Eagles scheduled workout with Michigan's Zoltan Mesko - Punter

Scouts.com Chris Steuber reported that the Eagles are one of 3 teams that have scheduled private workouts with Zoltan Mesko, who is considered one of the top punters in the 2010 draft.

Mesko will have the private workout with the Eagles on March 30.

The other teams that Mesko will have workouts with are the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Patriots.

Mesko's private workout with the Chiefs will be on March 26, and the Pats on either April 14th or 15th.

Zoltan Mesko Report:

Height: 6-4 Weight: 234 40- Time: 4.74

He will be able to start for a team as a rookie, and his projected as better than some NFL punters already. He is projected to be drafted in around the 3rd - 5th round. This year, Mesko has averaged a career high of 44.5 ypa.

Other punters on the Eagles roster: Durant Brooks, Sav Rocca

I hate draft picks on punters. Unless this guy has lechler-like talent and booms 50-yarders all the time, I’d rather use a pick on another player at a greater need position and take my chances with Sav.

punter is pretty important. if we’re absolutely sure on the guy as a future punter, we might as well take a 5th rounder on the guy. I know we can get a gem (like T. Cole) late in the draft, but by and large mid-late round picks won’t be major contributors. If we take a punter that can be productive for years to come rather than a flier that may or may not make it past training camp, why not?

Yes,

but if it turns out this guy is worse than Sav, it’s worse than if we picked up a backup at another position, because there’s not any need to keep an extra punter, and we could have gotten about the same quality from an UFA. Sav and Brooks are low risk because we snagged them for nothing; besides, is an additional 3 gross yards per punt worth a 5th rounder?

IMHO drafting kickers and punters should be reserved for the 7th round only, if at all.

With a name like Zoltan, you know he's gotta be cool

Just blasting 50 yarders isn’t always a good indicator that a guy is a good punter. Out kicking your coverage and poor kick placement when trying to pin one inside the 10 or 20 offsets the usefulness of a big leg.

All that said, I’d like to move on from Sav Rocca if a better punter can be found.

Sometimes it's just fun to take the family for a spin around the lake in the old boat. Even if it's not your family or your boat, and they're screaming for you to stop.
