Eagles work out safety Mike Newton

Some more private workout news from our new partners over at National Football Post. The Eagles have scheduled a private workout with Buffalo safety Mike Newton. They were in also attendance at his pro day.

Newton ran the 40-yard dash in 4.46 and 4.48 seconds, also registering a 41-inch vertical leap and a 10-foot broad jump. A dozen teams attended the workout, including the Colts, Eagles, Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Chiefs and the New Orleans Saints. Newton, who registered 85 tackles and two interceptions last season as a second-team All-Mid-American Conference selection, has been projected as a sixth or seventh-round pick. The 5-foot-10, 197-pounder's vertical leap was the same as USC standout Taylor Mays.

Those are the guys you have to take a look at. If you’re looking at a guy from USC, you have tape of every game he’s ever played, you’ve seen him at the pro day, at the combine… You know everything about the guy.

I said this when they went to see the kid from Fordham. There isn’t even that much tape on him. All of those games weren’t even on TV. So those are the kind of guys you have to schedule workouts with.

Of course,

Mays is 40lbs heavier, but why quibble?

by Tracer Bullet on Mar 25, 2010 3:27 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, and 5 inches taller

But what’s five inches really anyways?

by AZ Eagle on Mar 25, 2010 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions

i'd rather have a safety who weighs 40 lbs less

than the ‘stud’ who has to use all his athletic ability to chase down a guy because he’s blown the coverage or missed the tackle.

Make no mistake

I think Mays is a terrible prospect as a safety, but it seems silly to compare guys who so vastly different in size.

by Tracer Bullet on Mar 25, 2010 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Silly to compare?

If its two players to fill the same position… its silly not to compare.

by Sparki on Mar 25, 2010 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions

If both of them can jump 41 inches, and one of them is 5 inches shorter

I’ll take the head to head on that.

But on the 40, I agree. Mr. Mays is toting about two extra 25 lb plates on his back and is still faster. On the electronic timers.

Is he related to.....

Fig Newton?
