Eagles want a top 42 pick for McNabb

The latest in a string of odd and probably off base rumors surrounding the Eagles and Donovan McNabb comes from the Associated Press.

A person familiar with trade discussions involving McNabb told the Associated Press the Philadelphia Eagles will only consider a deal for the six-time Pro Bowl quarterback if it includes a pick among the top 42 in next month’s NFL draft.

Why they would set a seemingly arbitrary limit of pick #42, which is the 10th pick of the second round & held by Tampa Bay, is beyond me. But, this is what is out there.

Sorry Miami with pick #43, we're not interested!

Arbitrary

I guess when you think about it it’s not really any more arbitrary that wanting a 1st rounder. The gap between the 32nd and 33rd picks is the same as the gap between the 42nd and 43rd picks.

If the Eagles are really using this as a cutoff, then it probably means they looked at the players in the draft and decided that the talent takes a significant drop after the top 42 players are off the board.

I think it probably has more to do with what they think they can get in terms of a 1st rounder. If Andy feels he can legitimately get a first round pick in the teens, then setting your floor as the 10th pick in the second round keeps the pressure on those teams to give up a 1st for McNabb, whereas saying the 45th overall pick would let those teams offer you their second and make a 1st rounder off the table. At the same time it keep the Bills and Raiders and Bucs in the running as there’s no way you get a top 10 pick for a QB in his 30’s, but you may get an early 2nd for him.

This is starting to get ridiculous. This sounds like one of those “I’m a reporter and I’m going to throw this up there to see if it sticks” things.

It's too bad ...

… We can’t ban anonymous sourcing entirely. “A person familiar with the Eagles’ thinking” … Could be anyone.

Personally, a pick alone for McNabb would bug me. I like the rumors with an established talent involved.

Also, can we get Garcia to be the No. 3 & preserve a draft pick?

My bad

“trade discussions”

Could be another team’s GM or an agent or someone with an axe to grind. Hard to tell how reliable that is … Or what it means in the end. Hopefully we get a pick much better than 42 even if we have 42 players with first-round grades. I’d rather have pick of the litter

What if?

I was thinking that the Raiders might be thinking of getting McNabb and T.O back together again? Would actually be pretty interesting, IMHO!

i would say that this would only take consideration if mcnabb was acquired

i’m actually starting to feel bad for mcnabb (besides him making millions to play a game). he’s kept up the high road saying he wants to finish here, but every where he looks he’s getting traded somewhere else. lets get this done quick birds.

somehow this is going to be the eagles fan base’s fault.

Chase Utley is so good that on one pitch he stole second, third and the shortstop's hat.

Don't do it quick

Do it right.

And yes, we fans are going to take a beating as though we never appreciated, loved & cheered for the guy. For 11 years. They might even do a montage of undersppreciated Philly athletes who left town too soon. Expect to see the clip of the yahoos booing in draft day.

That part is gonna suck ass. It’s not like we’re too stupid to know what we had (er, have) or we never liked the guy. I’ll be interested to see if McNabb continues along the high road or unloads.

I wonder how the world would be different if we’d won in 04.

Also, this is clearly how GB fans felt a few years ago. Maybe after a while, people will start hating McNabb for not hanging them up :)

If he's traded to Oakland...

I think it’ll be really, really tough for McNabb to stay on the high road. I would not be surprised if he takes a couple of shots at the Eagles organization… and in all fairness, I wouldn’t blame him.

by Smitty2K3 on Mar 26, 2010 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I think they said #42 because they want a 2nd rounder, and all the teams interested in D-mac have were all bottom ten teams last year

This is stupid

If I was #5 I I wouldn’t wanna be in Philly anymore yall acting like yall don’t support our team seems like everybodys a eagle fan not for the team just the players

Seems like the opposite

Everybody who loves the Eagles gets used to seeing their favorite players walk sometime in their 30s … and still loves the team.

dont take this personal

but god damn people that are not interested or on board with the likely possibility of mcnabb being shipped off need to realize that the fan base didn’t do this …

this has all been Front Office turmoil … there wasn’t 2000 fans on broad street with go away mcnabb t-shirts

the front office has gone above and beyond to make it obvious they are willing to ship him off
so of course if you were mcnabb you wouldn’t want to be in Philly anymore … i wouldn’t either … but this is the inevitable business side of football

fans such as yourself need to realize that just because were highly interested in shipping him out doesn’t mean we don’t respect the man or wanted this to happen … its the inevitability of it happening that’s pushed us into the speculation and interest of what we can acquire for him

I didn't want to make another fanshot:

“Donovan McNabb spoke to Andy Reid on Thursday to tell him of his preference to spend this year with Philadelphia, not Oakland or Buffalo.”

- According to Adam Schefter

Now that would be funny

if McNabb pulls a TO and nixes the trade the Eagles make!

by G Fan in England on Mar 26, 2010 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think his contract...

has a no trade clause. I’ve been a Donovan supporter since the beginning, but it’s time for Reid to unload for what he can. They aren’t going to resign him next year, so you have to trade him now to get any value.

by Apdirtybird on Mar 26, 2010 1:58 PM EDT reply actions

he's got his own no trade clause.

by refusing to sign an extension with the other team he pretty much blocks all trades. No one is going to trade a high draft pick for a 1 year rental at 5 mil

They call me The Professor.

by Whodie126 on Mar 26, 2010 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Not that anyone would do the deal for one year ...

… but McNabb might prefer free agency in 2011 over being stuck in BUF/OAK forever.
