Rumor: McNabb-to-Raiders Deal Brewing?

As if you aren't sick of all the Donovan McNabb trade talk already, yet another rumor has surfaced: this one involving a deal between the Eagles and the Raiders. According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the current deal being discussed between the two teams would involve McNabb and cornerback Asante Samuel departing for Oakland while cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha would come to Philadelphia. Florio speculates that the Eagles are attempting to replace Samuel with disgruntled cornerback Sheldon Brown, thus stalling the deal.

This is not the first trade buzz involving Oakland today. Earlier this afternoon, Scout.com analyst Chris Stueber speculated that it would take the Raiders' second round draft pick and free safety Michael Huff to land McNabb. Jason La Canfora of NFL Network also listed Oakland as one of the teams in heavy pursuit of the Eagles QB.

While this is all still speculation, one thing is certain: the trade rumors about McNabb are not going to fade away any time soon.

[Update by Bob_Q, 03/25/10 10:48 PM EDT ] For what it's worth, ESPN's Adam Schefter has responded to this particular rumor via his Twitter account, saying that "Eagles would be giving up too much, especially w/ Nnamdi's contract."

Seriously?!?!?!!!

Why on earth would we make this trade? Two pro-bowlers for one, that is just stupid. Is Al Davis running our team too. This would be the dumbest trade we could make unless we get some kind of draft pick as compensation too, there is no way that I would do this trade, we are getting the short end of the stick with this proposal.

by PhillyEagles10 on Mar 25, 2010 7:04 PM EDT reply actions

That was my first thought when I heard the rumor

Surely, there has to be some sort of draft pick exchange that Florio missed.

by Bob_Q on Mar 25, 2010 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it's obvious...

that a draft pick is involved. Wouldn’t be a 1st-rounder & perhaps not even a 2nd if it’s sheldon that goes, but there’d have to be a draft pick in it for us as well for that deal to make sense.

Is probably already drawing up plays for McNabb on this:

by MG77 on Mar 25, 2010 7:05 PM EDT reply actions

Well done

I was just joking about Al Davis’ infamous press conference a few years ago about Lane Kiffin where he used an overhead projector and the reporters covering it were trying not to laugh out loud.

by MG77 on Mar 25, 2010 8:18 PM EDT up reply actions

This will never happen. McNabb has already said he doesn’t want to go there and won’t sign an extension so if Oakland still made this trade knowing you only get McNabb for a year then they are retarded. Then again they did trade next years first rounder for Richard Seymour.

The Raiders have been trying to trade Asomugha because they just recently realized how bad his contract is. Not sure why the Birds would want to take that on.

This just doesn’t make any sense.

Getting this from Pro Football Focus:

Asomugha was thrown at 28 times last season. That is less than two times per game. There’s a reason for that.

by EREX21 on Mar 25, 2010 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions

imagine Samuel and Asomugha in the same defensive backfield

If Asomugha does get avoided more passes would be thrown to Samuel and that would elad to more picks. And vice verse. Then we can draft a Safety in the draft and develop him with those two guys. aaaaaaah! siiiick

It could end up as more picks, or it could missed up on more catches because Samuel bit to early and then missed the tackle and the guy breaks one for a score because we still have no safeties.

I dont get why ppl say we have no safetys

granted we have no superstars liek BDawk. QMikell was an allpro a year ago. and Macho has shown potential, and with one of the best DBacks coaches in the league in Dick Jauron i dont see why he wont develop into that potential. Plus Marlin Jackson who should be a contributor. If we add a top safety prospect through the draft like Taylor Mays we would be more than fine

I’m saying this with a straight face – I doubt the Eagles would be interested in Asomugha with his current contract even if the Raiders are willing to hand him over for absolutely nothing.

…much less give up 2 great players to get him.

This rumor is beyond unrealistic.

I know, right!

The frugal Eagles aren’t going near that dude.

Plus the deal is retarted

by topcat6 on Mar 25, 2010 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Are you sure

that his contract would be as bad as you think it is if he was traded to the Eagles?

The big question is how much of his contract is in bonuses and how much is salary? I’ve been looking for details of his contract and there seems to be conflicting reports all over the place.

It’s my understanding that when a player is traded to another team his bonuses stay on the books for the previous team and counted as a cap hit (which in this case would be zero). While the new team takes on the salaries of the contract.

From people that I’ve talked to and from things that I’ve read, I think this situation wouldn’t be as bad as we think it would be (for either team). The Raiders would get rid of a terrible contract, while the Eagles would get Nnamdi at a “discounted” contract.

I certainly don’t think we make the deal reported above (DM&AS for NA), but I also don’t think trading for Nnamdi isn’t as far-fetched as we think.

by Smitty2K3 on Mar 26, 2010 9:59 AM EDT up reply actions

In his final year of the contract (2011 season)

His salary will be the franchise tag for a QB, or ~$17 million, whichever is higher. That is a god-awful contract.

Are you guys hoping that the Raiders make a deal for McNabb? And if so, at what price?

by Smitty2K3 on Mar 26, 2010 10:00 AM EDT up reply actions

We are split

It doesn’t make sense to me since our team is very young, and I want to ride out the current youth movement we have going. I like Bruce Gradkowski, and think he can be a leader.

The Raider fans that want McNabb are sick of the seven year losing streak we have going, and think he can change this immediately. Honestly, our line is so anemic, Peyton Manning would have problems performing behind these guys.

Raider nation seems to be 50/50, as long as the price is low. I think the second round pick straight up would be well received, but the Nnamdi trade would not be.

In all seriousness

This trade makes no sense for the Eagles.

- You take back even more guaranteed money on Nnamdi than with Samuel.
- Nnamdi is almost as old as Samuel and not going to be a building
- No picks

Doesn’t make any sense from the Eagles end but I could the Raiders FO making it even if McNabb didn’t sign an extension before the trade. Hell, nothing the Raiders do at this point would really surprise me unless Davis sold the team.

by MG77 on Mar 25, 2010 7:19 PM EDT reply actions

You send a star corner for another star corner and send McNabb for free? It doesn’t make any sense. Send McNabb for Asomugha straight up would be great but no way part with both Samuel and McNabb.

by yomjoseki on Mar 25, 2010 7:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I can’t answer that. But when the guy lined up on the other side of the field is absolute garbage then why wouldn’t a team throw the ball at him rather than Asomugha? I bet that plays a part in it. But clearly there is a big disparity between 111 times and 28.

by EREX21 on Mar 25, 2010 7:59 PM EDT up reply actions

They are both cream of the crop but I think it’s more impressive that Revis allowed only a 37% completion with 111 targets. QB rating againts Revis is a fuckin’ 32. His 6 INT also gets him huge bonus points. If you give me the option to pick just one, right now, Revis is has the edge.

by Route36 on Mar 25, 2010 9:10 PM EDT up reply actions

How is Asomugha supposed to get 6 picks when teams only throw it at him 28 times?

Revis – 1 pick per 18 attempts

Asomugha – 1 pick per 28 attempts(at least 28 since he had only 1 pick)

So there!!! What up?

P.S….I said picks are a bonus, not one of my main points.

by Route36 on Mar 25, 2010 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Revis: thrown to 111 times
Asomugha: thrown to 28 times

by Team Serbia on Mar 25, 2010 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Revis is also on a great defense on a decent team. Asomugha is a star on possibly the worst team in the league which makes him even more impressive

Why would Mcnabb go to Oakland? He said he doesn’t want to go to a perennial loser. Oakland fits that mold. The 49ers have a really good team, the just don’t have a QB. Mcnabb is a really good QB, looking for a new home.

Seems like they should be a good fit together. I don’t know, but I think Mcnabb would sign a deal with them, especially over the Rams, Raiders, and Bills. Ohh Jax too.

Bills pretty much have no one at QB right now. Then you add the fact that their owner is, what, 90 years old? You would think they’d wanna make some noise before a total overhaul was made.

They have a pretty good D, and a sorta decent offense. Obviously, they have O-line questions, but with the right moves, they can make some noise in the regular season.

Would McNabb be enough to take ’em to the postseason? I doubt it. But getting him would probably help them get closer.

by LegendKnight22 on Mar 25, 2010 7:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I think a lot of these teams with older owners looking for a shot at glory like the Bills and the Raiders see McNabb as their shot. He is a fine quarterback, I know a lot of people want to move on. His(Asante) lack of situational awareness kills me. Dude always makes plays but then when plays are needed he disappears. If he wouldn’t have wanted to be Deion Sanders, the Pats would have won the SB if he just caught that pick and went out of bounds. Nope, he wanted to be a hero and dropped it like an ass.

Also, when we really need a stop, he refuses to tackle someone. It really bothers me sometimes. I think he is a great playmaker but not a #1 shutdown. I think he is the best of the #2’s in the NFL.

LOL! I'm getting a distinct feeling that the Eagles are simply trying to find out

what these QB’s are worth and is it worth carrying all 3 through the year. Also, Andy has to at least check to see what they are worth because the front office is in favor of trading McNabb and Vick, placing pressure on him to at least check to see what’s out there in a deal. Obviously there is a premium on Kolb this year. But teams may actually pay the price for him. I wouldn’t be surprised if #5 is under center in September.

Asomugha's contract

Asomugha is NOT worth the contract. His contract is a RENTAL.

Asomugha signed a contract in 09 with all of the first two seasons ($28.6m) fully guaranteed. In addition, the contract has a poison pill in it, where in order to keep Asomugha through 2011, the team must pay him either the FRANCHISE SALARY FOR A QUARTERBACK, OR, $16.875M for ONE YEAR, whichever is higher, or he becomes an UFA.

There is no way in hell he is going to willingly restructure and take less money from a team when he is being paid that much money. He’s going to walk from the Raiders and get an even bigger contract from another team.

by ZorkNemesis on Mar 25, 2010 11:37 PM EDT reply actions

I agree with you on your other points but he won’t get a bigger contract when he leaves the Raiders at age 31. No team is as stupid as the Raiders that will pay Nnamdi franchise QB money, at age 31 nonetheless.

2. I’d pay to get out of the Oakland organization

I’d love to land NA. The fact we’re pursuing him & Atogwe inthese “rumors” make me moe optimistic about a satisfactory outcome.

Nnamdi is the type of dude that would take a more cap friendly long term deal with a contenting team. The dude is the ultimate teammate, and professional. What if...

the Raiders traded their first rounder and Nnamdi for McNabb and Sheldon? Then we’d be getting the better part of the deal even though this would never happen. But it’s worth thinking about. Would you trade McNabb for a first and Sheldon, a top 10 cb, for the no.1/no.2 cb (depending on whether you are on the Darrelle Revis bandwagon) who has a enormous contract? If the Eagles would be willing to pay Nnamdi or he would be willing to restructure his deal, then I would say the majority of you guys would accept. Either way though, Nnamdi and their first for McNabb and Sheldon? I’d take that deal in a heartbeat (even with Nnamdi’s contract).

KOLB

The Eagles chance of winning right now is slim. It would good for the Eagles to hand it over to Kolb, the dude is the real deal. I saw this dude in college before he came out and he was clearly the most impressive qb to me that came out of his draft class. He proved it this year when he got his chance with Mcnabb’s injury. Mcnabb stay out longer on purpose hoping Kolb would fail but Kolb proved him wrong, and opened eyes to all the doubters to why the Eagles used a 2nd round pick on this guy. This is why Donovin will get traded. Get over it, the Eagles QB situation is in good hands.

Adam schecter saying the deal is not good because of Nnamdi’s contract? Man Nnamdi is a model citizen type dude and if the Eagles called him and his agent and suggested doing a long term deal right now and letting the trade go down, he would do it in a heartbeat! Nnamdi loves Oakland and doesn’t owe the organization anything at this point but the chance to show his overrall talent with another good organization which he would love to play for philly with you guys blitzing, big play type of defense.

by Raiderkev25 on Mar 26, 2010 5:26 PM EDT reply actions

Trade

At this point the trade isn’t even about Nnamdi or Mcnabb it’s about other players or draft pick each organization is willing to part with. I know that MLB Kirk Morrison is up for trade. Philly good use him? I know RB Michael Bush is tradeable. Philly could use him? I know Safety Michael Huff is tradeable. Philly could use him? Our 2nd round pick is up for trade also for Mcnabb?
