Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

Facts about 2010 you wouldn't have predicted in 2007

  • Jim Johnson dies after a battle with cancer, but the story is overshadowed by FAVREFEST '09 (I had to mention this first. The rest is a much lighter read.)

  • Fresh out of prison, Michael Vick (AKA Ron Mexico) puts on a midnight green #7 jersey

  • Reggie Brown is a swashbuckling pirate

  • Shawn Andrews is a DJ

  • Brian Westbrook, Brian Dawkins, Shawn Andrews, Tra Thomas, Jon Runyan, Lito Sheppard, Jevon Kearse, Reggie Brown, Kevin Curtis, Darren Howard, and Correll Buckhalter are ALL gone.

  • The Eagles have an electric Pro-Bowl WR and a very promising, young WR and TE corps. (Reggie Brown, Kevin Curtis, and LJ Smith, anyone?)

  • The Eagles and the Cowboys are both ecstatic with their draft day trade (Anthony Spencer, Kevin Kolb, and Stewart Bradley)

  • Eli Manning is the highest paid QB in the league (if you don't count the nearly $20M Jake Delhomme is making this year)

  • Brett Favre is playing the best football of his career... for the Vikings

  • LaDainian Tomlinson is on the Jets

  • Thomas Jones is on the Chiefs

  • Larry Johnson is on the Redskins

  • Miles Austin is the best receiver on the Cowboys, Terrell Owens is gone, and Roy Williams is officially a punchline (so is the other one)

  • Tom Brady isn't perfect (18-1, out for 2008, first round exit in 2009)

  • Steve Smith is better than Steve Smith

  • Plaxico Burress is in jail

  • Winston Justice is a starter

  • Osi Umenyiora ISN'T

Have fun with this and add your own!

Eh, he’ll be 31 when this season starts and his play always seemed dependent on how well Jake Delhomme played.

he’ll be 31 when this season starts

Wide Receivers usually remain in their prime at least till age 34. See: Jerry Rice, Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, Derrick Mason etc.

his play always seemed dependent on how well Jake Delhomme played.

Isn’t that the case for every other wide receiver in the NFL? Do you think Andre Johnson or would be putting up the same numbers if his QB was Jamarcus Russell?

Carolina’s Steve Smith played most of the 2009-10 season with a QB that had a rating of 59. He still averaged 4 more yards per catch, more than double the yards after catch, and had half as many drops as the other Steve Smith.

Look at the top 20 NFL Receiving leaders from last season. Every single one of those receivers had a top 15 QB. The only two receivers to crack the top 25 that had QBs with less than an 80 rating are Calvin Johnson(61 QB rating) and Steve Smith(59 QB rating – 11 games).

Right now, saying one Smith is better than the other is not a fact but opinion.

Uh, having a top 15 QB isn’t exactly difficult. How do you define a top 15 QB anyway? By yards? I would think that a QBs yards and his WRs yards would directly correlate with each other.

    I am the people's troll :3™

by yomjoseki on Mar 21, 2010 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

By the way, if your criteria for being a top 15 QB is having a QB rating of 80 or more, you might want to change that, since 20 QB had a rating of 80 or more.

And Jake Delhomme hasn’t played too good this year has he?still was about 20 yards away from a 1000 yard season, and he still had 7 TD catches.

This all could've been avoided ...

… with a little semantic switch.

“Steve Smith is better than Steve Smith” changes to “Steve Smith puts up better numbers than Steve Smith.”

NYG had 107 catches for 1,220 yards and 7 TDs.
CAR had 65 catches for 982 yards and 7 TDs (in 15 games).

You can argue over who’s better, but we can all agree on whose production we’d rather have in our lineup.

If Umenyiora became available, do we bring him in for a look? The guy is a pretty good DE when healthy. I know we just got Tapp so this question isn’t as prevalent as it would have been one week ago, but what do you thing?

Also, Tuck was the one that could play OLB, right? Not Umenyiora?

    Yep

I was getting ready to pounce on Westy in fantasy too. I thought he would easily put up 1300+ yards rushing with Andy running the ball more often. How wrong that turned out to be. Thankfully I didn’t draft Westy but I still ended up getting McFadden as my RB2 which basically killed my team.

I had Westy as a 1st round keeper

Luckily I also had Chris Johnson, Phillip Rivers, and Desean Jackson as late round keepers so I still managed to win my league. Drafted Shady as a handcuff in the 8th, he started most of the season for me.

He’s retired, or at least didn’t play this year. Two years ago he was still the best when he was LT’s blocker, and he was still pretty damn good in Baltimore, but I’d believe right now the most recent All-Pro first-teamer is better than a guy who didn’t play last year, especially considering Weave is only 27, is a solid blocker, and already has a bigger role touching the ball in the offense than most if not all of his FB peers.

    - Norv Turner would still be the coach of the Chargers.
    - Mike Tomlin would win a SB in his 1st season as the Steelers’ coach & Cowher is still a lame analyst on TV
    - ‘Fast Willie’ Parker wouldn’t be so fast anymore and is having trouble finding even a backup job in the NFL this offseason
    - Brees would lead the Aints to a SB victory while Rivers has failed to get the Chargers over the hump in SD.
    - Mario Williams still doesn’t get as much recognition in the league as he should especially after a breakout ‘07 season.
    - TB would go from having such a fearsome defense to having one of the worst defenses in the league.
    - NE would go from being the “gold standard” with savvy personnel moves with great FA signings and solid drafts to being a team that brings in ’over-the-hill’ veterans who don’t have much left and flubbing the last couple of recent drafts.
    - Tuna would resurface in Miami and held the Dolphins to turn things around but not on the sidelines.
    - Al Davis is still alive.

    Eagles points:
    - Asante Samuel was in an Eagles’ uniform
    - David Akers was still going strong and was the Eagles’ kicker
    - Brown is still an Eagle and a very good CB while Sheppard is fighting to stay in the NFL
    - Good chance that McNabb and Reid are still together in 2010
    - Celek would evolve into the Eagles best option at TE since the heydey of Keith Jackson in the late 80s and has a chance to form a bond with a young Eagles QB (Kolb if he is the starter next year) just as Jackson did with Cunningham and Lewis did with McNabb.
    - Lurie would still be seen as a ‘guy from Boston’ and an outsider by almost everyone in town even though he has owned the Eagles for over 10+ years.

I wouldn't worry too much about that

Not only is it not healthy to obsess over lack of 6th and 7th rounders, but it’s also pretty much a known fact that the Eagles will wheel and deal to pick up extra picks at will … maybe even more so now that the third day of the draft leaves more time for wheeling and dealing (though perhaps less time for catching teams hurrying to make a move)

    No

McNabb will only leave if we can get a first. Seriously, Reid would rather keep him for the last year of his contract then let him go for less then a first.
McNabb really has the final say anyway. No team is going to trade for McNabb for a one year service so if he refuses to sign an extension with the team we would trade him to, basically the trade wouldn’t happen.

hakeem and manningham both over 50 cathes

boss had 40+ there were plenty of people catching footballs for eli. SS jus happened to have over a 100 of them. running game was lacking i agree. but the gents spread the ball more then carolina. delhomme couldnt handle the snap nevermind spread the ball around. carolina steve smith will def make the highlight reel more then SS12 but in the clutch, 3rd and 15.. give me Giants Steve Smith every time.
