Batch. Makes sense to me.
In Kolb we trust
Ehhhhh
They have a QB who has serious upside in Dixon, and he’s got the mobility that Donovan is losing. McNabb is the better passer for sure, but Dixon made NFL-quality throws at Oregon and he made some NFL quality throws in his brief playing time in Pittsburgh. Considering the Steelers can use a gameplan where their QB only throws 15 times in a game, I don’t know that they’re too alarmed about having to start Dixon or Batch. They have a pretty high quality assortment of skill players, such as Ward, Holmes, Wallace, Mendenhall, Miller, etc.
No way they depend on Nixon bro.
If they feel that Roethlisberger is guilty, they may do what Atlanta did with Vick and just release him. The Rooneys don’t play those games, that kind of publicity isn’t good.
Lets face it, they have a low second round pick anyway. So even if they were interested, they would be one of our last options in a trade. That pick is essentially a high 3rd rounder, since it soo deep in the second.
In Kolb we trust
Just heard this on SportsCenter
They’re reporting that there is one secret team, a “Team X” as they put it, that has been asking about McNabb.
My hunch? The 49ers.

He's doing his pro day right now
and he’s apparently killing it. Already past 50 throws, and he’s only let one hit the ground. One bad throw. Marty is also apparently at the pro day, along with 50+ other execs.
Obviously
We’re trading McNabb, Kolb, and Vick (maybe Sheldon too) all for draft picks so we can move up to #1 and get Bradford. Get it done.

I am the people's troll :3™
(well, really it’s assuming he makes it to the 6th pick, not just past Washington)
I am the people's troll :3™
And yes, I realize it would probably take more than Kolb to snatch the 6th overall pick, but I’d rather have Bradford developing behind McNabb for 2-3 years than Kolb and questions at backup QB.

That would be

But I’d love it if a Miami or Carolina came out of the blue and said ‘look, Henne/Moore is nice, but this is McNabb we’re talking about.’ "
Well, I’d only love it if we got a sweet deal.
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
The thing about Miami
is the way they run their offense- wildcat and whatnot. If they do decide to bring in McNabb, they’d have to change their offensive philosophy completely.

Would they though?
What’s to say McNabb can’t run what Miami asks him to run?
Anyway, I don’t mean to come off obsessed about them. Was just trying to think outside the box as to who the interested teams might be.
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
Lol
Nah, we’re all doing the same thing. A dark horse candidate would be Miami, but what about Denver? It gives Marshall a reason to stay, McNabb reunites with Dawk and Buck, and, let’s face it- the Broncos with McNabb can easily handle San Diego.
And yeah, I can see McNabb doing the wildcat plays for Miami. But, you really think he’d wanna do that?
by LegendKnight22 on Mar 29, 2010 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions
I've always been partial to the Broncos idea
for the reasons you mentioned. Plus because Quinn and Orton aren’t that good by comparison. Plus I think the guys who have kind-of-good teams with leadership voids at QB would take an interest. Certainly a Miami/Carolina/Denver team where the cupboard isn’t bare could take the leap with McNabb, or be 6-10 with their new QB. Who knows.
I bet Jacksonville is happier with Garrard (Pro Bowler! … er, sorta) than they let on. They just need someone that sells to address their lagging gate.
As far as wildcat plays, I think it’s pretty clear McNabb prefers not to have them, but in an offense where he wasn’t asked to throw all the time and was that way before he arrived (as opposed to vice versa), it might not seem so odd. I don’t know though.
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
McNabb + Pittsburgh = Super Bowl 8 for the Steelers
That’s just a winning organization and fans that DON’T PLACE IT ALL ON THE QB. They know how to take what the QB can do and then build around that.

The only QB that has a chance of going to the Steelers is Vick.
The only way McNabb/Kolb ends up on the Steelers is if they dump Big Ben. And that’s quite unlikely to happen.
