McNabb vs. Kolb: Weighing the Pros and Cons
If you believe the nonstop media circus that is ESPN, it looks as though Donovan is on his way out of town sometime soon. Whether it comes to pass or not, let's stop speculating for a minute and take an in-depth look at our top 2 quarterbacks and see who is actually better to have for the time being.
DONOVAN MCNABB
Age: 33 (Will turn 34 next season)
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 240
College: Syracuse
Experience: 12 years
Andy Reid scored a bulls-eye when he took this man for his first draft pick as head coach of the Eagles. Donovan McNabb has had a tremendous career thus far and now owns pretty much every Eagles passing record; he is also the winningest QB in franchise history. Yet in the 11 seasons he has played, the team has been to the NFC Championship game 5 times, losing all but one (in 2004), and lost their only Super Bowl appearance in his tenure. He has been named to the Pro Bowl six times, but a Super Bowl title eludes him. He is widely respected by players, coaches and fans, and any team would be lucky to have him.
PROS
- Has a cannon arm; his passes are some of the hardest in the league
- Even after sustaining a broken ankle, a sports hernia, and a torn ACL, he is still quite mobile; he is one of the best in the game at escaping sacks
- Is good at game management, better than Andy Reid anyway
- Can make plays on the run
- Has extensive playoff experience
- Minimizes interceptions; does not throw them often
CONS
- Is getting old (he'll be 34 next November); past his prime
- Prone to injury
- Has lost a step in his scrambling play due to age and injuries
- Pass accuracy leaves something to be desired; will sometimes overthrow or short-hop open receivers; sometimes does not make the throws he should
- Not as good as he should be at protecting the ball; gets jumpy in the pocket
- Field vision can be spotty; often has passes batted down at the line of scrimmage
KEVIN KOLB
Age: 25 (Will turn 26 in August)
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 220
College: Houston
Experience: 4 years
The Eagles surprised everyone, including McNabb, when they traded down into the second round to select Kevin Kolb with their first pick. He started out as a third-stringer behind A.J. Feeley, but took over the backup spot the following year. His first regular season appearance, as we all know, was disastrous, but it was hardly his fault. Being thrown in mid-game against a defense like the Ravens' with no preparation will do that. But he turned a lot of heads last year, when he started 2 games in the place of an injured McNabb and became the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for over 300 yards in his first two regular season starts. He has been tagged as McNabb's heir apparent by the Eagles brass.
PROS
- Has good accuracy; can make some throws McNabb can't; will make the throws he should
- Has touch on his passes
- Quick decision-maker; has a very quick release
- Solidly built; durability is not a concern
- Has good leadership qualities and a strong work ethic
- He'll only be 26 this season; has his whole career in front of him and has a lot of upside
CONS
- Issues of experience; may take some time to master Andy Reid's system
- Not as athletic as McNabb; may take a lot of sacks
- Doesn't have McNabb's arm strength; the deep ball is a concern
- While more mobile than some might think, he won't run away from defenders too often
- Didn't play in a pro-style offense at Houston; this may limit his ability to become an elite vertical passer
- Will have a TON of pressure put on him if he takes over for McNabb
So there we have it. If you put these two side by side, neither is a runaway winner. Each has strengths that the other doesn't, so each brings their own special brand of play to the field. So who should we give the edge to? McNabb's given us 11 good years, and he's stated time and again that he thinks he can still bring the Lombardi Trophy to Philly. Kolb has been waiting quietly in the wings, and I wouldn't doubt that he's learned a lot. His performance in his only 2 starts last season showed us all that he can step up and get the job done.
EDGE: KOLB
No disrespect intended for Donovan here, but I think Kolb is ready to take the reins. Kolb still has at least 4 years before he reaches his prime, while McNabb is already past it. Kolb may not throw the lasers McNabb can, or bomb a pass 50-60 yards in the air, but he's an accurate, high-percentage passer who can retain possession, move the chains, and eat up the clock. He is able to make passes in traffic, which McNabb sometimes shies away from. Even though he doesn't have McNabb's athleticism in avoiding sacks, Kolb can still use his feet to find open ground, and his quick release and rapid-fire decision-making will help offset lesser mobility.
Donovan's career is not over, but it would just be the best thing for all parties if he were to find a different team and start anew. He may benefit from playing in a city with less intense, demanding fans (come on, folks, we all know how we can get), and as we are all aware, Donovan is at his best when he's playing loose and having fun.
But a trade comes with a few caveats; first, if a trade is to be done, it must happen before or during the draft. The team simply cannot afford to open minicamp with a rift between McNabb and the rest of the organization. The brass has unzipped its fly, so to speak, and it better get to the gettin', or else there's gonna be a pretty big matzoh ball hanging out there come May.
Second, as we all know, trading McNabb gives us the age-old dilemma of swapping experience for youth. McNabb has been playing in Reid's system for over a decade; Kolb is still learning it. We will have to wait and see if Kolb can handle baptism by fire; Baltimore still haunts our memories.
Finally, if we trade McNabb, we cannot expect a Super Bowl title out of Kolb in his first full season as a starter. He'll need some time to get on the same page with his offense, and fans should steel themselves for at least a season or two of more losses than we've become accustomed to. However, he is in luck, because his offense happens to be very young and very talented. The Oakland Raiders they ain't. What's more, the youngsters on offense have a lot of respect for Kolb, and they're ready for him to lead.
With all due respect to 5, the era of Donovan McNabb is at an end. Whether he's traded or not, Andy Reid has already pulled an okey-doke on him by going back on his statement that Donovan would be his starting QB in 2010. He has played admirably in his 11 seasons with the team, and even though he didn't win a Super Bowl during that time, he always kept us in contention. I had to remind myself of this even when he drove me crazy, gave me ulcers, and caused me to cry myself to sleep on more than one occasion (yeah, I'm man enough to admit when I cry; only the Eagles can make me do it). I know you're probably thinking that I'm speaking of him as if he's already gone, but let's face facts: we need to trade him while we can still get something out of him, and for his sake, while he still has some gas left in the tank and therefore is able to secure a starting spot elsewhere. It's just a matter of time now, kids. Let's get ready for a changing of the guard.

Great post, very well written. I think any Quarterback can go to the Superbowl any given year. Look at the Ravens and Dilfer. Brady did it I think and Kolb may have a good shot with the receivers we have. Defense is the big concern for me. I hope Mcnabb stays for 3 more years.
where the heck you been buddy ?

great article. I enjoyed it.
Agree with your assessment of both QB. Great work.
I would only add that Kolb is really aggressive, and will result in more Ints. But your analysis was very accurate and fair.
In Kolb we trust
You basically have said what's on all of our minds.
And this is one of the better McNabb posts iv’e seen throughout this whole trade debacle.

Here are my pros and cons..
Cons to trading McNabb:
Divides fan base
will get nasty
will most likely take a year for kolb to F.S.U.(my new acronym for fuck shit up)
Pro’s to trading McNabb:
No more dirt balls
No cloud bursters
We get a QB that fits our system better
We get younger..
Cons to NOT trading McNabb:
We will lose all 3 of our QB’s(will elaborate on my thinking if you ask)
Division among the team
chemistry problems
Pro’s to NOT trading McNabb:
we still have his goofy “its my fault” shit when he blows an easy pass.

Haha, am I the only Eagles fan who loves Donny’s attitude when he plays? I hate players who never break a smile, much rather have a guy just go out and have fun. Even when he’s laughing off 3 and outs lol.
well when hes smiling after missing a pass in the playoffs i tend to get a little ticked lol
In 20 We Trust
Yeah it can be frustrating
But I’m pretty sure those are forced smiles. There’s no doubt in my mind that the guy hates losing, I admire his ability to cover up his frustration like that without going all Jay Cutler on everyone.
I think its like one of those "what the fuck" laughs" ya know

Yeah, I love the attitude
I agree, it’s probably usually that “fuck… well that sucked…” smile. I wish I could play golf with that attitude. There;s something to be said for level-headedness and optimism.

Nice post, Rec'd
I appreciate the capitalization of proper nouns and the proper grammar and abbreviation. I’ll admit… it was a bit long, but I’ll take a long post like this over five poorly-written, paragraph-sized posts anyday. Posts like this seem to be few and far between. Well done.
But anyways, although this has been said already in many different ways, I agree with what you said.
It’s time to move on. Now FO, get it done sooner rather than later.
Pros to trading McNabb
1 Compensation – we could get 1st round value for him
2 New direction – fresh start with a you qb with high expectations
3 Cost effective – we’ve got a lot of money tied up in our QBs this season, I think Mcnabbs at like 10 million, vick at 5, Kolb 2(?)
4 The future – Get Kolb his reps now, so that when this years draft class gets some experience (5 new potential starters/studs), we’ll be an absolutely dirty team and Kolb will be ready.
Cons
1) The present – were really not that far off from competing for a superbowl.. We didn’t really lose much from last years team, signed a couple solid guys, and hopefuly get STew and Jamal back healthy next year. One big FS signing or, LB signing and we could be right there in the mix. McNabb would be the optimal QB for a SB run this year.
2) No respect -slightly disrespect another franchise team leader and set the tone for a team where the FO doesn’t care about you personally at all, even if your name is Brian Dawkin or Donovan McNabb.
3) Uncertainty – you don’t know if Kolb will be a stud or bust. Just haven’t seen enough of him yet.
First Dawkins, Then Westbrook, now Donovan
might as well get rid of Andy Reid also if the Eagles are trying to clean house and rebuild. Donovan is not the scapegoat for all the Eagles problems. We will see how good Kolb is behind a Shaky O-Line and the lack of a solid running game/Andy Reid choosing to chuck the ball around 50 times a game.
If Kolb is so much more valuable see what you can get for him?

Pros to trading Kolb
1) No more pick 6’s.
2) We won’t have to watch him lead us to back to back 6-10 seasons
3) Some idiot will give us a first for him that we can use to bolster the struggling defense.
...But if he pulls the rug on his quarterback, Reid must do it knowing that he let McNabb down more than McNabb ever let him down.
Phil Sheridan--Philadelphia Inquirer
I love Kolb, but I would take a first for him.

I love Kolb, but I also don't McNabb. I just want something done already either way.
We need more players on defense badly. We don’t have enough picks in this draft. I prefer Kolb stayed, but if Kolb is gonna get you a first rounder, than do it. Its not like McNabb cost us games last year. He just didn’t do much to win games. That said, my preference is Kolb.
In Kolb we trust

I disagree with you EB!
The Kolb quarterbacked Eagles will be 5-11. 6-10 is a pipe dream! Every good team will beat him. Look at our schedule. People talk about his stats. But he is 0-2 against good teams. I count that Ravens game because he came in with the game still winnable. We will be 5-11 MAX.

I really dislike Kolb's game.
It’s not out of the question that we go 5-11 or 4-12 with him
...But if he pulls the rug on his quarterback, Reid must do it knowing that he let McNabb down more than McNabb ever let him down.
Phil Sheridan--Philadelphia Inquirer
True. Kolb wasn't even close to challenging for a win in either of the games
against good teams. His play had “0” leverage in the outcome. McNabb still shows he has the ability to change or at least control the game. But I agree with you, it’s the Banner/Reid propaganda machine that keeps McNabb the whipping boy.
by Lombardi and Broad on Apr 1, 2010 11:16 AM EDT up reply actions
Riddle Me This
How can you so confidently predict Kolb’s outcome if the team doesn’t even give him a chance to start. McNabb himself is good against lousy teams (excepting Oakland and Cincy lol) and little more than mediocre against good teams. I already said in my post that the team may need time to adjust if Kolb starts. But what is going to change about McNabb at this point in his career that will get us over the championship hump?
Tony Romo...why so serious?
GOTCHA! Peyton Manning is .500 against good teams too. No QB's
dominate good teams their entire career in general. But you have to be able to beat good teams enough to make it to 5 (FIVE) NFC Championship Games. Jaws, Randall and Snead couldn’t do it. WHAT THE HELL MAKES YOU KOLB KNOBS THINK HE CAN??? Well you’ll soon see what me and EB have been saying all along! (And I’ll be rooting for Kolb because I am an Eagles fan. But this guy can’t beat winning teams at all.) RIDDLE THAT!
by Lombardi and Broad on Apr 1, 2010 9:13 PM EDT up reply actions
Riddle me this:
Why are you so against giving a guy that the Eagles groomed for three years a shot? He could turn out to be as good as Ryan Leaf or Joe Montana. He’s unproven, but needs to actually prove himself before jumping to conclusion.
Oh, and since you’re talking about McNabb and Championship game…he’s 1-4 in them. If he was the one that got us there, he was also one who lost them for us. No two way about it.
RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.
Hey, look, my sig isn't overly big!

That still makes Donovan our best playoff QB ever! You people make NO
sense! Why didn’t AJ Feeley get a chance? I’ll answer that. BECAUSE HE WAS NOT AS GOOD AS DONOVAN! AND NEITHER IS KOLB OR HE WOULD HAVE STARTED THE NEXT WEEK AFTER THE BALTIMORE GAME! And McNabb would have been gone last summer. But the truth is, Kolb is NOT the guy.
by Lombardi and Broad on Apr 1, 2010 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions
Good argument
What good teams did Mcnabb beat this past season? He lost them all, oh and he lost to the Raiders!
If you’re going to use useless statistics to try to prove your point, then my point is just as valid as yours.
If we were weighing Pros vs. Cons shouldn’t we be talking about McNabb and Kolb vs. Vick?
I am the people's troll :3™
Don't See Why
Vick doesn’t have a shot in hell of becoming this team’s starter
Tony Romo...why so serious?
You want to sign your name to that statement?
