State of the NFL

I was watching one of those NFL classics last night and it happened to be super bowl xxv between the Giants and the Bills and I couldn't help but wonder how modern ref's would have called this one.

For one, the qb's had balls (not that some don't now, but let's be serious). I could never see Brady or any other modern QB take some of the punishing hits Bruce Smith and LT were throwing. And I'm not talking sacks, I'm talking hits. If that game happened today do you know how many roughing the passer penalty's would have been called. The same goes for the battle between the d-backs and wr's. You would watch a wide out get completely crushed, and does he get up and whine? No. Does he bitch that the dback grabbed him more than 5 yards from scrimmage, NO.

It just stuck out to me how much football has changed, and not for the better. More and more often we watch as a ref or a stupid rule determines the outcome of the game, and more notoriously its future. Now with the OT rule change, I'm sick of this crap. I know the comish wants to protect his superstars, but it's gotten to the point where the game is diluted. I wanna see db's kick the shit out of wide receivers. I want to see Qb's take punishing hits and get back up like it was nothing. It's what made it a mans game, and what made the men who played it at the highest level champs. Seriously, I watched Jeff Hostetler get beaten to a bloody pulp, without a single call for roughness. And he kept getting back up, every single time. (Honestly it was like watching Jason Campbell try to take a snap, every snap)

The point I am trying to make is what makes the NFL great is a tradition of toughness and willpower that it takes to win. The old superstars of the nfl were great not only for their athletic ability but their ability to withstand brutal punishment and still make plays when needed. Just saying that as a society we've become to politically correct, and not let football be played to it's fullest extent.

Go Eagles

A-freaking-men.

Everyone loves watch good hits. Let them happen.

And worst part is…that roughing the passer rule is for only a select few. Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, those guys. Look how many hits Joe Flacco and Aaron Rodgers take that would’ve been call roughing the passer. Hell, look at that Packers-Cardinals wildcard game. Kurt Warner barely get touch, he get a roughing the passer call (turn down because they scored a touchdown). Aaron Rodgers get his facemask blatantly pulled down, no call.

Ugh.

RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

well don't worry

With how big Rodgers was last year, if you give him another 2 seasons like that, he’ll get that red carpet QB treatment.

One guy even

has his BGN name: “Get Jackson a better nickname”

No, kid, you get him a better nickname.

Who is supposed to get him a nickname, and how exactly does one just “get” a nickname for someone else. Shouldn’t DeSean have some say? Or should it be a fan thing? If it’s a fan thing, who gets to decide what it is?

Dammit, I hate this!!! Shut up about the nickname! It has to be organic, it has to just happen (and usually it has to happen in print or on TV), and the more you try to “plan” his nickname, the more you’ll be frustrated like a highschool freshman trying to have sex

Pass Interference penalties...

That’s my biggest gripe. The tiniest push can be a 35-40 yard penalty? Fuck that. I know the passing game is the big draw today, but I want to see some physicality. I know Desean’s and JMac’s stats would be hurt by this, but I don’t care.

About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.

IDK to much about Maclin's stats, the dude plays alot stronger than he appears.

something that no one is taking into account...

is that the level of athlete has changed. These guys on the field today are bigger, faster, and stronger than those of past. The schemes are much more complex, the coaching so much more advanced, the training miles away better.

With all of that comes the potential for so much more danger. Imagine, for one moment, being blindsided by a current NFL linebacker (lets say, Aaron Curry). 6’3, 255 lb. LB moving at 4.56 40 speed. Consider that IMPACT.

Now, consider a comparable impact of the standard, say, 1980s LB. 6’2, 240 lbs moving at 4.8 40 speed.

That is why the NFL wants less cheapshots. That is what the NFL wants to protect its moneymakers / franchise cornerstone QBs from.

Force = Mass X Acceleration.

this post doesn't make sense...

If the guy laying hits is bigger, stronger, faster…than the guy running iis bigger, stronger, faster. I agree 100% with this thread…at the current rate of change this game will be 2 hand touch in 10 years.

I heart Dawkins

f the guy laying hits is bigger, stronger, faster…than the guy running iis bigger, stronger, faster

making the impact even greater.

by eagleyosh on Mar 21, 2010 10:25 PM EDT up reply actions

yes but due to them both growing at an equal rate then the Impact truely should

equate back down to what it was back in the old days.

so the damage from an impact between two sedans traveling at 60 MPH is going to equal the damage from an impact between two large vans traveling at 75 MPH?

I don’t think so. It’s not a perfect metaphor, but the difference between hits in the olden days and now could be rather noticeable, especially considering the greater forces involved and the greater impulse in the collisions.

…yep, I take physics

I understand that but what I am saying is that its really not that big of a deal

some rules need to be put into place but there are others that dont need to be messed w/, this year we had a drop in concussions(overall) but had alot more knee injuries so why ruin it, now were going to say “no tackling to low” then were gonna get a ton of abdomin and chest injuries…

We just need to leave it be.

yeah.

injuries are gonna happen, no legislation can change that. Until humans evolve to having steel bones and ligaments of the strongest fibers, it can’t be changed.

by alcatraz0109 on Mar 21, 2010 11:44 PM EDT up reply actions

my point exactly...

infact dont they say that the majority of injuries happen when the player is being timid?? I think throwing a ton of rules at them is counter productive.

thats Cobb on Kolb crime if you ask me... as said by yophillybro

"I'm trading Kolb to Buffalo for Cribbs"- the brilliant Trade Kolb

by wild_eagle on Mar 22, 2010 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Not just that, but bigger/faster dudes don’t have stronger bones or ligaments. So injury is far more likely given the amount of momentum involved.

About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.

by IronHank on Mar 22, 2010 9:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Without these rule changes...

there would be deaths on the field. I love football. Can’t say I’d like watching anyone die from playing.

I agree

I’m fine with the rule changes. Hitting a QB after he releases the ball doesn’t affect the flight of the ball, or therefore impact the game. It only puts him at risk.

And when the CBs were allowed to make contact with the receivers all the way down the field as long as they kept the receiver in front of them, it made moving the ball unrealistically hard. It’s a tough balance between making rules that benefit the offense or the defense. Right now we’re playing an offensive game, years ago, it was defensive. It looks like we’re moving to a new era of a ‘safe’ game…which is fine, so long as they don’t start changing rules that affect a guy’s ability to perform.

I remember reading that high school football is the ball sport with the highest mortality rate

by T-rade on Mar 21, 2010 10:56 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah cuz we get kids who dont know what they're doing..

In 2008, some kid from our cross town rival(our schools are 10-15 min away on an average day) broke his neck and is paralyzed from the neck down… and its all because he didnt know how to tackle properly..

It seems that High School coaches now a days are more looking towards wins than the well being of their players and they dont really work on tackling… In my 4 years of playing football we got the “this isnt a weapon(speaking of the helmet)” talk and that was it, no tackling drills at all… fucking stupid… and we got yelled at cuz only 4-5 people could tackle properly

Luckily

we practice tackling at almost every practice during the offseason and I have yet to hear about a danish player going down with something that could’ve been lethal, closest to it is broken ribs

by T-rade on Mar 22, 2010 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions

we can only condition and weight lift during the offseason...

But what I’m saying is that there is more injuries due to poor coaching than anything.

Nice Post!

But as already stated, the number of injuries and studies not long after this, created the changes and more are on the way in the area of concussions in particular.
